RECRUITING - WHY BECOME A KNIGHT

From the moment of our founding in 1882, charity has been the first principle of the Knights of Columbus. We are Catholic men of faith and men of charitable action.

Thanks to the efforts of Father Michael J. McGivney, assistant pastor of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven and some of his parishioners, the Connecticut state legislature on March 29, 1882, officially chartered the Knights of Columbus as a fraternal benefit society. The Order is still true to its founding principles of charity, unity and fraternity.

The Knights was formed to render financial aid to members and their families. Mutual aid and assistance are offered to sick, disabled and needy members and their families. Social and intellectual fellowship is promoted among members and their families through educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and public relief works.

The history of the Order shows how the foresight of Father Michael J. McGivney, whose cause for sainthood is being investigated by the Vatican, brought about what has become the world's foremost Catholic fraternal benefit society. The Order has helped families obtain economic security and stability through its life insurance, annuity and long-term care programs, and has contributed time and energy worldwide to service in communities.

The Knights of Columbus has grown from several members in one council to 15,900 councils and 1.9 million members throughout the United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Poland, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Panama, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Cuba, Guatemala, Guam, Saipan, Lithuania, Ukraine, and South Korea.

Our charitable activities encompass an almost infinite variety of local, national and international projects. From international charitable partnerships with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mission and Habitat for Humanity to our own Food for Families and Coats for Kids projects and other local charities, the opportunity to work together with fellow Knights and their families is virtually endless. In 2017, the Knights of Columbus set a new all-time record for the 19th consecutive year. Our charitable donations increased from $177 million in 2016 to a new total of $185,652,989 in 2017. In addition, we achieved our highest level of charitable service in 2017, volunteering more than 75 million hours of service.

24 HOURS IS ALL IT TAKES

By becoming a Knight and giving just 24 hours a year, a man can be a better Catholic, father, and husband and make a difference in the Church and his community.

Some men don’t think they have time to join Knights. Ask them if they have just 24 hours. In just that short time frame, men can be a better Catholic, father and husband,

and part of a great Catholic brotherhood. Here’s how the hours break down:

8 HOURS a year working with your council on charitable projects for the local church or community.

4 HOURS a year enjoying a council function with their entire family.

4 HOURS a year attending council meetings to help plan future activities.

6 HOURS a year (half an hour a month) reading the Knights’ magazine Columbia, www.kofc.org, K of C social media and other publications.

1 HOUR a year meeting with a Knights of Columbus insurance agent for a free analysis of insurance needs and learning about the exclusive, top-rated programs available only to members and their families.

1 HOUR a year attending Mass together with your council.

That’s only 24 hours a year. It’s not a lot of time — but it is time well spent. It’s rewarding. It’s life changing.

Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, Grant that I may not so much seek To be consoled as to console; To be understood, as to understand; To be loved, as to love; For it is in giving that we receive, It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, And it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life. Amen.

Second Annual Saint Joseph’s Table Planning has begun for the 2nd Annual St. Joseph’s Table… Stay tuned!

This statue of St. Joseph will be used at the next "St. Joseph's Table" where parishioners from Our Lady of the Incarnation will ask for St. Joseph's intercession to help our families and our community. The statue was rescued from the Chapel of the Holy Innocents at Project Defending Life (PDL) after it was attacked by an arsonist on November 23rd, 2016. Our Lord was looking out for PDL and the Albuquerque Fire Department responded quickly with seven fire trucks to put out the fires that were set inside (otherwise the whole building would have been burnt to the ground and the Blessed Sacrament would have been lost). The arsonist used an accelerant to start the fires and one was lit directly under the statue of the Blessed Mother just a few feet from the altar. Everything inside the Chapel suffered severe smoke damage (including the statue of St. Joseph) but fortunately the Blessed Sacrament inside the Tabernacle was not harmed. This statue of St. Joseph was in the Chapel of the Holy Innocents at PDL on San Mateo Blvd for approximately 10 years before the fire. St. Joseph is a great inspiration to many who serve in the Pro-Life Ministry since he protected the Blessed Mother and the baby Jesus even when our Lord was still in the womb. Project Defending Life has a new Chapel of the Holy Innocents (blessed by Archbishop Wester) and runs a medical pregnancy resource center to help pregnant women in need. It is now located at 729 San Mateo Blvd in Albuquerque, just a few doors down from an abortion mill. Sidewalk counselors encourage and bring many women to PDL where they receive the help and care they need.

The statue of Mary is to the left in this picture and St. Joseph to the right. The Blessed Sacrament is in the Tabernacle in the center of this picture and was not harmed. Thank you Brother Curt Kuper

Marian Prayer Program

The 2018-2019 Marian Prayer Program presents the 18th Marian image sponsored by

the Knights of Columbus, this time of Our Lady Help of Persecuted Christians. Each

Knights of Columbus jurisdiction receives several Marian images, which serve as the

centerpieces for prayer services conducted in churches and council meeting places

throughout the Order for the duration of the initiative. Since its inception in 1979, the

Knights of Columbus’ Marian Prayer Program has held more than 166,900 local

council and parish prayer services with some 20 million participants. This year, the

prayer service is intended to raise awareness of the plight of Christians persecuted for

their faith and to stand in prayerful solidarity with them.

Council 15199 will host the ICON

October 5 – October 10, 2019.

SILVER ROSE

A Higher Purpose Share the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and promote respect for life by participating in this meaningful pilgrimage. The Silver Rose program demonstrates the unity between Knights of Columbus in Canada, the United States and Mexico, through a series of prayer services promoting the dignity of all human life and honoring Our Lady.

Overview Each year, from early March through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Did You Know? 5 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD PRAY THE ROSARY

10/3/2018

by Andrew Fowler

October has many traditions. There’s post-season baseball, tailgating at football games, apple picking and, of course, Halloween. But most importantly, there is the Rosary.

As decreed by Pope Leo XIII, October is the Month of the Rosary. For Knights of Columbus, this has a special significance. When a man joins our Order, he receives a Knights of Columbus rosary – at 1.9 million members, that’s a lot of rosaries. And praying the rosary is an activity that our members do communally as part of council life.

According to Catholic traditions, St. Dominic was given the rosary by the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1214 in the Monastery of Prouille.

Since then, it has become one of the Catholic Church’s powerful tools of prayer. But why pray the Rosary? Here are 5 of them. One for every decade.

1) The Blessed Mother gave us 15 Promises if we prayed the rosary

Alanus de Rupe, a 15th century Dominican preacher, claimed that he was visited by the Blessed Virgin Mary, who gave 15 promises to Christians who prayed the rosary, including the Blessed Mother’s special protection and greatest graces, the light of God, a powerful armor against Hell, as well as dominance over misfortune.

2) To obtain world peace

“Continue praying the rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, in order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war, because only She can help you.” This is what Our Lady of Fatima said to three children, Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto in June 1917.

The Blessed Mother visited the children in Fatima, Portugal from May 13, 1917 to October 13, 1917 a period that culminated in the Miracle of the Sun, otherwise known as, “The Day the Sun Danced.”

3) Time to reflect on the Gospel mysteries

The rosary consists of the Apostle’s Creed, the Hail Mary, the Our Father, the Glory Be, along with other prayers. However, in between each decade, we are invited to reflect on the Mysteries of the Gospel: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous.

In these mysteries, we rediscover, examine, and ponder the stories from the Gospel, and discover the real meaning of those events in the silence of our hearts.

4) Spiritual healing

And speaking of silence, another purpose of praying the rosary is to allow the repetition of the prayers enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ’s spirit dwells.

It is in that silence, we become more connected with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Not only that, but Jesus reveals to us that “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind.”

But to do so, we must make time for Him. The rosary is the perfect way to make time to connect with God, and for spiritual healing. Take 15 minutes a day to be one with Him.

5) Prayer works!

The power of prayer is unspeakable. The answer to every prayer is a miracle, in and of itself. It is our lifeline to Him, to our souls, and to each other.

But the reason why October is the Month of the Holy Rosary is due to the power of prayer.

In 1571, Pope St. Pius V organized a group of Christian forces, known as the Holy League, in defense of an imminent invasion by the Ottoman Empire. Before a battle with the Ottoman fleet in the Gulf of Patras, in the Ionian Sea, the pope called on all of Europe to pray the rosary for victory. These prayers was answered, with the Holy League defeating the much larger Ottoman forces on October 7 at the battle of Lepanto.

To commemorate the victory, Pius V established the feast day of “Our Lady of Victory” – also known as Our Lady of the Rosary.

Hundreds of years after the battle of Lepanto, Pope Francis is now calling all Catholics this month to pray the rosary daily to “protect the Church from the devil, who always seeks to separate us from God and from each other.”

So, in solidarity, let us pray to our most gracious advocate, the Blessed Mother, for peace throughout the world, and within our souls. It only takes 15 minutes.

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous

service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his

commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in

your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your venerable servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your

request). Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be to the Father

Knight’s Prayer

Our Lady, Queen of the Knights, bless all the activities of our Order. Keep us true to our pledge, to extend the kingship of thy

divine son on earth. Through Thine intercession, win for us the grace, ever to exemplify in our public and private lives, the virtues that should characterize

those especially dedicated to the service of the heavenly court. Make us always aware that as your Knights, we are constantly

observed, our faith judged, and our Order appreciated. Accept, O Mary, this renewed pledge of fealty and devotion, of Thy

Servants, the Knights of Columbus.
