Faith & Mission

The retreat day was very good. I enjoyed every minute of it. I liked how the teachers chose the groups, I liked the group I was in, because they were girls that aren’t in my homeroom and I got to know them better. I liked all the activities equally and I don’t have a favourite. I learnt many things during retreat day including the school song.

Year 7 Retreat day was a great success. We all learnt a lot about the history of our school as well as the charism of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. Understanding our heritage and where the rest of our OLSH family are in the world helps us to better understand our school and our place within it. The highlight of my day was hearing Sister Annabella’s inspiring life story. I enjoyed every session of the day but the one I enjoyed most where we did lots of activities about the history of our school, and on Jules Chevalier. Some older students came in and together with some of the teachers they taught us the OLSH school song. Another positive in the day was the chance to spend more time with girls from the other classes. Overall it was a perfect day for relaxing, learning more about our own College and the wonderful OLSH sisters and enjoying time with our peers.

I loved the Year 7 Retreat day. I learnt about the OLSH spirit, and how we all have experienced it. We talked about Jules Chevalier and Marie Hartzer, and what makes us an OLSH girl. We did fun activities and made heaps of new friends. I especially loved playing the games and it was a great day to relax and take a break from school but still being with your friends. I think it was just what we needed to help us finish this wonderful year of Year 7.

Retreat day was a great opportunity to relax and wind down and to think about our achievements so far this year. It was also good to mix with other girls in our year level. It was also interesting to learn about the history of the school and Sr. Anabella’s background. Overall, the retreat day was a fun day to socialise with friends, relax and to meet other students.

The Unit 2 Legal Studies class was very fortunate to be able to meet with Ms Elizabeth Miller and the Honourable Robert Clark earlier this week.

Ms Miller and Mr Clark spoke about their experiences as students described their pathway into politics. Mr Clark was especially interesting as he was able to describe role the Attorney General plays in the Australian legal system.

The students were very engaged in discussion with the Members of Parliament. They asked some great questions and were delighted to have been offered this opportunity.

A reminder to all Year 8 parents that the Parent Information Evening for Issoudun III Residential Program Hartzer Campus will take place on Monday November 10 at 7.30pm in the Theatrette. It is an expectation that all students are in attendance with at least one parent on this night.

Building resilience in our young people is the aim of all parents. At times, however, our actions can disempower our children rather than empower them. Michael Grose, Australia’s leading parenting educator, has put together tips for parents on ways to build resilience in children. Please see page 10 for tips with ‘resiliency robbers’.

“All parents have the best intentions when raising kids. Wanting what is best for kids can cause parents to make decisions that are not always in their (children’s) long term best interests”

Year 10 HPE students have been taking part in a PE unit learning all about ‘Target Games’. The aim of ‘Target Games’ is to place a ball or other projectile in or on a target to achieve the best possible score. Target Games encourage and develop a high degree of precision in the physical skills used. The fundamental movement skills employed are hand-eye coordination and concentration on a specific target. Most sports have a ‘target’ element to them and this Year 10 unit allows students/players to practise techniques and skills in a fun environment. This week 10 Blue went to the Moorabbin Ten Pin bowling lanes during one of their practical classes. The girls had a great time and are pictured right.

Congratulations to Ms Gina Coetzee and the Semester 2 Year 7, 8 and VCE/VET Dance students who presented a brilliant Dance Show on Thursday October 23 in the College Hall. The girls presented dances that they had learnt during their Dance lessons this semester and performed with style and confidence to a very appreciative audience.

The girls are to be commended for their professional behaviour as they prepared for the night. Their commitment, energy and enthusiasm were evident in the realisation of most engaging performances. Well done, girls; we are very proud of you.

At OLSH we are very excited about the 2015 joint production with De La Salle College Malvern.

Auditions and casting have been completed and we congratulate OLSH girls who have been selected for the Grease chorus. Special congratulations to the following girls who have been selected for principle roles: Gillian Lantouris, Alishia Francis, Lara White, Sarah Jones, Aviva White, Laura Halliday, Lauren Quintal and Laura Webb.

We look forward to a wonderful production in May next year.

Lessons are currently available in piano, guitar, drums, violin, viola, clarinet and flute. Students are also able to undertake singing tuition, to learn and develop vocal skills. Tuition is available on either an individual or group basis (groups of two only). Please note that piano is on an individual basis only.

The college encourages girls to be involved in music, not only as a creative outlet, but also to enhance their academic and social development, as well as improve their confidence. Students undertaking instrumental/vocal tuition are also encouraged to participate in College ensembles and choirs, with a variety of performance opportunities.

At the end of each Semester all students receive a written report detailing their progress, both technically and musically.

With seven vibrant and talented women on the organising committee, led by the energetic Danni (Terzini) Molino, former College Captain, how could the 30th reunion of the Class of 1984 not be a success? On Sunday October 12 2014, women travelled from as far afield as Bali and Swan Hill and apologies came from many others. Everyone was delighted that five teachers were able to attend. They were Steve Walpole, Joy Carver, Monica Iles and Pina Milne. Howard Liston, who started at OLSH in 1977 and is still a current teacher, also came along and led a College tour.

Girls from the Class of 2013 were happy to see twelve of their former teachers at their first reunion held at the College on Wednesday October 8. Even though only a few years had passed since they started at OLSH in 2008, there was excitement and laughter when they looked at photos of themselves as fresh young 12-year-olds in Year 7. “How much we have grown up”, no doubt many were thinking. The teachers were pleased to hear that the girls were all doing well in their chosen courses and wished those about to take their end of semester exams and assessments all the best. At the end of the reunion, the girls were each given the gift of an eco-pen inscribed with the College’s name and were encouraged them to go out and make their mark on the world in the spirit of the College mantra: “We believe! We achieve!”
