From the Principal…

K-6 Athletics Carnival What a great day! Every child who attended participated in a range of athletics events and supported their various House groups with enthusiasm and positivity. There were many family members who came to join us to watch the events and also to help as volunteers. Thank you greatly to everyone who was able to lend a hand – it really is a day that showcases our school community’s team spirit. It was a day of particular sporting success for many of our primary students, with a large number setting new records. Congratulations to these students listed below:

• Archie – 8 year old boys 100m • Kasiah – 8 year old girls 100m • Curtis – 9 year old boys 100m • Eleonora – 9 year old girls 100m • Harley – 10 year boys 100m

• Ellie – 10 year old girls 100m; junior girls discus

• Lauren. M – 11 year old girls 100m • Ruby. V – 12 year old girls 100m • Raff – junior boys 800m • Levi – 11 year old boys 800m

We will have 35 students representing our school at the Blue Mountains PSSA Zone Athletics Carnival next Friday 6th September. We wish them luck and know they will do their best. There are a number of photos here in the newsletter from Mr Bartie and Mrs Hua. There are also some on our school website. Please enjoy!

Staffing Changes From today, Ms McMahon is on leave until the end of the term. Her class will be taught by Mrs Eves. Mr Atkinson will be taking leave from Thursday next week, returning at the beginning of Term 4. His class will be taught by Mr Robert Pearce. In this time, the relieving Assistant Principal leading Stage 3 will be Miss Crowe.

Canteen The NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy is a key initiative to support the Premier’s Priority to tackle childhood obesity. As part of this strategy our school canteen has developed and submitted a menu for evaluation. I am pleased to report that our school was awarded the ‘Healthy School Canteen’ status!!! This means our canteen is actively working to support LPS students to develop healthy eating habits that will have a long-term positive impact. Congratulations to our canteen volunteers, particularly Vikki and Winnie, for your ongoing efforts and achievement of this special goal. Well done!!!

“Have the courage to make the change, the strength to see you through it

and the faith that everything will turn out for the best.” (Anurag Prakash Ray)

Last Friday 23rd August I accompanied class KJellyfish on a walking excursion to Woolworths Leura. Our kindergarten students were wonderful ambassadors for Leura Public School as they enjoyed a tour of the store, even visiting special areas like the delivery dock and the super chilly cold storage room. We learnt about different sorts of fruit and vegetables and enjoyed snacking on some yummy samples offered to us. Thank you KJellyfish and Mrs Jinks for inviting me to join you on the excursion.

Mrs Vidler

On Wednesday 14th August all of Kindergarten went on a nature walk in Leura. We were taking note of all of the living things that we could see and looking at places along the way. Mrs Jinks and Mrs Field

On Wednesday, 14thAugust, students represented Leura Public School at the Upper Blue Mountains Basketball Gala Day. Our junior teams were made up of students from stage 2 and our seniors were a mixture of stage 3 students along with some stage 2 boys that courageously played up a division. All teams played very well against amazing talent from the other schools. Our senior boys team, made up of mostly stage 2 boys, did a fantastic job all day and are to be commended on their fabulous sportsmanship. The junior boys had everyone on the edge of their seats for most of their games, displaying some fantastic skills and making it into the semis. The senior girls knocked out every opponent until they were met by Blackheath PS in the grand final. Our junior girls were made up of absolute super stars and brought home the glory of winning the grand final! Congratulations to everyone who played in the gala day. Special thanks to our supporters and super coaches on the day – Mr Macarthur, Mr Burey and Miss Dege.

Miss Crowe

Last week, Year 2 and Year 3 Students from the Junior Choir performed at the Narragunnawali Festival at Katoomba High School. The night-time performance was a totally full house, and our students sang beautifully. It was a fabulous performance including small groups items, soloists and a mass choir from schools across the mountains. Congratulations to all those students who attended and many thanks to the parents and carers who supported their children to be part of this wonderful performance opportunity. Mr Connor

The SASS staff at Leura Public School would like to thank Mrs Berwick, teachers and the school community for the morning tea, gifts and well wishes we have received for SASS Recognition Week. We have been very spoilt and feel so lucky to be a part of this lovely school.

P&C Meeting 6:30PM – 8:00PM

5/6Albatross Classroom

We all have a ready excuse (or two or three!) for not volunteering. But what if we busted some of those excuses and proved to you that no matter what excuse you give, there will always be an opportunity for you to volunteer.

EXCUSE #5 – I DON’T KNOW ANYONE. What better way to meet other parents than helping out with P&C activities? We have helpers and volunteers from across all Stages, so there is every chance of meeting a parent of a student in your child’s class. We are a super friendly bunch, and there have been good friendships formed through P&C. Come along to the next event and you could meet your next best friend!!

Stay tuned for another busted excuse in our next issue!

K-2: 5 – 6PM

Y3-6: 6.30 – 7.30PM

$6 per child or $10 family. Tickets can be purchased at the door. A sausage sizzle & cake

stall are both ready to feed you! Gorgeous handmade Woodland dress-up accessories will

be available for purchase ($2-$10).

This week at Garden Club: We have had a load of beautiful rich soil delivered, so we are in the process of topping up our beds ready for spring plantings. The children are keen to get some potatoes in, as well as plant the sweetcorn seed that we saved from our bumper crop last year. At the moment we are harvesting rhubarb, parsley, silverbeet and spring onions. Some of the produce gets cooked up for us to share at garden club. Some of it goes home in lunch boxes, and sometimes the canteen gets it first. Some things get eaten straight away! Our peas and garlics are looking strong, and the onions seedlings are settling in, and we even have some lemons on the tree! We meet every Thursday during recess or lunch. We’d love to see more parents and carers involved. Get in touch with Rebecca Hutchinson or Sarah Delaney via the school to come along.

A BIG Thank You to the volunteers who helped out with the secret Father’s Day activity: Caroline, Feyruse, Jan, Kylie, Mel, Tori, Connor & Brendan, Jenny, Tina-Marie, Vikki & Winnie. Thank you to Bunnings for their very generous donation!

Leura PS Canteen has partnered with Fresh for Kids (an initiative of Sydney Markets) and are proud to announce that we are participating in the ‘Eat Fresh & Win’ Canteen Campaign. This campaign aims to promote fruits and vegetables and offers all students the opportunity to win great prizes. The campaign starts Friday, 23 August 2019 and ends Friday, 20 September 2019. To enter, simply order or purchase (over-the-counter) a fruit or vegetable item from the Canteen. This includes anything made with fruits or vegetables, for example, most of our Limited Hot Food Meals will have vegetables added. Even items which you think have no vegetables, like our meat sausage rolls , are actually packed with veggies! Students will be awarded one sticker for each eligible item ordered or purchased. We will be putting up canteen menus on the campaign posters with the eligible items highlighted in GREEN. Upon collecting 2 stickers, students return their completed entry form to the canteen and the student is rewarded with an instant prize of a scented Stamper Pen (there are seven different designs for students to collect) and a card with a unique code to enter the bonus prize draw. At the end of the campaign, we will send back all completed competition forms and they will go into the Major Prize draws.

PRIZES: First: $1000 Booktopia Voucher Second: Strike Bowling Party Voucher Third: 10 x Bright Kids Stationery Packs Fourth: 20 Tupperware Lunch Packs Bonus Prize: Nintendo Switch (thanks to Harvey Norman Auburn Flagship Store)

If you, or your child/ren have any questions or issues regarding

the campaign, please do not hesitate to talk with Vikki or Winnie, or email us at [email protected].
