Youth Interfaith Workshop 3/16/07

Fatima’s Corner Today’s Topic: Importance of Interfaith

Programs At the ICR, we have many interfaith programs. Why do we have so many of them? Because these programs are vital to the acceptance of our society and Muslims all over the United States. These days, the media and the actions of some Muslims aren’t necessarily leaving a great impression on the people. The only way that we can correct this impression is by teaching others about what Islam really is. How can we do this? By having interfaith programs. I myself have been to many of these interfaith programs and helped out when people from other religious communities visit our masjid. Almost every time, at least one person asked about our views on the terrorist attacks of September 11. This gives us an opportunity to show them that Islam is really a peaceful religion, and not the violent religion that the media portrays it to be. From interfaith programs, not only do others get to learn about Islam, we also get to learn about other religions and their beliefs. Recently, we had a youth workshop with Noa Baum, a storyteller from Israel. There were many Muslims, Jews, and Christians there from different communities. We were able to teach them about our religion, while becoming aware of other religions. Interfaith allows us to bridge differences between religions and resolve conflicts between us. Interfaith programs allow us to do da’wah and spread the word of Islam. From these programs, we can leave a positive impression of Islam on others. Interfaith helps create feelings of compassion and understanding between faiths to hopefully

East Bank

The sun rises from east The sky is clear Everyone is quiet in the city A rumble from the distance breaks the quiet Like a ripple spreading through calm water A shot is fired followed with a big boom The man watches the city arouse from a balcony Young men pile out of their homes Yelling and shouting A Large tank rolls into view Everyone throwing rocks at the tank The tank keeps rolling unaffected by rocks Occasionally shooting Similar to story of David and Goliath A little boy fighting a giant with rocks No one makes effort for peace The fighting continues for years Many people dying every month We need peace Some large explosions in distance as the fighting continue The day roles by slowly the sound continues The sun sets in the west The sky gets dark The city becomes quiet The rumbling disappears All is quiet in East Bank ~ Ishraq Kabir

HADITH OF THE MONTH

"Seven kinds of people will be sheltered under the shade of God on the Day of Judgment...They are: a just ruler, a young man who passed his youth in the worship and service of God...one whose heart is attached to the mosque...two people who love each other for the sake of God...a man who is invited to sin...but declines, saying 'I fear God'...one who spends his charity in secret, without making a show...and one who remembers God in solitude so that his eyes overflow." Riyadh-us-Salaheen, Hadith 376.

Here is the story of an Imam who got up after Friday prayers and announced to the people: "I have good news and bad news. The good news is, we have enough money to pay for our new building program. The bad news is, it's still out there in your pockets." ~http://muslimahya-ya.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_muslimahya-ya_archive.html

Jinn Facts: By Husain BawanyJinn Facts: By Husain BawanyJinn Facts: By Husain BawanyJinn Facts: By Husain Bawany A follow-up on our Jinn lecture

• Jinn are made of fire

• Just as there are good/bad humans, there are good/bad Jinn

• It is believed that some Jinn try to sneak up to the heavens to hear what Allah is planning. They are then shot down (shooting stars??). In the Quran it says, “'And [so it happened] that we reached out towards heaven: but we found it filled with mighty guards and flames, notwithstanding that we were established in positions [which we had thought well-suited] to listening to [whatever secrets might be in] it: and anyone who now [or ever] tries to listen will [likewise] find a flame lying in wait for him!”(Surah Jinn #72 verses 8 and 9).

• There have been many events where people were controlled by Jinn and needed exorcisms.

• There have also been times when Jinn were controlled by humans, such as the time of Prophet Suleyman.

• Jinn can take many forms, usually cats or snakes.

• Iblis (Satan) is the most powerful Jinn.

• Jinn live life like humans, they experience death and on the day of judgment, they too will be held accountable for their deeds.

Life Is…

Life is like a bird flying, sly, out of your grasp And when you get caught, it’s hard to come out. Life is like a bird flying, to fly you must learn To learn you must work, stay on the straight path Beating your wings until, you soar high into the sky. Like a tornado spinning round and round Throwing you right and left, never straight Life is like a bird flying up and down And if you get caught in the wind You may not come back out Sly, out of you grasp always out of your reach, That is life
