Meet our Candidates for Board of DirectorsJohn Campbell, former Board President

We have 4 candidates responding to the call for new board members. Thanks go to:

Lisa FeheleyI moved back to Denver last Summer and immediately

re-joined the DBTC. My rides with the club on the bike paths around town have been energizing and I have loved meeting other members. Joining up for lunch after a ride with fellow cyclists makes for a perfect day !

I am interested in being a board member to give back to the club that has been a blessing to me. I’m inspired by the upcoming 50 year Anniversary of our club and I hope to help the board and the club in any way I can.

Ellen FitzpatrickI have been a DBTC member since 2006. I went on my first out

of town trip to the Texas Hill Country that year and have been on several other trips to date. I’ve especially enjoyed meeting wonderful DBTC members and having the many friendships I’ve kept over the years. I have volunteered at some of the picnics and volunteer recognition dinners, and as rear leader on several rides and even co-led an out of town trip.

I would like to step up and serve as a Board member to help retain the Club’s outstanding leadership in the bicycling community and to lend my skills and time as needed to an organization I enjoy.

Cyndy KlepingerI recently joined DBTC as a way to meet people as well as

improve my cycling skills. I enjoy cycling and enjoy it even more in the company of fellow riders. One of the best things about DBTC is the fun rides and tours that are offered. I would to like to use my 30-plus years of non-profit marketing to help the club promote itself and to increase its membership and programming.

Brad WestMy family moved to Denver in 1995 from Hays, Kansas, and I

took up cycling to stay fit for ski season. Now it’s my only sport; I go for endurance—40 to 60 mi. in an outing.

I rode with DBTC for three years when I began cycling. Since then I have ridden with many of the Denver clubs. I ride the MS 150 and the Copper Triangle every year. In 2011 I took a week off in August to follow the Pro Cycling Challenge. I did the same in 2012 and 2013 and am making plans for 2014.

It will be fun meeting everyone again for the first time.

6th Annual Fraser Fun Weekend Friday 1/24/14 - Monday 1/27/14Leader: Ellen Chilikas

Downhillers can ski Winter park or Sol Vista, XC skiers and snowshoers can explore the Nordic centers, the Fraser Experimental Forest and even wander up around Granby. And, the brave can go careening down the Fraser Tubing Hill again!

We’ll have continental breakfast daily, plus evening BYO happy hours. Our hotel has a hot tub and indoor pool. We can walk to restaurants and stores.

Double occupancy - expect costs to be $225 per person for 3 nights. $100 deposit due now to hold your spot, final payment is due December 1st. Contact Ellen ([email protected]) ASAP if interested.

Please send your deposit check (made out to Ellen Chilikas, post dated to 11/1/13) with the DBTC tour forms (www.dbtc.org/Default.aspx?pageId=1568909) to Ellen at PO Box 471803, Aurora, CO 80047. You must send both a check and your forms to hold a spot. Space is first come, first served. Funds are transferable but not refundable.

Ski Week in Taos, NM Feb. 1-9, 2014

Taos Ski Valley is a small but interesting (and challenging) ski hill known for its Ski Weeks. The ski school is famous for its week long clinics: for about $120 you get 6 days of 2-hour lessons with the

same instructor who works with you, video-tapes you, and critiques your skiing to improve your on-mountain skills. This is a great opportunity for double black diamond cliff jumpers (yes there are cliffs to jump) or never-ever green run skiers who want to try a new sport. There is something for everybody who wants to learn how to be better on the snow. And, as those of you who have been in Taos for bicycle rides know, it is a very beautiful part of the world. Art galleries and restaurants abound in town; or take a balloon ride over the Rio Grande gorge… you don’t have to be a skier to join in the fun. Everything’s possible!

This is an unofficial excursion: you are responsible for your own lift tickets (separate from ski school clinic) and other incidentals. If a few people are interested in skiing Taos without the crowds and lift lines of the front range, I’d love to put together a trip, if only to have carpooling companions. If 6 or fewer people are interested, it’s probably the motel near the plaza. If 8-10 people are interested, we could probably rent a house and do some in-home cooking as well as enjoy the local eateries. If a dozen or more really want to go, we could probably get slope-side condos. I’m going, and would like company.

This is a non-profit trip. I’m paying my own way and will go regardless of traveling companions. If interested contact me: Sandra Newton: 303-747-3751

Blossoms of Light at DBGSandra Newton

Denver Botanic Garden Blossoms of Light - Tuesday, Dec. 10. Meet Sandra Newton at 5pm for pretty good snacks and drinks at Udi’s Pizza Cafe Bar before hiking at 6pm to the York Street Botanic Garden’s Blossoms of Light celebration. Driving is an option, of course. The lights are spectacular, as are the ice sculptures, and for a dollar you can purchase 3D glasses to have a different perspective on the illuminations. It’s always more fun to do this in a group, so come along for a lovely night with lots and lots (did they say millions?) of lights. Details: Udi’s is at 2550 E. Colfax; tickets at the Gardens are $10 or I can get them early for $8. Let me know if you want to go. And If you want me to buy discounted tickets, please get me your payment by Dec 2. You can reach me at 303-747-3751 or email at [email protected]. Snow does not cancel.

DBTC Meetup group, www.meetup.com/Denver-Bicycle-Touring-Club/ can be used to post rides as well. Once you have posted your ride, we will review the

information to be sure it complies with the club requirements then upload it to the MeetUp web site where you can edit your ride info. MeetUp is open to the public and can increase the number of riders on your rides and, hopefully, club members. Rides cannot conflict with the ride schedule. If you have registered with MeetUp, we will post your scheduled rides. We are also on Facebook if you want to share pictures or bike-related news.

You can join all four groups. After you send the e-mail requesting to join, you will be contacted via e-mail with a confirmation. If you’d like to post an event, simply go into the site. Remember that only club-related activities can be posted. We reserve the right to cancel any posting we don’t think is appropriate.

Please Note;• Joining either of these Yahoo Groups, Facebook or the MeetUp Group

does not make you a valid member of the DBTC. • If your e-mail address changes, you must send your new e-mail

address to both the Yahoo Group and to the DBTC webmaster ([email protected])

• The DBTC Website operates independently from the Yahoo Groups. The Yahoo Groups send only e-mail messages concerning some upcoming events. The DBTC monthly Newsletter, The Colorado Bicyclist, is sent to you from the DBTC Website via e-mail only if you have so requested.

DBTC FALL-WINTER FUN RIDES 2013Fall is officially here. Our ride coordinators are taking a much-deserved break. Late fall and winter riding conditions make it difficult to pre-plan rides. If it is cold and blowing, the ride leader may not want to roll out to lead a promised ride - especially since he or she might be the only person to brave the elements. Therefore, our scheduled rides become Show-N-Go with a few holiday or special events.

WINTER SHOW-N-GO AND HOLIDAY RIDES

FUN/INT-2/3-20/30-NESW-11:00 AM Unless there is a leader named, WINTER rides will be Show-N-Go. The riders who show up on these days will decide among themselves the route, the mileage, the pace and the after-ride restaurant. The starting locations will be places where many rides have begun in the past and thus several riders will have an idea of possible routes to be taken. You can go to www.dbtc.org and hit the start locations button for more detailed directions to most of the starting points or possibly maps of rides from that location.

Winter Riding Guidelines Weather: Forecast temperature above freezing with dry conditions.Clothing: Wear layers, outer windbreaker, hat/ear covers, gloves, toe covers & riding/sports pants covering the kneesOther: Bring water, repair items and a snack

Dale Trone

The purpose of the schedule is to allow us to provide a variety of rides throughout the metro area. Depending on last-minute rides does not meet that goal; however, there are times when no ride is scheduled within a reasonable driving distance so you might want to add an alternative. The guidelines for posting last minute rides are:1. The leader must be a member 2. There can’t be a similar ride on the published schedule a. Geography – a ride in Parker is NOT similar to

one in Golden b. AND start time – a 9 AM ride is NOT similar to

a 3 PM ride c. AND speed type – ROAD and FUN rides are NOT similar

d. AND distance – a 35 mile ride is NOT similar to a 20 mile ride

3. When a last-minute ride appears to fall into the gray area such as 20 vs 25 miles, FUN rides starting an hour apart with start locations both in Aurora, then contact the scheduled ride leader to see if s/he feels the ride would compete. It might be better to simply join the other ride.

4. While yahoo groups are still a media for last-minute rides, MeetUp has additional features and more and more of our last minutes are published there.

5. Yahoo and MeetUp can be used when last-minute changes are necessary. This allows a little more flexibility if you schedule a ride and then have to make a change later.
