The Vicar writes
For John and me, our first Christmas in Ellesmere was very special. It was an absolute privilege to lead Christmas Services at Southbridge, Irwell, and Leeston, all of which were well attended. I would like to thank all of you who prepared our churches, assisted with the services, and came to celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. I would especially like to thank Betty Chamberlain and members of the choir for their dedication and enthusiasm. They brought something wonderful to the service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Irwell and the Midnight Eucharist at St James. I am also grateful for the generous donations of gifts and foodstuffs that were given by the AAW, and the Southbridge and Leeston congregations. These were forwarded to the City Mission and we have received letters of appreciation. Another delight over summer was sharing services with the Co-operating Parish. We will have another opportunity to worship with and enjoy the company of our Co-operating parish friends on the 22nd of February when we come together for a shared service and picnic at Killinchy. The pool will be open at a cost of $1 for a child or $2 for a family. This month sees the beginning of Lent, a season of preparation for Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday when we are marked on our foreheads with the sign of the cross in ash, reminding us of our humanity and our mortality, and our need to turn back to Christ. While Lent is often associated with giving something up, the point is to find space in which to reflect on what it means to be followers of Christ Jesus, and to enjoy spiritual refreshment and nourishment. One way of doing that is to join a short term study group. This year we are offering two opportunities to meet with others to read, reflect and pray using passages from St John’s Gospel. There are 8 studies in all and the material has been prepared by Peter Carrell and the late Dean, Lynda Patterson. Both groups will meet at St John’s, one after the Wednesday morning Eucharist and one in the Evening. Please speak to the Vicar if you are interested. And with Lent just around the corner, it’s time to bring back any palm crosses you may have so that they can be made into ashes. Bring them to a service or drop them into the vicarage. May God bless you and keep you, and all those you love and pray for.

Introducing Our New
PARISH ADMINISTRATOR
The Vicar and Wardens are delighted to announce the
appointment of Jade Arnold as our Parish Administrator. This
position will combine elements of the roles of Parish Secretary
and Treasurer. Jade lives in Southbridge and is a mother, keen
gardener, and enthusiastic about caring for the environment
and finding ways to bring people in the community together.
Jade has had extensive experience working in
scientific laboratories and with community groups. Jade’s
main task will be acting as Vestry Secretary, assisting our
Parish Treasurer with the preparation of reports, setting up and
maintaining a parish website and helping the Vicar with the
preparation of the Compass and other material.

Around the Parish
St Luke’s, Brookside
Over the past few months the Grounds Committee has
been very active installing a zip in the Sunday School
room, and water blasting it in reparation for painting. We
are grateful to those who carried out the work, and to the
Co-operating Parish for financial support for these
projects.
St Mary’s, Irwell
Thanks to the magnificent generosity of parishioners
from the Irwell Community, work to restore the exterior
fabric of St Mary’s has been carried out. Rotten weather-
boards from around the church and under the eaves have
been replaced.
The Christmas Day Service at St Mary’s was very well
attended by a congregation of all ages, and the singing
just about lifted the roof off.
St John’s, Leeston
St John’s enjoyed hosting a combined service for
members of the Anglican and Co-operating Parishes to
celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. It was great to see
the church full. Those in attendance enjoyed a lovely
time of fellowship over morning tea.
And some good news from Jan Fraser.
Last year Jan and Lynda Webb began a Mission Sales
table, using a tea trolley from the Parish
Office. Each week people bring along small items for
others to purchase, with all the money raised
going to help the parish pay its Mission quota. Jan has
reported that she has been able to bank $50 from the sales
table. Well done everyone!
Taumutu
On the 11th of January, the day on which Bishop Selwyn
first preached at Taumutu, Anglicans and members of the
Co-operating parish gathered for a wonderful service, led
by Paul Eden, at Hone Wetere Church. During the
service Rosaline Brown explained how the stories of
Samuel Marsden and Ruatara, Tarore and Tamihana Te
Rauparaha, and Bishop Selwyn are interwoven in the
history of Taumutu, and the significant role Maori played
in the spread of Christianity in this land.
As we recalled the coming of the gospel, Paul challenged
us to think about who might need to hear the good news
today. Garth Cant and Marjorie Smart from the Diocesan
Bi- cultural Committee led the prayers. After the service
we enjoyed a morning tea at Ngati Moki Marae.
This occasion was a most appropriate and joyous way for
us to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the preach-
ing of the gospel in our country.

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME
St James’, Southbridge 18 January 2015
On a very warm afternoon, the bells rang out at
Southbridge as the parish celebrated the 150th
anniversary of the opening of the first church of St
James, and the beginning of the Anglican Parish of
Ellesmere on the 20th of January 1865. The Vicar led a
traditional service of Evening Prayer adapted from the
Book of Common Prayer. Many parishioners remarked
how the old words ‘just came back to them.”
In a rich and detailed talk, Kathryn Millar and Marian
Dixon told the story of St James’, and related it to the
development of Southbridge and of the Parish of
Ellesmere. A variety of documents and artefacts
pertaining to the early days of the church were
displayed in the Hall.
At the conclusion of the service we shared a delicious
barbecue meal, and a time to chat outside in the lovely
grounds. Many thanks to Kathryn and the team at
Southbridge who organised and facilitated this very
special occasion—and to the blokes who did the
dishes! What a fabulous team!
Daytime AAW
At the final meeting for the year, the Daytime AAW enjoyed a lovely Christmas Communion Service led by the Vicar at St James’, Southbridge. All then sat down
to a wonderful catered Christmas meal. Thank you very much to Rosaline Brown for her dedicated leadership and superb organisation.

Money for Mission a challenge from St James’ , Southbridge
Judith Mc Drury has suggested we place a con-
tainer in the back of the church (a largish one)
and collect old denomination coins for Mission. It
is possible to cash in on these, but not at the local
bank. Judith has obtained the necessary form, and
in due course if the response is good we will make
arrangements to get the coins to the required
destination. We challenge other parish churches
to join us in this.
And from St John’s , Leeston A sales trolley has been set up with the proceeds
going to offset our mission giving. Purchases can
be made during morning tea on Sundays.
Donations of small items such as jam, preserves,
produce, books, jigsaws, crafts are most
welcome.
