ON LAW FEBRUARY 2004

The Marty Lyons Foundation was established 22 yearsago by New York Jets All-Pro Marty Lyons to fulfillthe special wishes of children, between the ages of

three and seventeen who have been diagnosed as having aterminal or life threatening illness.

A professional football player in the National Football League,Marty played for twelve years as a defensive lineman. Earlyin his career, Marty became a surrogate father to a three-year-old boy who was suffering from an advanced illness. Threeyears later, in 1982, the youngster’s death coincided with thesudden death of Marty’s father and the birth of his first child,a healthy son. These experiences profoundly affected Marty’sattitude toward life, fame and his fellow human beings. Withthe encouragement and assistance of his family and friends,Marty became determined to establish a foundation dedicatedto granting the wishes of seriously ill children.

The Marty Lyons Foundation has kept hope alive in the heartsof children with a terminal or life threatening illness by making

their special wish come true. A fulfilled special wish has theability to sweep the children and their family away from thedaily heartache of illness. It is a joyous time that creates awonderful memory and a better quality of life. Every child hasa dream and, although the foundation can’t promise a lifetimeof happiness to these seriously ill children, they can make onedream a reality. They have granted wishes for a special trip toDisney, a computer system, a swimming pool, special renova-tions to allow a child to live at home, a swim with the dolphins,a Cinderella-like “Sweet 16” birthday party and many more.

Cummings, McClorey, Davis & Acho Attorney Jana Bergerserves as President of the Michigan chapter. Many other at-torneys and support staff at CMDA serve on the board or asvolunteers. We are always looking for additional volunteers. If you would like to volunteer or would like additional infor-mation on the organization, please contact Theresa Boyer at(734) 261-2400 or via e-mail at [email protected]..

ABOUT THE MARTY LYONS FOUNDATION

In June 2003, our firm was proud to be named the Michi- gan Chapter of the New York-based Marty Lyons Foundation.Since that time, we have been busygetting the non-profit organizationup and running in Michigan, cre-ating a board and planning our firstfundraiser.

This Spring, the Marty LyonsFoundation is hosting a children’s

silent art auction. Children who have been diagnosed with aterminal or life threatening illness, and who are current or pre-vious patients at St. John Hospital, are the “stars” of theevening.

Over the next few months, the children will be visiting You’reFired in West Bloomfield to create exquisite ceramic piecesthat will be auctioned off at the event. (You’re Fired is a ce-ramic studio where customers get creative and hand paint theirown ceramic pieces.) Pottery items to be auctioned off at thefundraiser include a variety of accessories for the home and

garden. The children are really excited about this event!

The fundraiser is being held at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford Housein Grosse Pointe Shores. Check out next month’s article formore specific information (date, time, ticket price, etc.).

While the Marty Lyons Foundation has been around for overtwo decades, it is new to the Michigan area. We are dedi-cated to making the organization a success. Our New Yorkoffice grants nearly 100 wishes to children with terminal or lifethreatening illnesses every year. It would be great if the Michi-gan chapter could do the same.

In order to make the Marty Lyons Foundation a success, weneed help from the community. Cummings, McClorey, Davis& Acho is doing a lot to assist the Foundation, but we needsupport from individuals and businesses as well. We have avariety of sponsorship levels available. If you or your busi-ness would like information on becoming a sponsor, pleasecontact Theresa Boyer at (734) 261-2400 or via e-mail [email protected].
