    Tuesday, November 18th 2014 - Wednesday, November 26th 2014

    AAKASA DEEPAM/ VISHNU DEEPAM/ BON FIRE/ DEEPOTSAVAM

Karthika Pournami, Thursday, November 6th at 8:30 PM

Temple will be brilliantly glowing with decoration of more than a thousand oil lamps! Temples would light a Deepam and would bring

the large deepam to the top of the Dhwaja Sthambam Pole and tie it there on Karthika Pournami. This deepam is called as Akasa

Deepam and Vishnu Deepam is observed on the full moon day in month of Karthika Masam. It is observed by lighting a bonfire based

on the legend of Thrivikrama (Vamana Avatar) of Lord Vishnu. The legend associated with Vishnu Deepam is an interpretation of

Lord Vamana asking three steps of land from King Bali. Here instead of land it is based on the movement of sun and earth. It is said

that the two steps of Lord Vamana are the Uttarayan and vernal equinox. And the third step which sends Bali to the underworld is the

autumn equinox and the bonfire lit on Vishnu Deepam remembers this evening.

Devotees can offer Laksha Votthilu deepam on

Karthika Pournami Day for Tulasi Plant, Raavi

SRI LAKSHMI HAYAGRIVA STOTRAM SERIES Hayagrieva Stotram - Slokas 21 & 22

    ...will continue in next newsletter

Sriman Nigamantha Desika composed 33 slokas describing the greatness of Hayagriva. The Lord Himself made him compose

the hymn where each sloka incorporates some Bi:ja aksharas.

We have covered Slokas 1 18 in previous newsletters. In November 2014 newsletter we will cover slokas 21 and 22.

If one takes note -Kulasekar is constantly praying to his own 'mind' for the past few slokas. In the 11th sloka too he prays to his mind and

asks it to not worry about the Yama or what Yama might do over all his accumulated sins. He confidently says that none of those will hold

up when we have pledged allegiance to 'Sri Dharan' - the one who is has 'Sri' MahaLakshmi with him always. He chooses to use this name to

help us understand the power of the Lord who along with Mahalakshmi will shower us their blessings by nullifying our sins. He further goes

on to demand his mind not procrastinate any further having known this. He says quite confidently that once we declare ourselves as His

(Krishna's) servant He will come to our rescue and save us - but we must condition ourselves to do so!!.

O personification of knowledge and joy! In the depths of our heart, we meditate upon

Your Lotus-Feet always. The golden anklets adorning Your Feet sparkle always anew

and dazzle our eyes. It is as if several Suns assemble at one place and shine forth. Just

as the light of the Sun banishes darkness, so too, the brilliance of Your Feet can

banish the darkness of ignorance and Va:sana:s (tendencies) in us. The Lotus unfolds

at the appearance of the early morning Sun, so also, my soul blossoms with joy due to

the service of Your golden Feet. I always meditate upon Your Lotus-Feet.

Let's examine the 11th Sloka in the 11th month of this year from the former Chera Raja who became Kulasekara Azhwar due to his immense

love towards the Lord, which goes like below

O Protector of Ve:da:s! Your Lotus-Feet are adorned by gem-studded anklets. The sounds emanating from them are melodious

music to our ears. It is as if Ve:dic sounds arose out of them. In different ages, You assumed different forms like a fish or swan

and rescued the Ve:da:s lost by Bramha. All great devotees consider that, service to You is of utmost importance and adorn their

head and neck with divine ornaments obtained from You. They study the Ve:da:s and keep them as ornaments of the neck and

keep Your Feet as ornaments of the head. From those Feet, the anklets give off melodious sounds. All those sounds are of the

Ve:da:s themselves, we look upon the anklets as the jewel box of the Ve:da:s.
