We are now into our last quarter of 2013 and Moss Creek is doing very well. Our financial position has continued to be solid, our amenities are well maintained, and the Membership appears to approve of the Board’s performance. That is, judging from our Special Meeting on October 22, we believe that after only two general questions, you, the Members, are satisfied with the performance not only of the Board, but also of Administration, general management and staff operations. In addition to the various reports offered at the meeting, including infor-mation on the Gatehouse, the Long Range Plan, financial status and an overview from the President, we welcomed three new Board Mem-bers for CY 2014-2017. They are Katy Myer, Lou Natale and Law-rence Taylor. Presently, we have three identifiable projects that remain open and are scheduled for completion in 2014: the Gatehouse, Road Paving and, of course, the Dog Park. With a Capital Project Budget for 2013 of $1,308,963, as of September we spent $533,933, leaving a balance of $775,088 comprised primarily of open items for the Water Oak Utility operations. In accordance with information provided to you by Chuck Eberly in the Long Range Plan discussion, next year we are consider-ing the integrity of the Causeway and the construction of the new Gatehouse as major expenditures. The refurbishment of Water Oak Waste Treatment Plant #2 is also anticipated in 2014. Jan Alpert, in her Treasurer’s Report, reviewed our financial position, comparison of August results to Budget, and an anticipated year end favorable cash outlook. The Finance Committee will be reviewing options for cash allocation and provide recommendations to the Board in November. As a result of our continued positive financial performance, we have reduced the Association Fee increase from 4% to 3.5% for 2014. The Activity Fee will remain at $1,000 for 2014, but we expect that it may be increased to $1,200 in 2015. Our Operating and Capital Project Budgets for 2014 have been reviewed and approved by the Finance Committee, the Board, and Administration Management. We continue to act and plan based on our fiduciary responsibilities. Our General Manager, Cliff Charnes, updated us in his semi-annual operations report and his remarks of an early retirement at the end of this year struck a chord with everyone present. We certainly wish him and Liz an enjoyable retirement and hope that they will experience a more leisurely life style here in Moss Creek. If you were unable to attend the Special Board Meeting I would urge you to go to our web site and review the reports provided at that time. Also on our web site, is the current form for requesting to serve on a MC Committee. Please consider applying and becoming part of the decision making process.

MCOA Board President With regard to our financial status for the nine months ended September 2013, Revenue is slightly down by approximately $337, and Expenses are also down by approximately $259,000. Bottom line, we had a Net Surplus of $1,407,000 which is over budget by $668,000. This includes Certificate Income of $1,172,000 which is over budget by $327,000. Again, our financial position continues to be positive after nine months of operations.

Community News

There have been questions regarding the “dead” oak tree located at the entrance to Cedar Lane.

When this 250 year old live oak was struck by light-ning, Jones Brothers was contacted. They have

asked, at their expense, to try to save the tree with fertilizer injections before removing as a last resort.

We have been told there are no safety concerns to our residents.

I have a couple of things to mention this month. One is the recent crimes we experienced and the other is the addition of two more AEDs (total of six) to Moss Creek. I will list all of the locations below, should they be needed.

As for crime, Bluffton and Hilton Head are continuing to experience a high volume of vehicle break-ins even though the vehicles are unlocked. Entering an unlocked vehicle is still a crime of Breaking and Entering. Moss Creek experienced this first hand re-cently and it appears that ALL communities are vulnerable.

I have asked the Security staff to be vigilant during their residential patrols to include checking vehicles for suspicious activity. Should they observe anything out of the ordinary, they are to investigate their concerns. I have read many reports where Members were called during the hours of darkness for interior lights being on in their unlocked vehicles.

Criminals need three things in their favor to be successful: • Motive—A need or reason to commit. • Opportunity—The ease and ability to quickly and safely complete the act.

• Risk—Low probability to get caught and punished for the act.

Live Oak Tree Restoration Employees of Moss Creek have a new way to be recog-nized for their excellent service to both Members and staff. October kicked off the O’Fishially Awesome program, which acknowledges employees who go above and be-yond their job descriptions to make Moss Creek a better place.

“This is a way to provide a small recognition for the little things that our employees do that sometimes go unheralded,” said Cliff Charnes, GM, “and a pilot for a recognition program that will open to Moss Creek Mem-bers in January. At that time, they’ll also have the opportunity to submit nominees.”

During the pilot, managers and employees are encouraged to complete a nomination card when they notice an employee doing something spe-cial. The cards are held at HR, and a random drawing is held each month, to choose five “o’fishially awesome” nominees to win a Parker’s gas card. The other nominees receive a box of Swedish Fish as a way to say thank you, and all receive certificates of appreciation.

In the first month of the program, thirteen people were nominated. The five who received gas cards at the end of October are: Karim Boualam (Clubhouse), Ronaldo Hernandez (Clubhouse), Joe Leva (Security), Am-ber Reynolds (Fitness Center), and Sally Wamsley (Accounting).

At the end of each quarter, all of the nomination cards will be placed in a random drawing for a larger award.

Overseeding will be completed by the time this article is released. Here are some things we are doing or have done. We were able to build our first advantage tee on #1 South when the course was closed for overseeding. Pruning trees on the courses and in the Community has been on our daily schedule for the past month and for the coming months. We were asked by the Bluffton Fire Department to trim all tree limbs hanging over the roads to protect their trucks. We continue to improve our sustainability and commitment to the Audubon with new recycle projects around our maintenance center and within our operations.

Green Committee Update The Green Committee has received several inquiries regarding the placement of the white blocks regulating cart traffic. The blocks are utilized for two purposes. The first is to create multiple entry points for carts and the second is to ensure wet areas are protected from damage. Mitchell Wilkerson and his staff are mindful that long walks from cart paths are less than desirable and will make every effort to place the blocks as near to the greens as possible.

The location of the tee markers on par threes has come under review. To increase the variety of shot values as holes are relo-cated from front to middle to back, Mitchell has directed his assistant superintendents take over the placement of tee markers with the goal of changing the playing distance when holes are repositioned.

At this time of year, the topic of overseeding moves front and center. During the week of Oct 6, we overseeded the North Course. This is necessary due to the age of the fairway grass and the relatively small surface area of our greens. Without overseeding, fairway lies would become quite tight and in some locations bare surfaces would emerge. Planting winter rye grass on the fairways creates more desirable conditions during the winter months. As it relates to the greens, without over-seed the speed would become too fast, thus making the greens borderline unplayable.

The South Course is a completely different matter. As a result of re-grassing the fairways last year, no overseeding of the fair-ways is required. It is estimated the fairways will not go dormant until mid-December and reemerge in mid-March. Addition-ally, the Celebration is so dominant, it has a tendency to choke any grass used in the over-seed process. Par three tees and greens will be overseeded to ensure optimal playing conditions during the winter season.

The overseed on the South greens will differ from the North due to the high level of thatch and impurities that have developed over time on the North. The North greens require a higher rate of seed and heavier top dressing. The South on the other hand will require less seed and little or no sand during the overseed process. While both North and South greens consist of a simi-lar type grass, maintenance requirements differ due to their significant age differences.

We have made the decision to build the Advantage Tees on the South course next summer. Mitchell and his staff will build the tee on #1 this fall so all can see what to expect from this project.

Finally, a reminder. Be vigilant when approaching Moss Creek Drive and all road crossings in golf carts. Please be certain to make a complete stop and look for oncoming traffic. Automobiles have the right of way and traffic may not stop as you attempt to cross.

Moss Creek hosted the Midcap Interclub on Thursday, October 31, 2013 on the North Course. It was a beautiful day for golf. Con-gratulations to the teams of Moss Creek and Palmetto Hall for the tie with the low scores of the day with team totals of 278. Berkeley Hall was close with a third place finish of 284.

November is a busy month and a lot of rounds of golf will be played. Over the holidays, we kindly remind you to make sure family members who are visiting abide by the proper dress code when using the practice areas or playing golf. Fun events this month include; the Ladies Nine Club Champi-onship, the Moss Creek Marines Charity Tournament, the WGA Fall Member-Guest, the Men’s Team Round Robin, The WGA Closing Tournament and the Ladies Nine Couples Championship. Hand towels are provided in golf carts as a courtesy service. The towels are not ‘tournament favors’ or Member’s personal property. In August we received a shipment of 288 new tow-els to start replacing old and worn out towels. We took an inventory of the new towels and we are already down to 222; 66 missing in only two months.

Each month it is always fun to highlight staff member accomplishments. Join me in congratulating Dylan Wright on passing his Player’s Ability Test. Dylan works part-time in outside services for the Golf Shop while he is attending the Professional Golfer’s Career College in

Bluffton. Dylan passed the Player’s Ability Test (PAT) Sunday, October 6, on the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University by shooting a round of 75 in the morn-ing and 79 in the afternoon. The PAT is a 36-hole tourna-ment where there is a target score you must shoot or be-low as one of the first steps of entering the PGA Golf Man-agement Program. Congratulations, Dylan! Head Golf Professional, Tom Logue, made the Honors Cup team; each year the top 12 PGA Professionals and 12 top amateurs in the area have a Ryder Cup style competition called the Honors Cup. This year’s event was held at Calla-wassie Island Club Mon-day, October 21. Con-gratulations to the Professionals for winning with 10 ½ points over the amateur’s 7 ½ points.

Annual Mixed Member-Guest

The 2013 Annual Mixed Member-Guest was held October 3, 4 & 5. It was a terrific event and the weather could not have been more perfect. Participants enjoyed three rounds of golf including one practice round and two competitive rounds, a welcome reception, tournament favors, and a dinner awards dance following the last round Saturday evening. The for-mat included a different format for every nine holes including two-person Chapman where both scores counted, better ball of the men plus better ball of the women, better ball of Members plus better ball of guests, and any two best balls of the four. This was a net event with stableford scoring. Congratulations to the overall champions, Mary Pat & Fred Bon-chosky and their guests, Cindy & Gregg Parsons. A big shout out to Peter Halsey for chairing and organizing the event and to mixed golf chair, Dori Barnes. Congratulations to all winners and thank you for participating in this wonderful an-nual tournament!

The 2013 WGA Member-Member Ringer Tournament was held on the South Course October 16-17. This event is a better ball of partners both days and the winner is deter-mined by the best combined 18-hole better

ball net score over both days. Congratulations to our Overall Champions, two consecutive years, Debbie Hengemuhle/Andy Grindrod beating their score from last year by 2 shots with a 58. The first flight winners was Suki Brainard/Melissa Nie-berding with 64, second flight was Donna Cawthon/Elizabeth Jacobson, and third flight was tied by Judy Minnich/Sandy Reed and Helen Blevins/Ginny Quattropani.

The 2013 Men’s Club Championship was held over the weekends of October 12 & 13 and Oc-tober 19 & 20. The format was single elimina-tion match play on the South Course. The Championship Flight was played at scratch and there was a stroke play qualifier to determine seeding in the 16-player bracket. All other

flights were seeded into 8-player brackets by handicap index and matches were played with 100% handicap off the low ball.

Train Off Court to be Better on Court

Prevention of Common Tennis Injuries and Tennis Exhibition On Friday, November 15, the Moss Creek Tennis Center and the Moss Creek Fitness Center will combine forces and provide a program for all Members. We will be focusing on the prevention of common tennis injuries. Lee Snider from the MC Fitness Center will be on hand to give an interactive presentation on what you can do to keep your body in top physical shape and maximize your time on court. Immediately following the presentation, we will have a tennis exhibi-tion featuring Tom Ruth and 3 other pros from the TLC Staff. Cost is only $10 for Members and will include soda, beer, wine, and snacks. Program will start at 4:00pm and the exhibition will begin around 5:15pm.

Court Time Change Starting November 1, the Moss Creek Tennis Courts will now be open from 8:30am-12:30pm and 2:30pm-10:00pm. The Pro Shop hours will remain 8:00am-12:00pm and 2:00pm-6:00pm. Court bookings will remain in two hour blocks for all courts other than court #2.

Moss Creek Tennis Club Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet The MCTC Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet will be held on Sunday, November 10, starting at 6:00pm. This event serves as the annual business meeting for the MCTC. New board members will be introduced, as well as handling of old and new business for the club. The MCTC will also be recognizing the 2013 Club Champions. Sign up is posted in the Tennis Center. Moss Creek Marines The Moss Creek Marines Tennis event will be hosted on Thursday, November 7, from 9:00am-12:00pm. There will be a new and exciting format for this year’s event. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up today for this great fundraiser for the Moss Creek Marines. Congratulations to Tom Ruth and the 18 & Over 9.5 Combo

Tom Ruth partnered with Garrett Leal won the 9.5 Combo State Championship. Gavin Cox and Mike O’Regan from Tennis Leadership Camps was also part of the team.

As we enter the USTA off-season, this is the perfect time to start an off-court training program that will benefit your on-court tennis game. A weight and stretching program designed specifically for tennis can

make a big difference. Some of the areas that you want to work on are; develop a stronger mid-section, in-crease the strength and flexibility in your arms and shoulders and build strength and endurance of your legs. Besides helping your tennis, a weight and flexibility program will also help you avoid those pesky injuries.

It's definitely worth your time and energy to train off court to become better on the court. For more informa-tion, be sure to attend the session at the Tennis Center on Friday, November 15.

Recently a client of mine shared with me a story about a friend of his and that friend’s mother. I thought it had a relevance to what we offer at your Fitness Center. So I thought I would share it with you. One day, while talking to his mother, John was surprised to hear that she was feeling very lonely. Her husband had passed away a few years prior and although she was ac-tive in her community and often attended social events, she expressed strong feelings of loneliness and a desire not to continue living. His mother was very healthy. She was in her late 80’s, but went to her fitness center four to five times each week. She had a very good routine of both weight training and aerobic exercise and it kept her quite fit and healthy. Surprised by the comments of wishing her life would soon end, John was unsure of how to respond. He paused, and then looked at her with concern and love, as would any good son, and this is what he said, “Mom, I am sorry you feel this way. I know how much you must miss Dad, but if you want to go and be with him sooner, for goodness sake, quit going to the gym so much!” Appar-ently this comment caught her by surprise and she found it to be both funny and sensible. Her melancholic mood, at least for the present, was ended. Each of you that live in Moss Creek is blessed to have such

a wonderful Fitness Center right at your back door. There is

no “fountain of youth” and there are no magic pills. Sci-

ence, research and studies though have taught us one very

good thing: If you want some assurance of longevity of life

and the quality of that time to be good, then you can ac-

complish that with some assurance by being active yes, but

even better than that by having a regular exercise routine

of aerobic exercise, strength training and good sound nutri-

tion. I challenge you to take me up on it. I look forward to

meeting you soon and putting you on the way to better

health!

2014 Committee Volunteers Sought

Each December, the MCOA Board forms their advisory committees in-

cluding the Chairs, and the assistant committee Members (Board Mem-

bers). The Chairpersons work to put together the full committees

before year-end, and wherever possible, honor volunteer’s requests.

The Committee sizes are limited, so please list your second choice on

the form. The active committees include the Finance, Green, House,

Real Estate/Marketing, ARB, Water Oak, Bostwick Recreational Commit-

tee, Community Pride, and Long Range Planning Committee.

Moss Creek Members who have an interest in serving on one of the

Board’s committees can request a position prior to November 15,

2013, by completing the application found on the home page of the

website. This form will also be included as part of the weekly e-blast

to Members. You may submit the information via email at moss-

[email protected] or, mail to Suzanna Johnston at

1523 Fording Island Road, HHI, 29926.

Hula Hooping Program

Thursday, November 7, from 5:30 – 7pm kicks off our hula hooping program with a hoop making work-shop at Bostwick Pavilion! We will learn the funda-mentals of hooping at 4pm on Tuesday, November 12; Thurs- day, No-vember 14; and Tues-day, Novem- ber 19. We’ll take a break to al-low you practice and e n j o y Thanksgiv-ing and then we’ll begin to learn tricks on Tuesday, December 10; Thursday, December 12; and Tuesday, December 17, just in time to impress your family for Christmas! Contact the Fitness Center at 836-6160 to sign up for this program which includes your very own specially sized hula hoop and six one-hour long lessons for only $100.

Well, I guess the old adage, “Time flies when you are having fun,” must apply to Moss Creek in the Fall. I can’t believe that we are going to start making our way into the home stretch of 2013. We will actually be decorating the Clubhouse in less than a month and in two months it will be 2014. I know I am getting ahead of myself, so let me slow down and take a deep breath.

I want to start off by saying thank you to all the Members that have made Friday Nights at the Club such a great success. Most Fridays we are doubling the number of Members that came to the Clubhouse in previous years. Over the summer, Friday Nights accounted for 41% of the business done at the Clubhouse and pool facility. Since we like to continue to progress and listen to the Members, I have booked guitarists on Wednesday Nights also. We will continue the same en-tertainment schedule on Fridays, but add entertainment on Wednesdays from 6:00-8:15pm. This will start on November 13, and run through the remainder of November. We will have weekly food and drink specials to accompany the enter-tainment.

Ok, now back to the holidays! We have seen drastic increases in reservations for our holiday events. Two years ago, we had so many reservations for the tree lighting event, that we needed to make it two nights. The last two years, we have followed that format and have averaged around 190 each night. This year we sold out two nights and will average around 225 each night, which is amazing. For the other two events, the Moss Creek Dinner Dance featuring the Headliners and New Year’s Eve, please get your reservations and lottery forms in.

Again I want to thank all the Members for supporting the Club and am looking for a wonderful 2013 Holiday Season.

Members will be accommodated first. Guests will be added to a waitlist and will be eligible to fill open seats after drawing on November 15.

The Clubhouse will notify everyone of their

reservation status by November 17.

I hope that the fishing enthusiasts here in Moss Creek have had as good of luck as I have this fall noodling around in the Low

Country creeks. To a seafood aficionado, there is nothing like fresh fish caught and eaten on the same day. When I want to

keep the meal simple, and I usually do after being out on the water all day, I do it the way my mother always did when I was

growing up. It’s a very simple breading and then, while she always fried in straight olive oil, I add about 50% peanut oil to

raise the smoke point and allow for a slightly higher temperature fry. It’s the one time I use an electric skillet in my house

since it provides perfect temperature control for this delicate fry process. I usually run it right at 375F.
