Principal’s report

Holiday break

I would like to wish everyone a restful and enjoyable term two holiday. It has been a very challenging term and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your resilience, patience and support of the school.

COVID procedures

We are certainly looking forward to further lifting of the COVID restrictions including less attention on congestion. Our OHS committee has been very active in establishing clear guidelines and processes to provide necessary clean-ing, sanitiser and manage congestion.

Lockers

Student lockers will be open from the start of term 3. They will be available from 7.30am and I encourage students to get in early and access lockers and then go to class areas to reduce congestion. Students who have used trolley bags will need to revert back to normal bags as we do not think the trolley bags will fit in the lockers. Stu-dents should only bring in the books they need for the day so that they can minimise their time at lockers. I can say though that the students have managed having their bags with them very well.

Mobile Phones

Students will be required to place mobile phones in their lockers from the start of term 3.

Sport

Students will still be asked to come to school in their PE uniform if they have PE that day. In late term 3 we will be able to undertake excursions, camps and interschool sport.

VCE

There are changes to VCE study designs that teachers are currently assessing and planning for as well as the revised examination schedule for unit 4. Year 12 exams now go from Monday 9 November to 2 December. This change has necessitated modification to other dates. The Head Start program will go from 7 December to Friday 11 December. The end of Year program will begin on 7 December and include a number of excursions and various pre-senters. Booking of which is currently being attended to.

Further updates

Please look for any COMPASS newsfeeds towards the end of the holiday period in case there are any urgent updates.

Have a great break.

Semester 1 Reports

All students having instrumental lessons at the school will have an instrumental music report as part of their semester reports. Like other subjects, some adjustments have been made to assessment due to remote learning, though the categories are similar to what they have been in the past. Students and parents are also encouraged to look at any comments teachers have provided via Learning Tasks throughout the semester. Please also note that the ‘Ensemble Work’ category for beginner students is based on readiness for joining an ensemble in Semester 2 and / or work in small groups within the lesson time.

VCE Music Recital

Students studying VCE Music Performance (Solo) participated in their mid-year recital on Monday 22nd June. A wide range of instrumentalists performed, including drum kit, violin, viola, guitar, saxophone, clarinet and piano. Even with a small audience of those in the class and a few staff members, performing a solo is a daunting experience, and for some, it was their first time doing so. Well done to students on their preparation, organisation and professionalism in the way they approached this task, and of course, on their very enjoyable performances. A big thank-you to their teacher Ms Georgia Bate, for organising this event and also to Mrs Govan, Ms Grunwald, Mrs Carr and Mr Hunter for attending on the night. Thanks also to Ms Liang for helping with accompanying. Lastly, thank you to the parents for their understanding in regards to not being able to attend this year’s event.

Term 3 Lesson Timetables

Lessons for term 3 will begin appearing on Compass shortly. If you don’t see your lesson for Week 1 showing by the time we return to school, please e-mail your teacher to confirm your lesson time.

Ensembles

All students who learn an instrument at the school will be in at least one ensemble from term three onwards, including Year 7 students. All students will be e-mailed their ensemble allocations to their Highvale email account. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns regarding the ensemble(s) you are in. The planned ensemble schedule is below and ensembles will continue to appear as a class on Compass. Rolls are marked at each rehearsal.

** these groups may need to switch rooms at times.

Performances

Due to ongoing uncertainty around COVID-19 restrictions, we are not planning to run our regular Spring Concert this year. Instead, we will be purchasing equipment to enable us to do a livestream concert and to do recordings of ensembles. Each ensemble will be able to participate in at least one of these performance opportunities and there may also be opportunity for soloists and small groups to participate. Any students (especially non-music students) who are interested in helping out with the technical side of these performances should contact [email protected]

Other Musical Opportunities

A number of Highvale students have signed up for the NEVR Virtual Concert Band and Virtual String Orchestra. These students should have received all the information necessary to complete the recording of their parts. Remember to submit these by the due dates, and if you need any help with the recording, please contact [email protected] Details on another opportunity to participate in the broader instrumental music community are below:

The 2020 VIRTUAL Border Music Camp is being held from Sunday 5 July to Saturday 11 July.

Border Music Camp itself, which has been operating for 46 years, is usually a week long residential camp based in Albury, NSW (Australia) for around 230 musicians of all ages, from beginners to advanced students. Musicians play in one of six large ensembles, experiencing rehearsals and tutorials each morning under the guidance of the Camps skilled Conductors and Tu-tors. Musicians travel from across Australia and overseas to take part in Border Music Camp’s unique opportunity in music education.

This year we invite musicians and anyone with an interest in music to join us online and experience Border Music Camp for themselves. There is no charge for this week of music making and fun. Musical opportunities will run in the same period of time as the annual Border Music Camp. You will have the opportunity to meet Alastair McKean , Border Music Camp’s Direc-tor as well as a variety of the Camp’s staff.

A highlight of this year’s Camp will be the mega-online massed choir to be viewed on Saturday evening 11 July. Join us in singing a new work by the Camp’s Composer in Residence Andrew Aronowicz under the direction of conductor Alex Pringle.

The VIRTUAL camp will include tutorials; performances; seminars; trivia; demonstrations of “weird” instruments and “lots of fun stuff”.

Grand Piano Fundraiser

At the Winter Concert in 2019, we launched a fundraiser for a performance level grand piano for the theatre. We believe that such an instrument will greatly enhance our music program, with piano being used in many of our ensembles and to accompany soloists and small groups. We welcome all contributions to the grand piano fund, and are particularly encouraging members of the school community to donate one key of the piano at $200. If you have donated one or more keys, please don’t forget to drop into the office to sign your name on the keyboard print. We are currently at about 2/3 of our target. If you are interested in contributing, please see below for further details.
