MENS GOLF

Hi golfers. Murray, Peter N and I drove off the first tee box just after 10 am yesterday. There was no frost!!! and there was no sunshine because of the fog. However it was otherwise fine weather for a mid October day. There was no one else around except Adam and the grounds keepers. By 11 oclock it was different. The parking lot was three quarters full when we came in about 12:30. We had a fun game with quite reasonable golf played by us all.We have one tee time for 10 am next Wednesday as that reflects the numbers who have been coming out in the last while. Please let me know by 9 am this Monday Oct 22 if you will be joining us at 10 am on Wed Oct 24th as my plan is to advise Adam by 3 pm on Monday how many Tee times we will require.I will be watching the weather forecasts as Oct 24th approaches and may conclude early on Tues Oct 23 that frost is likely for Oct 24th and then make the executive decision to postpone our reservation to 11 am. If I do that I will at the same time email those of you who are playing for your confirmation that you will tee off at the new time ie 11am.

I understand that the course will close at the end of October. Weather permitting we will play again on October 31. Please dress appropriately given the cel-ebrations we expect later that day. Finally , I have decided to retire as your golf coordinator at the end of this season ie Nov 1st. Some of us have been golfing together for 10 years with John Crowe as coodinator for a number of years and then “yours truly’’. While the golf has not always been extraordinary the time together has been good fun. Thank you all for your contribution to that result and thanks also to those of us who have retired for reasons of health or have found something better to do (whatever that might have been).

Regards Bob Hunter

PS “The practice tee is the place to try things out and to work hard , the golf course is the place to let things go, free yourself up. Dont try harder on the golf course. Try less hard.”-Davis Love Jr.

Hike Tuesday October 16th.Marilyn and Ted Hannis of the Grasslands PROBUS Club invited our members to participate in a hike

along the Bear Creek Flume trails near the Adams River. However, only Bob, Katy and Colin took them up on their offer and joined with 12 of their members on a most enjoyable hike along the Upper Flume Trail in glorious fall weather. The trail ascended steeply paralleling Bear Creek that tumbles down to meet the Adams River. Remnants of the original flume were visible at various points along the trail, with historical markers detailing the history of the flume. It was a circular route that was quite rugged in place, but well maintained with new bridges and steps replacing those that had been damaged by vigorous runoff last year! Salmon were present in the lower reaches of the river and the party hiked part of the lower flume trail to meet the Adams River. If you have never hiked these trails they are certainly worth the effort.Photos 1, 2, 3 – along the trailPhoto 4: one of the many falls along Bear CreekPhoto 5: Bob, Katy and Colin showing that they reached their destination! - Colin James

Hike Thursday October 18th.In Jim’s absence Bill Flynn led a group of 11 (6 from our club and 2 each from the TR and Grasslands Clubs) up Tranquille Creek. Yet again the weather was fine and the trees were showing their glorious fall colours. The hike is a ‘gentle stroll’ along a well-developed path (apart from the early stretch where a beaver dam has forced water over the trail!). Evidence of beaver activity was everywhere and attempts have been made to protect some of the trees. Gold panners were also active and Pat Petley joined them and retrieved a few ‘nuggets’ from the river (well, perhaps not ‘nuggets’!). A leisurely hike along the creek followed by a welcome lunch at the Kamloops Golf and Country Club. Thanks Bill for an enjoyable venture. -Colin JamesFall Colours

TASTER’S CHOICE

SIPPERS WINE TASTING GROUP MEETING OCTOBER 4, 2018

Hosted by Judy and Jim Brown and attended by Ron Haywood, Jody and her friend Pat from Austra-lia, Joan and Steve Quiney, Caroline Laitinen, Sue and Art Lacourciere had to cancel at the last minute because of snow in Alberta.

Meeting focused on Carménère Wine and here is some Wikipedia information about it:The Carménère grape is a wine grape variety originally planted in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, France, where it was used to produce deep red wines and occasionally used for blending purposes in the same manner as Petit Verdot.A member of the Cabernet family of grapes, the name “Carménère” originates from the French word for crimson (carmin) which refers to the brilliant crimson colour of the autumn foliage prior to leaf-fall. The grape is also known as Grande Vidure, a historic Bordeaux synonym, although current Euro-pean Union regulations prohibit imports under this name into the European Union. Along with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, Carménère is considered part of the original six red grapes of Bordeaux. Now rarely found in France, the world’s largest area planted with this variety is in Chile, with more than 8,800 hectares (2009) cultivated in the Central Valley. As such, Chile produces the vast majority of Carménère wines available today and as the Chilean wine industry grows, more experimentation is being carried out on Carménère’s potential as a blending grape, especially with Cabernet Sauvignon.Carménère is also grown in Italy’s Eastern Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions and in smaller quantities in California, Walla Walla, and Rocking-ham County, North Carolina in the United States. The 3 wines in the photo below were blind sampled and the Sibaris on the right was preferred by most of us with the Falernia on the left coming in a close second.

The Barnes Lake trails on October 11It was a beautiful day as we trekked across open rangeland with great vistas of the valley, dotted with bluebird boxes (now empty) and into the semi-open fir-pine stands at the higher elevations. A fairly easy

walk of about 6.5 km that took us about 2 ½ hours to complete. Downside was I was the only hiker there from our club; all the others (5) were from Grasslands. I hope the low turnout from our club was because of demographics and not leadership style!- Bob Jennejohn
