Dear Parents,

This week, August 20 to 26 is Migrant and Refugee Week with next Sunday celebrated as Migrant and Refugee Sunday.

The Catholic Church, through the Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office, pleads the cause of refugees and asylum seekers because the Gospel compels us to do so. We remain hopeful that the hearts and minds of Australia’s people will increasingly support the more humane treatment of refugees and asylum seekers. The nation’s response should be just, compassionate and consistent with our obligations under International Law and the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees and other Conventions to which Australia is a signatory.

The Church in Australia is the Church of migrant Catholics from many countries and where the Eucharist is celebrated in more than thirty languages every Sunday. Migrants leave their homes in search of a better life and face the difficult experience of migration in its various forms.

Pope Francis writes: “Throughout the first years of my pontificate, I have repeatedly expressed my particular concern for the lamentable situation of many migrants and refugees fleeing from war, persecution, natural disasters and poverty. This situation is undoubtedly a “sign of the times” which I have tried to interpret, with the help of the Holy Spirit, ever since my visit to Lampedusa on 8 July 2013.

Every stranger who knocks at our door is an opportunity for an encounter with Jesus Christ, who identifies with the welcomed and rejected strangers of every age (Matthew 25:35-43). The Lord entrusts to the Church’s motherly love every person forced to leave their homeland in search of a better future. This solidarity must be concretely expressed at every stage of the migratory experience – from departure through journey to arrival and return. This is a great responsibility, which the Church intends to share with all believers and men and women of good will.”

Pope Francis has called us to respond to the many challenges of contemporary migration with generosity, promptness, wisdom and foresight, each according to their

own abilities. In this regard, he wishes to reaffirm that “our shared response may be articulated by four verbs: to welcome, to protect, to promote and to integrate”.

BISHOP PAUL BIRD VISIT

Tomorrow we welcome Bishop Paul Bird to St Brigid’s as part of his Official Visit to the Horsham Parish. Bishop Paul will spend time with our Young Vinnies group and their important ministry, visit a number of classrooms, meet with our RE faculty and participate in a Question and Answer session with our Year 11 cohort. Bishop Paul will also be visiting Ss Michael and John’s Primary school and OLHC Primary school, Murtoa during his stay in Horsham.

YEAR 8 CAMP

Our Year 8 students next week will enjoy the thrills and spills of their Year 8 Camp at the Roses Gap Recreation Centre. The camp’s objectives include opportunities for our students to experience fun, adventure, exploration of the outdoors, attainment of skills in the outdoors and the development of teamwork amongst all. Many thanks to Leigh McDonald for his organisation of the camp and to the many staff who supported Leigh on the camp.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

We offer our prayerful support to the following families: the Panozzo family on the recent death of former student, Cory Panozzo and to the McGrath family on the recent death of Bill McGrath, Grandfather of Mia (Yr 8). Our prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time. Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College Peter Gutteridge Principal

On Monday, the students participated in a treasure hunt and had to go to different parts of the school based on pirate jokes. Kira Guest and Kaleisha McKerron came in first place and Ryan Brown, Levi Werner and Jack French came in second place.

On Tuesday, we had pirate and 'treasure' themed charades. Rachel Kemp, Morgan Lord, Victoria Taylor and Sophie Fechner came in first place with their team named 'Baby Shark Dododododo', Gerard Natividad, Mia Panozzo and Tayla Nagorcka came in second place with their team 'Yeet North and South' and Chloe McKinnon, Jayde McKinnon and Levi Werner came in third place with their team 'The McWerners.' Some hilarious moments included Rachel yelling 'gold' in different tones despite it not being the answer, Mia using Miss Brack and Miss Schilling as props to recreate the 'treasured' children's book Charlotte's Web and Daniel Werner throwing himself on a table.

1st Place—Charades 1st Place—Treasure Hunt 2nd Place—Treasure Hunt

On Wednesday, we had the On Your Box public speaking contest. Due to popular demand, the Spelling Bee was replaced by this activity in which the students are given a topic to speak about for as long as possible without saying 'um or 'argh.'

Tayla Nagorcka finally won the senior section with her speech on 'How to be everyone's favourite person', going over her top seven tips before finally saying 'um.' She reminded us all about the importance of a smile or a handshake to show people that you are approachable and that you care. Honourable mentions to Mia Panozzo who managed to weave her favourite film 'Ice Age 4' into the conversation, Alex 'Goldie' Goldsmith for his speech about a parrot who landed on his shoulder and was 'a pretty good bloke' until he accidentally made a mess on his shoulder and Katie Morris whose Megan Fox strut will not be forgotten by those present.

Gus Geue was the winner of the intermediate section for his speech on 'Why football should be banned', despite the fact he only got through 'I think' before saying 'um.' Nevertheless, he walked away with the prize for his three second speech as there were no other entries from the Year 9 - 10 students.

Millie Jacobs put her gift of the gab to the test with her speech about her dog who is apparently 'long' and 'pregnant.' She spoke for 20 seconds to take out the main prize, ahead of Levi Werner for his 13 second speech on 'Why I wish Homer Simpson was my dad' because he's 'famous' and 'hilarious.'

The next College Trip to Japan is scheduled for September 2019, and MUST BE COMMITTED TO in the next three or four weeks. Students from Yrs 9 - 12 are eligible.

The World Rugby Cup is happening in Japan at the same time, and flights and accommodation in that period are already so tight that we have tentatively booked for a group of twenty, so as to be sure to be able to run the trip at all. Other periods have been considered, but for a variety of reasons, including making possible a two- or three-day visit to our sister school of Matsudo Kokusai, leaving Horsham towards the end of Term 3 is the only really possible time.

The itinerary will be similar to that used on our last trip - three days in Tokyo which will include a full day in Disneyland, two or three days in Nikko which will include a full day at the Samurai/Ninja Theme Park (Edo-Mura), two or three days with host families at our sister school which will include a day of school life and one and a half or two weekend days with our host families, 4 or 5 days in the Hiroshima area which will include a half-day visit to the Hiroshima Peace Park, and lots of free souvenir shopping and exploring time on the stunning island of Miyajima, and a visit to the beautiful 400-year-old Himeji Castle on our way back to Osaka for the last three or four days. In those last days, we

will travel at least twice to the wonderful city of Kyoto, and spend a crazy day at Universal Studios Theme Park. We will visit famous temples, castles, and shopping precincts in almost all locations we stay in, and climb the sacred mountain of Konpira on the island of Shikoku. As students become more familiar with the language and culture, there will be more and more opportunities for small-group free explorations.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE STUDYING JAPANESE TO GO ON THIS SCHOOL TRIP!!!

EVERYTHING - all meals, domestic and air travel, accommodation, entrance fees, airport taxes, etc - IS COVERED IN THE ESTIMATED COST OF THE TRIP. Long distance travel will almost all be done on the Bullet Train (Shinkansen), and accommodation will be twin- and multi-share in good quality hotels. The cost of obtaining a passport is not included in this price, but a group travel insurance package is.

The estimated cost is necessarily at this stage provisional, and may fluctuate if the value of the Australian dollar against the yen changes significantly over the next thirteen months, or if the cost of airfares increases significantly. Working on the current value of the yen to the dollar, and the current cost of airfares to Japan, we need to be looking at $5,800 - $6,000 per participant.

Because of the extreme pressure on accommodation and flights, the College must make a firm booking within the next five weeks, and so a non-refundable deposit of $300 will be required to be paid by all participants by the end of Term 3 (Sept 21) this year. A meeting will be held in the College Library on Wednesday 12th September at 7:30 p.m. and is open to all interested parties. Please try to be there, or, if unable to, contact Jeni Allen to express a firm level of interest and acquire further information.

I look forward to seeing you there! Jeni Allen

Our school is supporting the Dignity Drive in August. There are women that are homeless, escaping domestic violence or in poverty and need our help. For this month, the organisation is asking if people could donate sanitary items to the pink box at the front of our school. They are appreciative of donations of sanitary pads and tampons, which they will collect and distribute.
