Cambie Secondary

Dear Parents and Guardians: The month of November has flown by and I can’t believe that we are about to enter the final month of 2017. As I take a moment to reflect back on the past month, there are many things we need to celebrate.

Last month I wrote about the importance of parents being actively involved in their child’s learning. This month, I acknowledge the different ways that parents were involved. Thank you to the many parents of Gr. 9 students who supported our annual “Take Our Kids to Work” day on November 1st. Approximately 75% of our Gr. 9 student population participated in this worthwhile experience. Our parent community also responded well to our Term 1 Parent-Teacher Conferences (Nov. 1/2) by coming in to meet with teachers to discuss your child’s progress. I cannot overstate the importance of parents remaining involved in their child’s learning, checking in with them daily regarding their homework, maintaining ongoing communication with teachers, and acknowledging and supporting their efforts.

I would like to thank all the families who supported our PAC by participating in the poinsettia, wreath and planter fundraiser. Our PAC members work hard to support our school and this fundraiser helps to support our Dry Grad Celebration. Before we know it, we will be speaking about year-end events, and one of the special events is graduation for our Gr. 12 students. The school organizes the grad dinner and dance on June 27th, and this event is followed by a dry after grad celebration that is organized by parent volunteers. I urge as many parents as possible to become involved in volunteering to help with the dry grad event. This event is not possible without the help of many people. Please contact our PAC chair, Tara Pipke ([email protected]) to inquire about different ways in which you can be involved in the planning of this event, or helping out with the set-up, clean up, or assisting on the night of the event (June 27th, 2018). Thank you in advance for making this event possible!

Term 1 Report Cards are just around the corner and we have been working hard to hold students accountable to complete their homework and assignments as a way to demonstrate their understanding of the course learning standards. Being accountable for work completion is a focus of “Raising the Bar” and is a work habit that is critical for success. Students Attend the ‘We For She’ Conference Sixteen Cambie students participated in the fourth annual We For She Conference sponsored by the Provincial Government, Vancouver Board of Trade and the Women’s Enterprise Centre. This Conference is one of North America’s largest gathering of women’s organizations, business leaders, and young women. The focus of the conference was to support women in the workplace, inspire young women to be bold in their careers, creating positive mindsets, and learning to take leadership roles in championing gender diversity in society and business. The following students participated in this amazing day… Gurleen Aujla, Tanvir Dosanjh, Heba Ghrebi, ShinMei Javier, Ashna Chand, Aaliyah Egharevba, Tanvir Dosanjh, Evie Chan, Fadia Haidar, Esha Sodhi, Nicole Piramide, Alvina Shankar, Maia Perdido, Badoor Alsaiari, Ella Dawe, Hawa Farah, and Israa Fadel.

October Staff Collaboration Time On October 25th, Cambie staff met in small groups to explore different aspects of enhancing student learning and student engagement. The purpose of these sessions is to enhance the learning experience for our students. The following are the topics that we had discussions about:

• Setting up class websites and adding students in to give them access. • Presentation on Curio.ca by Rebecca Rubio – District Library and Information Services Coordinator • Spring Production – discussing design elements • Test taking and studying strategies workshop planning meeting • Math numeracy exam, realigning the curriculum at the senior level, strategies for struggling students • Student Accountability and Assessment - where are we? demonstration using the iPad as a teaching tool.

“I was so proud of the young women that attended this Conference with me. I was impressed and inspired by the way they engaged in conversations with the business women at their tables, other young people, and the coordinators/sponsors of the event. These young women have a lot to offer and they made a huge impression on some of the event leaders.” Mrs. Curtis

Hundreds of senior business women and high school students came together to hear inspirational/motivational messages from business and community leaders, elected officials, and young entrepreneurs. These young women from H.J. Cambie Secondary will, without a doubt, make a difference in their own communities, and perhaps, become part of this next generation of community leaders, CEOs, and elected officials.

Counselling Department News STUDY TIPS SESSION SUMMARY One of our efforts to Raise the Bar this year is by providing direct teaching of strategies for success so that there is no confusion about how this can be achieved. In September’s newsletter our teachers contributed to an article outlining 10 tips for studying. On Nov 9, we successfully launched our first session in a series of opportunities for academic support available to students on a voluntary basis or by recommendation from teachers or parents. More than 40 students attended Study Tips and Tactics in the library at lunch. Students were engaged and learning about active studying and specific strategies to help them make the most of study time. Overall feedback was positive and students requested additional information on time management, organization and test prep. These topics will guide our preparation of future sessions. Stay tuned for upcoming dates. The study tips are available in the September copy of the newsletter, on the website under the heading Study Tips and Tactics or in PDF format under the Students tab. If your child missed the session but you would like them to have the info please notify their counsellor or resource teacher and we may arrange a second opportunity if interest is high. By directly teaching study strategies we hope to increase student success and engagement. When students have strategies to draw from they are equipped to make better use of their study time, resulting in working SMARTER not Harder! RAISING AWARENESS

Last spring a small group of Cambie students attended a Mental Health Awareness day at Palmer Secondary. The day was geared to leaning more about how mental health impacts youth and reducing stigma around mental well-being and illness. These same students, with the support of Ms. Wilding, have embraced the idea of promoting youth mental health awareness at Cambie this year. The goals of the group are to promote a holistic understanding of health, increase understanding through education, promote prevention and the development of resiliency and reduce stigma associated with talking about mental health. We are looking forward to a number of initiatives, the first of which is the introduction of Wellness Wednesday Announcements to students. The information is shared with students via our school announcements, website and other social media. The MHA ambassadors prepare a short, but relevant fact drawing from any of 12 educational modules taken sourced from www.heretohelp.ca on topics ranging from healthy eating, sleeping & digital use to stress reduction, living life with balance, healthy relationships and healthy thinking, to name a few. Stay tuned to hear about more initiatives from this group in promoting a deeper understanding that health and wellness includes balancing and meeting one’s physical, social, environmental, emotional, and spiritual needs. If you have questions about wellness and mental health a few helpful resources are listed below or please feel free to contact your student’s counsellor. Update from the Cambie School Library

Books can be checked out for a two-week period, while magazines are checked out for one week. Reference books continue to be circulated as overnight loans. If you need a resource for a longer period of time, we are happy to renew it for you. We are in the process of organizing another Cambie Reading Riot: Richmond’s Teen Readers’ Choice Award for 2017-2018. Stay tuned for more information!

Mrs. Kos Teacher-Librarian

Hello Cambie community! We continue to be extremely busy in the library, with 818 circulations in the last month alone! Our grade 8s checked out the most books and resources, followed by grades 9, 10, 11 and 12. It is wonderful to see so many students show a love of reading. Mrs. Kos and Ms. Cho are always here to help you, so please continue to use the library often, and feel free to offer new ideas and title suggestions so we can continue to grow our library.

Here is an interesting fact: Did you know that, on any given day, over 300 people come through the doors of Cambie library to borrow/return/renew items, to use the computers for research and printing, to study and do homework, or simply to relax and read, work on a puzzle, or do some colouring in our Relaxation Centre? Our top-ten books for the month of November are as follows: 1. Project 1065 by Alan Gratz 6. Just one Day by Gayle Forman

2. Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane by Suzanne Collins 7. Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

3. The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han 8. Plague by Michael Grant

4. Written in the Stars by Aisha Saeed 9. Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz

5. Beyond the kingdoms by Chris Colfer 10. Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

Also, the library recently purchased several new fiction titles. Come down anytime between 8:00 - 3:20 pm to check out these books and to have a look at our holiday display. This is a friendly reminder to check the overdue list which is posted at the front entrance of the library. Although we continue to use our email reminder system, a few students still have outstanding books.

Home-Ec News:

Pumpkin Buffet How do you use pumpkin as an ingredient? What skills, and tools and technologies are needed to prepare pumpkins? In what ways can we use local and seasonal ingredients in the food we make? These are some of the questions explored by Foods 9/10 classes this month as they prepared and participated in our class Pumpkin Buffet.

Here are some of our learnings: All parts of the pumpkin can be used! We used both the flesh and the seeds of the pumpkins. How and what does the process of preparing a whole fresh pumpkin look like? Students participated in this process as a class and in collaboration with other blocks of the same course. All pumpkins used were grown locally in Richmond. The possibilities of how pumpkin can be used as an ingredient are endless! Students made soup, cheesecakes, pasta, curries, drinks, cupcakes, muffins, pancakes, potatoes just to name a few dishes… They engaged in the design process and in design thinking to come up with these dishes as part of the new ADST curriculum.

Cambie Students Give the Gift of Life

On November 29th, a group of nine grade twelve students helped save lives. This brave group signed up to donate blood for the very first time! The students were transported by the CBS 'blood bus' to Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where the Canadian Blood Service clinic was set up. Each 488mL donation takes two days to be processed into three different components (red blood cells, platelets, and plasma). This actually means each donation can save up to three different lives! And it takes as little as three days after the donation for it to be used! In the end, only four of the students were eligible to donate on the day, but the support all of these students provided for each other was inspiring. Of course, the free juice and cookies at the end were great too. Starting a student-led legacy, this group of students will soon collaborate with a few of the clubs (Brothers Helping Others, Health Sciences, Grad Committee, Cambie Cares) in our school to promote a "Cambie Blood Drive" for late February. They will be looking for anyone in our community (students 17 or older, staff members, parents and family, etc.) to sign-up as donators doing so on behalf of Cambie Secondary. And if enough momentum gathers, this new tradition will continue year-to-year.

"It's In You To Give."

Senior Boys Soccer Team Returned to RSSAA League

After a few years of not fielding a Boys Soccer team, the Crusaders returned to the very competitive RSSAA league. With a mixture of experience, age (grade 8 to 12), and nationalities (Canada, Brazil and Spain), our boys played in some very tough games. Despite being on the losing side more often than not, the boys always gave their best effort and maintained their class.

The team included: Arun Mahal, Otho Parada, Ahmed Mohsin, Santiago Noranjo Romero, Satnam Godra, Ekbeer Singh, Thiago Rezende, Jake Lai, Arun Gill, Brett Cudo, Carlo Baltazar, Ayman Azzam, Audrei Ulit, Shareef El Alam, Leo Resende, and Wesam Shalabi (and managers Jersey Flores & Sukvir Dosanjh). Hopefully, the younger players will continue to play and return next September. On a related note, the hope is to also see Cambie return to the Senior Girls soccer league in the spring. Go Crusaders!

Sock Wars We are coming upon that time of year again ... Sock Wars!

During a two week period in December, Cambie staff and students will be collecting 'new' socks, ‘new’ underwear, gently used sweaters and/or money for the homeless that enter the Emergency Ward at St. Paul's Hospital, Covenant House (shelter for homeless youth), the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, and Kidsafe Vancouver (program for At Risk children on the downtown eastside of Vancouver). The staff members at these hospitals and non-profit organizations are so appreciative of Cambie’s giving spirit. So many homeless enter their doors wearing wet socks with holes… or no socks! This fundraising endeavour is our chance to ‘appreciate’ what we have; and give a little warmth and kindness in the form of a warm pair of socks, new underwear, and perhaps, a warm sweater to someone who could us it.

Our annual Sock Wars will be held December 5th -December 19th. The winning class in Block 2-4 is eligible for a pizza lunch. Our goal is to fundraise at least three pairs of socks from each student in our school. ($1.00 = 1 pair of socks). ** We will go out and buy them for you. H.J. Cambie’s First Responder Team, Health Science 12 class, Key Club, and Interact Club, will be joining together to spearhead this school event.

For the past eight years, Cambie Secondary has raised a considerable number of socks, underwear, and money. Last year alone, our total reached the equivalent of 1687 pairs of socks. Meteorologists are predicting that this winter will be a cold one. So we are asking for everyone at Cambie to give just ‘a little’ to those who are simply unable to meet their basic needs.

Remember Cambie:

Wear your brightest, most

outrageous socks on December 5th to kick off our annual ‘Sock Wars’.

Cambie Secondary Newsletter – Nov. 2017 Page 10

It’s November. We’ve already had a blast of winter (maybe not so much snow just yet, but it has been cold), and we are all getting our scarves and toques ready to go. But what is winter, really? We in Richmond barely know it compared to the rest of Canada. In fact, Canada is almost entirely winter. A History of Canada in Ten Maps by Adam Shoalts can tell you what winter is really all about. This isn’t your typical textbook history. No, 10 major milestones of mapping our country (before it was even founded, technically) are, ahem, mapped out here, each chapter devoted to an adventure or battle that laid out our future. Lots of mayhem and death here: Canada may not have been born from war like the United States, but there were plenty of battles and conflicts. There were wars between various First Nations, conflicts between the French and the English, skirmishes between Vikings and the people of Newfoundland… history being history, really. But maybe the biggest challenge was people against the North. Though the First Nations were better prepared for Canada’s long winters, it was really a challenge for all people to survive. Food was scarce, weather unpredictable, and only a lot of preparation could get you through winters that could last until May and June. Though many explorers cooperated closely with their First Nations guides, they were all travelling into the unknown. Explorers starved, froze, drowned, all manner of horrible things. A History of Canada in Ten Maps makes this clear, and worth a read. Steven is a Library Technician at the Cambie branch of the Richmond Public Library.

In case of snow, Richmond Schools will remain open, if at all possible. Any decision on a district wide closure will be made by 6:00 am, at the latest, and announced via CKNW AM 980 radio, News AM 1130 radio, CBC AM 690 radio, Fairchild AM 1470 radio, CHQM FM 103.5 radio, CBC television, Global television, CITY TV, CTV BC and the School District website (www.sd38.bc.ca). No announcement will be made saying that schools are open. Only closures will be announced.

REPORTING STUDENT ABSENCES Parents and guardians must contact the school office if a student is to be absent or late. Please include the student’s name, student number, grade, a contact phone number, reason for absence and length of absence in your message. Phone 604-668-6430. If you are moving or changing contact information, please ensure that you update the school office with the new address, phone number or email address. Thank you!
