Fellow Members, Since our founding in 1850, Germania Members have dedicated their efforts, working together as volunteers, to promote and preserve German heritage and traditions through song, dance, soccer, fostering family, friendship and most importantly Gemütlichkeit. Through ongoing local commitments, Germania of Poughkeepsie remains a distinguished organization within our community. Let’s continue to honor and appreciate the tremendous loyalty and generosity Members have exhibited throughout our rich past. As Members, we must continue to volunteer and work

together to keep our club going. Please don’t wait to be asked, rather embrace the initiative by asking ourselves first what we can do to help our club. Sign up to volunteer for a dinner, Biergarten, special event, and most importantly our festivals. Remain active by joining a committee and or sister club. When not volunteering, come out and attend meetings as well as functions. Germania needs as much support as we can get, and everyone is always welcome. Through this tireless volunteer spirit, Germania and our traditions have and will always remain strong. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as our President. Let’s all look forward to a fun, and most productive 2018! Looking forward to seeing you at Germania soon, Sincerely, Bill Reuter

GOOD & WELFARE AND SUNSHINE NEWS News from and about our members.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On behalf of my family, I would like to thank all the members that were involved in preparing the “Czech Republic” dinner in honor of Margarethe. It was heartwarming to have so many people come to honor Margarethe’s life at Germania. As you all know, Germania was a very important part of Margarethe’s life and she enjoyed being part of the Germania family and the friendships that developed. Thank you for the fellowship. I am also very pleased to learn that the proceeds from the 50/50 raffle were sent to the “Meals on Wheels of Greater Poughkeepsie.” Margarethe was an active participant and believed in the value of this work. Since Margarethe’s passing I have learned that several Germania Members made additional donations to Germania in Margarethe’s honor. Thank you for your generosity and I believe Margarethe would have been pleased with your generosity. Thank you all. Sincerely, Monica Jorgensen _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Our deepest sympathy to the Baumann family. RAYMOND BAUMANN, a local area resident for 44 years, formerly of Flushing, Queens, died suddenly on Sunday, December 31, 2017 at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. He was 75. Son of the late Harold J. and Ethel (Jamison) Baumann, he was born in Flushing on March 20, 1942. In 1960, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force immediately after graduating from High School. He was honorably discharged from active duty service in 1964 and went on to serve an additional two years as a Reservist. From 1968-1973, Raymond played semi-pro football for the Brooklyn Mariners. On September 12, 1970, he married Mary A. Sansone at St. Margaret of Cortona Church in the Bronx. In 1973, they relocated to Wappingers Falls, where they resided for 32 years until moving to the Town of Newburgh in 2005. Raymond worked for Con-Edison for almost 40 years. He retired in 2001 as Operating General Supervisor. He was a longtime member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and was affiliated with lodges in Great Neck, Poughkeepsie, and Wappingers Falls. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and belonged Monsignor Henry O' Carroll Council # 444 (New Windsor), as well as St. Mary Council # 4065 (Fishkill). Ray also belonged Germania of Poughkeepsie; he was a 10-year member. He was also an avid golfer. His wife, Mary, survives at home in Newburgh. Additional survivors include his daughter, Jean-Marie Bauman Kennedy & her husband Brian of Hopewell Junction; his grandchildren, Reyna Ariel, Riley Grace, and Reid Raymond; his brother-in-law, Fred Schurr of Pennsylvania; his sister-in-law, Barbara Baumann of Kenmore, NY; and many other relatives & friends. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our condolences to the Seitz-Mund family. ANNELIESE SEITZ-MUND, 58, of Isle of Hope, Savannah, passed away on January 9, 2018, surrounded by her husband, Doug of 37 years, her daughter Hillary, and son Christian by her side. Anneliese was diagnosed

with a rare leomyosarcoma in March of 2017 and since then she and her family had been aggressively fighting. She was a strong, but gentle woman who would do anything for anyone in order to help. Anneliese was born in Poughkeepsie New York, and graduated from Poughkeepsie High School where she and first Doug met. She went on to attend Russell Sage College and, later in life, Cambridge College, completing her Masters degree in Education. Anneliese and Doug were married in Poughkeepsie, they moved to Massachusetts soon after where they made their home for 35 years. Groveland, MA is where they found happiness in family, friends and community. Throughout her time in Poughkeepsie, she was active in Germania where she could always be found dancing and singing; she was a member for 40 years. Anneliese carried her ancestor’s heritage, speaking fluent German, and her family would frequently travel to Germany together. She was always easy to talk with, always had a smile and was always wanting to meet everyone. She was active in the community participating in Daisy and Girl Scouts, Groveland Congregational Church fairs, and Sunday school. Anneliese was an expert sewer and could often be found sewing, mending, altering and adjusting dance costumes for

Hillary and anyone that needed help at the dance studio. She traveled with the USA Tap Team to Reisa, Germany, and organized trips, translated and patiently helped guide the group through one of her favorite countries. She was always at the forefront of organizing activities around Christian’s rowing career, pulling together families to help with food at regattas. She was also extremely active and involved within the hemophilia community, helping in organizing gatherings for the New England Hemophilia Association, and gained the nickname ‘Hemo-Mama’ for it. She and Doug frequently volunteered at the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, a camp for children with chronic illnesses. The “sandcastle group” is a group of friends who have kept together since childhood, getting together several times a year to enjoy each other’s company, often having wonderful fire pit parties. They became the “sandcastle group” after competing in the Crane Beach sandcastle competition in the early 80’s. Anneliese was an active member of the White Mountain Ski Runners, a skiing and hiking club in the White Mountains of NH, where she became the first woman President in the club’s long history. Anneliese worked in finance once she and Doug moved to Massachusetts and left the industry once Hillary arrived. With her “second career”, she began teaching first at the Bagnall School, and then as a special education teacher for Pentucket Middle School. She loved what she did and all who she helped. She put all of herself into each child’s needs and would often bring out the very best in each of her students. She retired in 2016, and moved to Savannah with Doug and their dog Oakley. A celebration of her life was held in Massachusetts and burial in Poughkeepsie, NY. Donations in her name may be made to the New England Hemophilia Association and to the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp (Ashford, Connecticut). _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our warmest get well wishes to the following members: John Jorgensen had hip replacement on January 15th; Donna Mears fell on her elbow and had surgery on January 11th; Rudy Dehnert is fighting infections and is in and out of the hospital and suffers from dementia; Lore Schoenfeld was recently hospitalized for heart related issues; Anneliese Krieg continues to do physical therapy to help her shoulder mobility; Joe Manz has heart related issues; Susie Greinacher is recovering from an accident when a big branch fell on her while she was doing some work around her property; James Charkalis is recovering after his open heart surgery and continues with cardiac exercises; Mitch Greene had open heart surgery in December; he is recovering well and is in good spirits; Lisa McVey has been undergoing chemo and radiation treatments; Otto Klassen recently had a stroke; Klaus Greinacher fell in his home and is presently at the Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie; Alex Jombach, and new member John Mueller are still undergoing cancer treatments; Bill Reuter is recovering at home from a heart stent procedure.

Do you enjoy attending our parties, dinners, Biergartens, lunches and special events? Do you rely on Germania being available for practices and rehearsals?

Do you like dropping by for a drink at your club bar? Do you enjoy our German classes and dance classes? Did you find friendship or love at Germania?

Notes from the Germania Singers The Germania Singers wish everyone a Happy New Year! Singing rehearsals, conducted by George Calabrese, resumed on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 7:30PM. At the Membership Dinner on January 20th, the Singers sang the memorial song "Still Ruht Dein Herz" to remember members who passed away in the past year.

We will perform at the Heritage Day event at the Galleria Mall on February 17th. Our next event will be the Good Friday (Karfreitag) Service at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mill St., Poughkeepsie, on March 30. This is a beautiful German Language Service. We welcome all for evenings of song and "Gemutlichkeit!" on Monday evenings. If you have any questions, please contact: Helga Nowak-Razey (845-797-7519), or George or Liz Calabrese (845-242-2769), or email us at [email protected].

All the sister clubs were represented in this solemn German language celebration of the coming Christmas. The Germania chore gave a wonderful rendition of the German Christmas carols. To highlight the celebration the Calabrese Violin Duo played the magnificent J.S.BACH’s Wachet auf. A real old fashion Gemütlichkeit reception followed in the church basement. It was spiritually filled celebration for many of us as we prepared for the Christian’s most important holiday. It certainly was a great diversion for most of us from the maddeningly crowded shopping malls.

Germania Almrausch Schuhplattler Verein Happy New Year to you all. I hope this message finds you happy and in good health. I want to take this opportunity to thank the members of our Verein and Kindergruppe families for a very successful 2017, and the members of Germania who support us. For me, there were several high points last year: First of all, there was the Jugend Einzel Competition at United German Hungarians back in March 2017, where our own members Sabine Doedee and Jarrett Kuklis came in first and fourth respectively. The next high point for me was in July, when Almrausch attended the Gaufest in Buffalo, NY. I was very impressed with the size of our group: We had 26 members (including family members) attending. Personally, I'm proud of having been able, together with Beverly, to participate in the Einzel Competition. And, speaking of Einzel Competition, my daughter Sabine Doedee came in third in her age category. This, of course, means that she now gets the compete in the "Bayerischer Loewe" dance competition in Haldenwang, Germany. This event will take place on June 2, 2018. Then, of course, there were our performances during 2017: Galleria Mall, Maifest, Oktoberfest, Hunter, Tymor Park, Barryville, Kingston, and a performance at the Renaissance Nursing Home. What impressed me most of all was that 2017 was the year in which our Junior members stepped up to the plate. Without their efforts, we would not have been able to pull off our engagements, and I want to say thank you to all Junior members (and their parents) for this effort. So, now we are in 2018. Our first rehearsal for this year was held on Friday, Jan 26 and we are preparing for a new dance season including Germania's festivals. In addition to our regular rehearsals, we are holding some special rehearsals to prepare for the next Jugend Einzel competition which will be held on Sat, March 3, 2018 at the Alpenrose Schuhplattlers, in Lancaster, PA. We have a few young dancers participating this year, which is very exciting. In closing, I just want to say I look forward to seeing you all throughout this year. Sincerely, GJ Doedee, Vorplattler, Germania Almrausch SV If you would like to learn Bavarian dancing we welcome you to join us! We look forward to seeing you at any of our upcoming rehearsals: Feb 23, Mar 9, Mar 16, Mar 23, Apr 20 and Apr 27. Kindergruppe 7:30pm, adults

and juniors 8:30pm. You may contact us at [email protected], or call our Vorstand, Karen Rose at (914)489-8344. Like us on Facebook @GermaniaAlmrauschSV

Bartenders Wanted! Please consider joining our bartending team to cover regular club hours, club events and hall rentals on a shared, rotating schedule. We will train you! This is a great way to meet new friends and experience a variety

Membership Dinner 2018 - Page A

Germania hosted its 168th Membership Dinner on Saturday, January 20th, 2018. Over a hundred members and guests attended the event which honored Life Member (50 years) FRED ZIPPRICH, and Honorary Members (25 years) GERHARD STOETZEL and MOMIR GUZIJIAN. Biographies for each of the honorees were read, which not only gave us a look into their personal lives but commemorated their dedication as long time members of Germania.

Our club's Executive Board and Trustees as well as the Presidents of Germania's daughter clubs were introduced to the members. Germania's president, Bill Reuter congratulated the honorees and thanked the volunteers and everyone who support the club by attending our many events throughout the year. He encouraged all members to work together, participate and volunteer wherever possible. Leading the toast was Honorary President Janett Frank.

Pictured: Germania's Board: Karl Brill, Joe Ulrich, Sue Koppenhaver, Georgia Herring-Trott, Gary Schonmann, Dave Yearack, Helga Razey, Bill & Sylvia Reuter, Karen Rose, Mike Reichert and Robb Rose. (Not present: Liz Calabrese, Peter Licis). Pictured below: Fr. Lutz, and the Germania Singers (Helmut, Helga, Janett, Helga, Renate, Rosemarie and Pat) with bar chair Sue, and soccer player Joe. Fr. Thomas Lutz, full-time Chaplain and faculty member to Our Lady of Lourdes High School, led everyone in prayer. Germania's beloved members who passed away in the past year were remembered in a special way. The Germania Singers sang "Still Ruht Dein Herz" as their names were read. Once again, the volunteers did a great job setting up the hall, ironing linens, printing programs, cooking, baking, making appetizers, dishwashing, plating, serving, bartending, selling raffle tickets, etc. Many of our members and guests even helped to clean up the tables after the event. It was a heartwarming sight to see! A big part of the success of this event was due to the extraordinary work of the volunteers. Thank you for your hard work, patience, flexibility, support and attentiveness. Words cannot convey our gratitude for your tremendous contribution.

The key to our success rests in people like you, who embody the spirit of greatness by saying:

"Yes I can, and you can, too!" - MyThankYouSite.com At the dinner, Sylvia thanked the following people. "I hope I remembered everyone."
