BE THE REASON SOMEONE SMILES

WELLBEING @ BOSCO

Assistant Principal | Mr Peter Halpin

Q: Did you always plan to be a teacher? If not, what were you considering as a career?Joshua: Yes. I was always a good public speaker at school. I had a knack for English and Geography. I have about 8 teachers in my extended family, so it was a pretty obvious path. My dad always got about 4 days holiday over Christmas - he’s in finance. So naturally, I thought, stuff that! I’ll be at the beach for 6 weeks at Christmas. And here I am.

Q: What is the best holiday that you have been on? Why was it so good?Joshua: Well, I’ve been on so many! It’s hard to choose. Most exciting? Most fun? Most challenging? I guess I will say my holiday to Morocco in 2017. For many people, Africa seems a far and away land, inaccessible to us westerners. For me and my wife, we decided we wanted to push the comfort zone and so we made a trip to South Africa and Morocco.

In Morocco we visited the UNESCO listed city Fez, walled-in and enclosed by Berber-built fortifications from the time of Jesus. We had some hairy counters in Morocco, including having one of our Canadian friends who we met in Marrakech get robbed at the end of a machete right after we’d walked into our hotel.

On the positive side, my wife and I (partner at the time) then went into the Saharan desert for a few days. While there, we climbed one of the highest sand dunes in the Sahara and drank wine as the sun set. That’s where I proposed to her.

A great trip.

Q: What is your favourite way to spend your spare time?Joshua: Probably taking my dog for a walk and training him. He’s a beautiful Hungarian Vizsla with an IQ of 189. He could get into Mensa if he wanted to.

Q: What are the top three things on your bucket list?Joshua: Take my daughter overseas to hike somewhere amazing with her parents. We love hiking. I’d love to visit K2 in the Himalayas.

Move to acreage and get some goats. I love goats. They are amazing animals and I’ve always wanted one.

Buy a fast car in my mid-life crisis.

3 TERM 4 - WEEK 7 GAUDIUM ET SPES | JOY & HOPE | A school that prepares for life

Q: What is the best dish that you can cook?Joshua: Like a lot of men, I’m fairly handy in the kitchen. I stick to the staples: Spaghetti Bolognese is probably my best. I make a secret recipe that you won’t find online. If you want the recipe, hit me up.

Q: Favourite band/concert? Why?Joshua: Rage Against the Machine. A classic 90s hard rock band as I grew through my formative years. I saw them in 2008 in Sydney when they came together again after nearly 10 years being broken up. It was amazing.

Q: Favourite author/book?Joshua: S Craig Zahler. He’s an American author who writes Westerns and Horrors. He’s a guilty pleasure. He’s also a filmmaker, famous for his movie Bone Tomahawk starring Kurt Russel. Not for the faint of heart.

Q: Favourite film? Why?Joshua: Leon: The Professional. It’s got Gary Oldman, Jean Reno, and my favourite actress in her film debut, Natalie Portman.

Q: The three living people with whom you would most like to have a meal? WhyJoshua: David Attenborough. His love of the earth and nature is inspiring to me. His knowledge is just so impressive.John Cleese. Monty Python, anyone? “This bird isn’t sleeping. He’s stone dead!”Sacha Baron Cohen. He is hilarious and I watched him when I was young and still love his knack for satire.

Q: The three deceased people with whom you would most like to have a meal? Why?Joshua: Genghis Khan. Conquered the entire world with some horses and arrows.Miriam Rothschild. Fascinating. No formal education but was one of the most prolific taxonomists in the history of humanity. Steve Irwin. Speaks for himself.

Q: What do you consider your greatest achievement?Joshua: Helping my wife to bring into the world the most beautiful daughter a dad could ask for.

Q: If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?Joshua: Probably to stop the consumption of fossil fuels. With the fires we had here last year, the world’s only suffering more and more from our abuse of the environment. I’d bring back the wild, untouched forests ... there’s not much left anymore.

Q: If you were down to your last $10, how would you spend it?Joshua: $10 scratchie. ‘Live the life’.

Q: Describe what happened with your most epic fail.Joshua: Rookie dad... changed my daughter’s nappy while sleep-deprived in bed (and shirtless). She needed to do a number two. You can imagine what happened next.

Q: If you had to change your name, what new name would you select? Why?Joshua: Easy- I am changing my name! I’m taking my wife’s name. I’ll be Mr Lawrence from next year. Why? Why not? Plenty of women have done it before me. It’s about time a man did it.

Q: What is the most courageous thing that you've ever done?Joshua: When I was at uni, I was getting off a bus when I saw some transit officers harassing a pensioner who didn’t have a ticket but she assured them she had one, but must’ve misplaced it. Three grown men harassing an 80 year old, 5-foot woman. I had my ticket. So I ran. Fast. Their natural reaction to catch a ticket-hopper made them chase me immediately, leaving the lady alone. When I was about 100m away, I stopped running and showed them my ticket. They were not happy. I went along my merry way, and so did she.

Q: If you could go back in time, what major event would you visit?Joshua: Dinosaurs. 100% dinosaurs. “We’re gonna build a park.”

Q: What fictional character would you choose to meet if possible? Why?Joshua: Homer Simpson. To eat some donuts with him.

Q: If you had a motto for life, what would it be?Joshua: Be good, and be good at it.

Congratulations to Lulani McGowen whose HSC Body of work ‘Reflecting the Depth of my Fantasy’ has been selected for inclusion in the Art Rules 2020 exhibition at Hazelhurst Art Centre. Lulani has worked incredibly hard throughout the course developing and refining her digital artwork. Standing at 1.9 metres high and printed on vinyl applied to perspex, the level of detail she has achieved is remarkable.

Due to Covid restrictions, there will be no physical opening event for Art Rules 2020. Instead, the speeches and award ceremony will be filmed and shared online. If you would like to see her work in person, Lulani's artwork will be displayed from Saturday 19 December 2020 – Sunday 17 January 2021 in the Broadhurst Gallery at Hazelhurst Arts Centre.

We are so proud of Lulani's achievement and couldn't be happier for her.

A number of the Year 7 Technology Classes have recently completed their textile ‘Goodie Bag’. The students used the sewing machines to create hems, handles and seams in the bags. They decorated their bags with a variety of techniques such as tie-dying, marbling, pockets, applique and embroidery. There are some great designs.

Great work!

TAS Department | Mrs Melinda Wagner

Year 10 Food Technology students have successfully completed their final task in hosting the much anticipated High Tea for staff. The concluding topic for the course- Food Trends- allowed for students to experience their own high tea as an incursion this year, rather than attending a Sydney restaurant. This gave students the knowledge and confidence to design a menu and host their own High Tea lunch at the College. The event sold out incredibly quickly and was thoroughly appreciated by all who attended. The feedback on the service and delicious sweet and savoury items was very positive. Well done Year 10 Food Technology students on a great event.

Cafe Experience & Coffee Training IncursionOn Monday 23 November Year 11 Hospitality students spent the afternoon participating in a holistic cafe experience. Firstly we visited one of Engadine’s award-winning cafes “The Local Pantry” followed by an Incursion where students learned about the coffee-making process, gained knowledge on equipment and prepared coffee within a commercial time frame. This was a wonderful opportunity for Bosco students to be trained one on one with an experienced Barista. We thank ex-student Finn Walsh, an employee of Steam Brothers, for this opportunity and taking time out to help train our students.

'During period four today we walked to The Local Pantry for some lunch and so we could see how the front of the house is run. I think I can say we all thoroughly enjoyed this experience. Following that, we came back and participated in our coffee training session that was run by Steam Brothers Engadine. We were trained and shown how to make a variety of coffees. During period 6, we were all assessed and had a turn making our own coffee with our own unique latte art design. This was a fantastic experience for us all.' Lara Prugovecki

'Today we spent lunchtime and the remainder of the day making coffees in the hospitality kitchen and enjoying a nice lunch as a class. We walked up to The Local Pantry in Engadine and had a lovely lunch with the class looking at all the different kitchen and coffee making appliances. We then walked back to school, and Finn Walsh from Steam Brothers came and taught us how to make coffee using the machines at school. It was so fun and very interesting, learning all the different techniques and steps to make a great coffee.' Kaylah Gibson

'Finn Walsh from Steam Brothers came to teach us about coffee making today! We got a run-through on all the coffee equipment and terms and eventually got to make yourself one. It was delicious with the limited appliances we had. Thanks, Finn! I learnt a lot, and it helped me for future assessments/catering days.' Abbey Bishop

Well done to all students - you have created beautiful flower arrangements.

A huge thank you to Ms Helen Coles who sourced the materials and continually went above and beyond to support the TAS department with new and creative projects as well as purchasing high-quality resources.

'Over the last two weeks, our Year 9 Textiles Class have been designing and creating dried flower arrangements. This is currently a very popular trend. We started by researching and designing arrangements and then putting them together at school. A range of beautiful dried flowers was provided for us as well as some students having a go at drying them themselves and adding them into their arrangements. It was a great experience and super fun to make, and overall I really enjoyed the process!'

Year 9 Timber classes are currently working on constructing a timber mallet and a paper towel holder. They will be learning the parts of the lathe and different types of lathe tools that can be used to create shapes and detail. Students will gain an understanding of tolerance when turning the diameter and using calipers. Finally, they will see the importance of ergonomics and the functionality of tools.

YEAR 9 TIMBER

Well done!

This semester Year 8 have enjoyed the practical experiences in Technology Mandatory. Throughout the semester, the classes have studied Digital Technologies and Engineering Systems Context Areas.

In the Digital Technologies Unit, students learnt Python, Block and Binary coding. They have been using Python coding to design and create a function or game for their Microbit. In the Engineering Systems Unit, classes have been designing and constructing timber phone amplifiers to improve the volume of their phone. They have learnt how to use SketchUp to prototype

their designs and used a range of hand/machine tools to build their project.

These are some samples of their great work. Well done Year 8!

WHO AND THAT

Literacy and Numeracy | Mrs Peta Batty

Many people think that who is always used when referring to people and that is used for things. The following article from Online Grammar by Mary Morel considers the historical use of these words.

I have always thought that we should use who for people and that for things. I knew there were exceptions, such as if you were talking about a group of people.

Tradespeople that don’t turn up on time are infuriating.

But doing some further research, I had my golden rule busted. Apparently, many writers have been using who and that interchangeably since Chaucer’s days.

The American Heritage Dictionary says:

‘There is a widespread belief, sometimes taught as correct usage, that only who and not that should be used to introduce a restrictive relative clause identifying a person. But that has been used in this way for centuries, going back to the Old English period, and has been used by the finest writers in English, as in "The man that once did sell the lion's skin / While the beast liv'd, was kill'd with hunting him" (Shakespeare) and "Scatter thou the people that delight in war" (King James Bible). In contemporary usage, who predominates in such contexts, but that is used with sufficient frequency to be considered standard, as in "The atoms in a diamond ... outnumber all the people that have ever lived or ever will"(Richard Dawkins). That also occurs idiomatically in reference to groups (where who would sound peculiar), as in "[She] had two sons, and settled into raising a family that soon included twin daughters" (David Freeman).’
