The National Guildhall Music Visit On Friday 8 th May, we listened to a performance from a Wind Quintet from the Guildhall school of music. The Quintet was made up of an oboe, a flute, a clarinet, a French horn and a bassoon. At first, each of the musicians showcased their instruments and asked us to name them. I think they were quite amused when quite a lot of the students thought the French horn was a trumpet :). They played a variety of pieces, mostly from the 20 th century period, including some pieces by Malcolm Arnold. Most of the music was in a major key, therefore quite lively and cheerful. The proficiency of the players was very impressive to listen to, especially as they didn’t have a conductor. The tone they made was also very pleasurable to listen to with the delicate flute on top, the piercing oboe in the middle with the mellow clarinet, the deep bassoon and bright French horn strengthening the sound underneath. I think this visit was very inspirational and enjoyable to all of us and it was very nice to be able to see and hear a variety of different instruments. can watch our films if you go to ‘Unit’ on the website. (FW) Role-play clothes for the Unit We are trying to collect as many clothes as we can for drama activities so if anyone has any old-fashioned or unusual children’s clothes that they no longer need, we would be very grateful for any donations e.g. hats of all kinds, waistcoats, pinafores, smart jackets, small bags, scarves, etc. We will keep a box in the unit. Thank you very much . (FW)

5SB's Poetry Quest has begun! 5SB are fortunate enough to have been chosen, along with 3 other schools, to spend time working in school with a professional performance poet - Luke Wright. We are going to be exploring how we can use spoken language and performance techniques of our own. We will have 3 workshops, where Luke is coming into school to work with us to create our own poem. We are going to be performing this on stage at The Playhouse in Norwich in June. Luke came in to work with us this week and we had a fantastic, creative and very entertaining morning!

Sports Morning

We look forward to seeing parents at sports morning which is scheduled for the morning of Wednesday June 10th (if weather is dry) starting at 9am. The reserve date is Monday 15th June should this be necessary.

General Election

On Thursday 7th May, while the nation was busy voting in the General Election, CJS held its own mock election. All children were invited to vote for their favourite party and the turnout was fantastic! Year 5 pupils played a central role in organising and running the event from designing the ballot papers to manning the polling booths. It was wonderful to see how positively so many children responded to the election; researching the manifestos of each party and thinking seriously about their own political beliefs. A candidate was selected to represent each of the major parties and the winner, by some margin, was the Green Party. Feedback from the pupils was that they really enjoyed the opportunity; I think we have a number of budding Politicians in our midst! Mrs Brewster.

School Council Sponsored Dress Up Day The School Council has organized an endangered animal day which will take place on Friday 12th of June 2015 (WWF day). You are allowed to dress up as any animal and bring in £1. Donations will go to the World Wildlife Fund conservation work. You are allowed face paint but you can’t bring in a toy. So get choosing! Race For Life 2015

On Saturday 16th May several Colman staff went to the Norwich Race For Life and either, ran, jogged or walked the 5KM. Altogether, Team Colman has raised over £700 for Cancer Research UK, and several achieved personal best times. A fantastic afternoon! Miss Cole

Your Voice Matters Thank you to all the families who completed our Healthwatch Survey and told us what you think about health and social care services in your area. Your Voice Matters and we will feed back your comments to those who make decisions about health and social care provision in your area. Key findings from the survey will be available for you to access on our website later this year. If you did not get the opportunity to share your experiences of health and social care services in your area please email [email protected]. We guarantee your anonymity. Congratulations to Fahmida Hussain who has won the “what makes a child happy and healthy poster” competition. We look forward to finding out even more about what young people think about health in June 2015 with the help of the MoMo theatre and their healthy eating show. Swimming Donations Please remember to donate any unwanted swimming costumes, trunks, hats, arm bands or inflatable

rings. All will be gratefully accepted. Please leave at the school office clearly marked for ‘swimming pool’. Miss Cole.

Korfball Clubs All Korfball clubs will restart straight after the half term holiday: Year 5 and 6 will resume on Monday 1st

June, with the last club session on Monday 8th June. Year 4 Korfball club will have their last club session on Wednesday 3rd June, with a match planned for Tuesday 9th June. Korfball Clubs have been lots of fun and very popular. I have arranged friendly games for early June, please look out for the letters and return as soon as possible. The Schools Summer Korfball Tournament will be on Friday 19th June and this is always the finish of Korfball for the year. All clubs will restart again in September. Miss Cole.

Year 5 & 6 Teaching

As many of you will know, in Year 6 we teach English and maths in three classes rather than two, with Mrs. Davis taking the third class. This has worked extremely well over the last two years and the children have really benefited from smaller class sizes, as well as more targeted support. We will be continuing this three class structure in English and Maths again next year in Year 6, but in order to give our Year 5 children a flying start to their final year, we will be starting it earlier. After half-term, Year 6 will be going back to two ability-grouped maths sets and to their base classes for English. Year 5 children will be working in one of three classes in English and Maths, with the third group led by Mrs. Davis. Your child will have been informed which group they will be working in after half term and these will be the same classes they will work in for English and maths in Year 6. If you have any queries about this, please speak to your child’s class teacher who will be happy to help.

Attendance From September 2015, the Department for Education is changing the level at which pupil absence is classed as persistent absence. This means that from September 2015, any attendance of 90% or below will be classed as

Page 4: Newsletter May 2015 - Colman Junior School · enquiries@healthwatchnorfolk.co.uk. We guarantee your anonymity. Congratulations to Fahmida Hussain who has won the “what makes a child

persistent absence. Until the end of this term, the level will remain at 85% or less.

Absence Please leave any pupil absence messages on the dedicated absence phone line 01603 508530 (Option 1) as early as possible on the first day of absence. If we are not able to identify the reason for absence within one week, we are obliged to record the absence as unauthorised, so please make sure to contact us as soon as possible.

Sunhats and Sandals We have had a number of queries about the shoes children can wear to school now that the weather is warmer. Children are able to wear

sandals to school, but in the interests of safety these must have flat soles, closed toes and closed heels. Socks must also be worn at all times. There is very little shade on our school site and on very sunny days, children will need to bring a hat to school for use at breaktimes and lunchtimes. JS
