Volunteers and Bakers are needed! Please call Fran Garbaccio at 626-355- 6536 for more information on how you can help. Proceeds from the Art Fair benefit the Sierra Madre Public Library. For more information please call 626-355-7186 or visit our website www. sierramadrelibraryfriends.com. See you May 2 and 3!! President’s Message Board Members of the Friends will be meeting on Saturday, May 9, for a Retreat/ Workshop for future planning. Margaret Quigley, Board Development Chair, has a full working agenda planned and we’ll be working hard on studying our finances and planning our budget in the time of city budget restraints for our Sierra Madre Public Library. Your President was invited to join the group of structural engineers and archi- tects who will be participating in the RFP process for the assessment of the exist- ing Library structure and the feasibility of potential expansion. Following a brief history of the Library building itself, plus a rundown of what the project will en- tail, the group made a tour of the Library building. It is hoped that the project will enable the Library to upgrade the build- ing’s electrical, plumbing and structure as well as expand to give us a community room plus a Friends area. Martha Troedson reported that the April Best Used Book Sale was a great suc- cess. Combined with the early sales from the Library book truck, plus Amazon sales, there was a grand total of $3,271.88. This represents many hours of hard work for Martha and all the Friends volunteers who come out several days of the week prior to the sale to help sort and categorize the books. Thanks to all! The Nominating Committee has been hard at work and is close to completing the Board Membership for next year. The Annual Meeting and Volunteer Rec- ognition is scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, when the Board for 2015-2016 will be installed and volunteers recog- nized. We will again meet at the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church where we welcome all of you to enjoy the eve- ning. The Committee still has a few open- ings for Board members, so if you are in- terested in serving, please let us know. Pat Alcorn

LIBRARYS PARENT/CHILD WORKSHOP Sierra Madre Public Librarys latest five-week Parent/Child Workshop in March featured noted resource professionals from the community. Each fun-filled session focused on a different aspect of parenting, including early literacy, speech, hearing and language development, child development, nutrition, music, play, and health. Interactive sessions allowed parents to spend time having fun with their young children, developing a network of other parents, and interacting with specialists on child development. In the Woodsby Tana French

The Sierra Madre Library has had, in the past, an adult mystery reading program, and so I wanted to read this tense page turner from a talented voice and relatively new mystery author. One summer day in the 1980s on the outskirts of Dublin, three children disappear into the woods. Although one is found, what has happened to the other two? Fast forward to the present day and Detective Rob Ryan is called upon to investigate a child who is found placed on an ancient burial stone. Are the two cases connected in any way? Reader, you will not fi nd this out until the end, and I believe a few things are left unanswered for a sequel. Some authors are good story tellers but not such great writers (Dan Brown, John Grisham) however some are blessed with both talents. The latter is the case with Ms. French who is an outstanding writer, descriptive, without being over the top and weaves an intriguing story as well. With taut pacing and the right amount of suspense, psychological character studies (including some pretty creepy families), and interesting subplots within the police departments investigation, I enjoyed escaping for a while with this who-done-it. (Ill never tell!). CALL # STATUS: In the Mysteries Section
