Dear Friends,Lent is upon us! This important season of the Christian year is a time for us to prepare for the joy of Easter. It is also a time to reflect and take stock of the ways God wants us to live as individuals and as a people – even as nations of peoples. If you are like me, I know there is much room for growth for me to become more aligned with God’s will and a closer follower of Jesus.
How about you? Can you improve? Do you want to?
Lent starts on Ash Wednesday, March 6th. We will have a reflective worship service at 7 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, and ashes will be imposed on those who wish during the service. At this worship service we are reminded of our mortality and that “from dust we came; unto dust we will return.”
Another way to help you on your journey of faith is to commit to daily bible reading, prayer, and reflection. We have copies of the 2019 Lenten devotional published by Presbyterians Today. It just so happens to be written by a good friend of mine from our days in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Rev. Krin Van Tatenhove. Here’s Presbyterian Today’s description of this resource:
“This year’s stunning devotional invites us on a spiritual and visual pilgrimage through the holy season of Lent . . . through the final days of our Lord’s ministry . . . his passion . . . his death on the cross . . . and finally his glorious resurrection at Easter.
“Relying on the powerful words of the Psalms, we peer at the heartbreaking ravages of the world through Jesus’ eyes: poverty, racism, sexism, corruption, violence and so many other social ills that afflict God’s beloved children. For those of us intent on bending the arc of history toward justice, it might be tempting to become agitated and exhausted. But with God, there is always hope.
“So, through magnificent photography and a spiritual discipline called visio divina — praying with art — we open our eyes with new awareness and gratitude for the beauty of creation. The devotional offers a dazzling smorgasbord of soul-stirring original photographs, each with a short, guided meditation to lift our hearts and fortify us for the rest of our Lenten journey. The text, meditations and original photography are all the loving work of the Rev. Krin Van Tatenhove, long-time Presbyterian pastor, hospice chaplain, substance abuse counselor, traveler, photographer, and amazing storyteller.”
If you’d like a copy, please call the church office at 745-7067 and ask Emily or Betty to reserve one for you — or see me on Sundays. The cost is $3.00 each. Those who want to can meet with me for a bag lunch weekly Tuesday at noon discussion of our reading and reflection during Lent!
See you on the Journey!

Only 30 days until Spring! Hallelujah! It is the end of winter, maple sugaring season—cold nights and days above freezing. We’ll March right into the month and enjoy the changing of the lion to the lamb, love and maple syrup that go together like the sticky winds of winter. We began 2019 with some adversity; cancelling the Scone Bake Sale because of a serious snow storm that caused Sunday services to be cancelled.
The Winter Valentine’s Banquet was a fun evening…a real ‘hoot’, thanks to the owls provided by Wild Kritters. Pot Luck food is always excellent and God’s fellowship was in abundance. We hope you had a good time.
The 2019-2020 schedule is published in a new tri-fold brochure. Pick up a copy and find an event you’ll join in on.
March 9 is a Gathering in the Tower Lounge at 10 AM. We will again participate in the Migrant Worker Kit collection for Church Women United. The necessary items are as follows: a large bath towel and washcloth; body deodorant soap; toothpaste and toothbrush, a new comb. Look for the bag distribution any time now! We’ll collect those until the end of April.
Speaking of April, it Rummage Sale time on 4/13 and 14. We’ve encouraged you to casually begin cleaning out the old stuff and making room for the new. It’s time to get serious! If you haven’t used or worn something in 3 years, give it to the Rummage Sale. Simplify your life, get rid of the clutter. Everything we have was a gift from the Lord, and now maybe He wants someone else to have it! The only thing is, you can’t bring it to church until the week before the sale. Volunteer with Ann Winter for set-up and sale help, or with me in the Kitchen lunch prep and service. If anyone wants to make a batch of soup for the lunch, let me know!
Thanks for you time. See you in church. Blessings to you,
Peggy Nash, Moderator
If you haven’t done so already please share

Come and see the beautiful new stained-glass windows in our church lobby!
As one of our congregation’s projects associated with Pastor Rex Stewart’s 2017 sabbatical exploring the relationship between faith and creativity, these six panels lovingly created by members of our church, depict theological symbols of the church: a ship, a
lighthouse, an anchor, a loaf of bread with stalks of wheat, a Celtic symbol of the Trinity, and a cluster of grapes on
a vine! They are each spectacular, and we can’t thank those who had a hand in designing and constructing them
enough! They are: Mark and Diane Johnson, Stephen Johnson, Peggy Nash, Debbie Coutts, Carol J Rogers,
Barbara Rodgers, Gail McCalister, and, Beth and Cami McCalister—all under the tutelage of
Suzanne Todaro, owner of the Gleam & Glimmer Stained Glass Studio in North Tonawanda.
We will hold a dedication ceremony for them after the 10:45 a.m. worship on Palm Sunday, April 14th.

March Youth and Children’s MinistriesDirector: Michelle Allen
I feel ‘blocked’ as I try to write today. Perhaps it is the long, harsh winter with its cold, gray days. Or maybe it is the constant barrage of negativity in the news and social media. The anguish I feel for close friends who are hurting contributes too. I need a balm today, and so does the world, I think. The Good News is that Jesus’ life and message ARE the balm for our suffering, both individual and communal. Jesus reminds us that God IS here- in us, in our neighbors, in our pain, in our universe. On days when everything seems difficult, all I can do is breathe in and know I’m breathing the breath of God. In fact, in Hebrew and Greek one word means breath, wind, and spirit. Are not these three the essence of life? So I invite you to breathe with me, my friends. We are spiritual beings and we share the air. Let’s consciously feel it and let it fill us. And when we all share one breath together, when this very essence vibrates in unity throughout the world, then we will know the kingdom of heaven.
Grace and peace,Michelle

Lesley Hazelton: “The Doubt Essential to Faith”When Lesley Hazleton was writing a biography of Muhammad, she was struck by something: The night he received the revelation of the Koran, according to early accounts, his first reaction was doubt, awe, even fear. And yet this experience became the bedrock of his belief. Hazleton calls for a new appreciation of doubt and questioning as the foundation of faith -- and an end to fundamentalism of all kinds.

This is a support group for people suffering from bereavement will be offered at First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown, 100 Church Street. The group meets every Thursday at 1:30 pm.
The group is led by Sister Colleen Shanahan from Stella Niagara. She says that the group is based on Kubler-Ross’s “Five Stages of Death and Dying” and how that effects us physically, spiritually, mentally, and socially. Everything at the meetings is confidential. We believe that healing comes in these sessions through (1) verbally expressing your own version of grief and (2) the support you find from others’ experience.
This is an ecumenical group, open to all people.
