Pensions are a quite complex matter about which employers, labor unions, pension fund’s boards, employees and pensioners have different opinions. Almost daily media report about pensions and concepts such as funding level, indexation, cuts and returns. “It should be a bit less complicated”, says Ellen Kuppens, responsible for HR in the Netherlands. Jo Schuffelen, process operator DEP, doesn’t want to end up penniless when he retires. “You have to watch over an enormous pile of money”, says Monique van Heeswijk, PDN board member. There is one common starting point: everybody wants decent pension benefits for all members. Not only now, but also in the future. AFM/DNB investigation

AFM and DNB recently conducted a sector-wide investigation ‘Financiëleopzet en informatie’ [Financial plan and information]. The result of thisinvestigation is that AFM and DNB believe that PDN has given itsmembers ‘clear information and accurate expectations’ about ‘indexation’and ‘cuts’.

“Fresh eyes give a new perspective”

The financial position of pension funds has been under pressure forseveral years and that isn’t making it any easier to manage them. Thesuitability requirements for pension fund board members are becomingever stricter. A number of supervisors keep an eye on the fund’soperations. There is amongst others a Supervisory Board, which is acommittee of three experts, who are not members or pensioners of PDN.Wendy de Jong tells about the work of that Supervisory Board.
