Dear Parents and Carers March 2012 So as we rush towards the Easter break it’s good to stop and to take a few moments to reflect on the wide variety of events and activities that have taken place over the term. From Chaucer, to netball, to work experience, Weavers students have been busy being successful. As I write this the Year 11 basketball team are about to “Tip Off” against The Big Wood School from Nottingham, a win will see Weavers progress to the quarterfinals of this National competition. Come on Weavers Wildcats! Looking forward to the summer term means GCSE level exams for our Year 9s, 10s and 11s with AS and A2 level exams for Years 12 and 13. Students and staff are working really hard to maximise their success and we already know that once again our exam results this summer will take another step forward and be the best in the school’s history. Evidence from our GREAT system is showing that more and more students are consistently hitting their aspirational targets in all year groups and our data is allowing us to focus closely on those who need additional support to make the grade. The summer term also sees the launch of our Settling for Success (S4S) programme across the school. Students supported by staff and parents, will be focussing on key skills for effective learning; resilience, self-reliance, responsibility and reflection. I would like to wish students, staff and parents a relaxing and restful Easter holiday and I look forward to returning to a full and active summer term. Chaucer Man visit

On Tuesday 31 January 2012 the Chaucer Man paid a visit to Weavers School as part of National Storytelling Week. All Year 7 students were invited to attend because they have been studying the origins of the English Language.

The Pardoner’s Tale written by Chaucer in the 14th century was related in modern English. Part of the story was later told in Middle English and students were asked if they recognised the extract and those words that are still in use today.

Chaucer Man also spoke about the murder of Thomas A’Beckett and the pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral leading to how the Canterbury Tales evolved. Finally a story was told in Anglo Saxon English from 1200 years ago which was even harder to understand, although one clever student was able to say which story it was!

Did you know..?

Weavers School offers a wide variety of extra-curricular activities to suit all activities.

From film club to fitness, science club to samba band, you are sure to find something you will want to do.

Clubs run either before school, at lunchtime or after school.

Further details are available on the notice board at the bottom of R block stairs or from the Student Office.

Work Experience

Year 10 completed a weeks Work Experience from Monday 5 - Friday 9 March.

Students sampled working life in many areas including engineering, retail, hairdressing and education.

A big thank you goes out to all the employers who participate in this scheme and also to all the parents for all their continued support.

University Funding - Information Advice and Guidance For Parents and Students

Weavers Sixth Form Bursary and Scholarships Guide The Sixth Form team have produced a database of ALL bursary and scholarship funds available to our Year 13s planning to start university this September.

'The Bursary and Scholarships Guide' contains information on all the additional funding available at the universities applied to in 2012 including criteria for eligibility, contact details and guides on how to apply. This information is not heavily publicised by the universities and requires that the students apply for the funding - the universities do not automatically give out the money available just because you turn up.

Also included in the guide is information about the National Scholarship Programme, available to students from a household income of less than £25,000, if you receive this award you may be eligible for up to £3,000 per year in grant, so it makes sense to apply.

University does involve a large financial commitment but it is important to know that there are sources of funding out there that are available for a variety of eligibility reasons - you just need to identify which ones you're eligible for and then apply for them. Students can apply online now for Student Finance at www.direct.gov.uk .

Copies of the Bursary and Scholarships Guide are available for use to students in the Sixth Form area, a paper copy will be sent out to you after the Easter holiday, we hope it is of some use to you.

SETTLING FOR SUCCESS (S4S)

Settling 4 Success (S4S) is the collective responsibility of everyone involved in Weavers School to create a safe and enjoyable atmosphere in which high quality Teaching and Learning can take place. Whether you are a parent, student, teacher, governor or associate member of staff, your role is crucial to the realisation of S4S. Everyone is being asked to know and support S4S, when it is launched in school from 17 April. This will be their promise to abide by a set of rules governing daily routines in the school. Working together this will play a major part in driving the school forward.

Parents Parents have an important supportive role in S4S. Weavers School is working hard to ensure your child is learning and fulfilling their potential. They also have a responsibility for their child’s behaviour and we will be asking you to ensure the following: Your child -

Arrives in school punctually. On premises by 8.40 am.

Has a sensible breakfast before leaving for school, including a healthy drink.

Has suitable food and drink to provide them with energy throughout the day. Please do not allow them to bring caffeinated drinks and sweets into school.

Adheres to the S4S rules indicated below and support staff in implementing the school sanctions when appropriate.

Completes homework.

To support you with this, we will:

Ensure everyone knows what they are “signing up” to.

Ensure all our students understand what they can and cannot do and what will be the consequences of failure to adhere to S4S.

Deal fairly and consistently with anyone who breaks the S4S rules.

Ensure students are taught to the highest standard.

Year 11 basketball

The Year 11 boys basketball team have continued their march towards the final fours of the National Basketball competition. They have now played 6 and won 6 with a total of 434 points scored and 224 conceded. The boys are on a formidable run and are currently in the last 16 of the competition. Resounding victories against Twycross House 93-52 and St John Fisher Catholic School 57-29 has set up another home fixture on the 29 March 2012 at Weavers against The Big Wood School from Nottingham. Good luck to the boys for this fixture and all your support is needed in ensuring that Weavers become National Champions. Team: Luke Lewis, Luke Alexis, Kamal Brown, Calum Clement, Redford Williams, Matt Easter, Terrell Salmon, Conor McHale, Keenan Salmon, Scotland Maxwell

Year 8 rugby The Year 8 boys played their first competitive fixture of the year against Ferrers School and were unfortunate not to come away with a victory. Some outstanding work was done in the pack, most noticeably by Monir Idrissi and Jordan Parker. The boys unfortunately went down 20-12 to a more experienced team but an outstanding try from Joe Howie meant that the boys were able to hold their heads up high. Well done boys and a good foundation to build on.

Year 9 rugby The Year 9 boys also played their first competitive fixture against a much more organised and experienced Ferrers School team. After a slow start, conceding 3 tries in the first half, the boys were able to hold their own in the second half and were able to reduce the score to 21-7, with a great try from Josh Cayford, sliding in under the posts after some good hands in the middle of the field. Well done boys.

Year 7 netball Unbeaten! Our Year 7 netball team have won all their games convincingly against a range of schools across the district including Manor, Wrenn, Ferrers and Huxlow. Highlighted by all schools as outstanding, players include Amy Grant and Shannon Evans, who have co captained the side since September.

Netball training will start again in September – everyone welcome.
