Autumn Term 2015 Page 1 Newsletter 25 September 2015 Dear Parents It is an absolute pleasure to be back in school after the summer holiday. There is nothing as heart-warming as welcoming the girls back with their smiles, enthusiasm and sheer zest for life. Year 6 have been models of calm and control as they faced the 11+ Bucks transfer test earlier in the month. This is now behind them and many are well into their preparations for Independent School entrance. Well done girls for showing such maturity and retaining your sense of humour, an excellent start. It is also a relief to start a year without a building compound on site. This will be a year of consolidation in terms of use of facilities and a strong focus on making sure we provide the best possible environment for the girls. A crucial element of this is our pastoral care which provides the backdrop for great learning opportunities. You will have received my letter outlining our plans for this area and I welcome any feedback as always. We have also launched our ‘Maltman’s Mindsets’, which are the result of whole staff consultation and much thought. Mr Hammond will be writing to you about our Mindsets. I am thrilled that perseverance has been chosen as our first focus. Ability, knowledge and skills are worthless without perseverance. Inevitable risk-taking links to perseverance as the girls strive to do their best. I never cease to be amazed at the energy our girls put in to all they do and am proud of them. I wish you a happy and productive term. Just a reminder, all girls in Year 4 should be bringing their recorders to Music lessons (single class lesson NOT shared Singing lesson), along with their homework diary to record which pages to practise between lessons. If your daughter has lost her recorder OR Recorder Magic Book and needs a replacement, please let me know in writing. Please ensure recorder pouches are clearly named on the OUTSIDE as well as the recorder itself. Miss Guy Head of Music

Lost Property

Label it….Don’t Lose it!

We have a very good Lost Property system in school whereby Year 6 girls retrieve and return items of lost property to their rightful owners. However, we need your help. For the system to work properly, all items of clothing & equipment must be clearly named. Unnamed items cannot be returned but will be kept in Sick Bay for half a term and there after donated to the school second hand shop. Thank you in advance. Matron

Mr Hammond’s Challenge IV

A new term means a new challenge from Mr Hammond. This term,

creative writing is the focus. But be warned: there is a strict word

limit. Mr Hammond is looking forward to receiving entries from

Maltman’s girls of any age, before Monday 30th November.

In 99 words or fewer, write a story with the title “Surprise”.

This is called a piece of “flash fiction”. Your story could include the word “surprise”, or it could be the theme of the

story, or a surprise could happen in the story. You will not have enough words for everything you want to write, so do not

worry. Mr Hammond’s tip: be creative in your use of punctuation to save words. Please present your answers to Mr Hammond at any stage in the Autumn

Term, but no later than 4:15pm on Monday 30th November 2015.

Home Access Login

Dear Parents I am writing to remind you of an exciting development with regards to Espresso (Discovery Education). Maltman’s Green School have subscribed to this facility for a few years now and the girls use it in lessons. This year, our subscription includes home access so I am sending the details should you wish to use this amazing resource from your own devices. You can access Espresso and Espresso Coding from the same log in. Girls are very welcome to practise the coding that they are doing in school, but I would request that they don’t move ahead of the section they are using in class at this stage, please. You can log in to Discovery Education (at the top right of the page) using the details below:

Maltman’s Mindset

As you know, this year marks the launch of

Maltman’s Mindset, a project we are very

excited about. The term started off with an

assembly based around the Aesop’s fable,

the Tortoise and the Hare, to familiarise the

girls with the first mindset. The school is

buzzing with the word, and we are very pleased with the girls enthusiasm: we hope

your daughter has been talking about perseverance at home and would appreciate any

discussion you can have with her on this topic. We are currently developing a way in

which to advertise Maltman’s Mindset to parents when they are on-site and will keep

you updated.

The competition to design the symbol for perseverance has

closed. However, to win the chance to develop the school

symbol for collaboration (the mindset for next half-term), your

daughter should design (by hand or on the computer) a poster

on a piece of plain A4 paper that she thinks best represents this

mindset. The word “collaboration” must be visible on the poster.

The competition is open to all years from Nursery to Year 6 and

entries should be handed in to Mr Hammond's office no later

than Monday 12th October at 4pm. Please ensure that all

entries are named on the back of the piece of paper. Results will be announced as

soon as possible after this date.

For updates on how the project is progressing, parents can follow @MaltmansGreen

and @hammondteacher on Twitter (please note your daughter must not have a

Twitter account). If you have any suggestions or ideas on how Maltman’s Mindset

could develop, please contact Mr Hammond through the school office as usual.

Headmistress’ Commendation Amber Dean 5F For a fantastic summer holiday diary Rosie Allchurch 3A For your interesting summer holiday diary Isabella Goutkin-Smith 4L For a fantastic summer holiday project

My Trip to Wycombe Abbey by Fiona 4W I received a letter from Wycombe Abbey saying that I was invited to a Poetry Masterclass and Celebration Lunch and Prize-giving with an accompanying teacher (Mrs Wirth) on Friday, 18th September.

The day started with Mrs Wirth and I standing in a grand room in Wycombe Abbey having refreshments (tea, water and a choice of yummy biscuits) while we were waiting for the all the other girls and teachers to arrive. In the end, there were 17 girls and their English teachers. Then the Head of English at Wycombe Abbey led us into one of their libraries, which was very beautiful, for the Poetry Masterclass. We learnt some techniques to write a poem and talked about using objects and how to create a story about them. We were each given an object to use. Mine was a glasses case and the title I gave my poem was ‘The Laser Glasses’. After the Masterclass, we had our Celebration Lunch (which was delicious) before we all had to read our poems out loud, which I was very nervous about, but I managed fine. The prizes were handed out after the lunch and poetry reading and they were a certificate and a cute teddy bear key ring, which had a little T-shirt saying ‘Wycombe Abbey’ on the back and the school badge on the front. After the prize-giving, we had a tour around the school. I really enjoyed this special day!
