Seminarian Update

Hello to my St John family!

It's been a quite a while since I've been able to be with you in Celina, so I wanted to

give you an update about what I've been up to. The last year has been quite an ad-

venture in terms of my journey toward ordination. In May, I completed my second

year of classes at the Methodist Theological School of Ohio in Delaware, Ohio just

north of Columbus, including my first classes through Trinity Lutheran Seminary as

part of my "Lutheran year" courses. I have enjoyed so many of my classes and have been grateful for the

opportunity to learn from both seminaries and their unique gifts and perspectives.

In June I began my clinical pastoral education (CPE) internship as a hospital chaplain. I was able to work

in a community hospital right in my neighborhood in Columbus and deeply appreciated the chance to be

back among the people who had inspired me to pursue ordination in the first place. I learned a great deal

from my experience as a chaplain, but mostly importantly, the internship helped me to solidify my call to-

ward serving as a pastor in a congregation. And that's exactly what I told my synod when I met with them

for the first time in July to officially be entranced into the candidacy process for ordination in the ELCA.

Just a few weeks later, before I had completed my chaplaincy internship, I unexpectedly received another

call from the synod asking me to consider taking on a internship as the solo pastor in a small, redeveloping

congregation in the Linden neighborhood of Columbus after their previous pastor had left to take another

call. This type of internship is a little unusual and I knew it would be difficult while I was still a full-time

student, but I was grateful for the Synod's acknowledgement of my passion and gifts for urban ministry.

After some prayer and consideration, I agreed and I started serving as solo intern pastor at The Church on

Oakland Park just six weeks later!

The congregation at The Church on Oakland Park has welcomed me with open arms and I could not ask

for a better, more encouraging place to learn what it really means to pastor a church. As a redeveloping

congregation, the church is very small and working to rebuild itself. About 30 people attend worship every

week, and 30-45 kids from the surrounding neighborhood come every Wednesday night for dinner, games

and community. Though urban ministry brings lots of unique challenges, this is where my heart is and I'm

excited to see what is in store for the next chapter of this church.

Finally, this week I began my last semester of seminary classes. After my graduation this May, I will have

another 18 months or so to serve in my internship before being eligible for ordination and whatever new

adventure comes next. I am so very grateful for your support, both financially and keeping me in your

prayers thus far in my journey. Though preaching every week at The Church on Oakland Park makes it

difficult to be away on a Sunday, I hope to find a time soon that I am able to be with you all again in per-

son. Thank you, as always, for the firm foundation you offered me when I was younger, for encouraging

me to embark on this path, and for helping to sustain me along the way. You will always hold a special

place in my history and my heart.

In peace and gratitude,

Jacqui Buschor

40 Days of Wernle Our white Easter egg trees will be available throughout

Lent for our “40 Days of Wernle” project. You may con-

tribute to this project by selecting a numbered egg from a

tree and place your donation inside the egg to correspond

with the number on the egg. Then, place the egg in the

basket provided, or in the offering plate. If the egg in the

amount you wish to donate is not available, simply

choose any egg for your donation; it will be greatly ap-

preciated. These donations are for the Wernle Recreational Fund, used to sponsor the

youth for special events throughout the year.

Also, there will be baskets provided to collect personal care items (male and female).

Shampoo and conditioner bottles with flip tops work best. If you choose to donate in

this way, these items will be collected during the Lenten Season.

Getting ready to do some

SPRING CLEANING??

If so, don’t throw out those old shoes!

St. John is again participating in a program called “Shoes For Water”

in which we donate our old, but preferably “gently used” shoes (even

mismatches!) to a group who sells the shoes and uses the profits to

build wells for the people in developing countries.

Bins will be out for donations from March 15th-29th. Please attach

matching shoes by tying laces or rubber-banding them together. For

more information about the program, visit their website:

www.waterstep.org or call the office.

This is being sponsored by the St. John Evangelism Team in cooperation with Grand

Lake United Methodist Church.

St. John is a generous contributor to the CALL Food and Clothing

Pantry. It is often asked “What should I give?” or “What is

needed?” In response, we are doing an “Item of the Month”

donation. Although any item is greatly appreciated, the “Item of the

Month” reflects those items that are not discounted. This is one

great way that St. John is Making the Love of Christ Known.

Donations can be dropped off in the grocery cart in the Narthex or

the Box in the Family Life Center.
