Dear readers,  Welcome  to  the  ‘freshest’  first  issue  of our  e‐newsletter,  coming  hot  on  the heels with  this year’s motto namely  the power  of  ‘We’,  which  was  made  reality with  the  support  and  combined  efforts of my dedicated team*.  My  motto:  You  can  make  the  differ‐ence!!! Sometimes even doing the small‐

est  things that often go unnoticed can make the biggest  impact  for many. Mother Theresa once said:  “I  can do  things you cannot, you can  do  things  I  cannot;  together  we  can  do  great  things”,  words which  hopefully  will  spark  something  inside  of  you  today  while reading our e‐newsletter and cause you to act and help  in shaping the railway of tomorrow.  We trust you  find  it a useful update on our  local organisation, and that  it  presents  in  itself  a  window  of  opportunity  to  disseminate information properly and gain your confidence back in the work of JCI Quatre‐Bornes.   A central component of this issue is roundup of details which relate to various significant news and events that took place since the be‐ginning  of  the  year,  including  also  a  host  of  articles  ‐  short  pieces contributed by many of our members and Senators.  Enjoy the reading!

Dear JCI Quatre‐Bornes members, 

A man of success achieves his goals, while a man of significance changes his world. 

 It is not all about you winning; it’s about how many people you have helped to win. 

 The world will quickly forget you no matter how wealthy you are, but you will forever be remembered for how many NOBODY you helped to become SOMEBODY. 

 If you have the ability that goes beyond providing for your own needs, you have an obligation to reach down and lift up those who can’t meet their own needs. 

 My advice to you is: 

Always strive to be the BEST in all that you do, 

Let your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more and become more, 

If you have discovered a way out, don’t only go the way, show others the way out.

opportunity for Senators to guide new members  into  the  Organisation,  by being  humble  enough  to  teach,  irre‐spective  of  the previous post  or  posi‐tion held in JCI, and by being generous enough to show others the way to suc‐cess…  

The  JCI  QuatreBornes  Local  Board  in 2014 contains the right mix of experi‐ence, maturity,  ambition  and  drive  to create  a  successful  year.  This  will 

however  not  be  possible  without  the power  of  WE,  all  members,  hand  in hand in effort, and in celebration. 

It gives me immense pleasure to write a few words for the first edition of the 2014  JCI  Quatre‐Bornes  Newsletter. The  year  has  started  off  on  a  high tempo and I look forward to continued effort  in  our  bid  to  bring  about  posi‐tive  change.  My  vision  for  2014  may be  summarized  in  one  sentence:  re‐build  for  accrued  progress.  With  this vision,  the objectives  set by  the Local Board in 2014 are multi‐fold.  

First, strengthen the operating  frame‐work  of  the  organization.  Then  nur‐ture  Local  Board members,  members and aspiring members with a view  to promoting the emergence of new lead‐ers, both  for  the organization and  the community at large. While it is under‐stood  and  accepted  that  people  will leave the organization, the local Board will endeavour in 2014 to ensure that more people join the organization that they leave. This will be done by formu‐lating  an  appropriate  recruitment strategy.  Finally,  my  Local  Board  in 2014 will  ensure  that  the  tradition of JCI QuatreBornes, backed by 25 years of  experience,  is  continued  so  that members,  aspiring  members  and senators continue  to produce and  im‐plement quality projects, either aimed 

at  the  community or  for  the  individ‐ual development of the all those con‐nected with the chapter.  

As the Chapter President, I have cho‐sen the motto “The Power of “WE” ” for the year 2014. The reason behind this  is  that  JCI QuatreBornes  faces  in 2014 a year of rebuilding: many faces will  go and many  faces will  come  in; and  the Board’s  endeavour will  only be  successful  if  all  those  who  stay back  are  really  committed  to  the  JCI cause, and know the value of working together as a team, to create positive change. “The Power of WE” is an op‐portunity  for  each  and  every  mem‐ber, aspiring member and Senator of JCI  QuatreBornes  to  show  that  they care about  the Chapter,  to show that together  WE  can  change  the  world, together  we  can  impact  the  world, together WE can bring changes to our own  Chapter  and  revive  it  to  match and even exceed its previous success‐ful years. 

In  this  endeavour,  I  look  forward  to the  support  of  Senators  and  experi‐enced members.  JCI QuatreBornes  is likely  to  be  a  buzzing  place  in  2014 with many new faces; this will be the

The  induction  course  held  on  23 February  2014  was  an  immense opportunity  for  aspiring  members, members from all five local chapters and  those  from  the  National  Board to  interact,  to  share  and  hence  en‐hance  the  brotherhood  spirit  that prevails in JCI. 

The  training  course  organized  by the JCI City Plus was mainly catego‐rized  in  three  aspects;  JCI  Achieve, Project  Planning  and Parliamentary Procedures. 

JCI  Achieve  course  led  by  Nousrina Peerbux,  National  Deputy  Vice President,  has  highlighted  the  role of  JCI  as  a  nonprofit  organization aiming at creating positive change. A detail  outlook  was  further  given  to the  meaning  of  JCI  principles,  Mis‐sion and Vision. The true essence of being  a  JCI member  and  the  values that  should  transcend as  a member were highlighted.  JCI as a brand and product  on  both  local  and  interna‐tional  level were explained and em‐phasis  laid  on  how  all  actions  and project should be aligned to JCI Mis‐sion that is, to provide development opportunities  that  empower  young people  to  create  positive  change  in the society. 

Project  planning  course was  led  by Yudhish  Rama,  National  Vice  Presi‐dent.  Highlights  were  the  practical session  where  participants  had  to identify  major  problems  in  their own  community  and  come  up with possible  feasible  solutions.  The UNMG’s (United Nations Millennium Goals) were explained and emphasis has been  laid upon how any  identi‐fied project  in  JCI  should always be aligned to these goals. 

Parliamentary  procedures,  an  emi‐nent  part  in  JCI  dealings,  were headed  by  David  Commarmond, National  Secretary.  The  practical sessions have clearly helped partici‐

pants understand the protocol to be  respected and  followed  in  JCI meetings. 

The  induction  course  has  been truly beneficial and an enriching experience  to  all  participants. Congratulations to the four aspir‐

ing  members  of  JCI  QuatreBor‐nes;  Hanisha  Seeboo,  Drishtee Chadee,  Simi  Gopaul  and  Ismael Essackjee for having followed the 

course that day and for being JCI Achieve graduates now.

The  National  Debate  Championship  was  hosted by  our  friends  of  Junior  Chamber  International Beau‐Bassin/Rose‐Hill this year. The preliminary round was done on 1st March 2014 at Institut de Francais  (IFM)  and  the  grand  finale  on  10th March  2014  upon  visit  of  2014  Executive  Vice President  Basile  Djossouvi  at  Le  Clos  St  Louis, Domaine les Pailles. 

Our  team  from  Junior  Chamber  International,  Quatre‐Bornes,  was composed  of  aspiring member  Simi  Gopaul  as  team  leader, member Arjoon  Mohit  as  second  speaker,  member  Hevinsing  Calcutteea  as spare speaker and me as  first speaker. The motion was “Natural re­sources should belong to the world not to  individual country”. We were  against  the motion.  After  a  fruitful  debate  the  jury’s  panel  de‐clared the winner “City‐ Plus”. 

It was my  first  experience  in  the  JCI  family and  it was memorable.  I have been able to build my self‐confidence and found the team spirit among  the  team members.  I  have  also  learnt  the  value  of  having  an open‐mind  and  expressing  myself  in  a  calm  and  composed  manner while conveying my opinions on the subject. 

I would like to share with you that one of the Jury’s panel view said: being  a  good  debater  must  be  a  good  speaker,  master  his  subject which means  not  reading  a  text  and  should  know  how  to  reach  the audience and have a sense of humour.

Every once  in a while  there  is an  incessant need  to  take a break from the mundane lull of hectic life,  isn’t  it? Located in  the  south part  of Mauritius  in  a peaceful,  green,  breezy and sea facing place, Savinia again offered us the best natu‐ral getaway that bordered on not only  fun and excitement but  adventure  and  mad  rush  too,  that  rejuvenated  all  JCI members and non‐members to no end. 

The event has known a great feat since the past 3 years: laughs were shared, lots of food was consumed, much was learned, and all who were present spent an amazing time together. The enjoyment was much even spread as Savinia transformed into a DJ night party. Pictures were taken, and experiences and sights were committed to memory.  JCIQB would like to say a huge thank you to everyone present for hosting/participating in this year’s event and for their con‐

tinued support!

09 March 2014 saw the visit of an exceptional JCI Vice President to Mauritius. Senator Basile Djossouvi was a fresh breeze, who motivated young aspiring members while giving the right boost of pride to elder ones. JCI Quatre‐Bornes Local Board had the immense pleasure and honour to host Senator Basile over lunch on 12 March 2014, just a few hours before he left the country. 

The  lunch took place  in  the quiet premises of Opium Restaurant at Bagatelle and was a moment of  intense  insight  into Local Chapter management as well as of experience sharing. Senator Basile shared numerous small tips on how to prop‐erly manage a Local organisation, while stressing that  it was the most  important  job  in  JCI, because members make JCI grow and without members there will be no JCI. Additionally, Senator Basile discussed the responsibilities of each local board member, their importance to the proper administration of the Local Chapter as well as the concept of collective re‐sponsibility, so that the Local Board shone as one… We remember this brought a smile to the Local President’s face, as his motto  for  the  year  was  indeed  “The  Power  of  “WE”  ”  to  emphasise  that  he wanted the whole JCI QuatreBornes to think, work, participate and create posi‐tive change as one unit. 

Senator  Basile  has  captured many  young  people’s mind with  his  humility,  but also with his passion… we could all feel the fire inside him when he spoke of his active citizenship, about his desire to create a better world and while leaving, it left the whole Local Board elevated, and boosted to do even better and ensure a successful year in JCI QuatreBornes.

JCI Vice President 2014, Basile Djossouvi received a warm welcome at  the  Induction  Ceremony  hosted  by  JCI  Curepipe  on  10th  March 2014 at Le Clos St Louis Restaurant, Domaine Les Pailles. At the re‐ception, JCI President 2014 not only shared his passion with mem‐bers,  but  also  witnessed  the  induction  of  various  new  members 

from our Local Chapters. Welcoming on board our new members.  

Un  zeste  d'humour,  une  pincée  de réflexion  stratégique  et  une bonne dose  de  bon  sens.  Tels  furent  les ingredients  choisis  par  Kiran  Bhu‐jun,  Président  Local  de  la  JCI  Qua‐tre‐Bornes,  pour  animer  la  forma‐tion  Being a JCI Recruitment Agent, organisée  conjointement par  la  JCI Beau‐Basssin/Rose‐Hill  et  la  JCI Quatre‐Bornes. 

 

“Pour bien recruter,  il  faut d'abord définir la cible:  les caractéristiques que  nous  recherchons  chez  nos futures  membres”,  explique  Kiran Bhujun.  Prenant  exemple  sur  les Organisations  Locales  de  par  le monde  ayantl  eurs  spécificités,  il préconise à chaque Organisation de definer  sa  cible de  recrutement en fonction des besoins à moyen/long terme  mais  aussi  selon  l'orienta‐tion  ou  la  vision  de  l'Organisation. “La JCI nous permet de recruter des personnes âgées de 18 à 40 ans.  Il revient à l'Organisation d'affiner le périmètre  et  de  se  situer  soit  au centre, soit en tendant vers une des deux limites”.  

 

Le  choix  du  type  de  members  po‐tentiels  va  aussi  porter  sur  ce  que ces personnes ont à offrir à l'Orga‐

nisation  Locale.  “Un  universitaire ou  un  jeune  fraîchement  diploma possède  moins  de  resources  fi‐nanciers qu'un  jeune actif, mais  il est advantage motivé. On observe plus ou moins la tendance inverse chez  les  jeunes  actifs  ayant  quel‐ques  années  d'expérience  profes‐sionnelle”.  

 

Une fois notre cible définie, il nous faut déterminer les moyens à em‐ployer  pour  attirer  le  member potentiel.  Selon  Kiran  Bhujun,  il faut donner une image réaliste de l'Organisation.  “Il  ne  suffit  pas de promettremonts  et  merveilles pour que le member potential soit déçu par la suite. L'aspirant mem‐ber  doit  comprendre  qu'en  rejoi‐gnant  la  Jeune  Chambre  Interna‐tionale,  on  attend de  lui  qu'il  soit un citoyen actif et qu'il montre un certain engagement envers l'Orga‐nisation,  surtout  au  niveau  de  la participation  sur  les  projets”.  Ki‐ran  Bhujun  conseille  fortement  à chaque  Organisation  Locale  de porter un soin particulier à  la na‐ture de l'évènement choisi pour le recrutement,  notamment  dans  la décision de procéder à un recrute‐ment massif ouciblé. 

 

Réussir  son  recrutement  n'est qu'une partie réussie du parcours, car il faut pouvoir retenir le mem‐bre.  A  ce  sujet,  Kiran  Bhujun  re‐commande  de  biencerner  la  per‐sonalité  des  personnes  recrutées. “Un  member  potential  doit  abso‐lument sentir qu'il a quelque cho‐se à gagner ou à apprendre qui lui sera utile ou encore à donner. De ce  fait,  l'Organisation  Locale  doit connaître les centres d'intérêts de chaque  membre  aspirant  pour  le placer sur les projets qui vont sus‐citer  son  enthousiasme  à  travail‐ler”. 

 

La  formation  aura  très  certaine‐ment  permis  aux  12  participants presents d'acquérir des idées per‐tinentes pour developer et mettre en oeuvre avec succès la stratégie recrutement  au  sein  de  leur  pro‐per Organisation.

The world of photography is a world of its own. It has its own rules and its  intricacies. While  to  some,  photography  is  an  art,  to  others  it  is  a medium of expression and to many others it is a form of poetry. A good photo captures your attention and your senses in such a way that even a  thousand of words will  not be able  to describe. The  famous French fashion designer, Karl  Lagerfeld  elegantly  said  that  “…what I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossi­ble to reproduce...” 

Not everyone with a camera is a photographer. Though photography is about  passion  yet  this  talent  of  conveying  emotions  needs  to  be  ac‐quired  and  learned.  It  basically  in  the  endeavor  at  bringing  up  such skills  among  people  that  JCI  QuatreBornes  has  come  up  with  the Shoot@Site project.  

Shoot@Site,  aims  at  providing  a  platform  for  people  to learn and develop their flairs for taking pictures, under the guidance of Mr Samuel Appadoo who is a renowned profes‐sional photographer. MrAppadoo has a remarkable curricu‐lum vitae, bearing  international exposures; he has worked for international magazines such as Vogue (South Africa).  

The  six weeks’  course which  is  scheduled  to  start  on  12th April 2014, at  the Anglo Mauritius House (Port Louis) will provide to amateur photographers all the basic skills which are required to instigate the passion for the subject of pho‐tography. Moreover  the  course will  cover  aspects  such  as fashion & model photography as well as landscape photog‐raphy.  

The  team  members  working  on  the  project  are  Jhateen Ramnarain (Project Director), Hanisha Seeboo (Secretary), Ismael Essackjee (Treasurer), Dana Sunassee, Simi Gopaul, Valerie Magembe, Mitish Durbarry and Yugesh Baungally.
