see what the students create. Students will present to all other students in the school during the day and to all families from 2:40-3:20. SA Healthy Living - Fraser Health – FAQ from Parents and Students Student Question: Why is water so important? Answer: Drinking water is a great choice! Your body is made up of 60-70% water. The cells in your body are naturally made up of water. You lose water when your body does its daily work like digesting foods, taking in and carrying nutrients around the body, sweating, and remove waste. Limit or avoid drinks with added sugars such as pop, energy drinks, flavoured coffee, and flavoured waters like vitamin water as they contain little to no nutrients. Student Question: What can I use instead of Peanut Butter? Answer: Like many schools, Sikh Academy promotes a nut free environment. Peanut butter sandwiches are not allowed as peanut butter is made from peanuts. Instead, try these safe, nut free butters in your sandwich.

Sunflower seed oil

Sesame tahini

Peanut free WowButter

No Nuts Peabutter

Fraser Health Booths set up at Sikh Academy provide a lot more information for families. We encourage you to come into the school before during the days these booths are set up to meet with Fraser Health staff and gather some more information to help promote your healthy lifestyle. Fraser Health Booths will be available at:

Newton – May 23rd

and June 13th

Fleetwood – May 16th

and June 6th

SA Healthy Living - Fraser Health – Healthy Recipe SA is focused on providing students opportunities to learn about the importance of health awareness and live a healthy lifestyle. The findings from Fraser Health note the need to decrease the consumption of grains as the main portion of our student’s lunches, and to create a more balanced meal that includes vegetables, fruits and alternatives for protein. The recipe below is something parents can use to help achieve this goal.

Eating a nutritious meal in the morning helps provide long lasting energy and has been shown to have benefits when it comes to learning for children. For more healthy recipes visit www.fraserhealth.ca/SAHI.

Sikh Academy May Healthy Recipe – Apple Pie Oatmeal

Ingredients ¼ cup dalia ¼ cup water ½ cup milk

½ apple, chopped ½ tbsp chia seeds

¼ tsp pure vanilla extract ½ tsp cinnamon

Directions

In a non-stick pot over medium heat, combine dalia, water, and milk. Add in chopped apples*, chia seeds, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and stir often. Cook over medium heat for about

10-15 minutes, or until almost all of the liquid is gone and the dalia are creamy.

*If desired, add in the chopped apple once the oatmeal is

cooked for extra crunch!

Granny smith or gala apples are recommended. Granny smith apples tend to have a slightly tart taste and gala apples are

more sweet.
