Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
Congratulations to Carmel Keane - We were delighted to hear that Miss Keane was award-
ed the CYMFED Inspiring Youth Leader Award for England and Wales at the ‘Celebrating Young
People Awards’ in London on Thursday night. This is in recognition of the outstanding work that
Miss Keane does to support young people in our community and is thoroughly deserved!
Exams - Over the next three weeks students in all year groups will be taking part in exams and end of term assessments.
They start next week when students in Years 12 and 13 will be sitting their mock exams. These will be followed by Year 11
mock exams during week commencing 4 December. All remaining year groups from Years 7-10 will be taking part in end of
term assessments that also begin next week. Students should be using their Assessment Booklets and other revision material
to help them prepare for these important assessments. We wish all students the best of luck.
Year 9 Parents’ Evening - We look forward to seeing all Year 9 students and their parents at Parents’ Evening on Thursday
7 December, 4.30-7.15pm. Subject staff and the tutorial team will be on hand to discuss targets and the progress being made
on your son/daughter’s individual courses. Following feedback from parents, we are trialling a new online booking system,
therefore it is really important that parents and students are on time and keep to their 5 minute appointment time. If parents
have any problems booking appointments please phone or email the school for support.
Year 12 Parents’ Evening Advance Notice - We look forward to seeing all parents and students at Years 12 and 13
Parents’ Evening on Thursday 14 December, 4.30-7.15pm. This is a very important evening for Years 12 and 13. Subject staff
and the tutorial team will be on hand to discuss targets and progress being made. This is the first of two parents’ evenings for
Years 12 and 13. The second takes place on 15 March 2018.
Safer Travel to and from School - Students are reminded to be careful travelling to and from school during the dark
winter nights. Students should always try to avoid travelling alone and make sure that they never talk to strangers.
Non-uniform Day - To support our Advent fundraising there will be a non-uniform day on Friday 1 December. Students will
be allowed to come into school in their own clothes in exchange for a £1 donation.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Greetings from America
Last week we had a further update from former student, Alex Morgan, who is studying Liberal Arts at Connecticut College.
Alex has been voted House Sentor and is now part of the student government. Alex has signed up for his classes for next
semester - History of Modern Philosophy, German, Computer Science and History of Modern Latin America. Alex will be travel-
ling to Cuba in March on an all expenses paid trip as part of his History of Modern Latin America course. Students had to be invited to take part in
this course and Alex was invited by his History professor.
Alex will be spending Thanksgiving with a friend in Connecticut but hopes to visit us after the Christmas break.

Primary School Chaplaincy Team Training
On Wednesday 22nd November we hosted a training day for our primary School chaplaincy teams. We started
the day with Advent prayer stations, followed by gospel dramas, a giant Advent wreath and we finished the
training day by preparing the Mass together. The chaplaincy teams were fantastic and prepared absolutely
everything for the Mass themselves - the music, drama, dressing the altar, setting up the hall, leading the
Liturgy of the Word and writing bidding prayers. We had a team of Year 9 helpers who worked really hard
to make the day a great success. Thank you to Fr Pat for celebrating Mass for us and to all the staff and
pupils in both schools that made the day possible.

‘A Christmas Carol’ Trip
On Thursday 30th November, we are taking 205 students (students from Years 11 and 10) and 15 members of
staff to the RSC theatre, in Stratford, to see a production of A Christmas Carol (GCSE English Literature set
text).
Please see below the plan and expectations of the evening trip:
There will be no Period 6 on Thursday 30th November for Year 11 students.
Students should, where possible, go home at the end of the school day and have dinner at home.
Students should arrive back to school from 5.15pm and should report to the Pope Francis Hall where they will sign in and find
out which coach/group they are in.
Students must be in school by no later than 5.30pm.
Students should wear smart/casual dress; no hats/caps are permitted as these may restrict views in the theatre.
The coaches will leave the school site at approximately 6.15pm.
Students must not eat on the coach, nor in the theatre during the performance.
Students should be reminded that the RSC is a reputable, established and extremely popular theatre. There will be members
of the public there on the evening and students are acting as ambassadors for Cardinal Newman School. Perfect behaviour is
expected.
There will be a short interval during the performance, where students may purchase ice creams and snacks, however we advise
that students bring a snack from home as queues will be long and the performance will resume after the scheduled interval.
Our estimated time of arrival back to school is 11.15pm; updates will be posted on Facebook and Twitter, so please follow
our social media.
All students MUST have handed in their reply slip which informs us how they plan on getting home after we return back to
school site.
Students are expected in school the following day.
A huge thank you to all the staff who have supported with the planning and organisation of the trip, and a particular thank you to the staff
who have offered to give up their Thursday evening and join us for this festive performance.
I am sure the evening will be enjoyed tremendously by all those involved!

David Walliams Day
On Wednesday we had a fantastic day in the library celebrating the hugely popular
and entertaining children’s author David Walliams. Inspired by Roald Dahl Day, a
national annual event, I decided to create a David Walliams Day to ensure that
literacy was relevant and accessible to all students across the school.
All students that borrowed a book from the library yesterday were issued with a raffle ticket to be entered into a prize draw to win a David
Walliams book. We also ran a competition for students to decide the title of David Walliams next book…this proved extremely popular
and certainly makes for some interesting reading! I will be sending all of the suggestions to David Walliams himself so you never know, he
may be inspired by some of them!

Review of Health Care Plans
Cardinal Newman Catholic School are currently reviewing the
Medical Health Care Plans for all students who require them.
In order to maintain accurate records and manage your child's
medical welfare at school, parents and carers will be asked to let
us know of any changes or new developments of your child’s
medical and healthcare needs.
In the event of any significant changes, we will invite parents and
carers to attend a meeting at school to discuss individual needs
and the review Health Care Plans together.
If you feel that your child should have a Health Care Plan but
does not currently have one, please contact Miss Sarah
Matthews, our School First Aider who will be happy to assist.
Mr P Wells
Weekly Prayer Eternal God, you are present in all places,
so that we cannot be in any place where
you cannot be found. Give us the sense of your presence and
knowledge of your fatherly love. We commend to your care and
keeping all those who travel by road or rail, or walk to distant
places of our land. Protect them by your power and bring them
safely to the end of their journey. In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
