ACTING PRINCIPAL REPORT

Dear Community,

It is with great pleasure that I once again step into the role of Acting Principal for this term, whilst our College Principal, Ms Kerri Bolch, has taken on the role of Acting Southern Peninsula, Senior Education Improvement Leader (SEIL).

The motto when I was at school was ‘Aspice porro, aspice retro’ - look forwards look backwards.

That was the opening line to my speech to the Year 12 Cohort of 2018 at their final assembly. Their challenge will be to look forwards to what is to come - using what they had learnt in order to get there. In reflecting on the impact that we have had on the lives of those students in fulfilling their dreams, and equipping them with the necessary skills to take the next step in their journey, it becomes clear that they have given as much to us in our journey as educators. I want to publically acknowledge the efforts of the staff, because it is to their credit, through their hard work and dedication, that they have helped shape the generation to come.

The Berwick College Dance Academy had strong representation in both lead roles and the mass dance in this year’s State School Spectacular, which took place in the penultimate week of last term and was an amazing experience for all involved. This week saw the personal auditions for the 2019 Spectacular as it is recognised within the industry that we have exceptional talent here at the College.

Last week was our inaugural Year 9 Tasmania trip with over 100 students and 11 staff on distant shores, and by all accounts it was a memorable trans-Tasman adventure that allowed students the opportunity to experience both the history and geography of that amazing State. In the coming weeks both the College’s Volleyball and Basketball Academy teams will undertake their respective Nationals tournaments and are training hard to ensure they are prepared for a week that not only challenges them physically but mentally.

The Arts and Technology departments both showcased their work throughout last week with a wide range of exhibitions and competitions, displaying the talents of our students in a range of different mediums. This also included an artist in resident who produced works down in the Art area of the school which have proven so popular that other Domains in the school now want their own subject representation “#Maths multiplies your choices!” The Dance Academy 2018 Junior Production “Enter the Carnival” ran last week for 3 nights and again demonstrated their amazing skills and creativity, and I particularly enjoyed the piece ‘The Contortionist”.

The coming weeks will see the development of the 2019 Annual Implementation Plan formed in conjunction with the staff, the leadership team, College Council and our SEIL, Mark Anderson. The College’s success demonstrated by the implementation of Literacy for Learning and the NAPLAN results, have meant that we have met our targets in a number of areas, and the other data sources including Student Attitude to School (SASS), the parent opinion survey and the school staff survey will be used as a baseline for determining the targets and strategies for 2019.

The local agreement between the school and the new Casey Tech School looks to be a promising undertaking in exposing students to cutting edge resources, which will be made available for the development of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) projects here at the College. Staff are already engaging with the technology to promote this as an area within their respective Domains. The coming weeks will see all of Year 8 visit the centre to expose them to the potential future pathways being created in those fields.

Probably one of the single biggest undertakings in the last few weeks has been the creation of the Berwick College Masterplan, which shows the projected development of the physical infrastructure against the future needs of the College, to ensure that we met the teaching and learning requirements of future generations. Stage one of that master plan is coming into being with multiple consultations around the Health & Wellbeing Centre, which is due to come online in late 2019 early 2020, and the provision of what that space might look like. The range of services that it will offer, not only to the students and staff here at the College but also the wider community, will allow us to support not only their educational development but their social and emotional needs as well. An absolute must if we are to provide the best opportunities to ensure student success in the years to come

I look forward to the challenges ahead and my intentions in supporting the Students, Staff and Community in this role over the coming term.

Regards, Mr James Doble Acting Principal

FAREWELL TO OUR YEAR 12 STUDENTS

What an outstanding year the class of 2018 have had! Well done to each and every one of our students for officially finishing your last ever classes in a school setting. Year 12 is known for being challenging, and whilst exams are still be completed, we must acknowledge how proud we are of our students for demonstrating outstanding resilience and determination to get where they are today.

In amongst the stresses of assessments and completing coursework this year has provided our students with many opportunities to create lifelong memories. From the athletics carnival at the start of the year to the formal, trivia night, staff vs. student basketball matches and so much more, our students have developed a deep sense of connectedness to enjoy some wonderful experiences.

The last day was an excellent opportunity for our students to celebrate finishing their time here at Berwick College. Year 12 Students and their teachers enjoyed a free pancake breakfast and coffees, whilst having their shirts signed and sharing good memories. This was followed by a school assembly and then a Year 12 Assembly where students were presented novelty awards before watching a farewell video. It was a great day had by all!

To the students who are sitting their exams, we wish you all the very best. Continue to work hard as these next few weeks are crucial in ensuring that you can achieve the best results possible.

We have our Valedictory evening coming up on Wednesday 21st November which is set to be a fantastic evening to celebrate the graduation for the Class of 2018. This event will be held at the Pakenham Racecourse and we would like to send a friendly reminder to Parents that payment for this event is required by Friday 2nd November.

In our first year in the role of Year 12 Coordination, we couldn’t have asked for a better year. Thank you to the class of 2018, we hope that 2018 has served as a memorable one. Good luck! Mr Watson and Ms Dikeos—Year 12 Coordinators.

DANCE ACADEMY NEWS

ENTER THE CARNIVAL Last week our Year 7, 8 & 9 BCDA students performed in their junior production of ‘Enter the Carnival’.

This production consisted of student choreographed dances, where the choreographers also had to teach their peers their dance for performance. All students did so well, and should be commended on their performances over the 3 nights.

It is always such a good learning experience for students to step into the shoes of choreographers and teachers in front of their peers, so they can further understand the processes involved in putting together a show.

VET 3/4 PERFORMANCE EXAMS We wish all the Unit 3/4 VET Dance students the best of luck in their upcoming dance exams. They will be

performing 2 solos taught by industry professionals in different styles. They have been working on them all year and

we are sure they will do well!

VCE ARTS AND TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITION

On Monday the 15th of October, the College held our annual VCE Arts and Technology Exhibition in the library. On

behalf of the staff and students of the Arts and Technology Domains, visitors to the exhibition were warmly wel-

comed by Mr James Doble, our Acting Principal.

Musical entertainment was provided by a group of very talented student guitarists, and was led by their teacher

James Peden. The evening was well attended by the College community. The exhibition was an opportunity for

our Art, Visual Communication Design, Studio Arts, Product Design and Technology and Media students to show-

case their outstanding art and design work.

This annual exhibition also provides younger students and the community with an insight into the Arts and Tech-

nology programs offered at our College. Students are to be commended for their efforts and their teachers for

their support in enabling these students to reach such excellent standards.

ARTS WEEK

Berwick College had the privilege of having an Artist In Residence during our annual ARTS WEEK - Street Artist Mikey Newman (MikeyXxi).

With over 25 years of street art experience, Mikey has been able to transform the classrooms outside D12, D13, D14 and music room with dynamic images reflecting the subjects taught in those rooms.

Since the mid 90’s Mikey has been working on refining his own unique style and diversity of themes, creating hundreds of murals over 3 decades that are showcased both free to the public eye in the street and commissioned pieces that adorn the walls of private homes.

Mikey has also worked on multiple council and corporate projects. We look forward to working with Mikey on future projects.

Our talented art students were amazing and worked diligently on Tuesday to brighten up the canteen plaza with colourful and skilfully sketched chalk drawings.

Ms Rimma Campos VCE VCD Teacher

This week we hosted the Art Exhibition in the Library. WOW we certainly have very talented students. It was wonderful to see the pride the students have in their work, assembling the items, making adjustments, giving suggestions to other students, working in a team and helping the teachers carry exhibits up and down the hill. Congratulations to the whole team.

Due to popular demand, and a small protest, we have bought back Anime films. These will be shown on Thursday at lunchtime in the Theatre. We have introduced Glee Friday, so come to the Theatre for some toe-tapping fun. Just a reminder that all resources must be returned to the Library by the due date.

MENTOR PROGRAM We had another awesome competition between our 11 Mentor Groups last week on Tuesday 9th of October. The challenge was to make paper chain people! We had a prize for the longest chain, a prize for the most creative design and a prize for the best teamwork. It was very impressive to see the amount of support, leadership and collaboration between all of the groups. Another focus for this session was Growth Mindset and it was amazing to see the change in the resilience and determination of our year 7s from our last session. Well done! Thank you to all of our Mentors who come to each session with so much positivity and enthusiasm to help our year 7s.

FROST UPDATE It was lovely to see so many of our parents at Parent Teacher Interviews at the end of last term.

Some of our Year 9s went on the Tasmania Adventure last week. We hope you all had fun!

It aims to help mentors develop their skills and lead a group of students by developing their communication skills and confidence through the responsibility of working with younger students. The program aims to build relationships with students of all ages to make sure that everyone understands and respects that differences and individuality should be celebrated, rather than engaging in bullying and exclusion.

Well done to the following students who have nominated to be a part of the mentor program for 2019: Lachlan Chalmers, Holly Moulday, Jaylee Vella, Olivia Cerdor, Patrick Nicholls, Taylah Wilson, Erynn Hartnett, Chloe Maas, Ryan Mills, Poppy Hammill, Emma-Rose Davey, Bonnie Mayers, Holly Faraday & Charlize Shead.

KENNY CARERS As part of Art week at Berwick a chalk pavement art competition was held in the canteen and involved students from the different learning teams.

Representing Kenny were two of our talented students Ruby Coupar and Sam Buntrock. Ruby designed an original image and then with the help of Sam spent two periods drawing it up and then colouring it in. They both did a fantastic job and are to be congratulated on their skill and talent.

Our Kenny students don’t just do great things at school they also do great things on their holidays, special mention goes to Alex and Christopher.

Alec Butler (pictured top right) went to Brisbane to compete in the CFFA National Tiles. Alex is a striker in the team and represented the under 16 boys’ team. The team came third overall. Well done on a great result.

Jeremy Macwhirter Swindle (pictured bottom right) is completing a Certificate III in

Business Administration as part of this course he completes one day of work placement,

he does this at Pakenham Police station. His role involves helping with administration

and some paperwork, this opportunity allows him to develop his skills in business and

also gain an insight into the role of the police in our local community. Well done Jeremy

keep up the good work.

MONASH DAY – THURSDAY 22ND NOVEMBER, 2018 Monash day will be held on Thursday 22nd November, 2018. The Monash students will work towards raising money to support the charities, Legacy and Pets of the Homeless. These charities have been selected as they have a connection to Sir John Monash’s life and subsequently the values of the Monash Learning Team.

HELP PLEASE - One of the main activities to be held on the day will be related to construction and design. For the activity we require lots of ‘construction’ materials. This could be boxes, cardboard rolls (not toilet ones though), even chop sticks! Please bring along any items that could be used in a construction activity to F7 as soon as possible and in the box near the Monash Learning Team desks. The only ‘rule’ is that we need 8 identical copies of the item.

ACHIEVEMENTS Pavement Art Competition Congratulations Monash – the winners of the Pavement Art Competition! Your ‘Parrot’ art piece was voted the best over all the other Learning Teams. Congratulations to Maham Umar, Tanisha Wade, Trinity Wright and Jacob Pace (who gave up his study period to help the girls) for all their hard work brightening up the canteen plaza. Their sketched chalk drawings where amazing.

Casey Stride, Series for 5km race. Congratulations to Daniel Bull, who recently ran in the first race of three in the Casey Stride, Series for 5 km race.

This is his first time competing in a race of more than 3 kms. He finished 3rd in the U17 boy’s category, and finished 12th overall 12th in the Men’s open section. What a fantastic achievement! Congratulations to the Monash Junior Dance Academy students who performed, “Enter the Carnival” over three nights last week. The students are certainly very talented. Also, well done to the Monash Year 9 students who attended the Tasmania camp last week. I believe they all had a wonderful time, experiencing the culture and history of Tasmania. Please continue to let us know about your achievements. As your Monash teachers we are all very proud of you. We would love to celebrate them with you.

ATTENDANCE Parents, please continue to use Compass to mark your child’s absence/s. Alternatively, please advise the Attend-ance Officer or your child’s Home Group teacher if your child is away and you cannot access Compass or require as-sistance. A reminder that all students are now required to sign in and out from the Front Office if they are late to school or are required to leave school early. It’s hard to believe that we are already a few weeks into Term 4. Our students are busy completing and submitting assessment tasks as their classes draw to a close. Our Headstart period will begin and week 7. Headstart is an essential period of learning for our students, and quite literally gives them a ‘headstart’ on their next year of schooling.

The Hollows Learning Team have had nearly 20 students sign up to help mentor 2019 Year 7 students next year. These students will work with groups of Year 7 students to ease their transition to Berwick College. Hollows have two classes of Year 7s coming in next year, meaning we will add an additional homegroup. Thank you to our wonderful students who have signed up to mentor next year.

Thank you also to Christian Mackerras who represented Hollows in Arts Week competitions. The Art department ran some sensational activities throughout the week.

Congratulations to Hollows student Andrew Bull who

ran 5kms in the Casey Stride Series. Andrew (just 14

years old) finished first in the Under 17 Boys category.

He was fourth overall in the Men’s Open category. This

was Andrew’s first time competing in a race over more

than 3kms. Well done Andrew.

HOLLOWS HAWKS

With only 4 weeks left in this year’s timetable, we remind students to keep up with their stud-ies as teachers will be finalising topics soon and the older year levels will be sitting exams with-in this time frame. After this 4 weeks, students will start their 2019 timetable. Current Year 11 students will start Year 12 subjects from Monday 19th November (for 2 weeks). Current Year 10 students will start Year 11 subjects from Monday 19th November (for 3 weeks) and current Year 7, 8 and 9’s will complete head start for 4 weeks from November 19th.

Our Year 7 High Achievers class have spent several lessons over almost all their subjects focussing on each subject

and how it can relate to ancient Egypt (which was their Humanities topic). In food, the students designed and

produced food items that may have been typical in ancient Egypt and in P.E they played some games that were

typical of the period. This has been combined with artwork, maths problem solving and science projects related to

ancient Egypt. Students from this class will be putting together a presentation, showcasing their talents. Their

parents will be invited in later this term to share in their learning.

YEAR 9 TASMANIA TRIP

On Monday afternoon 105 eager Year 9 students and 11 staff ventured into Station pier to catch the ‘Spirit of Tasmania’ over to Australia’s smallest and most southern state, Tasmania.

The ship looked large as we walked closer to it. Inside, cabins were sorted and then students were free to explore the ship. There were games rooms, lounges, cafes and restaurants and a multitude of corridors that made it easy to get lost when trying to find your cabin. Some students enjoyed a movie in the theatre that night and luckily the seas were calm and nobody was sick.

We arrived in Devonport at about 6 am. After breakfast we travelled to Tasmania’s second largest city after Hobart, Launces-ton. We walked the beautiful Cataract Gorge and enjoyed lunch in the warm sunshine (we heard it was wet and cold in Melbourne). From here we travelled to Port Arthur where we spent the night at the caravan park. That night we did the ghost tour. It was actually quite spooky and it was fun to see the students jump and scream at the scariest spots. We returned to Port Arthur the following morning where we got the see and understand the historical significance of this place. We learnt of the punishments and the conditions the convicts endured. We also enjoyed a cruise around the port and got to see the Isle of the dead, a small island where over 1000 convicts are buried.

We then were bussed to Hobart, seeing various rock and sea formations on the way. We arrived in Hobart to the weather changing and starting to appear a bit like what Melbourne had been having. We did a walk around the historic buildings and port of Hobart city.

The next morning was grey and dreary, and we could not see Mount Wellington from our hotels. This was not a good sign as we should be able to see it from the ground. Then the skies cleared and we headed up to the spectacular views of Mt Wellington, sitting 1,270 metres above Hobart. We could see the clear mountain top all the way. As we parked the bus on the mountain the fog and clouds rolled back in and obscured our view. There were just enough glimpses of the city below to keep the camera’s rolling.

We then began the long journey back to Devonport through the Tasmanian countryside. A trip back to Melbourne was a little rougher but still no one got sea sick. Yay!

Thank you to all the Year 9’s for their great behaviour and attitude on the camp and hopefully you enjoyed seeing this part of

Australia and seeing some of the locations of some of our colonial history.

YEAR 8 HAP ENGLISH

The two year 8 High Achievers classes went on an excursion for English to ACMI at Federation Square in the last week of term 3. The day was spent firstly watching the Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland which will form the basis of our English study in term 4. This viewing was followed by a half hour talk about the history of Alice in Wonderland and the filmmaking of Tim Burton.

Then after a short lunch break, which involved slurpees that were bigger than the students themselves and far too many doughnuts, the students attended the Wonderland exhibition. This exhibition was an interactive experience that allowed students to be immersed in the world of Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland; right from the moment they entered the exhibition through the small door, through to attending the Mad Hatter’s tea party and transforming themselves into a card guard in the Queen of Hearts garden.

The excursion was a great opportunity to get both of the year 8 HAP classes together and provided students with an enjoyable experience that extended their learning beyond the classroom. Mrs Amy Broekmann

YEAR 10 GAME OF LIFE – WORK EXPERIENCE 2019 All year10 students will be enrolled in Game of Life in either Semester 1 or 2 in 2019. As part of this subject, it is a compulsory requirement to complete 1 week of work experience in a field of interest. During Headstart (week commencing 19th November), Laura Germano will be visiting the Semester 1, 2019 Game of Life class to distribute detailed information about this requirement.

It is recommended that these students start to look for an employer for the Semester 1 work experience week before the end of the year, to ensure that they don’t miss out. Students will be expected to adhere to the closing date for the submission of these work experience forms, and this information will also be communicated to parents in a timely manner.

In the last week of Term 3, our Semester 2 Year 10 students all participated in work experience, and from all

accounts, they found this a very positive experience. The skills they were able to learn, will definitely give them

an advantage when looking for part time work, and it’s a great addition to their resume.

Year 12 Students Applying for University or TAFE courses for 2018 The majority of our Year 12 students have now finalised their preferences on VTAC (if university or TAFE is their pathway). Kate Rolls has met with each Year 12 student to ensure they are being given plenty of support to secure either a place at university or TAFE; or they have been given information to assist them with finding an apprenticeship/traineeship or full time job. If your child needs additional assistance, please encourage them to visit the Careers Centre for support.
