pressure and change in
dimensions in pressurized
conditions .
BLOOMING IN RUBBER
The change in surface color due to migration of rubber
chemicals on the rubber surface is called blooms. As rubber is
compounded with multiple chemical ingredients to achieve the
desired properties. Various chemicals have different level of
solubility in the rubber matrix. During processing of the
compound the chemicals get solubilized and absorbed in the
compound due to high temperature. But after cooling down to
room temperature the excess chemicals are observed on the
surface. The most common blooms are from Sulphur, zinc
stearate, wax, sometimes accelerators and antioxidants when
used in excess. Some chemicals like wax are deliberately added
to bloom to the surface and form a protective layer against
ozone. The bloom can be analysed by using FTIR – ATR,
GCMS and SEM – EDX.
