COMMUNITY SERVICE

As part of the IPC/IMYC curriculum, we would like students to participate in Community Service activities that will raise awareness of both the needs of the school community and the wider community that we live in.

This year we will have four major organizations or activities running throughout the year. Each house will be responsible for one activity per term. The responsibility will rotate each term, so that students have the opportunity to participate in all the activities throughout the year. The main causes for the year are: AIKWANGWON Aikwangwon is a school and home for the severely physically or mentally disabled; children and adults of all ages live and learn here in a very loving and nurturing environment. The school provides education, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and job skills training including baking, sewing, weaving, ceramics, arts, gardening and farming.

The main focus of the school is to provide companionship for the residents of the centre. Students will play games, do craftwork and interact with the residents of Aikwangwon. This is a golden opportunity to learn from each other and to cultivate compassion for others.

We will also resume our weekly bake sale at both the Upper and Lower Schools. Aikwangwon has a bakery on their premises, and the baked goods will be up for grabs at 1.30 - 2pm every Wednesday starting Wednesday 23rd of October BAPS The Busan Abandoned Pet Sanctuary (BAPS) is a unique project in South Korea. They provide a "home for life" for abandoned dogs, and have a "non-kill" policy Their main aim is to provide a loving environment for the animals. Animals are up for adoption, and they can only take in a new resident once a dog has been adopted because of limited space.

The school will focus mainly on fundraising for BAPS, and if possible go and volunteer at the sanctuary one Saturday. ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB The environmental club's responsibilities are to raise awareness of how we can make a positive contribution to the environment. Recycling programs, toy swaps and beach clean-ups are some of the activities the Eco Club will take responsibility for, UN CELEBRATIONS On the year plan, certain days that coincide with the UN's calendar have been identified. The main responsibility of our House members will be to make awareness posters, run certain activities and games on that specific day. They will also help with the organization of bigger events, such as, International Day, Book Day or International Day of Peace. “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because some day in your life you will have been all of these” - George Washington Carver If you would like to get involved in any way, please contact Ms Lizelle at [email protected]

ISK HEALTHY LIFESTYLES PROGRAM – MEET HAROLD! As part of our Healthy Lifestyles Program this year at ISK we have been talking about the importance of healthy eating and exercise. To help us learn more about this we have had a special visitor, his name is Harold. Harold is a happy, healthy caterpillar! He has been visiting classes around the school telling the children what he does to stay healthy!

Please help us to create a happy and healthy school by providing healthy snack and lunch choices for your child.

WET DAYS Please bring children to school with rain coats and boots on days when the weather looks as if it might be wet. In between showers or when there is just a very light drizzle, the children may be able to play outside if they have suitable cloths and footwear. Even a few minutes break time outside can help them feel more ready to learn when they come back in.
