CEO Kate Brunt Welcome to our final newsletter of the 2019-2020 school year. What a year this has been! I am delighted to be able to share with you the numerous exciting events, activities and achievements that have continued to happen in all schools across the trust during this challenging time. I have been overwhelmed by the sense of community within and across our family of schools this term as staff, parents, carers and pupils have continued to share videos, photos and supportive comments on social media and children from across the trust have participated in MAT events such as the Rivers Rainbow Challenge and our art competition. Thank you everyone for the innovative ways you have reached out to one another to keep our Rivers family connected and together. The crisis has shown us all just how beneficial collaboration across the trust is for our pupils; staff have continued to learn from each other and to share ideas and best practice across all schools and our new, central home- learning team has been delivering online learning from June for all children who can’t be in school. This is an exciting time for our trust; I am thrilled to be able to tell you that three new schools and a nursery will soon be joining our vibrant and growing MAT. Summerhill Primary Academy, Jubilee Park Academy, Summerhill’s Little Treasures Nursery and Cherry Orchard Primary School will be joining us during the school year 2020-2021. We look forward to welcoming all staff, parents, carers and pupils into our family of schools. This is extremely positive news for the trust. As part of this growth phase, we have appointed Kerry Rochester as Director of Education and Russell Dalton as Director of Operations. Both Kerry and Russell bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the trust and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome them both to our Rivers family. I want to finish by thanking you all for the way that you have responded to the Covid-19 crisis. In particular, I want to thank our creative and committed staff, who have continued to work in school and at home to ensure that our children receive the best experience possible, and our amazing parents and carers, who have supported their children’s home learning throughout. Across the trust, over 75% of eligible pupils have returned to our schools which shows the high level of confidence that parents and carers have in our schools, our leaders and our trust. I am proud to be part of such a caring, dedicated and pro-active community. I wish you all a well-earned break over the summer and I look forward to full school opening and being together again in September. A Warm Welcome to the Rivers Central Team

We are delighted to announce that there are two new members joining the Rivers central team when we return in the new academic year. We had a huge field of extremely talented applicants for these key roles and I am thrilled to welcome Kerry Rochester as our new Director of Education and Russell Dalton as our new Director of Operations. I am positive that they will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the trust.

Hello everyone,

I am very excited about joining the Rivers CofE Academy Trust as the new Director of Education/Deputy CEO from the 1st November 2020.

I have worked in schools for the past 25 years, and have been CEO of a small MAT for the past few years. I am passionate about ensuring all pupils get the highest possible quality of education and my aim is to ensure that by working together, we can utilise the strengths of all schools within the trust to enrich opportunities for our pupils, whatever their starting points.

I look forward to working with everyone across the trust to continue to build upon their goal of ensuring that each and every child fulfils their maximum potential.

Hello everyone,

My name is Russell Dalton and I am really looking forward to joining the Rivers Team as the Director of Operations from the 1st September. I am very excited about the role, meeting all the staff and working with everyone across the trust for the benefit of all the children in the family of Rivers’ schools.

Having worked as a School Business Leader in a variety of settings for the last 15 years, I am well equipped to face the challenges that lie ahead, and able to support you in striving for the highest standards. I am passionate about collaborative working and the benefits that this can bring to everyone, so to come to Rivers is going to be an absolute pleasure. I will strive to ensure we have the greatest efficiencies and effectiveness in all our schools and will do all I can to support and motivate staff to achieve this. These are unprecedented times, but I hope that it won’t be long before I can be a full member of the ‘Rivers Family’.

Stay safe and enjoy your summer break.

The Green Man of Burlish Park Forest School

Mrs Pates has been reading ‘The Green Giant’ to her class. The children discovered that he is made entirely of plants and greenery and they were inspired to make their very own ‘Green Giant’ in Forest School. Doesn’t he look fabulous!

Dragon Eggs!

Nursery have been reading ‘Zog’, a story about a keen dragon at Dragon School aiming to be the best in his class and win a golden star!

The children went on their very own dragon egg hunt and made a nest for the eggs they found. Mr Roberts was also crowned ‘King of the Yellow Bubble’!

Burlish Park awarded the School Games Mark awards 2019/20

After another fantastic year, Burlish Park Primary have been awarded both a School Games Mark award, recognising their efforts during the autumn and spring terms, and a Virtual School Games Mark award for acknowledging everything they have done to promote physical activity and keep their school community active since lockdown - Congratulations to all staff and pupils at for this amazing achievement!

There have also been some fantastic personal achievements, just look at the results from this week’s Worcestershire Virtual School games:

Louie and Milly, Year 1 and Reception, are winners of their age group for the target throw challenge across the county;

Evie-May, Year 6, won the catch-it challenge with Craig in 3rd place;

Holly and Kian are also superstars with personal best scores!

Qualities of a Good Friend

Our key worker children thought about what qualities a good friend has and labelled their diagrams to show this. As well as thinking how they are a good friend to others, they considered how their own friends have helped them during this year, particularly over the last few months. We found out that friends come in all shapes & sizes!

Seascapes

Year 1 used watercolours to paint seascapes. The children thought carefully about the different colours needed for each section of their picture and considered how they could move their brushes in a way that would show the waves.

Year 5 have been studying the book ‘Why the Whales Came’. They looked at the different types of bird that are mentioned in the book and selected two to focus on. They then used a black pen to create a range of effective zentangle patterns to fill the small sections.

Verb Art

Year 5 also followed a step-by-step video to draw one of the boats from ‘Why the Whales Came’. They looked at different verbs that we could use to describe the movement of the boat and the waves beneath it. They then applied their knowledge of different tenses, including the past progressive and the present perfect, to add verb phrases to our pictures.

Improved Pre-School Provision at Cutnall Green

In recent years Cutnall Green C of E Primary School has seen its pupil numbers increase and to meet the growing needs of our children we have now been able to invest, with the generous support of the Elmley Trust, in a purpose built pre-school building.

Our new pre-school will be officially open from September after some delays due to Covid-19 lockdown. We are extremely proud and excited that this environmentally friendly building will house our pre-schoolers and provide a purposeful environment that will support them to become independent and effective learners. It even has purpose built toilets, a shower and a kitchen area.

As part of the revamp and to ensure that we are maximising the learning environment, we have made significant changes to the outdoor area that will be part of the continuous provision between learning indoors and learning outdoors. Over the summer we will be doing the finishing touches and furnishing the building in readiness for welcoming back our children and welcoming new families into our pre-school. We can’t wait!

Roll-a-Picasso

Key worker children have been having fun and getting creative by playing ‘Roll-a-Picasso’. Simply roll the dice and draw the appropriate parts to create these fantastic portraits in the style of Pablo Picasso.

Archer’s Prayer

Archer in Year 1 has been missing out on his CREW (Collective Worship and Religious Education) role whilst at home so he made a fabulous candle collage to represent the candles that are normally lit in worship assemblies and has written, with the help of his family, this wonderful prayer to share with everyone.

Thank you for teachers who are still guiding us, thank you for parents and adults who are helping us to learn at home. Please help us with our learning in our changed school environment and support those of us who are still learning at home.

We are missing family and friends, lead us to creative ways to stay in touch and bring your comfort to anyone feeling lonely.

Life is a bit different to usual right now, lend us your peace to calm our worries and our fears. Please be with the key workers who are working hard to keep things going and to keep us safe.

Show us what we can do to help others and give us courage to do our best.

Amen.

The Great Witley Garden Transformation

Great Witley’s Red Bubble, made up of pupils from Years 3-5, have been working hard since returning to school to transform our garden area. The children demonstrated amazing team work and perseverance to clear the site, dig and prepare the soil, plant seedlings and nurture them to grow. It’s been hard work but every one of them mucked in and used their green fingers to make a difference. They have planted a wonderful array of fruit and vegetables, including cauliflower, radishes, lettuce, tomatoes and carrots.

Back in the classroom, learning has been inspired by their efforts with their own ‘secret’ garden designs, Haiku and acrostic poetry and diaries of the garden’s progress all being produced. It has been wonderful to see what was once overgrown and under used is now full of life and lush greenery and the children, quite rightly, can’t wait to taste the fruits of their labour!

Transformations have also been taking place around other parts of the school, with our Year 6 team creating a lovely outdoor space next to their classroom, a calming sensory garden being brought to life for all of our children to use for quiet reflection and a marvellous wall mural turning what was once a plain wall in our Reception outdoor area into a burst of colour and life!

I think everyone here would agree that the hard work and efforts by all involved have made our school look incredible. We can’t wait to welcome back more of our Great Witley family so they can see it all too.

Lockdown 2020

Coping with Covid-19 Coronavirus has been intriguing. Many plans have been altered due to this worldwide virus. Going anywhere has been an extreme struggle. At one point, there were very few ways to be outdoors. However, because the majority of people have followed government guidelines, fewer cases are being recorded and therefore fewer deaths are occurring. Hopefully, this violent virus will disappear soon.

Restrictions Many differences have been made during this interesting time. These include social distancing and washing hands more often. Social distancing has been recognised within all shops and areas where people may have to come into close contact. You must keep two metres apart unless you live in the same household as them. You must wash your hands for at least 20 seconds and have to use soap and water when doing this.

School Over the past few weeks, many year groups at Heronswood Primary School in Kidderminster have returned to school in no more than twelve children per pod. Just this week, Year 5 have returned to school. In and out of the school, we have to obey the two metre social distancing rule. This is to make sure that children get their deserved education.

How Covid 19 Changed my Year

Lockdown life in Year 6. The virus. The small virus began in March 2020. When I saw the news about what was happening, I didn’t think it would ever effect my life so much. Little did I know it would affect the nation and the whole world!

A few weeks later, we sadly had to go into lockdown – that was a massive change. At first I was confused and extremely emotional. I had just found out that my SATs, which had been working towards all year, were cancelled and that it was likely I wasn’t going to school for a long, long time.

However, I soon managed to form a ‘new normal’ at home. It was a struggle though as both of my parents still had to work (my mum from home) and I had to help my younger brother with school work. Our teachers had set work on line which every week we tried to complete. It was tricky not having teachers to help us but we tried our best!

What else has kept me busy. Fortunately, I have been able to fill my time and not get too bored: virtual scouts, walks and playing with my friends remotely. I have done lots of art. Also, I have done lots of things I wouldn’t have thought I would do e.g. wearing comfy clothes every single day.

What am I doing now? Overall, lockdown has been OK. Not as bad as I expected but not amazing. I feel my life is more normal – whatever normal is – now I am back at school with my friends and teachers. I am coping well and the teachers are working hard to make the last moments of primary school really special.

10 Days at North Worcester

From about two years ago, we knew that it was starting, the changing face of Worcester - park and ride buses departing. Brick by brick and day by day, we watched it grow up from the floor, finally receiving precious keys, just 10 days before.

So many highs in those first few weeks, the smell of paint still drying, then brave little people through our door, with not a lot of crying! A multitude of topics learnt, books and songs and laughter, outstanding nativity performance, Christmas 10 days after.

Into spring and ‘Outer Space’, a theme with endless limits, practicing our maths and words for twenty daily minutes. Singing, dancing, acting, painting, work in many ways, it’s amazing all that children learn in as little as 10 days!

But then the news crept in our lives, a quiet unseen virus. The threat unknown, a driving wedge, friends not stood beside us. From classes, hot fresh dinners to home-learning and hand-gel, in just 10 days, isolation, our home-made prison cell.

Fast forward weeks of rainbow walks, of box sets, family games night, we are told we can reopen in just under a fortnight. And so we build our bubbles, green and red and blue, our children all come flooding back, their smiles are bold and true.

So now it’s near the end of term, there’s just 10 days to go, it’s been eventful, unpredicted, we’ve just gone with the flow. Enjoy your summer, play together in lots of joyful ways because it all could turn around in only 10 short days.

Mrs Calvert

Bubble Charades

Having returned to school after lockdown, we were aware that the children were missing their friends from the other bubbles so we decided to embrace technology and organise a game of charades between the classrooms using Microsoft Teams.

There were fits of giggles and squeals of delight as the children saw the faces of friends that they had left three months ago. Each group acted out film titles for the other bubbles to guess including Finding Nemo, The Lion King and many more.

This was a wonderful morning to share with the children and one that we will not readily forget.

Year 4 – India Day

Year 4 held a special ‘India’ day for the key worker group and children learning at home. There was dancing, food tasting, drumming and even mehndi patterns. This immersive, hands-on learning experience was a fantastic way for the children to learn about another country and its culture. It was so rewarding to see and hear that children had really enjoyed the work at home too.

Northwick Allotment

Children at Northwick have had an amazing time up at the allotment this term. It has been a real opportunity to offer an alternative curriculum and is a place where children have time to think, explore and learn how to just be in the moment. The experience has helped enormously with well-being during the pandemic and has also provided the opportunity to learn lots of science and DT skills too.

The children worked independently to build a wonderful bug hotel using gathered items including pine cones, twigs, bricks and slate. They really thought about the layers that would be needed for the creatures that would live there and the end result was fantastic! The children also potted and planted a variety of fruits and vegetables including strawberries, kale, raspberries and courgettes to name just a few. They loved watering the crops, although their aim was somewhat off and they often kept spraying anyone nearby!

We are so pleased with the way the allotment is progressing and would like to thank Sue Simpson, our amazing TA, and the Adams family for all their hard work. We really are a lucky school.

Collaborative Art

Miss Deardan’s bubble have created this wonderful collaborative piece of artwork based on the five Rivers’ STARS values.

The children used decoupage and painting to create this mixed media artwork. They had to work one at a time and were extremely patient whilst trying to help each other. The end result is fantastic and it will be proudly displayed at North Worcester Primary Academy.

Though life at St Clement’s is slightly different, it is amazing to finally hear children back in our playgrounds and classrooms having fun and learning. One thing we can be proud of is what resilient and respectful children we work with.

Around the world

The children at St Clement’s, both at home and at school, have enjoyed an around the world trip without needing a passport!

We have spent time visiting Paddington in Peru, the Statue of Liberty in North America and going on Safari in Africa. Where shall we go next?

Lockdown Life

Madi, a Year 3 pupil at St. Clement’s Primary School, has written a fabulous article about her experience of home learning.

The t-shirt Madi is wearing in this photo is one she made following an idea from the MAT suggested weekly topic planning activities, which was to print a design on a t-shirt. This idea tied in nicely with the topic theme of ‘Africa’ as this is where the origin of printing can be traced back to.

Madi wore her t-shirt at the class Zoom meeting and really impressed Mrs Jones with her talent and creativity.

Year 6 Legacy Garden

Year 6 have been redoing our garden at school and it is something we are extremely proud of. We believe it will be a nice place for the children of St Clement’s to reflect in during this time of difficulty. We’re in the process of making a bug hotel and frogilo, so we can enjoy the beauties of nature from our playground. The garden is now ready for our school to do lessons in the upcoming years. Hopefully, our plants and seeds will start growing and science can take place inside our garden. We are very proud of the results and it’s been a wonderful experience.

March 23rd is a day we will all remember for a very long time – the day our world changed! Quarantine brought new beginnings to St Clement’s Pre-school, for the children, the staff and parents and carers alike. Our focus became keeping in touch with our children in new ways such as Zoom stories, Facebook Stories and Busy Feet online. We rose to the Rivers’ challenge with our fabulous online staff song and gave The Wheels on the Bus a ‘Rock Star’ makeover! We found activities for parents to share with their children, suggested ways of taking our pre-school know-how into the children’s homes, shared our worries, concerns and creative solutions and diligently completed staff welfare calls. Everyone has stepped up to this challenge and for 10 weeks this has been the new normal.

However, on June 1st, everything changed and at long last we warmly welcomed some of our children back into pre-school. It was a nervous and exciting day for everyone! In accordance with current guidelines, we set up a new way of access for parents, children and staff, with our 2m markers in place. The children returned happily and have settled in well, despite having learn quickly to cope with greater independence. We feel very lucky to have such understanding and co-operative parents and would like to extend our thanks to each and every one of them as they have really helped to make this a smooth process.

So far this term we have had ‘Ocean Week’, ‘Planting and Growing’ and ‘The Beach and Pirates’. Our home learners continue to work with members of staff and are following the same themes as the children who are attending pre-school. Sadly, there has been no transition for our pre-school children this year; no leavers’ tea party, no presentation of work and no tearful goodbyes, however, it will certainly be a year we will never forget!

We have also been unable to welcome new and prospective parents and carers in for viewings, so we have looked at other ways to promote St Clement’s Pre-School and have created a brand new Facebook page, which runs adjacently to our closed parents’ group. If you would like to take a look, and maybe add a review or cheerful comment, please do so. We have also set up an Instagram page for everyone to follow.

As a final note, I would like to share a few quotes from our fabulous staff who have been, and continue to be, truly amazing:

“Coming in to prepare pre-school for the return of children, helped me to allay my own fears of returning.”

“Everyone has been so positive and happy; it has made it a pleasure to return to a very different looking setting.”

“It’s been so good to get back into a routine and the children have been fantastic.”

“Despite still being at home, the home learning team still feel 100% part of a team.”

And the last quote comes from Mrs Rouse, our fantastic new Pre-School Manager:

“My personal thanks to all the staff for coping through such difficult times and for supporting each other so brilliantly. We are a great team.”

Hub life!

Our children have enjoyed their time in school and have adapted really well to the new ways of working together in school. They have had the opportunity to work with new teachers and adults. They have made a new group of friends from across their year groups and have had their very own 'Play Zones' outside. Years 2, 3 and 4 in the Hub have been following the St Peter’s home-learning package, including learning about Droitwich, Heroes and Under the Sea. Here are some photos of the displays created by the Hub children, including pictures of their new classmates of the creepy crawly kind.

One task was to create a piece of art in the style of Rosie Philpott, a local artist who has produced some wonderful displays for the school. Here is a Rosie original next to the work of Finlay, a budding Year 2 artist.

Pod life!

Our children in EYFS and Year 1 have also enjoyed finding new ways of working, with lots of time for catching up with friends. Children have loved having their own special desks and places to work in school. They have really enjoyed a variety of art projects including painting self-portraits.

Some of our EYFS children have already moved up to The Hide, which is where their classrooms will be next year.

We have loved receiving letters, pictures, videos and messages from our HOME LEARNING CREW. We know from the teachers and adults who are leading our Home Learning Team, that children have had some wonderfully creative ideas to share in their 'Zoom' lessons.

We can't wait to be all back together in school in September. We have missed our big, happy St Peter's family being together, so much.

Message in a bottle

Wychbold First School has thoroughly enjoyed welcoming children back to school in different coloured pods over the last month. The buzz of children learning and socialising again with their peers is a pleasure to experience after such a long period of isolation.

We have been keen to engage our children with writing again, as a lot of feedback we received from parents indicated this was the area they struggled with most during their home-learning journey. For the week commencing the 22nd June, we ran a ‘pirate and mermaid’ topic and all staff planned an immersive ship wreck experience with the children where they were washed up on a desert island. The children loved experiencing the storm, getting wet from the violent waters and then looking around the desert island they found themselves upon and describing what they saw. The children used this experience to write a message in a bottle asking for help. The results were excellent and it has been wonderful to engage our pupils in writing once again.

A huge well done to staff and children at Wychbold. You’ve all coped so well with our new learning environment and have been so resilient and adaptable throughout these difficult times.

Wychbold’s Lockdown Journey

We began by uploading videos of staff reading stories so the children could see the familiar faces of the teachers and teaching assistants. A few of the staff even took on the challenge of reading the whole of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory one chapter at a time and uploaded the videos for the children. This linked with our learning topic that week.

We then created a positive message board for the children to give them a boost and to remind them that we are thinking of them all.

After feedback from parents, we decided to do a video message to encourage parents to keep going with home learning. We wanted to reassure parents that they could use a range of online home learning as well as our school learning.

School Direct Trainees

We are pleased to announce that we have a full cohort of trainee teachers joining us in September for our 2020-21 programme. Our trainees from this year are in the process of securing jobs for September and beyond with five of them coming to work in schools across the trust. Although the lockdown has affected some of their placements, our trainees have been busy doing extra online training and volunteering in our schools for which we are very grateful.

Home Learning

Since half term, a team of staff who were shielded have been working together with the teaching school to put together each week’s MAT home-learning offer. We have focused on one continent per week and have also had a dedicated email address for parents to contact and a Facebook page. “I really like that there are loads of links to look at (I won’t actually look at them, but good to know they are there if I get stuck on something) and more of a pick a suggested box thing, accepting that some days you can achieve more than others! I’m not claiming it’ll mostly get done, but how it is being set out is great.” Parent of Year 1 children “Thank you for providing the home learning across the MAT” Parent of Year 5 child “Thanks for providing the learning materials. We’re looking forward to researching some European foods!” Parent of Year 4 child

Rivers Rainbow Challenge

We were really pleased with the response to our Rivers Family Rainbow Challenge and had some fantastic entries. The challenge consisted of writing a letter to yourself to open in a year’s time, reading in an unusual place, rainbow baking, recreating a book cover or film scene or famous piece of art, rainbow handprints, rainbow nature walk and painting stones. All children who completed the challenge will receive a certificate and badge. Well done to Harry from Burlish who won the baking competition.

Spotlight on Rivers Values

British Values Tree

This fantastic ‘British Values Tree’ is now pride of place by the entrance to the school hall at North Worcester Primary Academy. Created and installed with the help of Mr Smith and Cranham Primary School, it serves as a great reminder every day of the importance of respect and our shared vision.

The Rivers CofE Academy Trust’s vision is encapsulated in the words ‘Love, Learn, Live’.

Our aim is that learners will love learning for life.

While each individual school’s character is celebrated within our

family of schools, we are united through our shared core principles and values.

Our Star Values: Sharing, Trust, Achievement, Respect, Safety
