We meet the second Wednesday of every month in the Homer Brink Library at 7pm

for about an hour

Attending the meeting doesnt mean you have to do any work - thats optional -)

You normally learn a lot of interesting things about the school requirements testing etc from discussion with Mr

Dundon You can come to the meeting even if you arent a PTA member (but

wed sure like it if you were)

Welcome back for another fantastic school year at Homer Brink The PTA has many new

faces on this yearrsquos board and we look forward to working with all the parents and

teachers So much is underway as Natalie Leotta Vice President of Programs lines up

our speakers who will share their knowledge and expertise with you on subjects we

hope will excite you and bring you to the monthly PTA meetings If you have an idea for

a subject you believe to be of interest to parents and teachers Natalie would love to

hear from you

In the coming weeks you will become familiar with Claire Congdon and Melissa Babcock

co-Vice President of Ways and Means as they kick off our fundraising with Great

American Worlds Finest Chocolates and Original Works The gifts magazines and

cookie dough make great holiday gifts for babysitters teachers friends grandparents

aunts uncleshellipeveryone on your list We hope you will take advantage of this one-stop-

shopping and you can even shop online with Great American this year Claire and

Melissa are working hard to keep fundraising ideas fresh and easy We are so grateful

for all your support in making last year a success and we are proud to be part of an

exemplary community willing to help one another and then digging deeper for the

benefit of our children and our school

The PTA is already hard at work on many of our programs such as Fall Festival

not be able to provide these wonderful events

Amy Piester Newsletter Editor will continue to bring Homer Brink news to you in the

monthly newsletter We hope you enjoy all the news from our school and we invite you

to share ideas and stories of interest Amy is also getting ready for the Grade Parent

Meeting on Tuesday September 24th Please mark your calendar it is the

volunteerism of our Grade Parents that ensures the success of so many of our programs

parties staff appreciation events and end of year activities

Donrsquot forget to join the PTA Laurie Ceparano Membership will be working hard for

Homer Brink to bring home the awards for 100 teacher participation and increased

overall membership Please help her achieve these goals by sending in your

membership form

From the Principalrsquos Deskhellip We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2013-14 school year at Homer Brink Everyone has been working hard to prepare the school in anticipation of the studentsrsquo return Our Leadership Club students continued to work at the Spartan Garden and grow fresh produce to compliment the M-EALS Program Your efforts are appreciated Thanks to all involved

Dropping off and picking up children Please consult the handbook for the specific process No children are to be dropped off prior to 840 am If you are dropping your child off after the appropriate starting time please remember to drop them off on the school-side of Pruyne Street When you drop off the child(ren) in the morning it is critical that you pull up to the entrance curb one at a time drop your student off and watch them enter the building Again we are fortunate to have a crossing guard located on Pruyne Street both in the morning and afternoon to assist with supervision during these transition times Please drive with caution when dropping off or picking up students Anytime you enter the building to pick up your child(ren) you will be asked for photo identification Our goal is to maintain the safety of our students at all times If you are interested in becoming a substitute crossing guard please call Mary Bricker with the Town of Union at 786-2950

Curriculum Effective last school year New York State has adopted the Common Core Learning Standards A total of 46 states have adopted these standards For more information please check out httpengagenyorg for the latest updates At the October PTA Meeting Mrs Goosman will give an overview of how to assist your child with the Common Core

Attendance It is imperative that you contact the Main Office (786-8244) if your child is absent or late When your child returns to the school please send an excuse

Lunch Parentsguardians are cordially invited to have lunch with their child(ren) You will need to sign in when entering the building and will be asked to present photo identification For safety reasons we do not have parentsguardians join the student(s) during recess

HomeSchool Communication Communication between the school and home is vital to the success of your child(ren) We will be providing each child with a blue homeschool folder which will serve as a means to assist in keeping you informed of your childrsquos (childrenrsquos) education at Homer Brink Assignments will also be kept in this folder Students in grades 3-5 will have an agenda that they will bring home on a daily basis that will list assignments Please take the time to read through the new agenda It is a good practice to review the assignments with your child(ren) and assist your child(ren) in finding a quiet place for himher to complete hisher homework Please feel free to contact your childrsquoschildrenrsquos teacher as the need arises

Dressing for the weather Please make sure your child(ren) has appropriate clothing for outdoor recess Students should have a sweater or a jacket ready as the colder weather arrives

Please take the opportunity to become a PTA member Our PTA works endlessly to provide outstanding programs for our students We are very fortunate to have a wonderful PTA who always puts children first

Welcome back to another school year As the school year begins so do school adjustments Most children settle

easily into the new routines of classrooms However some children do struggle We need to remember

patience as we begin another school year and get back into the routine The first weeks of school are very

important as they provide a strong foundation for the year of learning ahead

The lives of children can certainly be busy ones A full day of school and after school commitments can be

exciting stimulating and noisy Our fast-paced world is overflowing with technology electronics and exposure

to a large amount of noise Many children of this decade have constant access to television computers cell

phones music video and hand held games Being over-stimulated can be agitating and cause children to

become anxious cranky or upset We need to make sure young children are not overstressed or over scheduled

On the other side the use of these technologies can be educational fun and convenient Part of the joy of

childhood is being involved in a number of experiences and activities and their world is certainly one that

embraces the latest technology Yet equally important is providing moments in which children can enjoy quiet

time to relax and be ldquounder-stimulatedrdquo

Letrsquos help create some balance Letrsquos remember ldquoquiet timerdquo The next time your child says ldquoIrsquom boredrdquo

challenge yourself not to rush in with more activities When children are given the gift of quiet time they have

the opportunity to discover how to be alone without being lonely Instead of ldquoactionsrdquo always coming to them

quiet time may create the opportunity for our children to take action in their own thoughts and create

imaginations

Your Primary Project Team is settling back into school and ready for another school year to begin As we

welcome everyone back we would like to give everyone some background information on the Primary Project

Program at Homer Brink Primary Project is a school-based early intervention and prevention program

designed to enhance school related competencies and reduce social emotional and school adjustment

difficulties in children in grades early kindergarten through second grade Child Associates form a trusting

relationship with the child using play-based strategies Children are typically seen once in a six-day cycle for

30 minutes usually for one semester which is equal to 12-15 sessions Child Associates will see children who

are recommended for Primary Project by teachers and the Primary Project Team

Child Associates receive training through the Childrenrsquos Institute in Rochester New York Each year Child

Associates and Social Workers attend training workshops visit an on-site ldquoModel School for Primary Projectrdquo

to review and share ideas to enhance our program at Homer Brink Yearly we have an on-site visit from the

Childrenrsquos Institute to review our program to help us maintain the high standards of the Primary Project

3 Mile Monster Dash amp frac12 Mile Monster Dash Fun Run

at Lower Highland Park Saturday October 26

th 2013 at 200 and 330pm

In an effort to raise funds for the Homer Brink PTA we have developed two different running courses that we hope will interest runners as well as Homer Brink families The 3 Mile Monster Dash is approximately 3 miles and runs through the wooded trails and paths of Highland Park as well as along the streets of the Park Manor neighborhood The course is for more experienced runners The frac12 Mile Monster Dash Fun Run course will be approximately frac12 miles long on part of the wooded trail of the Town of Unionrsquos Monster Mile in Lower Highland Park This course is more suitable for children as it is shorter and they will not have to run on town roads with traffic Since the trails will be all decorated for Halloween we are encouraging participants and volunteers to come in costumes that are safe to run in and can stand up to mud The course has been wet and muddy in the past so be sure to watch your footing (we are following the path of the tractors and wagons) and dont wear you best sneakers We need lots of volunteers to help keep runners safe and everything functioning smoothly Even if you are not a runner please consider volunteering your time in one of the areas outlined on the volunteer form We need all the help we can get to make this event a success for the students of Homer Brink Elementary If you are interested in PARTICIPATING or VOLUNTEERING for either the 3 Mile Monster Dash or frac12 Mile Monster Dash Fun Run please read the attached registration forms for times and more information or download new forms at httphomerbrinkptamonsterdashyolasitecom If you have any questions feel free to contact Amy Derkowski at aderkowskistnyrrcom for information on the 3 Mile Monster Dash or Amy Piester at apiester4stnyrrcom for information on the frac12 Mile Monster Dash Fun Run Be sure to put ldquoMonster Dashrdquo in the subject line We hope to see as many Homer Brink Families as possible in the Park on Race Day October 26th The Town of Union will also be hosting their Family Fun Day with pumpkin carving and Hay Rides

finishes by the pavilions at Lower Highland Park The course

will be on the Town of Unionrsquos Monster Mile decorated trails and along the perimeter of the Park Manor neighborhood Please dress in costumes that are safe for racing Race Fee $20 before October 18 2013 with t-shirt $12 before October 18 2013 without t-shirt

The Homer Brink Yearbook is made up of 3 parts Individual Class portrait pages

Your childrsquos picture from Fall Picture Day or Fall Picture Make-Up Day is used

Pictures from Spring Picture Day cannot be used due to yearbook deadlines

Pictures from other professional photographers cannot be used due to copyright protections

Club Pictures

Group photos will be taken later in the year for all clubs and musical groups

Information will be sent home in a few months about Club Picture Day

Over 30 pages of candid collage pages will be in the yearbook from your favorite events
