SACE & VET INFO EVENING/ MIDDLE SCHOOL

Middle SchoolTerm 3 already! Just an update on some of our Term 2 achievements and our directions for Term 3.

At the end of the Term all Year 8 and 9 students participated in the end of semester Roundtable presentations. Students had time in Pathways, English and HASS lessons to reflect on their learning throughout the semester. They focused on skills in literacy, numeracy and practical tasks. By articulating these skills, they learnt the value of their transferability to other subjects and what they needed to do to improve their learning outcomes. There were some very impressive presentations given and the majority of students were organised and well prepared. The middle school team will now review the project to ensure it continues to be relevant and valuable to all students.

The Year 10 cohort has just embarked on the start of their SACE journey. Each student has commenced work on their Personal Learning Plan

(PLP). This is a compulsory Stage 1 subject that all students must complete with a C grade in order to achieve their senior school certificate. It gives students the opportunity to investigate future career pathways, to set both personal and learning goals and to develop their reflection and evaluation skills. The skills and dispositions they develop through their study of the PLP will be vital to the rest of their SACE study and success in their future pathway. In Week 2 we will celebrate the success of students across the whole school with an assembly to recognise those students who have achieved amazing results in their academic studies. The following Middle School students were congratulated for commitment to study as well as academic excellence: Year 8Academic Excellence:• Dorsa Babaqazviny• Rosemarie FerminCommitment to Study:• Sankalp Muralikumar• Daniel Pescud

Year 10 and Year 11 SACE and VET Parent and Student Information Evening

Tuesday 14th August5:30pm-6:30pm

Senior Study Centre

As a parent, it can be confusing and difficult trying to navigate your way through the SACE as well as VET options. Both areas can be overwhelming and it is not unusual for parents to feel less confident than they would like to be in supporting their children with selecting subjects in the final years of schooling and in guiding them into a positive post-school pathway. To help you to develop your understanding and to answer any questions or concerns that you may have, we invite you to attend our SACE and VET Information Evening for Year 10 and Year 11 students and their parents. This evening is an important component of preparation of Course Counselling and Subject Selection which will be in Week 7 of this term. The first part of the evening is SACE information. This will provide an overview of SACE requirements including the “credits” students need to achieve at Stage 1 and 2, compulsory elements, achieving an ATAR and decision making about subject choices. This is particularly relevant for parents who are new to SACE.The second part of the evening relates to VET and is relevant to students and parents who are considering a VET course as part of their SACE program. There are many advantages of undertaking a VET program at Hamilton and we are proud to be able to offer our students an extensive range of VET certificate courses. These are industry specific and nationally recognised programs that provide credits toward SACE Stage 1 and/or Stage 2. In addition, VET can also provide a direct pathway into an apprenticeship, further training or employment. Our VET courses are free of charge to Hamilton students, and this potentially saves families considerable expense. Many of our students undertake VET as part of their SACE program. We look forward to seeing you on this important evening.

FarewellWe sadly farewelled three Year 10 International students at the end of Term 2. Kevin and Jarrod Jiang were members of our first ISEC class at Hamilton and have been at the College 18 months. They leave for a new adventure in Sydney where they will complete their secondary education. Mathilda Turin (centre) has also returned to Lucrene, Switzerland. Mathilda first came to Hamilton in 2017 when she stayed for three weeks, whilst her parents were holidaying in Australia. She loved our school so much that she returned a year later to study for 6 months. We wish all three students the best for their future studies.

Australian StudiesOn Wednesday of Week 10 last Term, the ISEC class visited the Living Kaurna Centre at Waraparinga as part of their Australian Studies course and to also celebrate NAIDOC Week. The students were involved in a walking tour of the site, examining cultural places of significance,

learning about bush tucker and Kaurna cultural traditions. In the afternoon the class and teaching staff were involved in an Aboriginal art workshop where they learned about dot painting, and using Aboriginal symbols to communicate a message. A great day was enjoyed by all.

NAIDOC WeekOnce again we are hosting two Masters of Social Work students from Flinders University in Semester 2. John and Ben helped out with the BBQ for NAIDOC week at the end of last term. John is working in Student Services with Mr Taylor where he will help develop programs for boys at our College. Ben is working with Mr Lobban and members of Team International to provide well-being programs for our International students. John and Ben attend the College four days each week and will be on placement at Hamilton until the end of the school year.

Malcolm Lobban,Assistant Principal,

OBEC IES Thai Partnership Program During the month of June our College was visited by a group including 10 Thai Principals and some very high ranking officials from the Office of Basic Education Commision in Thailand. Mrs Kourbelis conducted a tour of the HSC International Centre, the Space Centre and other classrooms. Dr Bhayhabhong pictured in the photo, stayed on in our College for 2 weeks to observe lessons, speak with staff and learn more about the daily operations of Hamilton Secondary College.

In the July school holidays, Mrs Flora Botting our International Students Program Manager travelled with a team of teachers from IES DFE schools to Bangkok to attend a meeting with

OBEC and Australian Embassy officials. She was able to visit our partner school in the north eastern city of Khon Kaen, Thailand for 8 days and she received the warmest of welcomes. Kaennakhon Witthayalai School is an award winning STEM specialist school with excellent facilities. Mrs Botting spoke at an early morning assembly of 4,300 students and 290 staff. She met every day with the Principal Dr Xata and the school executive administration team and spoke at several faculty meetings with many teachers. Mrs Botting visited lots of classrooms to talk with students from Year 7 to 12 about living and studying in Australia. She also met with parents and students who are considering applications for coming to school in Australia. During this time the Wild Boars soccer team were rescued from the flooded cave. KNW School was so grateful of the Australian efforts that they presented Mrs Botting with a gift and a letter to give to Dr Richard Harris in Adelaide. Mrs Botting will have the honour to meet Dr Harris and deliver the gift next week. Mrs Botting was taken on a visit

to the Regional Director’s office in Khon Kaen with the purpose to further cement a partnership arrangement of teacher training and a student study tour between our two schools. Such learning exchanges are invaluable for our teachers and students in gaining global perspectives and understanding of Thai culture. As an example in this photo you can see that all teachers were wearing yellow to celebrate the King’s birthday. From exchanges, we can also learn more about how to meet the needs and expectations of International students and their families. Team International at HSC are now in the process of planning a STEM partnership program with KNW School for 2019.

International

In this photo, Dr Richard Harris graciously accepts some gifts from our partner school in Khon Kaen, Thailand. These were given in recognition of his skilled effort in the Cave Rescue of the Wild Boar Soccer Team. Mrs Flora Botting was very honoured to deliver these items, along with a lovely video tribute from the staff of Kaennakhonwitthayalai School when she returned from Thailand.

SACE/ Year 12/ Sports/ PISASACE / Year 12I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Annasofia Hamilton and I am the new SACE/Senior School Coordinator for the remainder of 2018, as Tamara Seaman has taken on the Wellbeing role.In my role, I will be working closely with students and families to ensure that students are supported in meeting SACE requirements. Term 3 is a busy one for Year 12s as it is the last full term students have before exams in November. It is critical that students make the most of their study time and also take the opportunity to work with their teachers to finalise the content for their subjects. Most subjects will have an externally marked Investigation which will need to be submitted to the SACE Board in October. These Investigations are weighted at 30% of the final grade for Stage 2 subjects, so it is imperative that students work consistently and collaborate with their teachers to draft these before the final submission date.Students are reminded to use the Senior Study Centre during their study lessons and to ensure that they are working in a quiet and sustained manner in this area. Year 12 students should also be using their Due Dates Planner to organise their time and also to provide a visual reminder of how to schedule their time. Time management is a critical skill, and it is important to balance school, part time work commitments and out of school activities such as sports. If students need assistance with managing their time, they should seek guidance from their Year 12 Case Mentors as the first port of call, or come and see me in the Senior Study Centre. If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s progress, please contact their Case Mentor via an email or phone call to the front office, who will be happy to forward your enquiry to the appropriate person. For SACE matters, I can be contacted via a phone call to the front office also.I am excited to take on this new opportunity and look forward to working with you for the remainder of 2018.

Annasofia HamiltonSACE / Senior School Coordinator

The Hamilton Gold Open Boys Basketball Team have qualified for the State Knock Out Grand Final Series as well as the Grand Final for the local after school competition. The team is made up of Kristian Garin, Jonathon Mitchell, James Sampson, Daniel Newby, Luke Brown, William Goulding, Jangar Teah, Raijon Gurd and Gereltur Turbat. They have performed at the highest level in both competitions and are to be commended for their team play, commitment and resilience which has led to the success of this season.

PISAThis term a random sample of 15 year old students at the College will be given an assessment through PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) on the 21st of August. This is an assessment that measures how well 15 year olds are prepared to use the skills and knowledge in particular areas to meet real life challenges. Students will spend around 3¾ hours completing a computer-based assessment, including answering questions in one or more of the assessment domains (reading, mathematics, science, global competence and financial literacy), and answering questions about their home background, aspects of students’ lives, such as their attitudes and motivation towards learning, availability and use of ICT and their preparation for their future career. The assessment time also includes administration time and breaks. All of the results are used to evaluate progress towards the Educational Goals for young Australians. All information published by ACER regarding PISA in the public domain is de-identified and aggregated – there is no identification of students and the participating schools.Letters will be sent home to the students who have been selected to take part in the assessment in Week 2 of the school term. It is expected that all of the students who have been selected will take part in the assessment.

Although this is an open competition, the team consists of only Year 8, 9 and 10 students, playing against teams that are in Year 11 and 12. This is a great achievement as every game the girls are eager to play and show no signs of feeling intimidated as they are always encouraging towards each other. Furthermore, half of the team are from our International program, whom had never even heard of the sport before. It has been an absolute joy watching the international students learn and play such an iconic Australian sport. Hats off to the Hamilton students who have helped the new players learn and play the sport, showing leadership and teamwork skills. The girls have 3 games to go, although we haven’t won yet, this may be our time to shine and at the end of the competition, the girls will walk away with their heads held high and blossoming new friendships.Team Coach: Tash Bamford

Aboriginal EducationAt the end of Term 2 the whole school came together to recognise and celebrate NAIDOC Week. Although official celebrations did not start until Sunday 8 July and finished up on 15 July, it was important for us all to acknowledge and understand the great contributions and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. To get the conversation started, our two new social work students and one of our most dedicated students Ethan Glover-Lindsay, cooked up some kangaroo sausages on the BBQ and served them to our very appreciative staff and student cohort. It was great to see so many students enjoying the food and to hear them talking about what NAIDOC Week was all about.

As mentioned in our last newsletter, we were so proud and thankful to the staff and students who donated baby and toddler goods to the local organisation “Dreamtime Bags” as part of Reconciliation Week celebrations. Oliver Brownsey who founded the organisation also said “A huge thank you to the lovely staff and students at Hamilton Secondary College who donated all these lovely goods as part of their Reconciliation Week events. This will help us so much in packing more baby bags”.

During the holidays, our very talented Ricky O’Louglin, Year 11, travelled to Melbourne with the Aboriginal AFL Academy to play an exchange game against Parkdale Secondary College and participate in a range of activities related to career choices and sport. The team had the opportunity to attend the Bombers VS Collingwood game at the MCG and also were in the audience for an episode of “AFL 360”. We were so proud to hear that Ricky was awarded best player during the exchange game and the team won the match despite very cold conditions.

Please see the photos of Ricky representing us in Melbourne and Power Cup alongside Isaiah Brown, Phoenix Spicer, Sonny Goldsmith and Flayme Rollins from Year 10.

Finally, this term we will also welcome our new Aboriginal Community Education Officer who will work closely with our students and their families to ensure their continued success. We are looking forward to expanding the team and giving more support to all students.

Hi everyone! My name is Henry Lee and I am the new Pastoral Care Worker at Hamilton Secondary College. I look forward to carrying out my role as Pastoral Care Worker in supporting the wellbeing of students, their families and staff members; all to help promote a healthy and positive learning environment at Hamilton Secondary College. My passion is found in helping youths reach their full potential and helping them as they navigate through secondary school life. Together with the Wellbeing Team, I hope to support students in developing social skills and other key attributes such as confidence, team work and positive relationship building.

A bit about myself, I have a background of a combined Bachelor degree in Behavioural Science and Laws and Legal Practice. I also studied Theology and received a Diploma from Tabor College. Over the past 10 years, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with youths and have been privileged to see many of them step into leadership and contributory roles in their places of study, work and church. I am married to my beautiful wife, Amanda and together we have a bouncy little boy named Josiah. He is almost 18 months old and is full of energy! As for interests, I enjoy a good bit of tennis, spending time with my family, going to the movies and tucking into a good ol’ packet of Tim Tams.

Hamilton UnitThe first week of Term 3 has been very busy for many of the students in the Unit. Many students participated in a week long swimming block of daily 1 ½ hour lessons, which was held in Week 1. The focus of the lessons was developing students’ skills and understandings about water safety. Students had to participate in a variety of activities including: rescue skills, treading water, underwater skills and survival scenarios. They had to demonstrate that they could work effectively with others, could use PFD (Personal Floatation Devices) effectively and explore, evaluate and make sound decisions about their own safety and the safety of others. The students were very tired at the end of the week but enjoyed the swimming block and were proud of their achievement. They received a certificate as a record of their development. In Week 2, students who are in the process of transitioning from school to work will begin a work placement at Bedford. This programme will run during Semester 2 each Friday. Students will spend the day at Bedford, complete WHS induction, and experience what it is like to be a part of a work environment and have the opportunity to develop the skills needed to become a successful employee on leaving school. When students return to school they will reflect on their experience which will form part of their Research Project.
