June 2018
FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
Dear members and friends of the German Canadian Club,
June is upon us and regardless of the type of weather, the activity level at the German Canadian Club has
increased in leaps and bounds. The German Canadian FC began its full summer program on May 18th and
games will be played almost every day of the week. The Green/White Tennis Club has been extremely active
since May 10th. Regardless of the sometimes chilly evenings, staunch tennis enthusiasts have visited the well-
maintained clay courts and enjoyed their tennis “fix”.
Once the warmer weather arrived it was time to give our entire facility a Spring cleaning. The German
Canadian FC and their volunteers came to the Club on May 12th and spent the entire morning into the
afternoon giving our great facility an intense clean up. Inside the Clubhouse Marlene Hoche-Davidson, Sylvia
Breuninger and Pam Wulff cleaned and then beautifully decorated the Beverage Room for the upcoming
World Cup. A sincere thanks to Cheryl Ellyatt and Katherine Lomas, members of the GCFC, for donating
flowers to the beautification of our facility.
Our largest fundraising event of the year begins on June 14th. THE 2018 WORLD CUP!! This year it will be held
in Russia and Germany will be doing their best to defend their title. Our event, this year, is sponsored by
Hacker Pschorr, Sleemans and Erdinger Breweries. There will be promos and prizes to be won. There will be a
number of main prizes that you may be lucky enough to win at our draw after the final game on July 15th. All
games shown at the Club will be posted in the newsletter and on our website. Come and enjoy the games in
our 2 main viewing rooms. The more intimate Beverage Room or the large main hall with its giant HD
projection screen.
As a final note, I encourage all our members, their families and their friends to take the time to visit our Club
during the upcoming summer months. There is always something that you may enjoy.

Many Hearts, One Melody
(Submitted by Paul Knauer on behalf of the Lyra Choir)
Two things to be enjoyed in life are music and friendship; such is our experience in the Lyra Choir. We are
some thirty individuals with various backgrounds, but when we gather on Monday nights for our rehearsals,
we sing in one accord, making melody in our hearts.
As we prepare the final touches to our repertoire of songs for our June 2nd Concert at the Heidelberg Club in
St. Catharine’s, we take joy and pride in another successful year well done. We brushed up on old favorites
we love to sing, and we learned a few new pieces that challenged us to bring our best to every rehearsal and
presentation. First, we sing for the joy of singing, of making beautiful harmony one with another. Alvin
Reimer, our much loved and respected conductor, always seems to have a
way of bringing out the best in us, both with his musical skills, vast
experience and great sense of humour. Yes, we work hard at rehearsals,
focus well (for the most part) and certainly have much fun and light-
heartedness when such spontaneity is appropriate to keep it all gratifying
and pleasurable experiences.
We look forward to final concert on June 2 in St. Catherine’s where we
will join in with the host choir, the Heidelberg-Rheingold Singers, the
Transylvania Choir from Kitchener, and the Singgemeinschaft Choir, visiting from Calgary. What a wonder-
ful event this will be! What an inspirational climax of music and song as we finish this season and take a well
-deserved break for the summer.
As you may be aware, we have had new leadership in our
Choir Board. Following many dedicated years of excellent ser-
vice, both Hans Sandker, as President of the Lyra Choir, and
Inge Schirmer, as Vice-President, have stepped down from
their board responsibilities. We are forever grateful for their
long-standing commitment, practical leadership, and positive
passion they have exemplified for us. Please take a moment to
express your own personal words of appreciation to Hans and
Inge for their contributions, not only to the choir but to the
entire German Canadian Club.

More will be shared in the fall issues of the newsletter, how-
ever, just to let you know, our new Lyra Choir President is
Kathy Wodrich, and the Vice-President is Paul Knauer. We
wish them great success as the years unfold; Hans’s and
Inge’s “shoes of leadership” will be difficult to fill.
A final word goes to you, our ongoing supporters for the Lyra
Choir. We are mindful that as we prepare for our concerts,
the icing on the cake is in reality our faithful supporters –
you! We thank you for being our audience. Your presence at our
concerts is much appreciated and we are always grateful for your enthusiastic and positive feedback. Have a
great summer. Enjoy family and friends. Be safe. We’ll get together again in the fall and look forward to
more music, friendship and the making of pleasant memories.
Lyra Choir in full form; fun and forte!
