Febuary 2013 NEWSLETTER This Newsletter was kindly printed by Harcourts Kingborough PRESIDENT’S REPORT Men’s pennant came to an early and abrupt ending on Saturday with the completion of the last round of rostered matches. Unfortunately, none of our teams was able to make the finals but put in credita- ble enough performances throughout the year to avoid relegation. Division 1 finished 8 th , 2R and 3 finished 6 th and Div 3R came 9 th . With the loss of players in the early part of the year and the withdrawal of our lowest team, 3R became the “chopping block” team and, although they had many changes almost every week, they still managed to win enough games to avoid relegation. Well done everyone! Hopefully next year will be a lot better year! On a brighter note, our midweek teams in Divisions 1, 3 and 4, have all made the finals in this the first year of a “finals four” situation for midweek pennant. This Wednesday, Division 1 will be at Sandy Bay , Division 3 will be at Buckingham and Division 4 Blue will be at home against Beltana in the first semi finals. Good luck and good bowling to all those participating. Our ladies pennant teams are faring much better! With only two rounds remaining, all four divisions are in the top four. Good bowling for the next two weeks ladies, as you all deserve an opportunity to participate in the finals. After the Delegates Meeting held last Monday at Buckingham, it appears that Bowls Tasmania, aided by the regional bodies, is set to turn pennant bowls upside down. It is planned to make Division 1 Men’s Pennant 3 rinks only from 2013-14. With no support at all from bowls clubs in the south or the north west , and with little support from those in the north, Bowls Tasmania is intent on forcing this condition into regional pennant competitions regardless of the consequences. The other implementation that looks to be imposed on regions regardless is non-gender specific pennant for both men and women. This would enable any of the ladies to make themselves available for Saturday pennant and likewise any of the men to make themselves available for Thursday pen- nant. This may be subject to certain rules imposed by Bowls Tasmania South but what rules and when they would be imposed at this stage is not clear but, from past performances, may be very well im- plemented well after the horse has bolted! Non-gender specific pennant was introduced in Victoria a few years ago and has recently been aban- doned (for whatever reason). However, maybe it had something to do with a division 3 ladies pen- nant final being won by a team consisting of 10 men and 2 women! I am at a loss as to how we can stop this madness with what appears to be little support from the Bowls Tasmania South executive. If you have any thoughts on this matter, I would be pleased to hear them. Allen Sculthorpe, President A very big thankyou to the 15 members who formed a working bee last Sunday and installed the insulation in the Indoor Bowls Centre. Another working bee is planned for 17 March to install the panelling which will provide the fin- ishing touches to the building and improve the amenities so do please come along and pitch in.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Men’s pennant came to an early and abrupt ending on Saturday with the completion of the last round

of rostered matches. Unfortunately, none of our teams was able to make the finals but put in credita-

ble enough performances throughout the year to avoid relegation.

Division 1 finished 8th, 2R and 3 finished 6th and Div 3R came 9th. With the loss of players in the early

part of the year and the withdrawal of our lowest team, 3R became the “chopping block” team and,

although they had many changes almost every week, they still managed to win enough games to

avoid relegation. Well done everyone! Hopefully next year will be a lot better year!

Bay , Division 3 will be at Buckingham and Division 4 Blue will be at home against Beltana in the first

semi finals. Good luck and good bowling to all those participating.

Our ladies pennant teams are faring much better! With only two rounds remaining, all four divisions

are in the top four. Good bowling for the next two weeks ladies, as you all deserve an opportunity to

participate in the finals.

After the Delegates Meeting held last Monday at Buckingham, it appears that Bowls Tasmania, aided

by the regional bodies, is set to turn pennant bowls upside down. It is planned to make Division 1

Men’s Pennant 3 rinks only from 2013-14. With no support at all from bowls clubs in the south or the

north west , and with little support from those in the north, Bowls Tasmania is intent on forcing this

condition into regional pennant competitions regardless of the consequences.

for Saturday pennant and likewise any of the men to make themselves available for Thursday pen-

nant. This may be subject to certain rules imposed by Bowls Tasmania South but what rules and when

they would be imposed at this stage is not clear but, from past performances, may be very well im-

plemented well after the horse has bolted!

Non-gender specific pennant was introduced in Victoria a few years ago and has recently been aban-

doned (for whatever reason). However, maybe it had something to do with a division 3 ladies pen-

nant final being won by a team consisting of 10 men and 2 women!

them.

A very big thankyou to the 15 members who formed a working bee last Sunday and installed the

insulation in the Indoor Bowls Centre.

Another working bee is planned for 17 March to install the panelling which will provide the fin-

ishing touches to the building and improve the amenities so do please come along and pitch in.

brilliant year of achieve-

ments. Bravo!

son—2 & Jeff Jackson—lead.

Jason Fowler and Tony Clark were selected to play in the Southern Team of Peter Bannister (Derwent

City) - skip, Tony Clark—3, Jason Fowler—2 and Liam O’Brian (Buckingham) as lead. They went down in the morning

game against the State team and were narrowly beaten by the North West in the afternoon. So narrow was it that they were

five up on the last end when the opposition drew the shot to win by 1. [We all know how cruel a game it is ].

Both players enjoyed the day playing good bowls in tricky conditions. The journey up North was

made easier with the addition of Mark (the Man) Watterson as Navigator!!

…. yes he is too young to com-

pete!!! But what a champ in the

making!

2013 Open. [The youngsters are on top!]

Jackaroo Lisa Phillips has continued her sensational roll at this year's $136,000 Australian Open by add-ing yet another national title to her ever-growing résumé, capturing the women's triples silverware to ac-company the coveted singles crown she snared. The 19 year-old Clayton spearhead guided her makeshift triples combination of former Under-15 world champion Samantha Shannahan and fellow Jackaroo Claire Turley (previously Duke) through a minefield of contenders over the past two weeks to clinch the title, having only secured their spot in the main draw via the 'last chance qualifying'.

In the men's pairs gold medal decider, Melbourne's comeback kings, former one-test cap Australian representative Russel Green Jnr and 19 year-old Jackaroo Dylan Fisher have hooked themselves a share of the $136,000 prize money during a clash of the Victorians. The duo had built a reputation over of the week for clawing back from the brink of defeat, withstanding first set thrashings to pre-vail in the tie-break, and their final showdown against Moonee Ponds' Adam Galloway and Mark Jacobsen, a 1998 Common-wealth Games gold medallist, proved no different.

Results: MEN’S Singles: Aaron Wilson defeated Matthew Ayres. Pairs: D. Fisher & R. Green Jnr defeated A. Galloway & M. Jacobsen. Triples: T. Crammon, D. Caldwell & P. Bobrige defeated M. O’Laughlin, Z. Trbrara & N. Burkett.

WOMEN’S Singles: Lisa Phillips defeated Karen Murphy. Pairs: K. Cottrell & L. Armitage defeated C. Williams & J. Bush. Tri-ples: S. Shannahan, C. Turley & L. Phillips defeated K. Poile, J. McMenaman & N. Shortis.

OVER 60’S Men’s Pairs: E. Azopardi & B. Ferguson defeated P. Morris & I. Warner. Women’s Pairs: C. Grimes & M. Spizer

defeated C. Pavlov & S. McKenzie. MIXED PAIRS: F. Clarke & S. Tong defeated A. Haevecker & R. Wilson.

National News

Interesting information from the 2010 National Bowls Census.

514,486 participants playing bowls in Australia

158,548 pennant; 186,738 in other competitions for members;

165,594 in social, corporate and school competitions and programs.

60-70 years is the largest age group—42%, 75+ - 24%, 40-59—22%, 40 under—12%.

59.5% were in country regions although these country regions accommodate just 38.6% of Australian residents.

Note that 24% of players in Australia

are over 75 years of age so there’s

lots of life in lawn bowlers!

Four year old JETT Simmons from Frankston

South probably weighs as much as the adult size

4 bowls he plays with. His father Todd and 18

year old brother Dylan complete the bowling pic-

ture.

"He's probably had 100 people watching and clap-

ping [at Bendigo] as he mucks around with his older

brother," mother Holly Simmons said. "He's a bit of a

show pony. He really gets the crowd going."

A profile of Lawn Bowlers done by the Australian Sports Commission (date unknown at ausports.gov.au) noted that:

75% of bowlers play only this one sport, of those who do participate in other sports golf is the most popular followed

by carpet bowls, tennis & darts;

60% are men, 39% women [yes I know—Juniors :)]

Over 90% are aged 45 or over, 53% are aged 65 or over

Average participation rate is 2.2% of the population & Tasmania & most other states fall into this average with South

Australia the highest at 2.7% and ACT & NT lowest at 1.4 and 1% respectively.

87% of bowlers are Australian born

66% are not in the workforce

Australia Day details as promised with lots of well deserved praise spread far & wide

A massive $1,300 was raised on the day for the Bushfire Appeal and reflects the generosity of our mem-bers. There were a great many prizes donated by businesses and members to ensure plenty of participation

in the raffles and auction so there are many thanks to go to many.

A very big thankyou to Norma Lovell, Craig Griggs, Jason Fowler and Malcolm Cox who did a great job

organising this impromptu day that was well attended by the Club faithful, and to Bill Reeves for doing the BBQ.

Next comes special thanks to Michael Harris who won the bidding on a bowls shirt signed by Steve Glasson and Kelvin Kerkow. Our thanks go to these two celebrity players for their kind donation of the shirt & Jason

Fowler for requesting it. Michael Harris immediately gave the shirt to the Club so it could be framed and put

on the wall for all to enjoy.

Updates from the Bowls Tasmania South Delegates Meeting 25 Feb.

Numbers are down in competitions.

Men’s teams will become 12 instead of 16. Ten teams per Division. Men still play 25 ends and start @ 1pm.

No pennant matches to be played after 18 December = a 3 week break.

Men cannot play in the finals of Ladies Pennant.

Winter coaching will be available at Beltana from 1st Sunday in May: Ladies @ 12:00, Men @ 3pm. (will advise further on

this)

The Panel will send coaches anytime anywhere = any Club that asks for it.

Morning teas—it is up to the Clubs to supply coffee, tea & biscuits if they wish.

MONASH UNIVERSITY ACCIDENT RESEARCH CENTRE June 2002 Report on

injuries out of lawn bowls noted that of the 80,000 playing (in Vic) there were

only 29 lawn bowl injury cases recorded, 76% of these were women (when

they only comprise 390% of participants). 59% of the injuries were due to falls

and of these 35% were sprains & strains, 35% fracture’s & 23% cuts and bruis-

es.

It’s easy to understand why health professionals recommend lawn

bowls as a sport for older people because it provides low impact,

therapeutic exercise in a social and supportive atmosphere.

INCREASING MEMBERSHIP & PROMOTING THE CLUB is a hot topic for most Clubs.

At henselite.com.au/hints/club_promotion you can find many rele-

vant links to related websites + many case studies of what other

Clubs in Australia have done and Bowls Australia and the Australi-

an Sports Commission have published ‘A Perfect Delivery’ as a

guide to marketing bowls. Anyone with a bit of time on their

hands???

The Club warmly welcomes new

members this month:

Full: Keith Palmer, Shane Stanfield,

Jarrod Long.

Social: Dwayne Everett Smith,

Simon Salter

Our best wishes for a quick

recovery go to Melody Firth

who had a fall while up NW

and fractured her vertebrae as

well as broke her left wrist put-

ting her out of action for the

rest of the season.

Further special thanks go to Craig and Aaron Griggs who bought a shirt signed by the Australian team at an online auction (which was also to benefit the bushfire victims). Craig & Aaron also gave the shirt to the Club
