< 50th anniversary of sister city relations with Odessa >Yokohama and Odessa have been sister cities since July 1965. Odessa is a historical harbour city in southern

Ukraine, famous as a centre of commerce and industry, but also for its culture and arts. Yokohama and Odessa have more in common: both cities were rebuilt as international port cities after being destroyed by war. For the last 50 years, Yokohama and Odessa have been cooperating in many fields, such as culture, sports and healthcare. In 2001, four medical doctors from Odessa visited Yokohama and engaged in various exchange activities. The Yokohama Odessa Friendship Committee is very actively engaged in citizens’ exchange, exchanging delegations between the two sister cities, and supporting Japanese language education in Odessa. After the Great East Japan Earthquake 2011, the citizens of Odessa sent a touching letter of encouragement to Yokohama, which was accompanied by a donation.

This year also marks the 50th anniversary of sister city relations between Yokohama and three other cities: Mumbai (India), Manila (Philippines) and Vancouver (Canada).
