Lam Choi-yuen, a year-two student of Associate in Design (Advertising Design), won a Grand Prize (Camera Category–

PolyU Scenery) in the PolyPassion Photo Contest organised by the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations in celebration of the 80th Anniversary of PolyU and the opening of the Alumni Atrium.

Choi-yuen said smilingly that she participated in the contest because her mobile phone was broken and one of the prizes was a cell phone. In the end, Choi-yuen received her dream prize at the opening ceremony of the Alumni Atrium at the end of November 2016.

As a design student, Choi-yuen particularly likes the white, modern, and cruise-shaped outlook of the Jockey Club Innovation Tower designed by the late Dame Zaha Hadid, the renowned “Queen of the Curve” architect. Choi-yuen said, “I wanted to photograph the Innovation Tower, but my mobile was broken. Thus, I could only borrow a camera from my HKCC teacher and participate in the camera category. I had taken several pictures of the tower from different angles, but they were not very impressive. Then, I accidentally saw a water reflection of the tower with red bricks on the floor. Since red bricks are a signature of PolyU, so I captured the image and named it ‘My Mirage’.”

The panel of judges concurred with the unique visual sensation of Choi-yuen. Her masterpiece was exhibited at the Gallery of the Alumni Atrium and the Foyer Gallery of the Jockey Club Innovation Tower.

Four fresh graduates of Associate in Language and Culture won the SOJLEHK Group Project Award 2015/16 with a

research paper studying the development of the dubbing industry in Japan and Hong Kong. Beating all participating teams from over 20 tertiary education institutions, the HKCC team delightedly received their award from Mr Kuninori Matsuda, an adjudicator of the competition and Ambassador and Consul-General of the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, on 24 September 2016.

Lai Chi-yi, a member of the winning team along with Kong Ka-wai, Lai Tsz-hong and Wong Ching-wang, pointed out that voice-over artists in Japan’s thriving seiyuu (i.e. dubbing) industry enjoy a high status in society. Some of them are even more famous than actors. In contrast, Cantonese voice-over artists in Hong Kong receive less attention. She hoped that more resources could be allocated to nurturing talents for the local dubbing industry so as to promote Hong Kong’s cultural and creative industries.

“We needed to use Japanese to write our report and present our findings to judges. It’s quite challenging. However, with the solid foundation laid by four Japanese subjects I took in HKCC, I became confident to show my Japanese speaking skills in front of Mr Matsuda” said Chi-yi.

Led by Vietnam experts and HKCC lecturers, 24 students from Associate in Business (Tourism Management), Associate in Business (Hotel Management), and Higher Diploma in Event Management

embarked on a service and cultural exploration tour to Da Nang, Vietnam from 15 to 20 January 2017.

A heavy downpour in the beginning of the trip did not dampen students’ enthusiasm when they visited the Imperial City of Hue, a world cultural heritage. “I was not interested in topics about history and culture before the trip. However, I started to know how to appreciate them after listening to our tourist guide,” Lee Zi-yun, one of the participants, said. “I felt wonderful when seeing the historic architecture in person,” another participant Fung Ka-yiu said.

The students also gained a lot from two-day voluntary work in an orphanage. They were surprised to find that the children there were far more optimistic than they thought. Despite what they had lost, the children learned to value what they have.

The participating students took part in all activities with enthusiasm and unity, and helped each other throughout the trip. They have become close learning partners after returning to Hong Kong.

“Being shortlisted as the top 20 and awarded the Judges’ Commendation in the ACCA Hong Kong Business

Competition 2016 was definitely an incredible and invaluable experience!” said Yeung Hoi-ching, a year-two student of Associate in Business (Finance). With a total of over 400 teams (52 from HKCC) in this competition in which the degree and sub-degree categories were combined into one, it was undoubtedly a great recognition for Hoi-ching and her three teammates Cheung Yi-ching, Lee Yee-ki, and Lo Tsz-ching.

The competition, held on 18 February 2017, required the contestants to submit a proposal to help a social enterprise to sustain its operation in the short and long run. Addressing the theme of “Youth Catalysts in Driving Social Enterprise Excellence”, Hoi-ching and her teammates chose “Cook1Cook,” a social enterprise which helps housewives to share recipes online in order to earn extra money for their families. “The most valuable part of this competition was that it allowed us to apply our financial and accounting knowledge learned from textbooks. With coaching from ACCA, we wrote and perfected our proposal and financial statement to sustain the business of the social entreprise by raising its income and lowering its expenditure, taking into consideration many factors it might face in real life. The experience was both practical and rewarding,” said Hoi-ching.

With the theme of “Managing Expectations”, the Convention offered a valuable opportunity for students to gain an insight into the tourism industry from guest speakers such as Mr Anthony Lau, Executive Director of Hong Kong Tourism Board. “We learned in class about the distribution channels in this industry and names like Amadeus, Sabre and Travelport. However, in the Convention, we gained a deeper understanding of how suppliers and travel agents work together for customers,” Chi-yuen said.

Oi-ying was also inspired by a speaker who introduced the concept of mindfulness that aims to help relieve work stress for industry practitioners.
