SUPERIOR DESIGNMaximises engine performance and fuel efficiency, while reducing harmful emissions.

SECTION 1:

Controlling emissions & maximising performanceCritical in reducing environmentally harmful engine emissions, demand for replacement Lambda (O2) sensors is increasing.

EU ‘Euro’ legislation – the latest being Euro 6 – has imposed ever-stricter emissions caps on both diesel and petrol cars, resulting in a dramatic increase in demand for lambda sensors, which maintain and monitor the optimal fuel mixture. Most modern petrol cars already feature two OE-fit lambda sensors, positioned pre- and post-catalytic converter; and by 2015 it is expected that many will feature even more – representing a total European market population of more than 350 million. Lambda sensors are now also being fitted to diesel cars as original equipment.

High demand and on-going changes in emissions regulations means that there is huge value sales potential for garages, wholesalers and distributors - making it more important than ever to make sure you stay abreast of the latest technologies, and choose only the most reliable parts from an OE supplier.

Leading the wayDENSO has been manufacturing Lambda Sensors since 1977, building up a heritage of expertise and leading the way in advanced technology. As one of the world’s foremost manufacturers of original vehicle parts and systems, DENSO’s original Lambdas are selected by a number of leading marques including Toyota, Honda, Jaguar, Volvo, Mazda, Subaru, Landrover, Daimler Chrysler, General Motors and Opel/Vauxhall.

Aftermarket customers can access these same pioneering OE technologies through DENSO’s replacement Lambda Sensors programme, which includes Unheated and Heated sensors (switching type) in planar and thimble types, A/F (linear type), Lean Burn and Titania sensors.

Lambda SenSor SpeciaL

Did you know? Many of the types of Lambda Sensors offered as part of the IAM programme are unique to DENSO and not offered by other major brands. For example DENSO was the first company to make the Lambda Sensor a quantitative measurable sensor ensuring it can not only sense if the air/fuel mixture is too lean or too rich, but also by how much. This development was a huge step forward helping ECU’s respond and anticipate much more accurately, leading to improvements in fuel economy and lower pollution levels.

Leading the way in joint technical training programmes, DENSO After Market UK and one of its distributor customers Motor Parts Direct (MPD) came together to demonstrate their strengthened relationship with a special event at South Devon College in Paignton, Devon, in England.

During December last year, DENSO and MPD held two special, educational sessions with students from the college’s Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair course. Topics addressed within the presentation included aspects of DENSO’s ‘Vision 2020’, its business philosophy aiming to ‘protect life, preserve the planet, and prepare a bright future for future generations’. Top of the agenda was a closer look at Vehicle Emission Controls and Engine Management Systems, and the vital role they have to play in delivering a more environmental efficient engine. Lambda Sensors, Spark Plugs and Common Rail Diesel Injectors and Pumps were also studied in great detail, supported with some hands-on technical demonstrations.

Talking about the event, MPD’s Marketing Manager, Kevin Blazey said: “I’d like to

extend my sincerest thanks to DENSO. The event was hugely successful, with a number of students openly remarking upon the usefulness of its content. For us, the aim of the event was to inspire and educate the next generation of engineers, and I certainly feel that this has been achieved.”

Martin Pring, Regional Manager, DENSO UK added: “The future of our industry is in the hands of those just setting out on their careers within the automotive market. It is vital that we arm them with the most relevant and interesting information that we can, to ensure that they remain invested. The technical presentation to South Devon College was the perfect way to do this. More than this, it was a great pleasure to work so closely with the team at MPD. I’ve no doubt that we’ll be looking at ways to repeat this success with even more joint initiatives in the future.”

Since mid-2013 DENSO has been supplying a host of its Original Equipment replacement car parts to MPD, who in turn supply the parts to independent garages across the region. The relationship with DENSO is continually strengthening, and is helping MPD to further cement

its reputation as the most trusted parts suppliers in both South Devon and across southern England.

Knowledge sharingDENSO is continuing to develop strong links within the Greek aftermarket. Ensuring each customer is up to date and fully aware of all the products and opportunities available is of growing importance. Product training seminars, both in Greece and at DENSO Europe After Market headquarters in Weesp, are a key part of this.

Recently, representatives from leading Greek automotive parts distributor Liakopoulos SA visited DENSO in Weesp.

Christos Liakopoulos and Kostas Liakopoulos, Directors of Liakopoulos

SA enjoyed a full day of product training and presentations on each of DENSO’s aftermarket programmes in November last year.

Yiannis Fronimakis, DENSO Sales Representative Greece, Cyprus & Malta said; “Liakopoulos SA distributes the full DENSO product portfolio, so it is essential we continue to share product news and developments with them, as with all our customers. In addition we value the opinion and feedback that this type of event provides DENSO. We look forward to many more.”

Conventional climate control units are often designed and tailored to each vehicle model, but DENSO’s unit has a new structure, which has enabled the standardisation of components. This highly standardised automotive climate control unit, which, as well as being smaller and lighter, also achieves a higher performance, is the first of its kind in the world.

“Many of the subcomponents for this product, such as the air mix door, servo motor and blower fan were newly developed, which allowed us to reduce the unit’s size by 20 per cent compared to DENSO’s conventional model, and significantly standardised the unit,” said Katsuhisa Shimokawa, Executive Director responsible for DENSO’s Thermal Systems Business Unit.

The thickness of the air mix door is half that of DENSO’s conventional ones. By using sophisticated forming technologies, the depth and weight of the unit has also been reduced.

A conventional unit required several servo motors to operate the air mix door, whereas the new unit has standardised doors and needs only one, meaning the unit case is smaller.

The wing blades of the new blower fan have been re-shaped to best suite the wind flow, meaning the new fan is 15 per cent smaller and consumes 20 per cent less power, whilst maintaining a high air discharge capacity.

World’s first universal automotive climate control unit

> DENSO’s new Climate Control Unit

> The new Toyota Harrier > The new Toyota Noah

These new technologies mean that the new smaller, lighter climate control unit with higher performance can also be used in eco-friendly cars. For example, in a stop/start system the evaporator in the unit can be replaced with a cold storage evaporator, and in hybrid and electric vehicles the heater core can be replaced with a heat pump air conditioning system. In addition by changing the blower fan to a two layer structure, to take in external air and circulate internal air simultaneously, the air conditioning system could be used for vehicles with limited heat sources.

DENSO’s new climate control unit is already used in Japan, in the new Toyota HARRIER, which was released last December and in the Toyota NOAH and VOXY, which were released in January. It will also be offered for a wide variety of vehicle models all over the world.

DENSO will continue to help create an advanced automotive society by developing technologies that can improve the comfort and environmental performance of vehicles.

DENSO has developed the world’s first automotive climate control unit that can be used across a wide variety of vehicle models ranging from compact to luxury cars.

Attracting attention at AD OPEN

More than 3,500 people visited the fifth AD OPEN, organised by AD Ukraine, at the end of 2013, with many joining DENSO on their stand during the two days of the event.

The exhibition, which took place at the Kiev Expo Plaza, Ukraine, provided a packed schedule of themed conferences, seminars and high-quality master-classes; giving the professional visitors every opportunity to gain useful information and support.

Visitors to the DENSO stand were treated to several activities, including a questionnaire about each DENSO product, helping them to find out about the technical characteristics and unique features of each range.

Also popular on stand was the ‘Know Your Torque’ competition, where participants are invited to install a DENSO Spark Plug using the correct torque.

In addition the DENSO team led two well-attended product seminars covering the whole aftermarket product portfolio and presented a conference entitled ‘DENSO: Proud Past, Strong Future’.

“As usual the AD OPEN attracted many high quality visitors,” said Mario Gundlach, Regional Manager Export. “We spoke to hundreds of potential new customers and look forward to developing many new relationships in the coming months.”
