A Rabbit-Tale By

Pastor Mark Haas

3

As I write this column, Christmas Eve is a month from today. In three days Melanie, my son, Gregory, and I will be observing Thanksgiving Day with a yet not determined dinner menu! Gregory is pushing “Gluten Free” pizza and Melanie wants a full-course Thanksgiving turkey dinner. I tend to err on the side of “simpler” when it comes to the kitchen. (I wonder if McDon-ald’s or “Taste of Thai” will be open for business!) But, I’m sure, after some heated discussion and major compromises, there will be a meal that will satisfy our hunger and scratch the surface of “giving thanks” to the God who has provided whatever the meal just happens to be….

Holidays and their dinners have been tense times for as long as I can remember! Growing up it was an annual battle of not just what to serve, but who would host the family’s Christmas dinner: Dad’s side of the family or Mom’s! I always tended to side with Dad as Mom wasn’t , then or ev-er, a good cook…by her own admission! Case in point: when I left home for Concordia, Oakland to finish high school I weighed 145 lbs. When I finished that senior year living in the dorm, I was a robust 175! After Mom and Dad eventually divorced and remarried, Mom’s new husband was a great cook and took over all the duties. When he didn’t cook, everyone went to dinner at a favor-ite restaurant!

Dee’s family was blessed with women who could cook, but the holidays were still tense as there seemed to be an annual argument that was not finished from the previous year. I don’t recall the subjects but I do remember needing to console and smooth over hurt feelings, especially from Fourth of July gatherings.

When we started to expand our family with children, Dee and I had no problems until child num-ber three, Matthew, entered our lives. He was nearly four and a half years old when we adopted him, Gregory was six and had been “the baby” all that time, and Melanie was more shy and pre-cocious than you would ever guess today! Every holiday and birthday became a battle ground as Matthew believed each event should revolve around him! Nearly thirty years later it’s still a problem! As soon as Gregory could, he started showing up late for holiday meals or just disap-pearing to friend’s homes so he could avoid the confrontations with Matthew. For what turned out to be Dee’s last Thanksgiving Dinner, Gregory showed up thirty minutes after we finished eating because he was afraid Matthew would be there, which he wasn’t! And that was after he had completely avoided the previous year’s dinner when Matthew was present. I could go on and on but this little sampling should give you an inkling of what I mean by tense dinners and holiday gatherings.

Last Christmas, Melanie and I had dinner with my brothers and their wives and some of their children. It was the first Christmas dinner we three brothers had together since before Dee and I were married 44 years previously. It felt strange. Craig and Keith have had much harder times with multiple marriages and divorces and kids from “other fathers” to parent as well as their own. Unfortunately, Mom held up Dee and me as the “gold standard” and as a result, Craig and Keith and their wives haven’t missed their big brother’s presence. However, times have mellowed their feelings and we actually have more contact now than ever during the past four decades, when it comes to seeing each other (so long as I make the trip) and having telephone or text message con-versations.

If Melanie is recovered well enough from a second pending surgery to travel during the holi-days, she will join me on another trip to So Cal to see my brothers, Mom, and Dee’s family. Christmas Dinner and New Year’s Eve will be spent with Dee’s family, and in-between, we’ll see my family. Fortunately for this year, I won’t need to travel to Las Vegas as Sue and the Ve-gas kids will be traveling to Corona to visit Sue’s son’s family. My family all reside in Temecu-la, about 90 minutes away, so visits are more centrally located. The tense times will revolve around Mom, who at 87, sees her doctors often, remains wheelchair bound, and has multiple maladies that are significantly slowing her movement and positive outlooks on life. Melanie doesn’t want to visit her, opting to stay with Sue and family to play with the first grandchild. Gregory just wants to avoid them all so he isn’t even referencing the trip as a remote possibility or option! Matthew is far away near Tacoma and doesn’t want to come to California for any type of visit, especially with relatives he barely knows anymore!

It’s no wonder that the holidays are known for difficulties for individuals and families given the example of my family…and we’re pretty normal. Statistically there is no real increase; howev-

er, over the Christmas holiday season there is more news coverage of deaths by suicide, marital breakups and general civic dysfunction than any other time of the year. In the very midst of what should be one of the most joyful seasons of the year: celebrating the Savior’s birth…God becoming flesh at Bethlehem, evil and disaster often take front seat to the joy, hope, peace and love that the Savior brings as an infant! Certainly fewer people observe Christmas as the Christ Child’s birth and lean on Santa Claus for their desires to be found under the tree! Even Hall-mark Channel’s 24/7 Christmas marathon from Halloween to Christmas has downplayed the Nativity story to “boy meets girl” encounters…they’ve exchanged the love of God in Jesus “so meek and so mild” for marital bliss that never has a bad meal or holiday observance. The tem-porary has replaced the eternal as a marketing goal. The Christmas season begins so much earli-er each year that by Christmas Day folks are exhausted and the tree comes down even earlier. When I was in Beijing, China in 2006, even the homes of Communist Party members and silk stores had pictures of Santa Claus; just no pictures of Jesus! It’s no wonder the holidays are

rough times for folks. Jesus has taken the back seat during a season that is His…as all seasons are His!

Enough complaining, huh!? In the midst of it all, the Manger is still good news for us…Christ, the Savior is born. As we still have opportunity to celebrate His coming and the comfort and joy He brings, let us come, worship, and bow down, let us knee before the Lord, our Maker, for He is our God and we are the people of His pasture and sheep of His hand. We know our Redeemer lives and the salvation He brings, the future He promises and the gifts He provides: forgiveness of sins, eternal life and salvation wrapped up with His grace, mercy and peace through faith which He has also freely given to us. I’m feeling better already! Bring on Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas and all that surrounds it this holiday season! Joy to the World!

I’ll be praying and hoping that your Christmas is one that is blessed as well as merry and that as you celebrate, you too, will see the true spirit of Christmas…in Jesus, alone! Yours in Christ’s service,

Pastor Mark Haas, Soli Deo Gloria

Note to the Ushers:

Please be sure to count and log attendance and communion in the notebook provided in the cabinet. It is vital for our records. Communion cards are collected and put in the office after the service.

Please be sure to empty offering trays and return them to the altar. Put contents into a zipper bag located in the counters cup-board and put bag into safe after each service.

If you are ushering at the 9:00 service, you need to start the coffee. Please DO NOT dog open the doors. There is no need for that anymore. The doors will remain open when you unlock them and the panic bars work without being dogged.

If you are ushering at the 10:30 service, you need to clean up the coffee cart and put it away, remove all white sheets from the attendance pads and put them in the office. Check ALL doors in the church and Sunday school area to be sure they are locked and the lights are all off.

Christmas program

The teachers and children have been working very hard since September on the upcoming Christmas play. Whenever they see the camera now their eyes glaze over! Hmmm! Sound familiar to any-one? We are hoping that everyone will be here for that performance on Wednesday evening, December 10. There will be a pot luck prior, which will start at 6:00pm. The theme for this pot luck is Italian! I think that means we can look forward to Doris Corson’s

home made French bread! If you would like to join us for that meal just bring a main dish, salad, bread or dessert to share. We are going just take our chances and not put up a sign up sheet, let’s see what we get! The children that are in the play will be first in line for the meal. Then we will whisk them away to get them dressed and ready to perform for you at 7:00pm sharp. Then after the play, dessert will be served in the Fireside room! Bring festive desserts!

Legacy Journey Class

To be held at Light of the Hills Lutheran Church beginning on January 11, 2015 at 12:30p. The Legacy Journey is an all-new, seven-week, biblically

based class that teaches you how to truly live and leave a legacy for gener-

ations to come. This class will lead you deeper into investing, basic estate

planning, purposeful living, safeguarding your legacy, and discovering the keys to generational wealth and true generosity. Through video teaching,

class discussions and interactive small-group activities, you’ll learn a biblical

framework for living intentionally now so that later you’ll be able to leave a

legacy that will secure your family’s future and make a lasting impact on the world around you.

Board of Trustees December Newsletter Report

Thank God for all His gifts of love, compassion, grace and mercy!

Yes, it’s after Thanksgiving (although not as I write this) but I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of our church workers, especially my fellow Board members: Pastor Mark, Donna Kemppainen, Ken Freese, Bill Swift and Tom Hayhurst. Their dedication and praise-worthy efforts are unwavering. Your Board of Trustees (BOT) last met on November 19th where we discussed in detail the pro-posed 2015 church budget, (voted on during the Congregational General meeting Nov. 23rd). Also discussed at our meeting and voted on during the same General meeting was the proposed expenditure of paving the remainder of the upper level parking lot. Since my ‘crystal ball’ is in the repair shop I cannot tell you the outcome; as once again I am writing this article prior to the

23rd. NOMADIC WINTER SHELTER Since the topic of the Nomadic Winter Shelter is reviewed every year at this time I want to take a few moments to share with you our discussion points and results. To begin, let’s look back one year ago at our last fall General meeting. The congregation voted on and declined for our church property to be a site for the homeless during the winter operation of the Shelter. And yet we still wanted to assist in some way – and we did in a BIG way! This last March we held a Spaghetti Feed fundraiser where donations gathered netted the Shelter approximately $4,000!!! These funds have come in handy as new bedding and other necessities were purchased, and some money is still available for future needs. The Shelter, as of our last meeting, is still in need of two more locations this year for its alternating nightly rotation. The BOT discussed at great length the pros and cons to determine whether we should ask for another vote at the November 23rd General meeting. We decided not to due to the safety and security of our church workers. Not so much during the once a week nightly rotation but during the rest of the week. You see, we are at a distinct disadvantage compared to the other churches involved. We are one short block up from where many of the homeless gather and hang out during the day. In the past there have been intoxicated loiterers sleeping in our breezeway, or aggressively demanding money after learning we gave money to help an individual in need. As one might imagine this is quite unsettling and downright scary to our church workers when they are arriving or departing our campus in the dark. To ‘advertise’ how easily we are accessible is not prudent. I know how that sounds not wanting to ‘advertise’ ourselves, a church of Christ, but PLEASE, I implore you, do not take that statement out of context! We have asked the Property Board to look into better lighting and motion sensors and we ask all of you to please ensure the entire building is se-cure before you leave. Imagine yourself walking into a building, our building with two levels and several rooms, after discovering it was unlocked all night long. Back to the Shelter – for this reason alone and until we feel comfortable we can protect all our church workers, we will not ask the congregation to vote on this – perhaps next year. The BOT did place a line item in the proposed budget to donate $900 annually to the Shelter, which matches what other local churches are contributing.

Page 11: Newsletter december 2014

YOUTH LEADER/CHILD CARE ENRICHMENT PROGRAM The BOT continues to search for a viable Youth Leader and periodically advertises and interviews prospects. We are also looking for a musically talented individual who would like to lead a limited time, after school chil-dren’s enrichment program. If you know of any such person please ask them to contact any member of the BOT. (Wendy is too busy – we already asked.) SENIOR MINISTRY Ken Freese and Larry Hermone met to discuss the viability of beginning a Senior Ministry program for mem-bers of First Lutheran and then an expansion to the public. Due to the busy holiday season and then the Dwell-ing 1:14 program that begins this coming January, it was decided we would postpone its feasibility until late February. HEARING ASSISTANCE Is it difficult for you to hear the church service? It doesn’t have to be. We have approximately six (6) hearing aide devices that you may borrow during the service. They are located at the entrance of the sanctuary. Just ask an usher. But please do remember to turn them in at the end of the service so they will be available the next church service.

JESUS IS THE REASON FOR THE SEASON!!! May this Christmas be a blessing to you and your family. Respectfully, Laurie McRae-Hertzberg BOT President (530) 626-7464

Christian Education/Youth News!

During the month of November we invited LOTH youth to join us for ping pong. They had hot dogs for dinner then played “Catch Phrase”, Ping Pong and various other board type games. We plan to unite with their youth group for other occasions during the year so we can all get to know each other!

KNO

November was a very busy month and many were out of town on the weekends so we only had one KNO meeting during November and there were only a few in attendance. We were so busy taking photos for the Christmas play that we didn’t get any of our meeting! We did make turkeys out of toilet paper rolls for the Thanksgiving ta-ble. Then we put a small paper on his belly with just one thing we are thankful for. They had a lot of ideas about what they were thankful for so we had to narrow it down to just one. The new kids group will meet on December 12 from 5:30 to 7:30. We are hoping to come up with a name for the group at that meeting.
