SIKAT hits TUP’s roadPHILIPPINES MIGHT get far on this one. Being part of its nationwide tour in all universities, the Philippine Solar Car Challenge Society, Inc. (PSCS) launched SIKAT, the second solar-powered car of the country, held at the Technological University of the Philippines-Manila (TUP-M) covered court and Integrated Research and Training Center (IRTC) Conference Hall, January 13. Selected students and professors from De La Salle University’s (DLSU) Mechanical and Electronics Engineering Department designed and created the car, which they named SIKAT. SIKAT is an improved version of SINAG, the first solar-powered car of the Philippines, launched last January 27, 2007. Moreover, DLSU’s technical team including Professor Jack Catalan, Mike Rili, Jomar Ablola, Carl Mamawal and Danver Panganiban discussed the uses, functions and composition of SIKAT among TUP-M BS Mechanical Engineering students. The team discussed how they tried to improve the SINAG by creating an offshoot which is lighter and smaller that enables the car to run faster.

SIKAT, which took half a year to be finished, stands 1.1 meter, only one third of SINAG’s height. Creators applied “aerodynamics of airplane principle” that uses less air resistance, resulting to the car’s higher speed. SIKAT works by generating a peak power of 3.3 watts of stored solar energy on its surface. The solar car is priced around Php 5 Million. According to the DLSU team, the savings that an individual gets from the highly priced diesels and gasolines could accumulate one through time. SIKAT doesn’t emit smoke because it uses solar energy as an alternative to diesel and gasoline; hence, it helps us lessen the problems affecting climate change and global warming. In addition, the said event was sponsored by the Sunpower Corporation, Ford Philippines, Pilipinas Shell and Motolite. Furthermore, the second part of the event was the singing contest were Peter Gary Timpoc was proclaimed the winner receiving 50% scholarship and a free training from Center for Pop Music Philippines, judged by the DLSU’s Technical team. Cleaner TUP Implemented

JANUARY 22 — the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) conducted a ‘TUP Clean-Up Day’ in coordination with the University Student Government (USG) and the Accredited Clubs and Student Organization (ACSO) through Office Order No. 35 s. 2010.

The said Office Order was signed by then Officer-in-Charge Dr. Julian O. Marquez on January 18 after OSA’s request of holding the event. All college club and organizations as well as the non-college based, religious and new clubs participated in the said event by cleaning their own assigned areas inside the university. The purpose of the named activity is to maintain cleanliness inside the school premises and give TUPians awareness on clean environment. “Itaas ang awareness ng mga students na medyo marumi na ang ating university. Sana matutunan nilang magmalasakit sa school,” said Ms. Janice Lagrimas, OSA faculty-in-charge. Lagrimas believes that cleanliness must start within us and everybody should do his share in order to have a better TUP community. “Hindi dami ng janitors. Hindi rin dami ng nagwawalis ang sagot sa kalinisan ng school kundi, disiplina sa sarili ng bawat isa sa atin,” she added. The faculty, students and administrative employees were enjoined to participate by cleaning their own rooms and offices. The last TUP Clean-Up Day was held in the year 2004 which is said to be an active day for all TUPians. PA (S.B. Ditucalan)

How Far Can We Still Go?

As Technological University of the Philippines’ new president, Dr. Olympio V. Caparas’ capacity in quality management is the target of everybody’s observation. Obviously, we just have to wait and see what a claimed pro-student and strict administrator can do for the university before our verdict must be told.

For 108 years of its living legacy, our university proved its excellence in providing quality education and producing front liners in board examinations. This has something to do with how well TUP was managed before.

This, for sure, will be a challenge to our new president. The expectation of maintaining and, more importantly, improving the status of TUP as an avenue of good governance is a heavy load to carry. However, this is what a university official ought to do. As usual, the most evident indicators of good governance are outputs and achievements of students and alumni pertaining to their chosen fields of expertise. Can he equate what the previous administration did in the transformation of TUP system? Or will he surpass them all?

No doubt, our university is academically successful in achieving its objectives and goals. Yet, considering actual state of this institution, the technological is not really technological. This, most people believe, is a timely undertaking the administration must properly address. And TUP community is more than hopeful about this.

Now that we are in a level near to the fulfilment of ideals, what can our new leader do for the university? Questions encompassing his management scheme will always be present to test and measure his capacity to run this institution. Will he be a president of strict implementation? Will he be a friendly administrator? Or will he be everybody’s enemy?

These questions will continuously remind us how well do we produce and choose good and effective leaders. They will also be constant indicators of our desire to have a true-blooded president. Still, this must not be our sole focus in uplifting the morale of our university. Instead, our individual roles as causative factors in its performance should not be forgotten.

Therefore, as partners, we should ask ourselves how far can we go in promoting the welfare of our university! PA
