Commemoration day continued

Throughout the formal celebration, there were selections from the Performing Arts Division of the

school, while other items in the program were brought to the students from the Chairman of the

Board of Management, the Minister of Education, the president of the Old Girls’ Association and

others. The ladies of the Performing Arts Department beautifully stated the mission and vision

statements of the school, which the students in the audience rose to join and complete. Before the

speaker, Rt. Rev Oliver Daley, was invited to the podium, a selection of movement and dance

from the dance troupe graced the stage with their display of beauty and elegance.

After the service, representatives from Youth Reaching Youth (YRY) ministered to the

upper then lower school ladies. Ministries in the form of freestyle spoken word, a powerful song,

praise and worship and more left the students reflecting on their life with Christ. Those who

decided in their hearts that they wanted to start a walk with Christ were acknowledged and

prayed for. Overall, this section of the program was exciting, interactive and entertaining – the

perfect end to a significant day in the life of the school.

Evening of culture continued

The show began promptly with a short speech from our Principal Mrs. Sharon Reid and the singing

of the National Anthem. The Mistress of Ceremonies, Mrs. Bachelor, effortlessly kept the crowd

entertained between each group’s performance. The acts that were performed flawlessly by the

school band, school choir, dance society, speech choir and dance troupe, among other groups. They

“brought the house down”.

After the intermission, the audience seemed eager to get the show started and the second half

proved rather entertaining, as this half included the giveaways. Dozens of girls rushed to the

stage, some tripping over themselves (much to the amusement of the audience) as they each believed

they knew the right answers to the questions asked. We were also graced by the presence of current

Miss Jamaica World and St. Andrew old girl, Deanna Robins. In addition to this we were treated

to a musical performance that had the crowd rocking and swaying with each number. All in all,

the night was memorable, and as the curtains drew to a close we were all reminded that we are

indeed abundantly blessed.

Success once again for St. Andrew Netballers!

Once again St. Andrew Girls have claimed victory! As you all know this term was netball

season, and since our players won last year’s championship, they wanted to make sure they

regained their title this year. They were determined and played hard in every match, and for

the most part in the early days these matches were won! On October 3rd, St. Andrew

played an ‘easy match’, as described by one of the team members, against Jose Marti on the

St. Andrew Netball Court. The final scores definitely proved this was an ‘easy match’, with

scores of 64 to 6 for the seniors, and 24 to 10 for the juniors, both in favour of St. Andrew.

The netballers were surely assisted by the Andrews Cheer Squad throughout the match.

Even without the cheer squad, at an outside match against Spanish Town High on October

8th, the netballers brought home a win for both juniors and seniors with a score of 47 to 25

(seniors), and 23 to 13 (juniors)! The netball girls have surely not let us down this year.

Badminton Girls Shine!

Badminton team is on a role RAAAAEEEE, WOOOOOOOIIIIII!!! Our

Andrews ladies are shining bright like diamonds this year. Not only have we done

exceptionally well this year in netball, but the Badminton girls are also ‘un-top a tings’!

Come on ladies, we can never get tired when Mrs. Bowes or Mrs. Reid announces the

badminton competition results can we?? No way ho zay! Why you may ask? This is

because the badminton girls are always winning and not by little either. The results

have included: 5-1, 4-1 , 4-2 and their most recent victory against Wolmer’s Girls , one

of their hardest competitors yet, was 3-2. With these results so far we are sure to win

in the final competition. Go Andrews go!

Health and Fitness

Gotta get fit!!

What is fitness?

Fitness means being able to perform physical activity. It also means having the

energy and strength to feel as good as possible. Getting more fit, even a little bit,

can improve your health. You don't have to be an athlete to be fit. Athletes reach a

very high level of fitness. And people who take brisk half-hour walks every day

reach a good level of fitness.

Benefits of Fitness

Fitness helps you feel better and have more energy for work and leisure time.

You'll feel more able to do things like playing with your friends, dancing, or just

doing activities. Teens that are fit may have more energy are better focused at

school.

Tips to get fit

Instead of making your parents drop you to the bus stop… walk.

After school go on the field and jog or speed walk for 25 minutes with

friends

Run for 15 minutes 5 times a week. It’s better to do in the morning or in the

evening after school (bring your dog with you)

Tommy Lee - “The Sparta God”

The “Uncle Demon” as he calls himself has reportedly subdued all

rumours of him being a devil worshipper. Tommy Lee said to

reporters, “These songs are only for the music industry”.

Therefore the new coming dancehall deejay is proclaiming that his

songs for the obvious worship of the devil are just that of bare lyrics

and mean nothing to him. The public however, retaliates.

These songs are regarded as outcasts among many and more parents are

stress about their children listening to these demonic songs. The deejay, born

Thomas Lee is being widely criticized for his “selection” of music and the public

seems to be doing a fine job of tearing his career down. Regardless, the deejay

still pushes on singing solely corrupted lyrics. I therefore believe that this will

corrupt the minds of many teenagers and young adults in today’s society.

Massage your scalp – whilst watching television or listening to your favourite zip jockey.

Just run your fingers through it.

Trim, don’t cut, but trim your hair every 6 weeks in order to prevent split ends

Deep condition – you don’t have to purchase a deep conditioner. It’s really simple! After

conditioning, comb your hair out and put on a plastic hair cap for 10-15 minutes then rinse.

It’s as easy as 1 2 3!

HOME TREATMENT

"The [raw] egg is really the best of all worlds," says Janice Cox, author of Natural Beauty

at Home. The yolk, rich in fats and proteins, is naturally moisturizing, while the white, that

contains bacteria-eating enzymes, removes unwanted oils, she explains.

To Use: For normal hair, use the entire egg to condition hair; use egg whites only to treat

oily hair; use egg yolks only to moisturize dry, brittle hair, Cox says. Use 1/2 cup of

whichever egg mixture is appropriate for you and apply to clean, damp hair. If there isn’t

enough egg to coat scalp and hair, use more as needed. Leave on for 20 minutes, rinse with

cool water (to prevent egg from “cooking”) and shampoo hair. Whole egg and yolks-only

treatments can be applied once a month; whites-only treatment can be applied every two

weeks.

About Jamaica College

Floreat Collegium, Fervet Opus In Campis

(May the College Flourish, Work is Burning in the Fields)

Religious Affiliation: Christianity Address: 189 Old Hope

Road

Kingston 6, St. Andrew

Principal: Mr. Ruel Reid

Denomination: Anglican Founded: 1789

First established as a boarding school for boys, Jamaica College has remained a single-sex school with the boarding facilities removed. The school provides education to around 1,800 boys and has over 100 teaching and administrative staff. During the 18th century when Jamaica prospered as a sugar colony of the British Empire, several large donations were made for the funding of schools. The objective of these bequests was usually to provide free education for the poor of the parish to which the benefactor belonged. Jamaica College is a product of such a bequest. The institution is widely known in Jamaica for both its academic and sports achievements, and has had the privilege of producing many influential members of Jamaican society, notably former Prime Ministers, Michael Manley and Bruce Golding, and former Chief Minister and Premier of Jamaica, Norman Washington Manley.

Study Column

Welcome to the study column! Every quarter this column will explain one or two questions from each subject area in the school.

We will also give important study and life skills.

This quarter we will start off with a Mathematics question:

Simultaneous Equation

2(b) CXC PAST PAPER MAY 2009

One packet of biscuits costs $x and one cup of ice cream cost $y

One packet of biscuit and two cups of ice cream costs $8.00, while three packets of biscuits and

one cup of ice cream cost $9.00.

(i) Write a pair of simultaneous equations in x and y to represent the given information

above.(2mks)

(ii) Solve the equations obtained in (b) (i) above to find the cost of one packet of biscuits and

the cost of one cup of ice cream.(4mks)

We could write the equation like this.

Now that we have the equation lets solve the cost of one biscuit , x and the cup of ice cream, y . Note

there are many ways we can solve this by substitution, elimination, matrix and graphic ways

x + 2y= $8.00 => x= $8.00 – 2y substitution in equation

3x + y =$9.00 3x + y = $9.00

3x +y =$9.00 3x+1($3.00) = $9.00

3($8.00- 2y) + y = $9.00 3x+$3.00 = $9.00

$24.00 - 6y +y = $9.00 3x = $9.00-$3.00

$24.00 -5y =$9.00 3x/3 = $6.00/3

-5y = $9.00- $24.00 x = $2.00

-5y/-5y= -$15/-5

y = $3.00 ice cream cost $3.00

x + 2y = $8.00 => from the first part of the yellow highlighted part, underlined 3x+y = $9.00 => from the second part of the yellow highlighted part

Spiritual Column

Is it the real you??

Do you know who you really are? Take a look in the mirror, what do you see?

Is it the REAL you? We all have an identity and it’s up to us to decide what we want our identity to be.

Is it grounded in God or of the world? To truly know who you are, you need to know the potential,

purpose and power God has given unto you and also to recognize the person in the mirror, however,

does the image of the person lines up with what God says in the BIBLE?

You have to read the bible, it is your manual of guidance to live and survive this troubled world.

Does your mirror show a true reflection of you? Your mirror will always give a reflection of yourself. Are you pleased with your reflection? Well, some of

us aren’t because of guilt, shame and fear! Our lives are consumed by the world and so we see: greed,

lust, selfishness, hatred, idolatry, adultery and fornication. [2 Samuel 11:1-5] explains how David sinned

with Bathsheba. David’s mirror gave him a reflection of himself; he saw himself lusting, committing

adultery and murder! Yes, murder!. David was now guilty and ashamed of his use of power.

Who is the mirror?

The mirror is God working through you or others. Continue to read [2 Sam. 11] you’ll see that

Nathan was David’s mirror! He highlighted David’s shameful abuse of his power and how David

had sinned against God. God uses us to be mirrors for ourselves and for others to recognize their

wrongs and to be convicted and ready to correct them.

Can we change the image that we see in the mirror?

Yes we can! You should repent! When your mirror reflects your sins you should repent because

when you have sinned you have broken the law of God, in fact sin is lawlessness [1John 3:4].

Repent means to turn around so turnaround from lusting, from greed and fornication. Confess your

sins with your mouth, own up to your sins, accept the fact that you have sinned and repent! God will

take that sin away but if you choose to deny your sin God will not take it away.

I challenge you today to let the image reflected by the mirror, be the real you let it be a child of God

fulfilling God’s will. Believe in your heart that you can change the image to someone great, someone

beautiful. Let it be an image pleasing to you, may God bless you.

Hey NLS,

I have a problem; my friends think I'm stupid because I only listen to

RnB music. They are really dear to me and I don't want to lose

them. What should I do?

Hey girly, I understand what you’re saying. This is a common problem we face as

teenagers where we have differences with our friends as to our likes and dislikes. This

problem should not come between you guys if you are true friends. Your friends

should appreciate you for who really are and not by the type of music you listen to.

You should also accept them for who they are; and if they can’t accept them, then

maybe they aren’t really good friends. Also I don’t think it’s cool for them to be

referring to you as stupid because of your choice of music, ummmm No! Not cool at all.

You could also try listening to new genres of different music, like maybe reggae fusion,

or gospel. Remember that there are many different genres out there. Hope all goes

well. :D
