In December, students created art for the YMM Awards for Global Creative Arts.This contest is organized by the YMM Art Education Group and all global YMMschools will be participating!

The theme of this contest is: Fantastic Link - Art out of Waste. Wonderful thingscan happen with ordinary objects and materials we consider junk. Old toys,discarded packaging, empty cans, machine parts, broken tiles, buttons on oldclothes, old magazines...we are going to give these used materials a secondchance and make art out of waste!

We have made our preliminary selections between YMM and CES which will besubmitted to the final competition for jury. The selected students are as follows.From YMM: Andre Tang, Aryana Sheth, Aviana Kusam, Ethan Tian, Henry Yoran,Isabella James, Jayden Lin, Julia Eliot, Kyler Tees, and Sonakshi Thakuria. FromCES: Abigail Scott, Amelia Anselmo, Claire McKenna, Fikir Duressa, Ian Huang,Issac Shapiro, John Lopez, Josephine Nguyen, Ryan Holden, and Zachary Stone.We were looking for work that best transformed waste into a cohesive projectwith a cohesive and creative theme, used a variety of recycled materials and arttechniques, and displayed superb craftsmanship as well as an understanding ofthe elements and principles of design. Congratulations students! These works willbe exhibited in different art shows around the world and be displayed at the2019 Student Artwork Exhibition at the National Art Education Association (NAEA)National Convention in Boston, MA. Their art will have a chance to receive cashprizes in the final juried competition!

In December, CES students createdsome wonderfully crafted artworks forthe Christ Episcopal School's Gala. Atthe Gala this February, these artworkswill be up for auction! The 3rd gradersworked very hard on their wood-blocknativity scenes. The 7th graders eachcreated an ornament adorned withsymbols of Christmas. The preschoolershand printed trees on wearable totebags. Wonderful job students!

In school, Sonakshi was asked to writean essay describing a person sheadmires or who has influenced her agreat deal. In this essay, Sonakshiwrote about her mentor and leadteacher at YMM, Ms. Luisa.

"I’ve received advice from friends andfamily, but the best one that stays withme is from my art teacher, Ms. Luisa.She says, “Expressing yourself throughart can tell people a lot more thanwords can.” I struggled with thisbecause I never understood how I

could express myself through artwithout making my art work look“pretty”. When I made an art piece, Ialways focused on the color schemeand proportions to see whether thepiece looked balanced. Putting myemotions onto a canvas took a lot ofcourage, but I discovered I couldshow myself as I am."

Our comics and origami teacher, Mr.Alex, is the featured artist for themonth of December at Black LotusTattoo Gallery. His work on display is hislatest paper pieces on canvas.Alex is dealing with difficult subjectssuch as danger, death and theunknown. In Carnivorous, Alex usesinviting colors and seemingly harmlessflowers to draw his viewers in, but iftoo close, one might find themselvesin the spider's web or in the Venus FlyTrap's mouth. His pieces areephemeral, thoughtful and sincereand stand as a reminder that life isfleeting so we should celebrate whilewe're here.
