Hello and welcome back to 2015.
The year has begun really well with so many excellent innovations and changes across Brisbane Water
Secondary College, Umina Campus.
I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new students, parents and caregivers. The school has
undergone many major changes in recent times and is trying very hard to meet the needs of our commu-
nity which have been outlined in both parent forums and student interviews. These will continue in 2015
and I encourage your feedback on how we can continue to improve as a school in the future.
The Year Seven of 2015 have begun particularly well and there have been some outstanding achieve-
ments already. Students are engaged in learning and are beginning to participate in a range of activities
that can only be provided in a middle school campus. In the next month they will receive information
about their Learning Conference which will include motivational skills and tips for how to achieve their
personal best at high school. For my new Year 7 parents I strongly encourage you to stay involved in
yours child's learning. I fervently believe that for students to attain their potential, there must be a strong
relationship between school and home for the best interests of the student to be realised.
At the time of writing Year 7 and Year 9 are currently undertaking practise NAPLAN examinations in prep-
aration for their formal tests in May. These are being marked by our LAST and classroom teachers in
order to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Year 8 will undertake their first practise exams in
Term 3 as they begin their preparation for NAPLAN in 2016. For ongoing academic success at school I
strongly advocate that all parents encourage their children to read widely, complete all assigned home-
work tasks and undertake Maths Online which the school has again purchased to support students.

From the community forums the school has continued to act on the recommendation to improve the school
environment. This has included the renovation of the Old Mingaletta Farm building which is awaiting connec-
tion to sewage before becoming a school learning resource. Also over the school holidays the new Support
Unit area was established in B Block. This major renovation includes three completely renovated classes, a
new playground area, kitchen and shower/ bathroom area. This transformation has been outstanding and
events are being planned to celebrate its opening. The TAS area is also currently undergoing a revamp with
major changes occurring in the woodwork and one metal work classrooms. I appreciate the efforts of both Mr
Reynolds and Mr Richardson who are making these areas more visually appealing, as well as enabling them
to operate to their full potential
The new bike compound area will soon be completed. This will include concrete slabs installed and new bike
racks attached. In the past two years I have been impressed by the larger number of students who are now
riding to school. However- I am a little concerned and ask for parent assistance in getting the message
through that helmets MUST be worn and that safety riding to and from school is vital.
Another recommendation from parent forums was that the campus could improve the communication be-
tween school and home. The campus has implemented a range of measures including the introduction of a
Facebook page and Smartphone App which allows the campus to better provide information and promote our
achievements. The campus has also installed an electronic sign at the front of the school to provide infor-
mation and highlight notable achievements. Another endeavour to improve communication between home
and school is the publication of Year 7, 8 and 9 assessment schedules. To access these initiatives, as well as
the parent portal visit our school website and select “Parents and SharePoint” link. This innovation allows you
to assist your child in preparation for assessment tasks, as well as assisting them in developing organisational
skills that are invaluable for success at school. The campus also produces newsletters, school magazines and
sends out notes- as well other means of communication. In order to streamline this process new Head Teach-
er Teaching and Learning Lucy Burns will soon be sending out a survey to look at the impact of these commu-
nication mechanisms and if the process could be streamlined to improve the process in the future.

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Community Members,
Welcome back to the 2015 school year. I hope you have all had a happy and relaxing holiday period.
The school year has started very smoothly with superb organisation in each of the Teams ensuring that there is no down time, and that students are settled quietly and quickly into the classroom routine. It is a tribute to Head Teachers and all staff that the organisation is so smooth. I know parents very much appreciate the
work that goes into a great start to the school year.
Thank you also to parents and students for making such an effort to have the correct uniform and equipment for the beginning of the school year. Overwhelmingly, students looked superb when they arrived at school on the first morning. Your support in ensuring that the standards expected by the whole school community with regard to uniform are met and is greatly appreciated. This is especially relevant with school shoes, black
leather shoes are essential and no polo shirts please.
Term 1 is a very busy term with lots of exciting opportunities for every student here at our school. I encourage
all students to nominate for the many Academic, Sporting and Cultural events that are coming up
For Parents and Carers please note that the first Parent Teacher Information Evening is during Week 9 this
term, Tuesday 24th March 2015.
Once again, welcome back and I look forward to the remainder of the year.

Deputy Principal Report
Finally, I have lived in the area for many years and now been Principal for nearly 20 months. In that time I've
noticed that the overwhelming majority of parents speak very highly of the campus and the wonderful oppor-
tunities it affords their child. Disappointingly there remains a very small group in our community - often those
without students at the school who speak critically of the campus. Be proud- when people speak despairingly
about the school - correct them. Brisbane Water Secondary College is an outstanding school with a highly
dedicated staff who work tirelessly to provide a high quality education for the students of our community.
Be proud of your school. Brisbane Water Secondary College is an outstanding school- continually striving to be even better.

TEAM 5 2015 promises to be an exciting year full of learning, achievements and fun activities in
Team 5. Welcome to our new Year 7, 8 and 9 students. Nice to see our year 8 students return after their
Christmas vacation. This year Team 5 classes are 7.5.1, 7.5.2, 8.5.1 and 9.5.1.
Teachers in Team 5 are Ms Robson Team Leader, Mrs Beckinsale Assistant Team Leader, Mr Emmett, Ms
Smith, Mrs Peyser, Mr White and Mr Henderson. Any enquiries please do not hesitate to contact us at the
school.
Below are some lovely photos of our
delightful Year 7 students enthralled in their
learning. These students are demonstrating
our core school values of Respect, Commit-
ment and Relationships.
Looking forward to an awesome year of
education in Team 5.
Dear Parents,
Welcome to the first term of 2015. This term our students are studying a novel and learning about the
associated terminology.
Students in all years will learn about speech making devices such as rhetorical questions, triplets, allitera-
tion, simile, metaphor, juxtaposition and repetition. They will also utilise vocabulary such as plot, charac-
ter, setting, narrative voice, universal themes, context and writing style. Their speech topic will relate to
the focus novel and might also include related texts. Speaking games will be played in class to help your
child feel comfortable with their presentation.
Homework is an integral part of your child’s learning and all students receive regular homework. If your
child tells you that they have not received homework we request that you contact their English teacher.
Already, students have completed a series of skills tests based on reading, language conventions and
persuasive writing. These tests are diagnostic and help us to establish the areas of need in your child’s
learning.
We thank you for your interest and continued support. We hope that your children will realise the im-
portance of English and its relationship to lifelong learning.

What an exciting time for careers this year. We have now intro-
duced lessons for Yr8 to run alongside the existing Yr9 classes.
By now each parent should have received a note in regards to
what students need during these classes and what my expectation is for the year.
Yr8 will start to develop insight on their skills, attributes and goals for their schooling and form a plan which
will guide them with their career pathways. Whilst Yr9 will continue to work on resume writing and expanding
on their knowledge of career choices.
Already all students have been shown how to access the Career & Transition website. Students can keep up
to date with courses and information be accessing this site regularly. My other means of communication is
through the daily notices.
Barista and Whitecard Courses will be run again this year. Students must be 14 to attend. Dates and permis-
sion notes are already up on the website.
I would like to encourage all parents to consider sharing their career pathway and invite them to be involved
with a Yr7 initiative which will be run later in the year. If you have any exciting stories about your journey I
would love to hear from you.
Safe Food Handling Course is also available from the Careers website. This statement of attainment course
will be held at school May 15. It costs $85. Please bring note and money into front office ASAP
Mrs Lewis, Careers Advisor
Dear Parents, Caregivers,
On the 26th and 27th of MARCH, we
have the privilege of having the renowned cartoonist and motivational speak-
er, Joffa (a.k.a Jeff Taylor) visit our Umina Campus to speak to and do workshops with our Year 7 students
about the importance of school values; Respect, Commitment and Relationships.
This will be a creative workshop opportunity for our students where they will learn specific visual literacy
skills. One of the key objectives of our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) program is to make all school
stakeholders aware of and able to effectively communicate the school values in a variety of ways. We believe
that creating cartoon characters with comedic messages is an ideal way to promote these values.
The workshops will go for an hour and a half and each student will be invited to attend one of these sched-
uled workshops. The cost will be $6 per student. We would ask that you send your child’s contribution in an
envelope to the front office in Week 8 of this Term.
The PBL Team would like to thank you in anticipation of your continued commitment to excellence at BWSC.

NRL’s Most Cherished Prize visits BWSC
Our Rugby League Academies were given a special treat when the NRL paid a visit with their most cherished
prize, the Prozan-Summons Trophy in week 2. The trophy is presented to the NRL premiers.
Academy students got to handle the silverware and pose for photos, which was greatly appreciated. “It is really heavy, it took 3 of us to pick it up. It is the original trophy which is pretty cool too” student
Tosh Debrincat said.

Team 3 has been off to a great start to the year. Students
have been working hard and it has been positive to see stu-
dents bringing the right equipment and looking smart in their
correct school uniform. We welcome students who have moved from other teams and those who are new
to the school. Our 7.3.1 students have made a smooth transition to high school and are enjoying having
many different classes each day and getting to experience our wonderful Art rooms and Science labs. I
have included some of their thoughts, in their own words, on how they have found the first weeks of high
school. During visits to each class I also came across this group of hard working scientists from 9.3.1
(shown above) who were creating an impressive 3D model of a nerve
cell. Big thank you also to the parents who attended our information
evening. For those that may have missed this opportunity please feel
free to contact us if you have any questions, concerns, queries or just
want to introduce yourself.

TEAM Welcome back to 2015. What a brilliant start to the year we have had. I would like to formally welcome our
new Year 7 S class students who have all had a wonderful start to the year, attending their combined camp
with the CAPA students at Somersby. I wish to thank Mr Lawler for his organisation of the camp and the
other dedicated staff who attended.
This year Mr Lawler and I will be focusing on students’ application to their study and lifting the behavioural
expectations of our students. A reminder to all parents that our door is always open, so feel free to give us
a call to chat about your child’s education.
Thank you to the parents who attended both of our information nights. It was lovely to meet you all and Mr
Lawler and I look forward to working with you to ensure your child receives an exemplary education.
Thank you Mrs Burns and Mr Lawler
My time at camp…
Day 1: We left for Somersby on Monday 9th February. The bus drive was half an hour. When we arrived we
were informed about what would happen and then sent off to lunch where we ate some delicious burgers!
After lunch our group went off to an activity called pirates climb, some of us started climbing it and it began
to rain when we were half way up! The activity was really fun but it was a bit slippery. After afternoon tea we
had a high ropes course which was our favourite. For dinner we had chicken and rice and after we went and
played a game of trivia which was very fun and active. About 10pm we called it a night and settled into our
cabins.
Day 2: In the morning we packed our bags and cleaned the rooms. We had breakfast which consisted of
eggs, toast and bacon! Yum! We then set off for our activities for the day and tried our luck at archery, aim-
ing to hit some targets in the rain. During morning tea we had a bit of free time and a run around the oval,
then set off for the final activity, the flying fox. A lot of us were looking forward to this activity as it wasn’t as
daunting as the others! The view from the top was amazing and really really high! The flying fox wasn’t as
scary as we expected, but very fun. Once we had lunch we headed home to school and it was lovely to get
back to our loved ones and see some familiar faces .again.

THE TEAM would like to welcome our newest students
in year 7, our newly promoted year 8 class and a new-
look year 9 with students from a range of teams moving
into 961 and 962.
BWSC Umina Campus offers many opportunities for stu-
dents to grow as learners, as individuals and in collabora-
tion with others. We hope you and your students embrace
and enjoy your experiences in 2015.
YEAR 7
761 has settled in well, and all students are beginning to accumulate stamps in their PB books. The stamps are award-ed in 761’s classes in recognition of settled behaviour, a great attitude, leadership, initiative and working consistently to improve learning. Once five stamps are earned, students can convert them into a PB award. These awards go into weekly canteen draws and form the basis of recognising students for team and school behaviour awards and rewards. Great start,
Year 7!

classes. Both 961 and 962 are well on
the way to establishing work habits and
ways of thinking that will form a solid
foundation for their future learning.
YEAR 8
861 is picking up where they left their studies at the end of last year. There are a few new faces, and students are beginning to work together enthusiasti-cally both inside and outside the class-
room.

Rogers Park
Many of you have driven past it, walked through it and played sport on it but do you know why it is called
“Rogers Park”. It was named after Chief Petty Officer Jonathon Rogers who was awarded the George Cross,
the highest bravery award then available in peacetime. Rogers was part of the crew on board of the HMAS
Voyager which was severely damaged after a collision with the HMAS Melbourne on 10th February 1964.
Rogers organised the crew and assisted many young sailors to escape while leading the remaining men with
dignity and honour during their final moments. On Saturday 14th February the school captains attended a
memorial service and were asked to read out the names of the 82 men who lost their lives.

What’s in a balanced lunchbox?
According to Healthy Kids, a balanced lunchbox contains four
core items plus another one for active kids. A day’s lunchbox can
make up around a third of a kid’s daily nutritional requirements.
That’s why it’s important that lunchboxes are filled with nutritious
choices that offer variety throughout the week,
helping kids concentrate, learn, grow and play.
To drink:
Water is the every day drink of choice. Provide
variety with reduced fat milk drinks, or small 99% fruit juice
drinks throughout the week. Freeze them to keep the lunch-
box foods safe, cool and provide a nice refreshment your kids
will Love – especially on hot days.
An extra snack:
Extra snacks can be good as a once a week lunchbox food in
addition to the main 4 core items. Foods to consider are
wholegrain muesli or snack bars, small packets of chips or fruit
in jelly. Normally children get enough of these foods outside
school hours, so reserve them for active days when kids need
extra energy.
snack: Sliced veggies with salsa,
wholegrain crackers with reduced fat
cheese or fruit bread, make great nutri-
tious snacks based on core foods. Nutri-
tious snacks will help keep kids fuelled for
play and ready to learn. Include one that
your kids will love, every day.
Fruit: Fresh fruit makes a great nutritious
snack and it comes in its own packaging!
Include a piece of fresh fruit every day.
Mix it up with tinned, frozen, tubs and
dried fruit varieties throughout the course
of a week.
The main meal (Big Lunch): This is
usually a sandwich, wrap, leftovers or
salad using wholemeal or wholegrain
bread as best choice. Fill sandwiches
starting off with some salad or vegeta-
bles and then a choice of: lean meat
(beef, chicken, turkey, pork, lamb),
canned fish (tuna or salmon), reduced-
fat cheese, baked beans or the occa-
sional spread of Vegemite – all over the
course of a week. Mix it up each day for
variety.
