Staff are very mindful that NAPLAN is only a snapshot of two different grades out of our seven year levels and it is very much a snapshot of a child on one particular day. School staff have conducted initial analysis of our data and have established the following trends which again show that Bilambil’s results were mixed but include: The growth from Years 3-5 is widely seen as the best data to measure school practice. Our Year 5 data showed exceedingly above state average growth for students in Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation and Writing. Nearly state average growth in Reading and Numeracy was achieved. Year 3 data for having students not meet national standards was the best received in many years. Of the minimal number of students who did not meet national standards all have explicit learning support pathways in place which are achieving strong results for those children. ► Overall academic achievements still yet to meet state averages although trend data shows that this gap is closing and the school is clearly moving in the right direction with its pedagogy and literacy focus. Staff have confirmed that in line with our plan, our data shows that the current literacy focus of the past two years will be swung towards a more targeted approach in Numeracy as well in 2017. If you would like further discussions about your child or our school, please contact your child’s teacher to discuss these matters. Annual Surveying Parents will soon be contacted about a link to allow them to provide some feedback to us as to how we are implementing teaching and learning at our school. Starting Kindy in 2017 We are looking to finalise our Kindergarten

enrolments for 2017 to allow us to host a really

positive Orientation process in Term 4. If you

know anyone starting school next year, please

check if they have submitted their enrolment

paperwork and urge them to contact our

school office. Thank you!

Enrolment Process As a proud public school, our school offers a

quality education for any child who lives in the

Bilambil enrolment zone. We have a clear but

separate process of enrolment for students

who do not live in our designated school zone.

These zones are not well understood and as

our school no longer has spare classrooms for

growth, are being closely monitored by the

Department of Education to ensure that they

are being implemented appropriately. If you

know anyone who lives at the bottom of the

hill around the Panorama Avenue or shops

area who intends on starting school at Bilambil

in 2017, please encourage them to contact

Mr Mostert to discuss their options.

Creative Arts Camp I went to a creative arts camp at Lake Ainsworth. I

went for the flute and it was amazing! Not only did

we do what we were chosen for we got electives

as well, which had a variety of things to chose

from.

We also got to do outside rec activities. I loved

creative arts camp it was a wonderful opportunity.

Erin C 5/6J

Congratulations to Erin C and Zahli M who both

attended the Creative Arts Camp held at Lennox

We have 10 students who have successfully

completed the 2016 Premiers Reading Challenge.

Congratulations to the following students who will receive a

certificate at some stage in Term 4:

Students who have completed the PRC Kindergarten - Elyana H, Harry K, Ronan L, Jake S and Pearl S

Years 1/2 – Tyler M, Tayla S and Ruby S

Years 3/4 – Adam M

Years 5/6 – Sarah Jane M

Well done to all those who started the challenge and

remember to continue your reading of all the fantastic books

we have in the library for the entire year!

Book Week – 20 to 26 August During Book Week (Week 6), schools and public libraries

across Australia spend a week

celebrating books, Australian

authors and illustrators. To highlight

the importance of reading,

through this term, our K-4 students

have been participating in

collaborative activities relating to

all the fantastic shortlisted books.

Remember to ask your son or

daughter about the somewhat

creepy book ‘My Dead Bunny’

written by Sigi Cohen.

Robotics Spheroes Over the past two weeks, Stage 3 started using the new Sphero robotics equipment during their

library lessons, which the school has recently purchased. It is exciting to see the potential of these

robots and I’m looking forward to the students working together to attempt some interesting

challenges.

The ACMF is very pleased to announce that our

annual National Songwriting Competition for

2016 is now open for entries!

Students from every school in Australia are

invited to put pen to paper and enter an original

song for a chance to win a share of thousands of

dollars of musical equipment and tuition and

more!

Simply by using a phone, iPad, computer, or

other recording device, students can record

themselves singing their very own original song.

For full terms and conditions and to enter, visit

www.acmf.com.au. Entries are now open and

close at midnight, 20th October 2016.

Entry to the competition is FREE – however, feel

free to donate to the ACMF while you are on the

website! Your support will make a huge

difference in bringing the magic of music to

disadvantaged children across Australia.

Community

Brekky The school would like to

invite you all to mark

Friday, 2nd September

2016 on your calendar for

our annual School

Community Breakfast. The

feast will start at 7:30am

and aims to bring all of us

together in a relaxed

environment to have a

chat. This will also serve as

our informal Parent

Teacher Interviews for the

term.

Teachers and parents are encouraged to use this

opportunity to develop children’s learning, improve

self-esteem and encourage individualism. Songwriting

is a highly creative process. We want kids to free their

imagination and engage with learning in a fun way!

Don Spencer OAM - Founder & CEO

If you are interested in entering this Songwriting

Competition and would like more information, please

contact Donna McGlinn at school.

As many staff will be aware recently a poor possum was

killed on the road out the front of our rainforest area.

The poor mum was a distressing sight and had obviously

been dead for a couple of hours. She was in plain view of

where our buses would pull up, one of the caring family

members of our school discovered that she had a baby that

was moving in her pouch. Reporting it to the school staff,

they decided to remove her.

We rang Wires who advised to try to keep the baby warm.

So he / she was in a box in our strong room tucked under a

towel. A possum handler rang us back with some further

questions – did the baby have fur ? Or was it a pinkie?

Apparently there is a much better survival rate with fur. She

also advised us to try to keep the mothers body warm. We

put some heat packs in the microwave before lifting mum

and tucking them underneath her.

A couple of weeks later Bruce rang us with an

update. Bill is feeding well, doing fine and putting

on weight. He promised to keep us up to date on

his progress. He also said that possums are territorial

and if all goes well Bill will be released back into our

area.

This is the latest pic of Bill. How cute is he!!

More news as it comes in.

The team

It was a bit of an anxious wait

but a lovely volunteer called

Bruce arrived to take mum

and bub to the carer. We

asked Bruce to let us know

how the bub got on and that

we had called her Bella if a girl

and Bill if a boy.

This is Bill as he is lifted out of

the pouch. Yes it is confirmed,

he’s a boy!
