Ofsted will expose training providers who rip-off apprentices by collecting subcontracting

management fees without taking “responsibility for quality”, the chief inspector has revealed.

Amanda Spielman made the promise in a fierce speech at FE Week’s Annual Apprenticeship

Conference, warning prime providers that the inspectorate would not stand idly by while poor

provision goes unmonitored.

“Our message here is simple: as the direct contract holder, you are responsible for your learners,”

she told delegates.

The register has been under review since November, but Rory Kennedy, the Department for

Education’s director of apprenticeships, admitted to general surprise at FE Week’s Annual

Apprenticeship Conference that it was still in its “early stages”.

“We expect to complete the review in the summer and the register will open again in September,”

he told delegates. “The work in that review is still in its early stages.”

He admitted he was “very hesitant” to give a “flavour” of some of the outcomes of the review,

though he said the DfE would “welcome views on” whether the window approach is the “right one”

or “should we be talking about a rolling approval basis”.

As part of the preparations for devolution/delegation the Department for Education have issued

illustrative AEB allocations for 2018 to 2019 to MCAs and the GLA. These illustrative budgets give

MCAs and the GLA an indication of the AEB they can expect to receive in the funding year 2019 to

2020. The budgets are based on 2016 to 2017 actual grant deliveries and assumed 2017 to 2018

independent learning providers’ delivery to learners resident in MCAs/GLA areas.

During the funding year 2018 to 2019, the ESFA will remain in control of the AEB and will continue

to administer and manage in line with its current funding and performance management

arrangements.

Once the budget has been devolved to MCAs and delegated to the GLA, they will be responsible for

funding residents of their areas. ESFA will be responsible for funding residents of non-devolved

areas.

The devolution/delegation of AEB will encompass all providers who deliver AEB provision

irrespective of where the provider is geographical located, as it will be based on the residency of the

learner.

Ministers have agreed to the ESFA funding nationally, for a period of 2 years following devolution

(funding years 2019 to 2020 and 2020 to 2021), providers which meet the following criteria:

qualify for a financial residential uplift for their learning provision, and

receive more than two thirds of their income from the AEB, and

predominantly target the most disadvantaged learners.

This will be to aid their transition to devolution/delegation given their specialist nature and reliance

on AEB. The providers which currently meet this criteria are:

Traineeships for 19 to 24 year olds will remain a nationally funded programme with allocations

provided by ESFA, regardless of where trainees reside.

Confirmation of the final AEB to be devolved/delegated to MCAs and the GLA for the 2019 to 2020

funding year is expected in early 2019, once the functions necessary for the delivery of adult

education have been transferred and the AEB budget for the that year has been finalised. In

preparation for full devolution/delegation, MCAs and the GLA will, during this coming funding year,

refine their Strategic Skills Plans (outlining their adult education priorities), whilst further engaging

with providers to ensure a smooth transition towards delivering these priorities. The ESFA will

continue to support the MCAs and the GLA as they build sustainable relationships with providers

and stakeholders.

Providers who wish to deliver AEB provision, post devolution/delegation, in one or more of the

MCAs/GLA areas should start to build, if they have not already done so, effective working

relationships with the relevant MCAs/GLA.

snapshot of current voluntary sector work with or for older people in the criminal justice system,

aiming to identify priorities and ideas for future developments. The findings will be published in June

Pearson tell us “We’re getting in touch with some welcome news: Ofqual has published an open

letter encouraging Awarding Organisations to “consider changes” to their level 3 Applied General

and Tech Level qualifications “to provide a ‘safety net’ for students who narrowly miss a pass on

one or more externally-assessed units.”.

This means that learners can now pass the overall BTEC National qualification without having to

achieve a Pass grade in every externally assessed set test and task. However, they can only do this if

they narrowly miss the Pass grade, and if they still achieve enough points throughout the

developed to meet an individual educational establishment or company requirements. These can

either be short courses with end testing or ongoing CPD training which needs to be updated on a

regular basis with or without end testing.

As part of the changing face of Apprenticeships, we are also able to offer online training in line with

the new apprenticeship standards, which can be used as blended learning to meet part of the 20%

off the job training requirement. The online offer will allow candidates the ability to learn online

whilst being periodically tested to make certain that the information is being absorbed and retained.

They will not be able to move on to the next unit of the course until they have completed the end

test for the previous unit, and achieved the necessary pass mark.

As part of our offering, we are able to take any of the new apprenticeship standards and devise an

online learning package around the standards. This will enable the candidate to cover part of the

20% off the job training as distance or aided learning. we design the online learning into sections

with example case studies, YouTube or bespoke video at the end of which there will be a multiple

choice, drag and drop, or word insert bank of questions revising the candidate on the subject they

have just covered. Once they have completed all sections of the standards we are able to put in a

final end test prior to the candidate going through the gateway to complete their EPA. At any point

in time, they are able to go back and revise any of the sections even when they have completed the

section tests.

Once the candidate has gone through the gateway to complete their endpoint assessment we are

also able to set up an EPA online test if it suitable for that particular qualification. As we run a secure

online platform this can be taken like any other online test with an awarding body with an exam

invigilator. these test can be sat remotely on any PC or laptop as long as you have a WIFI

connection.

As regards costs for this service, this will very much depend on the qualifications that you would

require us to develop into online learning. Once we have an idea of the qualifications you would like

hosting with us, we will be able to give you a cost to cover the development of these on the

platform. These can be bespoke and your centre name and any centre information can be put on the

platform. Once the qualifications have been put on the platform we would charge £10 per month

per candidate for access to the platform. There would be a separate charge for the development of

an endpoint assessment test depending on the complexity of the test and the number of people that

will be accessing it.

We are also able to develop any other bespoke online learning e.g Induction courses, Safeguarding,

Fire Safety, Management CPD, Safety at work, and anything else that may be relevant to the industry

you are working with. We are also able to do Management Consultancy and Sales training within

companies looking at the ways to improve efficiency either in working practises, manufacturing,

Adfam and Sheffield Hallam University has published a study entitled ‘Understanding recovery

from a family perspective: a survey of life in recovery for families.’ The report is a large scale study

into the impact of recovery from drug and alcohol dependence on family members. This report

highlights the toll that addiction exerts not only on individual drinkers but on those around them,

and it establishes the importance of recovery in mitigating some of these adverse effects. One

finding was that 3.4% of respondents served prison time while their family member was in active

use, compared to 1.2% when they were in recovery.

Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Provision Expansion pilot

DEPARTMENT FOR EDUCATION The Department for Education is launching a pilot to extend the reach of 'Outstanding' Initial

Teacher Training providers into challenging areas of the country.

We announced in an October 2017 Press Release that we would, "Support our best teacher trainer

providers ... to expand their reach into challenging areas ... so more areas benefit from excellent

teacher training, and help increase supply of great teachers to schools that need them the most."

Currently there are variations in teacher supply challenges across the country, often at school level,

including (but not exclusively) some poor-performing schools struggling to recruit the teachers they

need to improve their outcomes. While expansion in school-led teacher training provision has been

successful, the increase in national training capacity has not yet delivered new supply to some

schools most in need of new teachers.

The Department intends to support 'Outstanding' ITT providers to expand their provision in

challenging areas for teacher recruitment, including to schools not currently involved in ITT that are

Ofsted Category 3 or 4. This is intended to improve the supply of trainee teachers, promote school

improvement through ITT, support teacher recruitment and retention, and remove obstacles to

social mobility in these regions and their schools.

Bids might target one or more of the category 5 and 6 'Achieving Excellence Areas' and/or one or

more of the 12 Opportunity areas. Providers may also propose any other area provided they supply

compelling evidence of teacher supply need and impact in their bids. Providers should ensure that

they utilise current published data, including, but not limited to the recently published Teachers

Analysis Compendium 3.

National Centre of Computing Education and associated training and support programmes for

computing

The Department for Education (DfE)

The Department for Education (DfE) intends to undertake a procurement exercise in Spring 2018 for

a package of programmes in four Lots, comprising:

1. A National Centre of Computing Education - its role will include establishing a network providing

support for teachers in primary and secondary schools, and facilitating links with industry;

2. A training programme to upskill 8,000 existing secondary computing teachers to teach GCSE

computer science effectively by 2022;

3. An A level support programme to support A level computer science students and teachers with

high quality resources and CPD; and.

4. A pilot programme to identify effective approaches to addressing gender balance in computing

and increasing girls' participation in computer science qualifications.

The DfE will undertake a second market engagement activity for interested providers to learn more

about the requirements for these services.

The DfE will be seeking proposals from organisations or consortia to deliver these programmes.

Proposals may cover one, some or all of the four Lots.

Parent and Infant Wellbeing Service

Tower Hamlets The Integrated Early Years Service at London Borough of Tower Hamlets wishes to commission

suitable provider/s to deliver a Locality (cluster) based Parent and Infant Wellbeing Service to build

on the work and success of the pilot project, Better Beginnings.

This will involve appointing a Parent and Infant Wellbeing Coordinator who will recruit and supervise

a team of volunteer peer supporters to provide support for local parents and carers during

pregnancy and the first year of the baby's life. It will link closely with the children's centres in each

cluster to identify pregnant families and families with children born within the last 6 months and

host an initial home visit to each of the identified and referred families to outline the support

available and to signpost other support services and facilities available. For some of the families this

would include having an agreed package of support from the projects volunteer peer supporters.

The provider/s will also be responsible for developing and delivering a training programme for the

volunteer peer supporters for their cluster.

It is planned that there will be two Parent and Infant Wellbeing Coordinators each covering half of

the Borough, either north or south. The Parent and Infant wellbeing Service can be delivered in both

clusters by one organisation or by two organisations covering a cluster each. If the contract is

awarded to two organisations, close communication and collaboration between the organisations

will be expected.

PST Training

Home Office

To assist Border Force with the training of new officers from a recruitment campaign in the summer

and autumn of 2018, Personal Safety Officers trainers are needed to support this recruitment.

All new Border Force officers will require to be trained to Personal Safety Training Level 3.

At present Border Force trainers deliver PST training at the ratio of 1 trainer to 4 students in classes

of between 12-16 students (4 trainers per course) as per the current Risk Assessment.

To minimise the impact on current Border Force operations by taking additional trainers out of the

business to train these new officers and the short time-frame available and the large numbers

involved. It has been decided to seek external support in delivering this training.

The outside provider will:

Provide PST Level 3 trainers to support the delivery of between 5 & 20 Initial 5 day PST courses to the College of Policing Standard and Home Office/OSU Assurance standard.

Provide 3 (L3 trainers) per course (16 students per course), supported/led by 1 BF officer.

PST trainers will provide both verbal and written feedback and assist in completion of student training records.

Trainers to provide Emergency Life Support first aid training

Training venues will be provided by Border Force and are anticipated to be near Heathrow and/or Manchester.

The training courses are expected to take place between July 2018 and March 2019.

It is possible that 2 courses could be run simultaneously, so the maximum requirement is for 6 PST

Trainers.

Provision of a North Wales Disability Services Learning Network

Wrexham County Borough Council

Purpose of the Service: Provision of a Learning Set for organisations working in Wrexham, Flintshire,

Denbighshire, Conwy, Gwynedd and Ynys Mon, supporting children and young people with

disabilities (0-25) and their families and other families with children and young people affected by

disability.

Term: The service will run for 1 year from 1 May 2018 until 30 April 2019. There is an option to

Dynamic Purchasing System for the provision of Alternative Education

Derby City Council

Kingsmead School in Derby has a statutory duty to make arrangements for the provision of suitable

education otherwise than at school for children of compulsory school age who, by reason of

exclusion from school or otherwise, will not receive a suitable education without these

arrangements.

Derby City Council, on behalf of Kingsmead School, now wishes to invite applications for inclusion on

a Dynamic Purchasing System (DPS) for these services. By creating a DPS we will give Kingsmead

School the flexibility of allowing new organisations to join at any time over the course of the DPS,

subject to them meeting the initial suitability criteria which will be set out in the DPS.

An EU Light Touch procurement tender exercise which is compliant with the Public Contract

Regulations 2015 will be undertaken to select providers for the DPS which will offer access to pre-

approved DPS Providers who can be appointed using an efficient and streamlined procurement

process; therefore ensuring the Council obtains value for money whilst enabling objectives to be

achieved.

For clarity, this DPS is not a full DPS as defined under the public contract Regulations 2015,

Regulation 34, but is a modified version. This is because Section 7 - Education and Training services

(the light touch regime as allowed under Regulations 74 to 77) are not subject to the full regulations

of the procurement procedures set out in the Regulations.

All service requirements over the course of the DPS will then be tendered by way of mini-

competition, allowing all organisations on the DPS at that time the opportunity to bid for the

requirements at what would be a market appropriate rate at that time.

Although primarily for the use of Kingsmead School, other free schools, academies and independent

schools within the city of Derby may access the DPS with the support of Kingsmead School.

The DPS will operate from 1.6.2018 to 31.5.2020.

Round 1 applications close at 10:00 am on 24.4.2018 with applications assessed by 31.5.2018.

Round 2 will open 24.4.2018, close at 10:00 am on 31.7.2018 with applications assessed by

31.8.2018.

Round 3 will open 31.7.2018, close at 10:00 am on 30.9.2018 with applications assessed by

31.10.2018.

Further rounds will operate on a similar 2 monthly basis.

There are options for annual extensions for a further 5 years beyond 31.5.2020.

The maximum budget for this procurement is 750 000 GBP per annum for Kingsmead School.

Further spend may be required by other schools within the city who may wish to use the DPS, with

Kingsmead School's help, to also secure alternative education provision. This is not expected to be in

Provision of a Part-Time Distance Learning Online MA in Air, Space and Cyber Power for the RAF

The requirement is for an Air Power MA online course that is open to all RAF personnel, (regular and

reserve) from Senior Aircraftsman to squadron leader as part of the chief of air staff’s fellowship

scheme. The requirement is to provide five annual course intake periods, starting 1.9.2019. One

further course intake option period starting 1.9.2024 will be made available if required by the

authority.

Course design - The contractor is to provide all course materials and academic content for delivery

by 1.9.2019 but as part of the course design and development, an initial review detailing the planned

course content is to be made available by 1.3.2019. Subsequently the detailed course content is to

be ready for review by 1.5.2019, allowing sufficient time for any potential amendment ahead of the

course delivery on 1.9.2019.

The MA is to be part-time, 2 ½ years in length and delivered entirely online. There will be 2

compulsory air, space and cyber power modules that cover historical, contemporary and future air

power. The remainder of the course will comprise elective modules selected from the area of war

studies, military history, international relations and strategic studies.

Access to all course materials, content and discussion forums will be made available online, 24 hours

a day, 365 days of the year. Each student will have a tutor /supervisor who will act as the student's

academic POC. The contractor can make this course available for enrolment to the general public

and international military and government attendees in order to ensure a wide and diverse student

experience for RAF attendees.

Supply of Hospitality Apprenticeship Standards

York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust wish to appoint a single training provider to deliver the

below apprenticeship standards on-site. The location of delivery will be either York Hospital (Y031

8HE) or Scarborough Hospital (Y012 6QL). A fundamental requirement is that the training provider is

able to deliver at both locations and that the majority of the learning can be undertaken in the

workplace.

In all instances learner numbers are based on a two year contract. Similarly, the training provider will

be required to deliver on site programme awareness sessions to aid staff understanding of the

apprenticeship programme concerned.

Funding for Empowering Girls and Young Women in Developing Countries (UK / International)

Grants of between £50,000 - £100,000 will be available for projects in developing countries that are

working for the social, economic and political empowerment of girls and women; and to strengthen

the capacity of grassroots organisations to predict identity-based violence.

The funding will be available to small not for profit organisations in the UK with an annual income of

below £500,000 and to organisations based in one of the lowest 50 countries in the UN Human

Development Index (HDI) or in one of the countries that DFID considers to be of high or moderate

fragility.

The funding is being made available through the Jo Cox Memorial Strengthening grants programme

and will make grants across 2 thematic areas:

Theme 1: Women’s social, economic and political empowerment through supporting women-led

civil society. This thematic area will support civil society to take an integrated approach to gender

equality and the empowerment of women and girls – to tackle the combined and simultaneous

disadvantages girls and women experience – in different areas and at different times of their lives.

This will include contexts where space for these civic actors is closing or at risk.

Theme 2: Strengthening civil society capacity for early prediction of identity-based violence including

Funding to Develop the Digital Skills of Vulnerable Young People (UK & Ireland)

The Carnegie UK Trust has announced that grants of up to £3,000 are available to organisations

based in the UK or Ireland to help develop the digital skills of vulnerable young people aged 11-25.

Following the launch of the #NotWithoutMe ‘A digital world for all?’ report last year, The Trust is

now looking to support the development of a further three projects through their first digital

inclusion accelerator. The programme has been designed to stimulate the development of youth

focused digital inclusion initiatives, whilst also building staff and organisational capacity to

effectively deliver the projects.

As well as the funding successful organisations will also have the opportunity to be part of a six-

month accelerator of support workshops, project and staff development opportunities. Successful

organisation’s will have the opportunity to pitch for up to £40,000 further funding and a year’s

support after the completion of the #NotWithoutMe Accelerator programme. The closing date for

Funding to Develop the Sustainability of Organisations Working with Unpaid Carers (UK)

The Triangle Trust has announced that the next closing date for applications to its Development

grants programme is noon on the 3rd May 2018.

During this funding round, the Trust will provide grants to not for profit organisations working with

unpaid carers, The Trust would like to see applicants use these grants to develop sustainable income

sources, so that when the grant comes to end the applicant organisation's income will not be

Equipment Grants for Mentally & Physically Disadvantaged Children (UK)

Schools and not for profit organisations have the opportunity to apply for funding through the

Wooden Spoon Society's Capital Grants programme. Wooden Spoon the British and Irish Rugby

charity which supports projects help mentally, physically disadvantaged children. Each year the

charity supports around 70 projects.

Funding for Charities to Develop an Effective Web Presence (UK)

The Transform Foundation provides grants for charities and not for profit organisation operating for

the public good to develop an effective social media and web presence with the aim of developing

future funding streams.

The Foundation has two funding programmes:

A Facebook Grant programme (which provides £5,000 of funding to spend on Facebook

advertising, with potential scale-up funding of up to £10,000)

A Website Grant Programme (which provides a funding package of up to £18,000 to cover

the upfront costs of a new charity-specific website including strategy, design, development

and training).

The Transform Foundation specifically target mid-sized organisations with a turnover of £350,000 -

£30 million; or those organisations that have the internal resources to follow-up the Transform

Foundation grant with internal investments.

There is a two-stage application process. Stage 1 is a simple online form to check eligibility criteria

and that the applicant has a clear, measurable plan for deploying the funding to generate income or

impact. Stage 2 consists of a face to face or online meeting with the Foundation or their partners.

Decisions are usually made within 21 days of the stage 2 meeting.

Funding for Projects that Encourage Young People's Interest in the Countryside; Literacy,

Numeracy and Science (UK)

Schools and not for profit organisations can apply for grants of up to £12,000 for projects that

encourage young people's interest in the countryside; literacy, numeracy and science. All

applications are expected to link in with either the National Curriculum or with recognised

qualifications.

Funding is available via two funding streams.

The small grants programme (grants under £4,000) supports state schools and small registered

charities which require a small amount of pump-priming in order for projects to take place. The

programme is a rolling one, with meetings at roughly two-monthly intervals throughout the year.

The large grants programme (grants up to £12,000) is aimed at larger-scale education programmes.

The next closing date for applications to the large grants programme is the 31st July 2018.

Previous projects supported include:

Fleet Infant School in Hampshire which received a grant of £1,495 to buy Numicon teaching

resources to raise numeracy levels;

Dersingham Primary School in Kings Lynn which received £2,700 to transform maths teaching. The

school led a workshop with all children and their parents to show how the school teaches maths,

including strategies for calculations under the new curriculum.

Funding to Support the Development of Small Charities and Social Enterprises (UK)

The Fore Trust has announced that the next funding round to support the development of small

charities, social enterprises and community interest companies will open for registrations on the 3rd

April 2018 at 10 am.

The Trust is offering development funding of up to £30,000 and business support to expand the

capacity of small charities, social enterprises and community interest companies. To qualify

applicant organisations will need to have a turnover of less than £1 million per year).

To apply for funding, organisations must register at the start of each funding round. Numbers for

Street Doctors who received a grant of £30,000 to enable the organisation to transition from

being a small-scale student voluntary organisation to a national movement. The funding

enables the organisation to employ a part time CEO and to develop the infrastructure to

formally contract with Youth Offending Institutions and Teams.

Art Against Knives which uses art as a tool for communication and personal development for

16-25yr olds received a grant of £27,510 to help fund the strategic development of the

organisation to strengthen its longer-term sustainability.

Circle Crew for Change which is the UK’s first youth mutual organisation owned by young

people, led by young people and for young people received a grant of £30,000 to fund a

part-time Project Development Manager to drive the organisation at the critical transitional

period in its development.

The Wellcome Foundation’s Public Engagement Fund is open to commercial and not-for-profit

organisations and individuals working in the arts, culture, entertainment media, heritage, leisure,

Grants of £25,000 to £3 million are awarded to projects taking place in the UK, Republic of Ireland or

impact of air pollution in the capital, explored through a playful folk history of the London

fog.

The Infers Group received a grant of £100,000 for its Arting health for impact project which

explores the potential of using street art and collaborative design to engage the public on

science and health in Botswana, India and South Africa. The project plans to forge

collaborations between biomedical researchers, street artists and community members so

they can interact with each other and create culturally-relevant and sensitive art

installations in each of these countries.

Grants for Specialist Tennis Equipment (UK)

Grants of up to £1,500 are available to special schools, disability groups and associations, etc for

equipment and specialist wheelchairs to enable disabled people to play tennis.

Individuals can apply for grants of up to £500. Individuals can receive support for sports wheelchairs,

tennis rackets, coaching lessons with a Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) licensed coach or course fees

for official LTA development/coaching courses. Groups can apply for: Wheelchairs; Court hire;

Coaching fees; and equipment packages which will include:

New Funding and Support Will Be Made Available to Women Through a Second Round of Innovate

UK's Female-Only Competition (UK)

Innovate UK has announced that it will run a second phase of its Women in Innovation awards. The

programme, which will launch later this year, will consist of a funding competition and support

package to encourage more female-led innovation.

Alongside this, Innovate UK will start running quarterly innovation accelerator workshops to help get

more women innovating in business nationwide. Innovate UK will also review our existing

programmes to see how we can better promote and inspire diversity.

Local School Nature Grants Scheme (England, Scotland and Wales)

Learning through Landscapes has announced that the next deadline for schools to apply to the Local

School Nature Grant Scheme is the 27th April 2018. The scheme offers schools the opportunity to

apply for up to £500 worth of equipment from the product catalogue on the Learning through

Landscapes website to help schools undertake environmental improvements.

The scheme is only open to schools; learners must be aged 5 and upwards. Successful applicants will

have demonstrated that they are passionate about making environmental improvements and,

ideally, will have included the children and their local community in decision making about the

project and the choice of equipment. All schools in England, Scotland and Wales have a list of 72

products to choose from; the list includes items such as bird boxes, bee hotels and den making kits.

Awards include a two-hour training session to help schools get the most out of the equipment

provided.

The programme is only open to schools. Nurseries, Playgroups, Pre-Schools and gardening groups

are not eligible. Reception settings attached to a school (i.e. on the same physical site) are eligible to

apply in partnership with a school, but the school must lead the application. Secondary schools are

very welcome to apply.

Applicants must be employed by the school. We are unable to accept applications on behalf of the

school from PTA’s, Governors, ‘Friends of’ groups etc.

Funding for Projects that Support Disadvantaged and Disengaged Young People (England &

Wales)

Registered charities in England and Wales can apply for funding for projects that benefit

disadvantaged and disengaged young people in England and Wales.

Priority is given to programmes designed to help disadvantaged and disengaged young people in the

age range of 14 to 30, to pursue pathways to Education, Training and Employment with the ultimate

aim of helping them to become financially independent. There is no minimum or maximum amount

and projects can be funded for more than one year. However, the Peter Cruddas Foundation will be

looking to the applicant to demonstrate that they can manage the amount they have applied for and

how they intend to continue (if appropriate) after the funding has been spent.

Please note that the Foundation is not accepting applications for Capital Projects.

£1.7 Billion Fund Launched to Transform Transport Systems in English City Regions (England)

City regions across England are being invited to bid for funding from the £1.7 billion Transforming

Cities Fund to help boost local economies.

The money is a key part of delivering the government’s Industrial Strategy by supporting ambitious

and innovative transport projects that will increase productivity and crack down on congestion.

Up to 10 English city regions will then be selected to work with the Department for Transport to co-

develop a strong package of proposals. These will focus on improving public and sustainable

transport links to centres of employment and driving up productivity.

The fund will support new local transport links, particularly for those struggling to travel between

city centres and suburban areas. Proposals will be accepted from local transport authorities outside

London who represent a city region with a workday population of around 200,000 or more people.

Home Office Announces New Round of Funding to Tackle Knife Crime (England)

As part of a new step-change to tackle the threat of violent behaviour, the Community Fund – which

supports community projects to work with young people about the dangers of carrying knives – will

have its funding increased to up to £1 million.

Over 40 charities, including the Ben Kinsella Trust, have already benefited by receiving grants of up

to £20,000 through the first round of the Community Fund which was launched in October 2017.

In addition, further funding has been secured for Young People’s Advocates until at least the end of

March 2019, to provide support for vulnerable women and girls at risk of exploitation by gangs.

Minister for Crime, Safeguarding and Vulnerability Victoria Atkins said:

Knife crime has devastating consequences for families and local communities and I am determined

to provide necessary support for those most at risk.

Tackling this crime needs a change in young people’s attitudes so they are not tempted to carry a

knife and understand that they risk inflicting serious injury or even a tragic loss of life if they do.

This new funding will allow communities to work with young people, so they do not want to carry

knives. This will be a commitment in the forthcoming Serious Violence Strategy which will be

published later this spring, in which there will be a strong emphasis on early intervention.

The Home Office has already provided around £2.5 million of funding for 13 Young People’s

Advocates over 6 years (April 2012 to March 2018) in London, Manchester and Birmingham. In

recognition of the important services these professionals deliver to vulnerable women and girls

affected by gangs, funding will continue in order to ensure effective delivery of these services.

Early intervention and prevention will be one of the main messages in the new Serious Violence

Strategy to be published later this spring. It will place a new emphasis on steering young people

away from crime, while continuing to promote the strongest possible law enforcement approach.

age of 21 who have a physical or learning disability or who are socially disadvantaged.

Whilst the Trust operates primarily within Edinburgh and the Lothians, it may also award grants

Scotland-wide to eligible individuals and organisations that include schools, established charitable

organisations and other groups supporting disadvantaged young people.

Grants can cover expenses such as:

Dyslexia tuition

School trips (must be applied for by the school and not individuals)

Bus passes

School expenses such as books and equipment

Laptops where there is a special education need

Schools may also apply for help towards school trips or outings for eligible pupils. In

Funding to Give People Suffering from Motor Neurone Disease or their Carers “Time Out”

(Scotland)

Individuals that have Motor Neurone Disease (MND) or care for someone with MND can apply for

small grant of up to £1,000 towards the cost of a holiday or other ‘time out'.

The grants which are being made available through MND Scotland's Time Out Grants gives people

suffering from MND and their carers the chance to enjoy quality time outside their usual routine.

People with MND who do not have a carer are not eligible to apply for this grant programme. The

grants can be used to go on a holiday, take a regular break to meet friends for coffee, pursue a

hobby, or just have time to relax. The grant can be used for any costs that make time out possible;

e.g. accommodation, holiday insurance, transport, respite care, or meals out; etc.

Funding for School Breakfasts (Scotland)

Magic breakfast is a registered charity that aims to end hunger as a barrier to education in UK

Schools by providing healthy breakfast food to children most in need. A "magic" breakfast is

designed to give children energy, protein, vitamins and minerals, is low in sugar, salt and fat and

complies with the Government's school food standards. The charity believes that no child should

start the school day too hungry to concentrate and is currently accepting applications from schools

in England and Scotland.

In Scotland, Magic Breakfast is working with 13 schools in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife and North

Ayrshire, with plans in place to begin delivering food and expert support to schools in East Ayrshire,

Falkirk, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire later in 2018.

Any Primary School qualifies for Magic Breakfast support when 55% (or above) pupils are in SIMD

Decile 1 and 2 and/or 35% (or above) are eligible for Free School Meals. A Secondary School qualifies

for support when 40% (or above) pupils are in SIMD Decile 1 and 2. Applications can be made at any

time. The charity does currently have a waiting list of schools but is committed to reaching each of

them as soon as funding is available.

Innovation Voucher Scheme - Follow on Funding (Scotland)

The Scottish Funding Council has announced that the next deadline for applications under its Follow

on Innovation Voucher Scheme is the 4th May 2018.

The awards are specifically intended to encourage existing partnerships that have previously

collaborated and jointly received funding. This can include the Scottish Funding Council Innovation

Voucher awards scheme or any other funded activity. Businesses in partnership with Higher

Education Institutes can apply for funding of up to £20,000. The grant requested must be matched in

cash by the company.

Small Grants for Museums (Scotland)

Any organisation that runs an Accredited Museum in Scotland can apply for a grant of between £500

and £5,000 for up to 75% of the costs of a small, discrete project that supports their own continuous

improvement goals and fits in with the aims of the National Strategy for Scotland's Museums and

Galleries.

Projects should demonstrate one of the following:

An enterprising approach – either with an innovative way of solving a problem or involving

income generation

Skills development (for staff and or volunteers)

Advocacy – helping to raise your museum’s profile

Non-accredited organisations may also apply for up to £1,500 for up to 100% of project costs.

Grants of between £5,000 and £15,000 are available to public and third sector organisations to

authorities, health boards, charities and social enterprises

The funding is being made available by NESTA, the UK's Foundation for Innovation through the

New Funding Scheme to Support Local Housing Projects for People in Need (Northern Ireland)

Housing projects and charities from across Northern Ireland have until the 13th April 2018 to apply

to for grants of up to £50,000 to support local housing projects.

The aim of the grants is to provide the kind of homes communities really need. These can be homes

to buy or homes to rent. The funding can be used to provide housing services to people in need.

Examples of what can be funded include:

Helping people to access affordable private rented accommodation;

Provide rent deposits and support for people with learning disabilities or mental health

issues to move on from supported accommodation to private rented homes with support

from a key worker;

Set up rent deposit loan schemes; etc. The funding is provided through the Community

Foundation for Northern Ireland and the nationwide Building society and projects can last

for up to 2 years.

Support older people to maintain accommodation and live at home independently for as

long as possible through tailored advice, information and preventing hazards at home.

Set up mediation services to enable young people to access counselling services to reconcile

where appropriate family relationships and prevent them from becoming homeless.

Singular organisations can apply for grants of between £10,000 and £25,000 and consortia or

partnerships can apply for grants of between £10,000 and £50,000.

Funding for Short Art Films by Female Producers/Directors (Northern Ireland)

Applications are now open for Two Minute Masterpiece 2018, an initiative made available through

the BBC Arts Show in partnership with Northern Ireland Screen. Representing an exciting

opportunity for emerging female producers and directors aged between 18 and 30, five short art

films will be commissioned to be screened on a BBC platform. The films selected will have a core

musical aspect but could be drama, documentary, a music video or an animation and feature, for

example, a performance, a specially created score, the story of a musical artist or band.

Ten entrants will be shortlisted and invited to a mentoring session before resubmitting an updated

proposal and pitching their entries.

Five successful filmmakers will be selected, paired with a mentor and awarded £1000 to help with

production costs.

In 2017, the films commissioned showcased the breadth of talent and stories that female film

makers had to tell through screenings in cities from Derry to Delhi with awards going to Rosehill,

Snapshots, Star Factory, Surrealistic Self and Visible.

Funding to Tackle Health In-Equalities (Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees)

The Peoples Health Trust's Active Communities programme in Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees

(HealthBloom) is open for applications until 1 pm on the 4th April 2018.

Through the Active Communities programme, grants of between £5,000 and £25,000 per year are

available for projects target areas or communities (including communities of interest) most affected

by health inequalities. For example, this could be a project covering a few streets, a housing estate, a

small village or a group of people who have shared experiences, characteristics or common interests

and wish to come together to address specific issues that are important to them. They may live

across a wider area.

Projects can run for between 9 months and 2 years. Groups can apply if they are non-profit, have a

constitution and are more than three months old and the group's income must be less than

£350,000 a year, or an average of £350,000 over two years.

611 Asylum Work in Huddersfield who received a grant of £46,996 over two years to expand their

existing work, and aims to benefit asylum seekers, failed asylum seekers and refugees from

Huddersfield and neighbouring areas. It will provide a mixture of both practical and social support

including advocacy, help with housing, paying bills, and support into training, education and

employment. Beneficiary peer mentors will interpret and provide encouragement. There will also be

a weekly drop-in offering a hot meal and chance to meet friends, socialise and practice English with

volunteers. The project is focused on addressing issues related to refugee/asylum seeker status and

social/emotional isolation.

Community Safety Programme (County Durham and Darlington)

The Police, Crime & Victims’ Commissioner (PCVC), in partnership with County Durham Community

Foundation (CDCF), is making available £150,000 for a grants fund to support the community and

voluntary sector of County Durham and Darlington.The fund will make available grants of £2,000 and

£7,500 to support projects and initiatives across County Durham & Darlington that help keep

communities safe and contribute towards inspiring public confidence.

The key themes that the fund is looking to support include projects and activities that:

Encourage diversionary activities

Tackle anti-social behaviour

Tackle harm caused by alcohol, drugs, and violence.

Preference will be given to projects that can show they are embedded in a community, and focus on

a specific locality, as opposed to projects with a wider but lighter touch approach. An example would

be creating activities for young people in a specific community as opposed to a county wide publicity

campaign for public safety.

The fund is not aimed at organisations that are already funded directly from core commissioned,

statutory policing and community safety activities, but will support projects and initiatives that are

additional and work at a local community level.

Grants of up to £30,000 to Help Early Stage Charities and Social Enterprises Grow (UK)

The Fore Trust has announced that its next round of funding will open for applications on the 3rd

April 2018. The Fore Trust is the only open-access funder in the UK offering development funding

and strategic support to help early-stage charities and social enterprises to grow and expand.

The Fore will fund any UK registered charity, social enterprise or community interest company that is

small (annual income less than £1m) and charitable.

Grants of £50,000 Available to Support the Armed Forces Community (UK)

The next application deadline for Stage 1 applications to the Royal British Legion's external grants

scheme is the 27th April 2018.

Grants of up to £50,000 are available to any not-for-profit or non-statutory organisation running, or

planning, charitable activities in support of the Armed Forces community. Priority will be given to

projects or services supporting the following outcome themes:

Employment and training;

Family support;

Homelessness and outreach;

Supporting the elderly.

Grants awarded in 2016 included:

X-Forces, a pilot, an enterprise training workshop at four Pop In Centres for Armed Forces

Grants to Enhance the Teaching of Mathematics (UK)

The London Mathematical Society has announced that Mathematics Teachers throughout the UK

can apply for grants of up to £400 to attend specific one or two-day conferences/events organised

by professional mathematical organisations or to cover the costs of external trainers in

schools/educational institutions. The aim of the grant is to facilitate mathematical professional

development to allow teachers in UK schools/educational institutions to develop their subject

knowledge.

The grant can contribute to the costs of registration for the course and a proportion of the travel and

subsistence expenses of attendees. Any application for a grant under this scheme must be made by

a teacher of mathematics or ITE provider based in the UK. The grants are open to teachers of

mathematics from primary school to A-Level or equivalent (inclusive of STEP/AEA). The grants can

also be used to assist providers of professional development to run conferences and courses that

The funding is being made available through the Feminist Review Trust who are particularly

interested in applications for hard to fund projects.

Projects previously supported include:

A grant of £5,000 to support the setting up of an Eastern European Women's Support Group

and volunteering programme, in the Southend and Castle Point Boroughs of Essex

A grant of £6,000 to support Syrian women, girls aged 12+ and other Arabic speaking clients

in Edinburgh.

New Fund to Promote Work Place Equality Opens for Applications (Scotland)

A new £500,000 fund has been launched to support private businesses in reducing employment

inequalities, discrimination and barriers in the workplace. Grants of between £5,000 and £50,000 are

available. In exceptional circumstances, applications of up to £100,000 will be considered.

The funding will support employers in reducing employment inequalities, discrimination and barriers

particularly across the arts, culture, leisure, tourism, finance, manufacturing, construction,

agriculture and fishing, transport and communication and STEM sectors.

To be eligible applicants should be a private business or a third sector organisation whose project

proposes to work with private business.

There are four participant groups that this fund is targeting. Applications must focus on one or more

of these groups:

Minority ethnic people

Women

Disabled people

Older workers (those aged over 50 years)

Funding for Grassroots Football for Women and Girls and Disabled People (England)

Over the next two years, the FA is investing £1.5 million into the Football Foundation’s Grow the

Game Scheme to encourage ‘not for profit' organisations to set up one or more new football teams

for two underrepresented groups - Women and Girls (age 7 up) and Disabled People. Grow the

Game grants of £1,500 will help to meet the costs associated with starting new grassroots football

teams and can cover a range of expenditure including:

• Facility hire

• Hire of FA qualified coaches

• Referees fees

• CRB checks

• Affiliation fees

• League entry

• First aid kits

• Promotion and publicity

• FA coaching courses

The costs of football kit and equipment can also be covered through a bespoke voucher.

Organisations eligible to apply will be:

• Football Clubs

• Youth Clubs with a football programme

• Futsal Clubs

• Community groups/centre/clubs

• Charitable Organisations

• Parish Councils and Local Authorities

• Sports Associations and Multi-sports clubs

legal problems. We expect this to include benefits advice and help with claims, debt management

other kinds of switching advice and immigration advice. An important element of the service will be

financial management coaching and training to help individuals manage their own affairs and

become more financially independent and confident.

Capital Grants to Create Multi-Sport Facilities: Programme Opens Soon (Northern Ireland)

A new capital grants programme financed by National Lottery funds and managed and administered

by Sport Northern Ireland is now open for applications. The Multi-Facility Fund aims to partially

address identified sports facility deficits by contributing to targets outlined in The Northern Ireland

Strategy for Sport and Physical Recreation (2009-2019) – Sport Matters and supports the objectives

of Sport Northern Ireland’s Corporate Plan.

Grants of £100,000 to £1,000,000 will be available for projects that:

• Create a multi-facility environment with a mixture of indoor and / or outdoor provision i.e.

host “Four or more different sports facility types located on a single site.” For example, a site

could include a natural turf pitch; synthetic pitch, sports hall, and a fitness suite.

• Address identified sports facility deficits.

• Can demonstrate consultation/support from three or more Sport NI recognised Governing

Bodies of Sport and deliver against their local priorities.

• Have a long-term sustainable sports development plan which details programmed activity,

aimed at significantly increasing participation.

Eligible applicants will be:

• Councils

• Voluntary sports clubs and voluntary/community sector organisations

• Schools (education authorities should apply on behalf of schools and will have demonstrated
