The inlet capacity of the system has now been increased from 12,700mm2 to 31,000mm2. The main benefit of this work of course is to improve accessibility to the dust extractor for maintenance and cleaning as well significant improvement to the overall performance of the system. Woodie of the year

    Martin Horevoorts

The very successful working bees have now completed the relocation and upgrading of the Dust Extraction system. The inlet capacity of the system has now been increased from 12,700mm2 to 31,000mm2. The main benefit of this work of course is to improve accessibility to the dust extractor for maintenance and cleaning as well significant improvement to the overall performance of the system. The Woodies thank Peter Heitmann for the research, design and management of the project. Thankyou to all Woodies who helped. We are fortunate to have members with such a range of engineering skills in the Club. The metal work of Graham Thomson, Bruce Sibson and Peter meant that the work proceeded as planned without any major problems.

    Bruce Sibson. Safety officers Notes

The excitement of an MSDSOk a Material Safety Data Sheet is about as exciting as watching grass grow. What is a MSDS? Hopefully you would have noticed the collection of them on the wall near the main door. They are required by law to be located where everyone can see them and be located within 1 metre from the entrance.

  • Why do we need a MSDS

A Material Safety Data Sheet is a document produced by the manufacturers of hazardous materials. It details the toxicity, first aid requirements for touch, breathe, and ingestion of the material. It also has a flammability rating. This information allows us, as workers, to know what to do if a member eats, touches, or inhales a substance. It also allows the Fire Brigade to quickly determine if, when there is a fire on the premises, a substance is likely to explode, or give off toxic fumes when ignited.

Should we all know what substances have a MSDS?

Not necessarily, it may be interesting to note that “Aquadhere” glue has one, and there is a real possibility that a person will become sick if they drink some. Have a look at them and know where they are.

Next month I promise to have a more exciting article.

Ok here is something safety related that is not only exciting but also shocking, Turners and all wood workers should look at it but not if you are a bit squeamish.

    Member Profile Peter Heitmann

I was born in Marienburg – Germany. This Place is now Poland. The Russians came in 1944 bombing us first and we had to flee to West-Germany into the British Controlled Zone. There in Westfalia I had my education and apprenticeship as instrument maker. In 1959 I served in the army and in 1961 went back to Tech. School. My first job as a design-engineer was with Siemens in Munich and (here it comes) was designing antenna towers for TV transmission in Australia!!!!Their place of installation had names that did not sound English. One I remember quite well was Mt. Buninyong!! In 1967 I married my beautiful wife Karin. We are still very happy and  look forward to our golden anniversary. In 1967 we decided to see the world and as my sister and family were living in Geelong we came assisted for a minimum of 2 years. It became 3 years with lots of travelling and I made good money with contract design.In1970 we went back to Germany by ship again. It didn’t take us long to evaluate the possibilities for the future. In 1972 we came back!!I was offered a good job at Fords and we bought the house in Leopold which we still occupy. In 1984 I opened  my own business and since then worked from home as a consultant engineer in the field of pressure vessels &  storage of dangerous goods.I stopped working being 70 and a good friend ( K. Allender ) and member of the woodworkers nudged me to take on woodwork too.I became very sick in 2008 and Keith said:”If you don’t get off your backside you won’t get better!!” ( Using an Aussie term for backside). He introduced me to the club and in his shed showed me how to make woodchips!!!!

We have a son who is happily married and gave us two wonderful granddaughters. So here I am working with wood as a hobby. The second best thing that happened to me!! I also enjoy gardening, fishing and classical music!!!

I Joined the royal marines at 17 years old.  Served at sea on aircraft carriers.  Then with 3 Commando (CDO) Brigade in the Middle and Far East.  Gained High School Certificate with the Marines.  I was medically discharged after 11 years.  I then joined the RAF Regiment.  I served with them for 7 years without disclosing previous service.  My previous medical discharge (an injury to my arm) was eventually discovered. On moving to Australia I bought a company manufacturing hospital equipment, beds,
