Next month we launch our Winter Regional Leadership Conference in Baltimore, Maryland with an executive reception for local and small businesses, secondary and post secondary educators, executives, government officials and corporate sponsors. We encourage members to help introduce NBDPA and the National Technology Conference to our host community BEFORE we arrive in Baltimore next August. Our goal is to garner support, sponsorships, and incentivize participation in local communities in an effort to have a very successful conference with local participation. The weekend continues with the National Board of Directors Meeting and Leadership Training Workshops. Members and chapter officers are invited to attend. Registration information will be posted on your National BDPA calendar.

NBDPA’s Hartford, Hampton Roads, Houston and Greater Birmingham chapters are now prepped and well positioned to return on-line this quarter. Vice President of Membership Management, Chad White and each of our Regional Directors are diligently working with local leadership to assist when needed.

February is Black History month and toward this end, BDPA Chapters across the country will conduct various Black Family Technology Awareness Week (BFTAW) activities from Sunday, February 12 through Sunday, February 19. Check your Chapter’s local calendar for related events near you. I will host a special BFTAW activity with NBDPA’s Philadelphia Chapter during the 2012 Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) STEM Conference on Saturday, February 19th at the Philadelphia Marriott.

I look forward to NBDPA reaching greater heights in advancing African Americans in all information and communication technology (ICT) industries. I know that each and every one of you will do your share by volunteering with local Chapters or at the National level, donating to our scholarship fund, and encouraging your peers to join this great organization. Please enjoy this issue and read my blog to discover more about NBDPA.

Warm wishes,

Monique F. Berry

SAM’S CLUB NAMES HBCU ALUMNA AS NEW CEO

Rosalind Brewer Promoted to President and CEO

Bentonville, Ark—As it approaches its new fiscal year, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (NYSE: WMT) last month announced a number of changes across the business, drawing on a deep bench of internal talent.

"We are very intentional about developing talent to meet the needs of our rapidly growing business worldwide," said Walmart President and CEO Mike Duke. "The promotions we are announcing today are clear evidence that our succession and management development programs work, and that we have highly talented, well-rounded and experienced business leaders ready to step into larger roles when the opportunities arise."

Sam's Club past President and CEO Brian Cornell, 52, recently informed the company that he and his wife would like to move back to the Northeast for family reasons.

With his departure, Rosalind G. Brewer, 49, was promoted to president and CEO of Sam's Club, reporting to Duke, effective Feb. 1. Brewer, a 1984 Spelman College graduate, was most recently president of the Walmart U.S. east business unit, where she was responsible for more than $100 billion in annual revenue, representing almost 1,600 stores and more than 500,000 associates. Brewer was also the first chairperson of the Walmart President's Council of Global Women Leaders.

"Roz came to us with an outstanding background in consumer packaged goods more than five years ago," said Duke. "During that time I have seen her develop into a talented merchant

and retailer. She has strong strategic, analytical and operational skills and has successfully managed a large and complex business. I've also been struck by Roz's servant leadership when I have visited stores with her. She always lets her team do the talking, with her focus being on how to better support their needs." Prior to Walmart, Brewer worked for Kimberly-Clark, progressing through various positions and eventually becoming president of a key business sector in 2004. She is a director of the Lockheed Martin Corporation (NYSE:LMT) and currently serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees at her alma mater Spelman College. She was also selected one of the Most Powerful Women in Business by Fortune Magazine in 2010 and 2011.

Last semester, Brewer shared her vision for Spelman which is to help the College so that all students develop and maintain a global mindset. Her second vision she has is an improved physical infrastructure. She hopes that Spelman get to the point where it can update its technology infrastructure and then its physical plant. “We have to really focus on what’s going to happen

around the community,” Brewer said. “We’re going to be bringing the first Walmart into the Atlanta University (AU) Center, and it should open in the spring. That’s been a personal project of mine to build commerce around the AU Center in a positive, constructive way so that we have a plan.”

Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. serves customers and members more than 200 million times per week at over 10,000 retail units under 69 different banners in 28 countries. With FY11 sales of $419 billion, Walmart employs 2.2 million associates worldwide. Walmart continues to be a leader in sustainability, technology, corporate philanthropy and employment opportunity. Walmart is a global leader in technology systems integrating stores and clubs, supply chains, merchandising and enterprise platforms. bt _______________________________________ Atlanta University (AU) Center member institutions include: Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College. COVER STORY

2012 Black Engineer of the Year STEM Conference | Philadelphia, PA

National Conference to address STEM CHALLENGE: Top Technology Leaders to be Recognized Baltimore, MD—Workforce leaders in industry, education, government, and professionals and students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields will meet in Philadelphia at the annual Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) STEM Conference to address the challenges of recruitment and retention in STEM and promote opportunities in technical and scientific careers.

BEYA is the nation’s largest annual gathering of STEM professionals and leaders committed to increasing the percentage of underrepresented communities in the technology workforce. The twenty-sixth annual conference is hosted by the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, aerospace giant, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and US Black Engineer & Information Technology (USBE&IT) magazine.

According to USBE&IT magazine Publisher and BEYA Chairman Tyrone Taborn, “The need for this initiative is more important than ever. Education is key to American competitiveness, and our nation is falling behind. That’s why leading military officers, U.S. government officials, and Fortune 500 executives have committed to addressing this crisis by attending and supporting the national conference to strengthen the STEM pipeline.”

Taborn also pointed out that, “Fewer young people are selecting STEM study paths as the global demand for technological workers increases. To keep engineering and scientific jobs in the United States, and ensure America maintains her leadership, we need to inspire a new generation of Americans to pursue STEM careers. One way to do so is to spotlight successful role models already in these fields.”

The BEYA STEM Conference—which is scheduled this month, February 16-18, 2012 at the Philadelphia Convention Center and Philadelphia Marriott Downtown in Philadelphia, PA.—will recognize a number of technology leaders who will be acknowledged for their career achievements and their efforts in strengthening the STEM pipeline. Among them is David L. Steward, the chairman and founder of World Wide Technology, Inc., one of the largest African-American-owned technology businesses in the Americas.

About Black Engineer of the Year STEM Conference

The annual BEYA STEM Conference is hosted by US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine, the Council of Engineering Deans of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Lockheed Martin Corporation. This three-day national event brings together students, college administrators, recruiters, engineering and IT professionals, scientists, and high-level decision-makers from the corporate, government, and military communities, in an effort to broaden diversity in this country's technical and scientific workforce. bt

Visioning the Future: From Foresight To Insight To Action!

Premier Sponsors:

Page 14: Newsletter: BDPA Washington DC (Feb 2012)

Reserve your place at the Symposium.

Teleport ten years from today, and you will find a radically different IT landscape. Join us as we leap into the future to discuss emerging IT concepts and leadership trends.

Visioning the Future: From Foresight to Insight to Action

Dr. Bob Johansen kicks off the symposium at the morning plenary session.

Participants will learn how to unleash the power of:

• Foresight – envisioning a future that is very different than today

• Insight – understanding a complex global IT environment

• Action – learning what tomorrow’s successful leaders need to do right now

Dr. Bob Johansen is among the first social scientists to explore the impact of the Internet on

organizations. A ten-year forecaster, Bob works with top corporations to provoke thought and evoke action.

Digital Natives: The Next Generation of Knowledge Workers

As the Baby Boom generation moves toward retirement, “digital natives” will fill those

slots and become the next wave of knowledge workers. When this group moves into

positions of leadership, they will bring concepts, expectations and approaches to the

workplace that are distinctly different than traditional models.

Attend this panel discussion and learn how digital natives will innovate, collaborate

and change work patterns in the near future. Examine how to develop organizational

processes that align with the culture of digital natives and discover why doing so is essential to enterprises that strive

to gain a competitive edge.

Leadership for an Uncertain World

The next ten years will require leaders to navigate within a world of volatility, uncertainty,

complexity and ambiguity.

Are you prepared for success in this environment? How can you improve your readiness?

Come to this session and learn about the skills you will need to be a truly effective leader

in the next decade.

Entrepreneurship: New World, New Opportunities

The evolving business world opens up challenges and opportunities for tomorrow’s

IT entrepreneurs.

Using the FORESIGHT to INSIGHT to ACTION model, participants will be led, in a

working session, to identify key emerging business trends and innovative approaches

to building and sustaining business ventures.

Symposium topics:

Page 15: Newsletter: BDPA Washington DC (Feb 2012)

Future World of Education

Our educational system is not delivering the diverse talent needed for today’s marketplace.

So imagine how much worse that disparity will be in the future if we fail to make dramatic

changes right now.

Innovative thinking and a fresh look at technology in the classroom are key to preparing

students for STEM-related professions, particularly those students coming from traditionally underserved/under-

performing segments of the country. According to employment projections, jobs in the fastest growing industries will

require technology-based skills. Learn how IT business leaders can better fill that pipeline by taking action today.

Cisco: The CIO/CDO Intersection for Collaboration and Innovation

In November, 2010, Cisco and ITSMF pioneered a roundtable of Chief Diversity

Officers and Chief Information Officers with the objective of exploring a more collab-

orative relationship between CIOs and CDOs to drive business value for companies

worldwide. That work is culminating in the publication of a jointly authored white paper.

Join the conversation as we reveal the findings of this initiative and explore how IT will

be leveraged to facilitate a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work environment.

From the smart electric power grid and electronic health records to atomic clocks, advanced nanomaterials, and computer chips, innumerable products and services rely in some way on technology, measurement, and standards provided by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Founded in 1901, NIST is a non-regulatory federal agency within the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST's mission is to promote U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology in ways that enhance economic security and improve our quality of life. NIST carries out its mission through the following programs:

• the NIST Laboratories, conducting world-class research, often in close collaboration with industry, that advances the nation's technology infrastructure and helps U.S. companies continually improve products and services; • the Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership, a nationwide

network of local centers offering technical and business assistance to smaller manufacturers to help them create and retain jobs, increase profits, and save time and money; and • the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program, which promotes

performance excellence among U.S. manufacturers, service companies, educational institutions, health care providers, and nonprofit organizations; conducts outreach programs; and manages the annual Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award which recognizes performance excellence and quality achievement; • From 2007 to 2011, NIST provided cost-shared grants through the

Technology Innovation Program, and between 1990 and 2007, it managed the Advanced Technology Program.

NIST's FY 2012 resources total $750.8 million from the Consolidated and Further Continuing Appropriations Act of 2012 (P.L. 112-55), with an estimated additional annual income of $62.7 million in service fees, and $128.9 million from other agencies. The agency operates in two locations: Gaithersburg, Md., (headquarters—234-hectare/578-acre campus) and Boulder, CO, (84-hectare/208-acre campus). NIST employs about 2,900 scientists, engineers, technicians, and support and administrative personnel. Also, NIST hosts about 2,600 associates and facility users from academia, industry, and other government agencies. In addition, NIST partners with 1,400 manufacturing specialists and staff at about 370 MEP service locations around the country. bt

PMW-160 and SPAWAR provide the U.S. Navy with network fabric and services used by multiple shipboard tactical and business application systems, and routinely install, maintain and train crewmembers in operational and maintenance procedures. New threats in the Asia-Pacific Region and enemies aggressively seeking asymmetric avenues of approach in the cyberspace domain have created unique and unprecedented opportunities for STEM-IC (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math—Intelligence/Cyber) careers across all sectors of industry. Local BDPA Chapters provide STEM career and pipeline programs, workshops, host National and Regional Technology conferences in direct support of these industry initiatives.
