President’s Report As I put pen to paper, we enter another exciting month with events for everyone, Including the wood shows which come around this time of the year. Having to take the opportunity to engage myself with the different branches of our club, I marvel at the work that has been turned out. At the moment the machinery group is busy making an Appalachian Dulcimer, under the watchful eyes of David Praeger. We should see some interesting instruments in the near future. Until next month, Ian Want

Club Equipment & Training STOP BLOCKS - Maurie has gone to the trouble of making stop blocks for the drop saws in the club. These blocks are painted bright red with words ‘’Stop Blocks, do not throw out’’ clearly visible on them. They are used by clamping them to the saws so an exact length of wood can be cut numerous times by sliding the timber along till it meets the block. It makes repetitive cutting faster and more accurate. If you see anyone putting these sacred blocks in the bin you are to retrieve the blocks and substitute their place in the bin with the perpertrator. MISSING PART OF MAGNIGYING LIGHT The club recently purchased 6 magnifying lights for the scroll saw group. Five were successfully fitted to the

tables on which the scroll saws are located. However one of the boxes containing the lights had been

opened and the clamping bracket which holds the light has been taken. This renders one of the lights

unusable and if anyone knows about this would you please contact someone in the committee or Rod G.

SAFETY ISSUE Here is an interesting article re safety when cutting timbers courtesy of club member Graeme L CFA moves to prevent fungus infections from firewood - CFA ...

Last year Glenaladale CFA Captain Rick O’Haire encouraged his long term friend John Hine to share his

story. In June 2016 John contracted the Cryptococcal fungal infection after cutting Redgum firewood at this

farm in Woodglen. This particular fungus can generally be found in Redgum, Bluegum, and Blackwood and

probably many other timbers and soils.

A simple face mask can protect against Cryptococca.

REMINDERS SHARPENING OF TURNING TOOLS

Handouts on the correct use of sharpening tools were handed out and these are part of the accredited training program on how to use jigs for the correct sharpening of the tools.

These jig settings are not to be changed under any circumstances.

Steve recently conducted some instruction sessions on tool sharpening. Those who attended are reminded

that until they prove to Steve that they have the necessary abilities they ARE NOT ACCREDITED to use the

club equipment to sharpen tools. As at 4th April no one has yet approached Steve for accreditation.

WOOD TURNING CHISELS

All the club woodturning chisels are clearly branded on the handles with blue and yellow paint. A complete

set of chisels has been removed from the club premises with one having been taken from each rack. The

removal of these chisels without the club’s consent can only be described as theft and they must be

returned to the club. If you have mistakenly taken them, return them immediately!!!

Charlie B reports that wood is being removed from the wood shed and payment has not been made into the club. Payment should be made by writing your name and the amount on the list on the notice board and then place monies in the box near the notice. The club goes to great deal of time and effort to acquire and process the timber and at some expense to individual members who supply vehicles and the use of their chain saws to mill the timber. The prices are marked on the wood and are probably the cheapest in South East Queensland.

So be fair to all in the club and pay for what you take.

LINISHER

Club members are again reminded that the linisher is for SANDING ONLY and not to be used as a

thicknesser. If you want to reduce the thickness of timber is not the way to go as it wears out the belts

unnecessarily. You are also reminded when using the linisher make sure that no glue has seeped out of any

joins as again this will ruin the belts. Make sure all the glue has been removed prior to sanding.

Articles of Interest WEEKLY GROUP SHOW & TELL

The items on display on Wednesdays are usually brought in by the same very small group of club members

and it is not a good representation of work undertaken by others. We need more items to be submitted, be

they failures or fabulous and only by seeing other people’s work we can learn from their mistakes or

successes. This is a valuable resource whereby we can all learn. There are many members who buy wood

from the club but never display their final efforts.

So get on board and bring in your works of art and share your knowledge.

SCROLL SAW GROUP

The Club has recently acquired two new scroll saws to

bring our number up to six. The club has also purchased

magnifying lights for each machine to make the fine

work a little easier. There are about twelve scrollers in

the club of which 6 to 8 attend our classes on the 3rd

Saturday of each month. The group has a set a project

to do from time to time to develop their skills one step

at a time.

The main types of scroll saw work could be catagorised as fret work, intarsia, models, toys and trinket boxes which may include fret work and intarsia. Some of the more experienced scrollers, such as Dave, Col and Ken specialise in their own particular field and some of their work appears regularly in our newsletters e.g. the violin (to the left) made by Col and the fret work which won this month’s competition entered by Dave (pictured above right).

The bonus of scroll sawing is that you don’t need a lot of timber to create something beautiful as quite often they can be made from small leftovers and off-cuts. The scroll saw group has all levels, from beginners to the ‘’Masters’’.

So feel free to come along and see what the group makes.

Turning a Grin A police officer pulls over a speeding car. The officer says, "I clocked you at 80 miles per hour, sir." The driver says, "Gee, officer I had it on cruise control at 60, perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating." Not looking up from her knitting the wife says: "Now don't be silly dear, you know that this car doesn't have cruise control." As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls, "Can't you please keep your mouth shut for once?" The wife smiles demurely and says, "You should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did." As the officer makes out the second ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth, "Darn it, woman, can't you keep your mouth shut?" T he officer frowns and says, "And I notice that you're not wearing your seat belt, sir. That's an automatic $75 fine." The driver says, "Yeah, well, you see officer, I had it on, but took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket." The wife says, "Now, dear, you know very well that you didn't have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you're driving." And as the police officer is writing out the third ticket the driver turns to his wife and barks, "WHY DON'T YOU PLEASE SHUT UP??" The officer looks over at the woman and asks, "Does your husband always talk to you this way, Ma'am?" (I love this part....) "Only when he's been drinking"
