GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

Dear Brothers, Ladies, and Families, Now we are approaching the month of August. A hot summer month. Well Brothers and Ladies, we are having a great year like last year. We all work hard and must keep our Faith for our Council. Let’s keep praying for everyone who needs a prayer. Even if a person does not request a prayer, still pray for him or her; we all need prayer. Once again, thank you Brothers and Ladies for a great past year, and keep up your hard work. In the coming months, we will be having two activities: the St Genevieve Parish Fiesta in September and our Knights of Columbus Mega Bingo in October. We are continuously cleaning old San Jose Cemetery. Brother Jaime Flores and Grand Knight Jose Tapia will be having a meeting once a month with Fr. Theo. FAMILY UNITY NIGHT – Wednesday July 17th: A council tradition that has grown in popularity recently is our monthly potluck dinner social that we call Family Unity Night or “FUN”. The number of families and individuals that attend has increased to an average monthly crowd of about fifty. Most families attending are members of the Knights of Columbus or Ladies Auxiliary, but some are Christians and Gentiles from the area, and just want to share a meal with us. ALL ARE WELCOME! Please spread the word. The highlight of the July Family Unity Night was the celebration of Lady Delia Narvaez’s 85th Birthday. Her friend and Project Oak Tree coworker, Sylvia Corona brought her guitar and provided music for the evening, including leading the congregation in singing “Happy Birthday” Delia’s entire family was there to join in the celebration and Delia was presented a bouquet of flowers from Brother Ruben and Lady Sylvia Corona. Delia’s continual service is appreciated by St. Genevieve Parish and the Knights of Columbus.

FIRST DEGREE EXEMPLIFICATION – Tuesday July 16th: Council 13969 hosts an Entry Degree Exemplification every 3rd Tuesday of the month at our Parish Hall at 7 PM. Our First Degree Team consists mostly of Knights from Council 13969, but other Brother Knights often help in the ceremony. We take pride in helping the community by performing this important traditional ceremony. New candidates are initiated from throughout the Las Cruces area. This month, we initiated new Knights from Santa Rosa de Lima and Immaculate Heart of Mary. We welcome this new group of Brothers and wish them well on their journey to full Knighthood in our fraternity.

Karen Frye Lover of Animals: Karen Frye is devoted to aiding hurt and abandoned animals. In Karen’s words “they are great creatures who I saved, rehabbed, and showed successfully”. Many of the dogs are hybrids, crosses between dog and wolf. They are bought as exotic animals and the owners often do not know how to care for them. They are sent to shelters and immediately euthanized unless someone rescues them. Please write Congressman Heinrich to pass the SAFE Horse Act to ban inhumane slaughter in Mexico and Canada. Also urge Congress to implement safe horse sterilization in the U.S.

• The Day of Reflection scheduled for Saturday August 17th has been cancelled. Please pray for the health of Deacon Lou Roman.

• If you missed the Food Handler’s Training at St. Genevieve’s, another session will be held at St. Albert’s on August 10th. Call 575-522-6202 to sign up.

• Council #13969 hosts an Entry Degree Exemplification every 3rd Tuesday of the month at our Parish Hall at 7 PM. Our Entry Degree Team consists mostly of Knights from Council #13969, but other Brother Knights from other local councils often help in the ceremony. We take pride in helping the community by performing this important, traditional ceremony.

• Grand Knight Jose Tapia, his father Teofilo Tapia, and Brother Stephen Elchlepp have been working with St. Genevieve Parish Historian Rosemary Leyva to improve and beautify the old San Jose Cemetery. There is much work remaining to be done, so this project will continue into the future. Please consider volunteering to help with this project.

• Council jackets are now being ordered. The new prices are slightly higher. If you are interested in ordering a jacket, please contact Jaime Flores.

• Vests are available in a variety of sizes for $30. Contact Brother Jaime Rivera for a vest.
