Annual Implementation Plan 2017 – Good to GREAT

At this point in time, I have not been made aware of any

NEVR (North Eastern Victoria Region) recommended

changes to our AIP 2017. Staff are currently aligning

their teaching, leadership and learning goals to the AIP.

The main features of our AIP for this year are:

Academic Achievement: Consistency of practice –

Explicit Instructional Model; Rigorous assessment;

Improved feedback and reporting; Disciplined and

accountable learning.

Engagement & Wellbeing: Introduction of School

Colours; STAR Learning Goals; Careers planning –

school wide; Co-curricular programs and alignment –

Introduction of Afterschool Homework Program.

Ashwood High School Branding; New budget process;

Strategic resourcing and alignment; Complete Stage 2

of the Building Program; Coherent meeting structure –

aligned with roles and responsibilities; eLearning

Strategy; Partnerships: Ashwood Alliance – Deakin

Principal’s Introductions

New Staff Short Autobiographies

Hello to all staff, students and parents of Ashwood High School. My name is Katie Grounds and I have recently joined the Health and Physical Education team here at Ashwood. I am also the new Flynn House Coordinator, which I intend to lead to victory in 2017! After getting to know many of Ashwood’s happy faces over the past few weeks, I thought it was only fair to share a few facts about myself. Previously I have worked at Mill Park Secondary College and am a graduate from Deakin University. I love to have a joke and wholeheartedly believe the worse it is, the better! This year I will be teaching Health and Physical Education across all year levels and am excited to get to work with so many different students. Finally, I am a high-level swimmer and have competed na-tionally for several years, which means the ever-popular Staff Vs. Student relay just got real in 2017!

Ms Katie Grounds | Flynn House Coordinator/Health/PE Teacher

My name is Lucy Rimmer and I am a new Maths and Science teacher at Ashwood High School this year. I have been very warmly welcomed into the school community, and I am very keen to get to know all of my students and fellow staff members. So far I have attended the Year 11 Camp to Queenscliff and the House Swimming Sports, both of which were great experiences as a new teacher for getting to know the students. I studied at the University of Melbourne, where I first completed a Bachelor of Science and then a Graduate Diploma of Secondary Teaching. I hope to return to University in the next few years and obtain a Masters of Teaching while I continue to work. For now, I am very excited about my new role, and the rewards and challenges that this year will bring.

Ms Lucy Rimmer | Mathematics/Science Teacher

Hello, my name is Mohsen Khalifé, your newly appointed Assistant Principal at Ashwood High School, Curriculum Operations Logistics and Learning. Arrived in Australia as a skilled engineer migrant in the early 1990s, I have since worked in different schools and higher education institutions for over 14 years. My previous position at Sunbury Downs College included leadership of the School Curriculum, Strategic Planning, Performance and Development, and Professional Learning portfolio. I feel privileged to be a part of your team as I have witnessed your achievements and enthusiasm to embrace the change and challenges. I would like to express my gratitude for your amazing support over the past five weeks and for your accommodation of my, sometimes dry, sense of humour. Having completed studies in education and engineering, my interests also lie in psychology, writing poetry and learning about, and communicating with, people with diverse interests and cultural backgrounds. I am so excited about my new role and teaching of ACE and Further Maths this year and for the opportunity to practise my French and German. I look forward to the challenges ahead and getting to know and empower the School community through you.

Dr Mohsen Kahlifé | Assistant Principal

Principal’s Introductions

New Staff Short Autobiographies

Having joined Ashwood High School at the beginning of 2017, this is now my third month being an Ashwood High School Staff member. While I have only just started my journey, I am already full of thrills and idylls. Being welcomed by my amazing colleagues and receiving the support from every member of the Ashwood community has been humbling. Setting out on the challenging but equally rewarding journey with my dear students from VCE through to Year 7 has been very exciting. Switching on my Chinese mind, I can only say way to start the Year of Rooster, a Fire Rooster Year, a year symbolized by trustworthiness and responsibility. After my journey ‘around the world’ where I studied in the US and UK attaining my Masters Degree, I then worked in China collaborating with professionals from all over the world, I am extremely excited and looking forward to the journey in Australia at Ashwood High School. When I am with the right people, I know I am home.

Ms Jessie Tian | EAL Teacher

I studied Food Science and Nutrition at Deakin University and completed my teaching degree at Australian Catholic University. As many of you might already know, I worked as a Multicultural Aide at Ashwood High School last year, which allowed me to gain an appreciation for Ashwood students and the broader community and to get a headstart on how to involve myself in the school as a teacher in 2017. This year I'm teaching Year 7 Science, Year 10 Maths, Year 9 & 10 Health and PE and Year 11 Health and Human Development. As a teacher, I find it rewarding to see students build their confidence and I strongly believe that teaching is about learning. The active participation in class discussions and the enthusiasm to learn have overwhelmed me. I hope I can continue to encourage students that I teach to work towards their goals and aspirations. I am truly blessed to be part of the Ashwood vibe and thank you all for the warm welcome that you have given me into the Ashwood High School community.

Ms Susan Teeuwsen | Health/PE/Maths/Science Teacher

What a lovely warm welcome to have received upon my first day at Ashwood High School. To teach Art, Visual Communication Design and Digital Technology is, to myself, a very rewarding career especially in such a supportive environment. It’s wonderful to see the ongoing development of students as they explore and polish their skills. Equally, the invitation to be involved with ‘STAR’ offers an opportunity to further assist in the enrichment of students to discover their own deeper capacities in forming supportive relationships and a sense of self and greater wellbeing when learning. I look forward to meeting the parents of my students at the upcoming student led conference.

Ms Lizzie Gault | Art/Visual Communication Design/Digital Technology Teacher

As a new staff member at Ashwood High School, I have been busy getting to know

the wonderful and welcoming students and staff. Previously I have taught at Sunbury

Downs College and Jilkminggan School (Northern Territory) and have studied at

Monash and Victoria University. My position at the school as a transition coach helps

new teachers to the profession transition into their new role. I come to this position,

as I have a passion for education and helping those who are starting out as teachers.

Principal’s Introductions

New Staff Short Autobiographies

After almost 30 years working as a research scientist in various fields at the Veterinary School at the University of Melbourne the opportunity came up to leave research and pursue an alternative. I have always enjoyed running and demonstrating practical science experiments to tertiary students so I thought I would see if that could translate to secondary students. After leaving a part-time position at Mooroolbark College I am enjoying my time at Ashwood High School working fours day in the Science Prep Lab and one day in the Art—Design—Technology Prep area. With the changing curriculum and a focus on real world experiments, I hope my experience working as a research scientist can help the students (and the teachers) to understand the experimental procedures, to be safe in the laboratory and to inspire a passion for the sciences.

Mr Garry Barcham | Laboratory Technician

As a CompassOne Technician at Ashwood High School, I have been working for the Department Of Education for almost two years servicing schools in ways to upgrade their current I.T infrastructure. My technical background experience consists of I.T hardware, server migrations and software deployments. My key strengths include being organised and staying on top of my targets and deadlines. Working in information technology means that each day there are always new things to learn and new ideas to discover, many of which, will hopefully be implemented during my time here. My role at Ashwood High School is to develop and improve the existing network as well as the overall IT infrastructure.

Mr Bas Masri | Computer Technician

Hi my name is Andrew Austin and I am the Chaplain at Ashwood High School. I am

Bachelor trained in Youth Work and am currently Studying a Graduate Certificate in

Ministry at Eastern College. My work history is broad ranging from working as an Early

Childhood Educator, to being a Children’s and Families Pastor at the Salvation Army, to

working in the slums of Brazil. I have worked as a Chaplain at Mordialloc College and I

am currently working with fathers and children as the Dads Matter Project Officer at the

City of Casey. I am married and have a 3 year old daughter and am excited to be part of

an enthusiastic and professional team at Ashwood High. Feel free to say hello if you see

me around the school grounds.

Mr Andrew Austin | Chaplain

I graduated from the University of Melbourne. I am currently employed as an Interpretive Multicultural Aide at Ashwood High School, and I was a volunteer in this school last year. Everything here is quite familiar for me, but every day here is novel and interesting. I always feel great to share my passions with the school community. I have been offered many opportunities to improve my work ability, such as helping both international students and local students during class, assisting the International Student Coordinator with student enrolment, subject selection and ongoing learning support, translating and interpreting for EAL students and the parents, and organising homework clubs after school hours. Ashwood High School is a wonderful community with professional teachers, supportive staffs, friendly parents and excellent students. I have a genuine desire to learn new things as I to make a genuine contribution to the school community throughout my time at Ashwood High School.

Despite the fact that we are almost half way through Term 1, I would like to begin by welcoming everyone to the 2017 school year, and in the Year 7 and all new students.

Our start to the year has been excellent and so much has been achieved already. On day one, Year 11 students attended their House meetings and promptly set off for their camp at Queenscliff whilst the Year 12s started their Study Retreat at Deakin University the next day. All reports indicate that good times were had and the programs provided valuable advice on study strategies, management of workloads and tactics for maximising academic achievements.

Uniform: A reminder to all students and families that uniform requirements must be adhered to. All Year 7, 8 and students who have enrolled at the school since 2016 must be attired in the correct items from the ‘New’ uniform list. Please note that this also includes the correct school bag. Other students may transition from the old to the new uniform with the expectation that all students will wear the new uniform from the start of 2019. Details of uniform items and how they are to be worn are outlined in the Student Planner on pages 14 and 15.

The Uniform Policy also stipulates rules pertaining to hair, make up, body piercings and jewellery. Students and families are asked to acquaint themselves with these regulations. Attendance: 2016 Attendance Awards were presented at the first whole school assembly and I’m delighted to say that there was a high proportion of recipients. There were three categories of awards: Gold for students with 100% attendance for the year (this does not include school activities such as excursions or sport); Silver for 99% and Bronze for 98%. These awards are bestowed annually and we sincerely hope that the number of recipients increases each year! Whilst it is nice to receive recognition through an award, it is important to note that regular school attendance is a fundamental factor in determining student academic outcomes and levels of success.

What Chance Has your Child of Being Successful? (Ref: D.E.T)

Page 9: Newsletter - Ashwood High School · Student Recognition and Awards – School Colours – Growing Pride and Achievement; Enhancing the Student Culture School Colours will be unveiled

This is my first year at Ashwood High School as the Assistant Principal, Curriculum Operations Logistics and Learning. Although new to this role, I felt overwhelmed by the level of support I received from staff, parents and students. Having attended the Year 12 Study Retreat at Deakin University early in Term 1 and listening to parent feedback from the various events: the Year 11 Camp, Year 11/12 Parent Information Evening and Year 7 - Compass Information Evening, I would like to commend parents and students for sharing our vision by highlighting the importance of early planning and time management. Thank you to Shelley Haughey, Student Wellbeing and Transition Leader for running the Compass Information Evening early in the year and to the House Coordinators and all staff who prepared for and conducted various school events to ensure that all our students have the best possible start in their studies. I thank all my colleagues for sharing their views and aspirations about the School and for the opportunity to learn more about Ashwood High School through them. Thank you to Brett Moore for his leadership and pursuit of excellence for Ashwood High School. Thank you to Anna Kukuruzovic, Assistant Principal, for her collegiate team approach to problem solving and continued support. Over the last two years, the School has invested a great deal of time, energy and planning into curriculum development and staff professional learning which have resulted in some exemplary student performance. This year, we refined our assessment processes including applying changes to the descriptors that inform the Interim Progress Reports. The changes align reporting structures with our school values and these are aimed at making our assessments more objective. I would like to commend Ms Natalie Same, Head of Curriculum, for her leadership in this portfolio. Thank you to parents in the Education Subcommittee, members of the Teaching and Learning Committee and all staff for their feedback on the Interim Progress Report descriptors. The Student Led Conferences, informed by the Interim Progress Reports, will be held on Wednesday 15 March

2017 (11:00am-7:00pm). The booking for the Student Led Conferences will be open to parents on Thursday 9

March. Information on how to make a booking on Compass will be e-communicated to parents shortly. There will be no teaching classes on this day as this is intended to be student-centred day. On this day, students will be able to reflect upon their learning and the parents can be directly involved with teachers in identifying future improvement strategies. It is expected that students attend Student Led Conferences in full school uniform and to have completed all the preparatory work. I look forward to the opportunity of meeting more parents at the Student Led Conferences. I have observed a very positive climate at Ashwood High School where staff display high levels of professionalism, authenticity and adaptability in a transformational period. The School will be focused on the development of a common instructional model, based on benchmarking and trials. Thank you Chris Tipping, Pedagogy, Partnership & Professional Learning Leader and all staff for embedding the attributes of best teaching practice in the development of this model. Overall, I will be focused on collaborative approaches in curriculum and assessment and professional learning whereby evidence-based performance plans are reflective of high expectations. Staff, emerging leaders and students will be empowered to use their voice to satisfy self-aspiration and connectedness to school life. I am looking forward to work with staff, students, parents and community stakeholders.

SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT

The Year 11 and Year 12 students began the year in a very positive manner with their respective camp and Study Retreat in week 1. This was followed up with a reasonably well attended parent/guardian seminar on the evening of Tuesday 7 February. As we enter week 5 the students are well into their various courses, in many cases having already completed some assessments. I would remind students, parents and guardians to check Compass regularly for VCE SAC and VCAL Outcome dates. The new Senior Learning Centre is open for business with staff and students enjoying the new facilities in the classrooms, staff office and the student study and lunch space. It is pleasing to see the respect with which this space is being treated and the productive use of the study space by the Year 12s. As the workload builds for students please remember to plan ahead, seek assistance as required and keep the school informed regarding any issues as they arise that will impact on a student’s ability to complete tasks. VCE students should also be revising regularly, on top of their scheduled homework, to ensure that they are well prepared for SACs and Exams. It is also important for students to maintain a balance, and for our Year 12 students, for them to be involved and enjoy their final year. On this note it was fantastic to see our most senior students fully involved in the recent Swimming Sports carnival.

A note from our VCAL captain: Hi, my name is Kanitta Sangangam. I’m the VCAL Captain of 2017. The past three weeks has been fantastic, we’ve practiced teamwork by doing activities in Personal Development. In PD we recently went to the gym and had to pass a hoola hoop through to each other in two different groups while timing, then discuss the 5 leadership skills we used while doing the activities. We’ve completed work on Road Safety data/statistic in Numeracy. We are starting to do a skit in Work Related Skills about work safety risks and hazards. We’re having so much fun.

SENIOR SCHOOL REPORT

Year 12 Study Retreat – Deakin University 2-3 February

“The Year 12 Study Retreat at Deakin university was a great experience for us VCE students, we were given advice by various guest speakers and teachers on how to work efficiently and minimise stress. We also went on a tour around the campus to experience the huge university campus and held a House vs House basketball and volleyball competition for team building”.

Tee Sangruang – Year 12 VCE student

“The Year 12 study retreat was an excellent way for me to further understand what is expected of me during my final year, as well as what kind of challenges lie ahead for me. It was a two day experience at Deakin University where we listened to various lectures, played sport against each other’s Houses and most of all, bonded together as a Year 12 collective. For me, this retreat gave me a chance to further understand VCAL as I hadn't done it last year and most of all, meet and interact more with those who I joined. This retreat especially gave me the chance to, like I had previously stated, bond with my year level as a collective. As it is our final year we have all realised that it is our duty to make the most of it, so whilst we sat and listened to many lectures, and did what would seem like boring activities, we shared our goals and our own personal expectations that we have of our final year, and although it was only two days I can gladly say I know each person in my year a little better”.

Erin Buchanan – Year 12 VCAL student

“Ashwood High School 2017 Year 12 Study Retreat would be one of my best High School memories. In these two days of Study Retreat, we were given a lot of lectures about information and tips related to our VCE study in Year 12 and university courses. Such as "What is ATAR?", ‘How could we study more effectively’ and ‘How can we get a good mark on English?’ All of them were going to be very helpful to our Year 12 life. Also, we had many group activities. Through the activities, we were able to have a closer relationships and get to know more about each other by working together. In my opinion, the best part of this retreat was the House Competition. There was no better way to learn more about people than in the competitive activities. In this activity, I surprisingly found out several impressive basketball players and volleyball players. It was always appreciated to have this kind of group activities in the last year of our high school life. I believed that all of us had a good time”.

“From my point of view, Year 12 Study Retreat was fun and also educational. It was a transition from long holidays to busy school days and also a good program for establishing good relationships between students. Year 12 Study Retreat was an excellent program. I would say it was the best one in my two and a half years high school life”.

Rachael Zhang – Year 12 – International Student Captain

ENGAGEMENT, WELLBEING & TRANSITIONS

Welcome back to an exciting 2017. I hope that your holidays were restful and filled with family, friends and loved ones. A HUGE welcome to our new families to Ashwood High School especially our Year 7 families. My name is Shelley Haughey and I am the Student Engagement, Wellbeing and Transitions Leader and I head up the Student Management and Wellbeing Team. This team is designed to ensure that your students are safe and happy while they are learning each and every time they step into class. We have had a busy and exciting start to the year with the first day being a huge success. All students came to their House Assemblies and welcomed by the House Coordinator, STAR teachers and fellow students. The Year 7s then participated in a Transitions Program that introduced them to the ins and outs of High School. Including a special session on IT, and how to use their padlock – which is generally the most stressful and difficult part of starting High School! All our Year 7s now have the hang of this thanks to the support of their peers. The Peer Support Program is well under way also with our Year 9 and 10 students running sessions for the Year 7s to make them feel welcome to the school and be a familiar face to these kids in times of need in this first year. The transition program was topped off with a reflection and question and answer session on Friday afternoon. Here are some reflections from the Year 7s from their first week:

“I used to think the teachers would be really mean – but they aren’t, they are all really nice and caring people” “I used to think that I wouldn’t ever be able to use my padlock but now I can do it every time” “I used to think that classes would be hard to find, but now I can find my way around easily” The final part of our transition program included our parents. On Thursday 9 February we held a welcome barbecue and Compass information session. This was a huge success with over 150 people attending and the Parents and Friends Network providing a barbecue dinner for all. At this evening the compass user names and passwords were handed out and a quick how to session was run. If you need follow up help please call the General Office. After a huge couple of weeks I would like to thank and recognise all the hard work from the Student Management and Wellbeing Team to ensure a smooth first few weeks for all our students. I look forward to a great year ahead.

PEDAGOGY, PARTNERSHIP & PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

2017 is off to another fast start with a number of programs launching across the first few weeks. Once again we are playing host to a number of Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) for the 2017 academic school year. Ashwood High School has a strong reputation for supporting the development of PSTs from a number of universities. These include Deakin University (with whom we have a very strong connection), Monash University, La Trobe University and Australian Catholic University. Completing placement is an important step in the growth of these individuals wishing to become professionals as the necessary skills needed to be an effective teacher can only be gained from authentic experiences. With that said, I would like to introduce the following PSTs (and their mentor teachers) who will be with us throughout 2017. Allison Savage (John Sheehan and Bernie Jowett)

“Hi. My name is Allison. I am a Pre-Service Teacher from Deakin University in my final year of the Bachelor of Secondary Teaching/Bachelor of Arts. Prior to this course, I studied graphic design but realised my passion really lay in education helping students realise their full potential. At university I've studied History, Anthropology and Maths. I am really interested in 21st century history and the way these events have shaped the world in which we live today. In my free time I enjoy painting and swimming. I am really looking forward to my time at Ashwood High School and thank you for welcoming me into your school community”. Molly Gibbins (Karen Bares)

“I’m very excited to be completing my fourth year placement at Ashwood High School. I am a student at Deakin University and will be teaching English and Psychology. I’ve spent time at Ashwood before and I really enjoyed the school environment, including the friendly students and welcoming staff. I ’m looking forward to getting to know the students and staff further while at Ashwood and becoming a real part of the school community”. Erin Laffan (Brigitte Ferguson)

“Hello, Ni hao, My name is Erin Laffan and I am another 4

th year Deakin University pre-service teacher. I am the middle child of

three farm kids, growing up in the outer Ballarat region. I spent my first year of university in South Australia, studying education, before moving back to Melbourne to peruse my love of Drama. My teaching methods are English and Drama, both subjects I have always enjoyed at school and university. I was in Year 12 when I decided I wanted to become a teacher after helping a friend prepare for a make-up SAC. The feeling I got from seeing her work hard and finally succeed is indescribable, but I knew then, that ’s what I wanted to do with my life. I am looking forward to immersing myself in the Ashwood school community, joining in with the Drama Club running at lunch time, and getting to know the students and seeing how they progress through the year. I am excited to be learning from Ms Brigitte Ferguson as I join her classes this year. Thank you for welcoming me into your school.”

ports the Ashwood student literacy development and allows the Deakin University Pre-Service Teachers (PSTs) to develop experience in the classroom. Deakin University students will work one-on-one alongside students in Year 7. A diagnostic test is used to get an effective snapshot of where the Ashwood student is with their reading and writing. The PSTs will be working across a number of Year 7 English classes during Semester One with Ms Felica Mundell, Mr Alistair Rayner and

Ms Natalie Same lending their expertise.

From the university’s perspective we see our beginning teachers having a chance to sit beside a learner to find out just what it takes to plan and run effective lessons. Engaging and challenging young learners helps our PSTs gain empathy and resilience for what it is to be a student in today’s schools. The Principal of Ashwood High School, Mr. Brett Moore, and Pedagogy, Partnerships and Professional Learning Leader, Mr. Chris Tipping, and the Ashwood High School staff have been very warm and welcoming. Mr. Brett Moore clearly has a passionate knowledge of issues that confront PSTs and his gracious support of this program is something Deakin University is very proud of. SCHOOL CAPTAINS’ REPORT

We are delighted to be the 2017 Ashwood High School Captains and consider it an honour to represent the student body. Our roles already have provided us with a deeper understanding of the deci-sion-making factors and processes within the school, as well as extending our experiences and perspectives of different aspects of our school. So far, we have attended a School Council meeting, as well as Education Subcommittee, which is comprised of parents, teachers and students. We welcome student voice, viewpoints and opinions with open arms, and we assist in delivering student voice at such meetings so that balanced and considered decisions can be made. Along with the other members of the Student Leadership team, we have begun planning activities and events which will be implemented throughout this term. This includes the SRC organising a visit to Parkhill Primary School to assist in their curriculum development, and House Leaders preparing the Star Wars activities within Year 7-10 Star Groups. The two of us have both been active and enthusiastic in assisting the house cabinet in planning these activities. In week two, the Student Leaders attended the Year 7 Family barbecue, which was very well attended. It was a great opportunity to speak and connect with the new families of the school, whilst also giving parents the chance to ask us any questions about the student experience. Hopefully this provided them with ease of mind knowing that we are a welcoming school and their children will fit right in here. 2016 Attendance Awards were presented at the first Whole School Assembly in the second week of term. There was a high proportion of students who received awards for outstanding attendance in 2016. There were three categories: Gold for those who had 100% attendance; Silver for 99% and Bronze for 98%. We both were proud to see so many people standing on our PAC stage being recognised for such fantastic attendance. The Year 12s were also individually introduced to the rest of the school and presented with badges, which was a great way to properly inform the new students of who we are. The Year 12 Study Retreat at Deakin University on the 2nd and 3rd of February was very worthwhile. Guest speakers advised us on how to establish and maintain a good study routines throughout the year and study tips for different subjects. We had time to plan and explore ideas for our end of year assembly and slideshow in October. This Study Retreat also assisted us to bond as a cohort and with our teachers so that, together, we can support and assist each other throughout this important year. After hearing feedback from our Year 11 peers, we believe the Year 11 camp was also very enjoyable. 2017 is the year of the Rooster in the Chinese New Year. A tradition at Ashwood High School has developed from this annual event; this being a celebratory luncheon that was held for the International Students. As School Captains, we also attended as representatives of the student body and to show our respect for their traditions and cultures. Rachel Zhang, International Student Captain, made a speech at this event, and Mr Moore presented each student with a red envelope which contained money. The Chinese re-gard the colour red as the symbol of energy, happiness and good luck; so, giving red envelopes is a way to communicate good wishes and luck. Placing money in the red envelope is expected to bestow more hap-piness and blessings on the receiver, and it is considered impolite to open the envelope in front of the per-son who gives it to you. This was quite a formal ceremony, lightened by Mr Moore’s efforts to start his speech with a Chinese phrase. Despite having practised it, it was clear that the Chinese students had no idea of what he was saying - but on Mr Moore’s second attempt at pronunciation, he got it right, to the delight and cheers of students. The House Swimming Carnival was also a successful day, despite the overcast conditions and slightly chilly start. The student attendance rate was excellent with most supporting their Houses by jumping into the pool and trying their best. Those who were reluctant, or couldn’t swim, still contributed to the House spirit by help-ing or enthusiastically cheering their team members on to victory. We anticipate even greater competition and friendly rivalry at the Athletics Carnival!! The Year has had a great start, and both of us are anticipating many more fantastic things to come this year.

HOUSE CORNER

Welcome back to everyone in 2017! We would especially like to welcome all of the new students starting at Ashwood High School this year, in particular our large Year 7 group who through a very successful transition program have overcome their early nerves and begun to settle well into Ashwood High School life. This was most evident in the recent House Swimming carnival where it was fantastic to see so many student participating in a range of events, assisting with the running of the day or through the cheering on of their House. It was a great day and a testament to the strong House spirit of students at the school. Congratulations go to Paterson House on their victory; Ms Ferguson was very proud. An important part of the House structure at Ashwood is the development of leadership skills among the student body and we would like now to introduce the House leadership team for 2017 and have asked each of them to say a little about themselves;

Cowan House Captain: Kevin Lee

My name is Kevin and I am the proud House Captain of Cowan in 2017. I personally enjoy playing a wide variety of sports and love to spend my time reading. My goal for Cowan is for students to overcome their limits and challenge themselves in different events. I love table tennis and working with computers, as well as learning and my favourite subject is Accounting. My plan for Melba this year is to re-shape STAR wars to be more fun for everyone, as well as to improve participation in the House performances.

Vice-Captain: Andrew Samson-Loxton

Hello, I am Andrew and I am the Vice-Captain of Melba house. I'm an active member of the Camberwell Lacrosse Club, and I also like to ride and fix bicycles in my spare time which is something I really enjoy. In my role I will focus on encouraging more students to become involved in more physical activities. I would like Ashwood to be even more active in the sporting field as we are already strong academically.

Flynn House Captain: Chelsea Dunstan

Hi my name is Chelsea and I’m the Flynn Captain for 2017. Last year I was Flynn Vice- Captain and it’s going to be great to work with a new team. This year I’m in Year 11 and studying Maths, English, Visual Communications, Legal Studies, Year 12 Psychology and Year 12 Food Studies and I’m really excited to be a school leader in 2017.

Vice-Captain: Chloe Allen

Hi my name is Chloe and I'm the Vice-Captain of Flynn. Outside of school I play basketball and I enjoy playing AFL. I'm looking forward to getting to know more people in the school and helping them out. Flynn is a great House and I have been in STAR group one since my first day. As a House we have won 2 years in a row! Go Flynn!!!

Rachel was not available to provide this brief biography, however we know that she is excited about her position as Paterson Captain in 2017 and is really looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Vice-Captain: Katriana Fernando

Hi everyone, my name is Katriana and I'm so excited to be the Paterson Vice-Captain for 2017! I've been at Ashwood for just over a year now and I'm loving every part of being a proud Paterson ‘wolf’. Rachel and I have a lot of plans for the House and we are hoping it will be a really great year.

We have started Term 1 with 52 international students on site at Ashwood High School. Out of this number, 24 students are new to the school, having completed 21 weeks of intensive English at different English Language Centres. Our international students came mainly from different parts of China such as Shenzhen, Dalian, Urumqi, Guangdong, Xiamen, Beijing, Jiangxi, Xian, Harbin, Changsha and Zhejiang. We also have students from South Korea, Hong Kong and Iran. We are proud of the fact that the international students have chosen Ashwood High School for their high school study plans. The students, their families and their education agents are very aware that we offer the international students a safe, secure and caring environment with a strong focus on student success and achievement. Our international students are mainly enrolled in the senior level - Years 10 to 12. However, recently, we have enrolled students in Years 7 to 9. Ashwood High School has established an excellent reputation for its learning programs.

More than 70% of our students are here without their families. The school is responsible for their welfare and accommodation. We have 40 students living in homestay arrangements organised by the school. The school puts a lot of thoughts and effort in matching students with their homestay families. This year, the International Student Captain is Rachel Zhang. Rachel has been nominated and won several awards for academic excellence. She will be an inspiration to the new students. Lunar New Year – The Year of The Rooster

The Lunar New Year is one of the most important and significant events in the Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean calendar. In homes in China, Vietnam, and Korea, families get together for reunion dinners, paying homage to ancestors and deities and lighting firecrackers to ward off evil. Parents put money in red packets or envelopes to bless their children with luck, prosperity and success. Ashwood High School celebrated the Chinese New Year by holding a New Year Lunch for all its international students on Thursday 9 of February. The Principal Mr Brett Moore, represented the parents of the international students by presenting red envelopes to each of the international students. This important and significant ritual was indeed well received by the students.

Curriculum and Assessment

Welcome Ashwood families to 2017! What an exciting start of the year it has been – our new curriculum is in full swing and there is a vibrant buzz of learning within our new facilities and learning spaces that have recently opened. It’s important that by now, all students have the required books and materials for every subject. You can obtain a copy of the 2017 booklist from the General Office or contact your child’s subject teacher for information and clarification. In addition to this, all students should have an Ashwood High School Planner and be using it regularly to record and prioritize their homework and study. You can assist your child to ensure they are recording their homework accurately and working consistently to manage their workload, and not leaving tasks until the last minute. If you haven’t already done so, make sure you have explored and know how to access the Parent Portal on Compass. This is the centralized location where you will find all information about events, programs and other news items, as well as the place where you can access lesson-to-lesson information about your child’s learning program. If you have any concerns about your child’s learning, please contact their House Coordinator, STAR group teacher or subject teacher as appropriate. Interim Progress Reports

Interim Progress Reports are a reflection of how the classroom teacher has perceived the progress of your child so far this semester. We hope in most cases this will be a positive reflection and you should attend the forthcoming Student Led Conferences with your child to discuss their progress in more detail. A full report will be provided at the end of Semester 1. At Ashwood High School we measure what value, and therefore the Areas of Assessment on the Interim Progress Reports reflect the school's C.H.O.I.R values. C - Learning Participation & Active Engagement (Community) refers to the extent the student is an

active member of class activities in a way that improves their learning and contributes to the ‘class com-munity’.

H - Learning Effectiveness (High Expectations) refers to the extent the student demonstrates produc-tivity, effectiveness and efficiency, and the extent to which they are focused on their learning and consistently do the best they can, working effectively within the given timeframe.

O - Learning through Reflection (Optimism, Reflection, Resilience) refers to the extent the student improves the quality of their work, and if needed their behaviour, based on feedback.

I - Learning Independence (Innovation, Creativity, Sustainability) refers to the extent the student is able to work independently in a productive and self-regulated manner.

R - Learning Attributes & Respectful Behaviour (Respect) refers to the extent the student demon-strates respect for the learning of others.

Each value is rated as Always, Usually, Sometimes, Rarely, Never or Not Applicable.

Interim Progress Reports will be published on Compass on Wednesday 8 March at 4:30pm. Student Led Conferences

Student Led Conferences will be held on Wednesday 15 March from 11:00am – 7:00pm. There will be no timetabled classes on this day, apart from VET Music. As their name suggests, those conference are designed to be ‘student led’, using their Interim Progress Reports, as well as the ‘Student Led Conferences – Preparation’ document as the basis for discussion, reflection and feedback. This document (to be completed during STAR group), instructs students to reflect on their reports by answering the following questions for each subject:

1. What are you most proud of? Why did you get these results?

2. When/how do you learn best?

3. What can we do (student/parent/teacher) to ensure that you optimize your learning?

4. Set a goal and an action/strategy based on responses to questions 2 & 3. Students should complete the pro-forma and bring it to their conferences. This will then be followed up in subsequent STAR group sessions, where students will set their Semester 1 Personal Learning Goals. Parents will be able to book interviews times with teachers through Compass from Thursday 9 March at 9:00am. Please contact the General Office if you require assistance with your bookings. English/Humanities/LOTE

Keep an eye on the Compass Newsfeed for information about competitions in English, French and Humanities. This week you can find out about the HAIKU competition which closes on 17 March. Check the Compass news-feed for details. Year 8 ACE English – Book Review

'Lord Of The Flies' is a short novel written by William Golding, depicting the story of a group of schoolboys who are stuck on an island after a plane crash. Golding explores the darkness within one's heart, using a great deal of description of surroundings and a large vocabulary. He looks at each boy's personality and troubles, with each boy having a part in the story. The story follows the boys as they discover that their beautiful island is quite terri-fying at night. They play with the ideas of adults, needing to mature as they discover that they must kill to survive in their harsh reality. Golding puts a great deal of detail in each boy and their eventual turn to darkness as well as how the island is seen. 'Lord Of The Flies' is a classic worth reading that opens the eyes to the fact that darkness exists within light. The story itself is a great read and has a great plot, although, the vocabulary is complex and the novel would be read more easily by teenagers or adults. It is also written in a slightly different way than popular books nowadays, so read with an open mind.

Year 9A English – What is Utopia? UTOPIA: a perfect world; a place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics, laws, customs and conditions. As part of their study of the text ‘Uglies’, students considered their own concepts of utopia: “If I planned an utopian world, it would be full of kind people. I think there should be more family time, spent well”. Emmelle Berenger “My utopian society would never contain anger, rage or jealousy because everyone would be equal and shown how to love and care”. Eric Peters “There are no cars or gas stations as everyone has their own wings to get to places. There would be no such thing as pretty or ugly as everyone would see each other for their personalities”. Nicole Dreyer “Everyone has his or her own definition of utopia. My utopia isn’t a perfect world, society or place. My utopia is a moment of perfect happiness”. Julia Moeller “There is no cancer, tumours or terminal illness”. Emma Mahon “My utopia is a place or world of peace, love, mercy and hope. All kids would have parents to come home to”. Tommy Bradley Malcolm “..an amazing place where there are no crimes, no deaths and no sickness. It’s a place where everyone respects each other. My utopia is a world with no discrimination or racism”. Tyrone Tasker “My type of world would include no hunger, compulsory education and no getting married until the age of twenty-five”. Henry Tupou “Of course it would have the predictable “world peace, no illness, no poverty…” but I would also like rock music to still be popular; unicorns galloping along the hills; and with careful spying on the fairies as they paint butter-flies’ wings”. Lizzie Silk “Is it even possible? My utopia now will be different to the one I may want in a few years’ time”. Sarah Lobbe “I would want people to be treated equally and fairly”. Harry Jones “An utopia can exist if it consisted of a group [of people] who share likes and values”. Huon Diggins

On Wednesday 22 February, Mr Cifra’s Science class had the opportunity to listen to members of the RAAF and the chance to use some of the equipment that Australian Airforce brought to Ashwood. All this gear will head to the Melbourne Air show in March. We tried the fighter jet flight simulator that was in a trailer on the top oval, then we could try on the pilots’ gear. There were VR headsets which showed F16 demonstration flight and this was really cool. We all had fun and were full of knowledge because of this experience.

So far in Year 12 Chemistry, we’ve done a lot of work on topics relating to fuels and chemical energy. While there is a lot of theory involved, it is really enjoyable when we get to do practical investigations that test our understanding of the Chemistry concepts we have studied. Such investigations include observations of exothermic and endothermic reactions and generating hydrogen gas. We all have different reasons for choosing to do Chemistry in Year 12. “I personally chose it because I learnt about Chemistry in Year 8 and I really enjoyed it. I decided to continue with it into VCE even though I don’t think I will pursue a career involving Chemistry”. Mitchel

“I chose Chemistry because I enjoy it and because I want to work in the pharmaceuti-cal industry”. Sargar

“I chose Chemistry because I really enjoyed it last year and I am really interested in sciences, particularly Psychology and Chemistry. Doing Chemistry in Year 12 will keep my options open for possible career pathways”. Kevin

We are looking forward to designing our own research investigation on Food and Energy in Term 2.

Visual Communication, Design & Technology

Design as Career

Ashwood High School has a fantastic and vibrant Arts, Design and Technology curriculum. Students often won-der where their love of design might take them as a career. During the summer I contacted a number of former Ashwood High School VCE Visual Communication Design students to see where their passion for design has taken them. I was a very proud teacher to see how their skills have developed, and to hear about the diverse and exciting opportunities that they have embraced post secondary school.

Ms Catherine Preston | Visual Communication, Design & Technology

Julia Condon, Class of 2014 Bachelor of Fashion Design (Honours), RMIT

The Bachelor of Fashion Design teaches us everything we need to learn to go into the fashion industry. From pattern making and garment construction all the way to embroidery and learning how to make a professional fashion film. There’s more to explore in the fashion industry than what you may think and that’s one of things I love most about what I get to do. In my second semester of second year, I chose to do knitwear as my studio subject, which I really enjoyed because my favourite aspect of my course is the hands-on work we get to do. I love experimenting with different textures and really working with the design principals to create something unique. I have also applied for a student exchange to a fashion school in Europe for my second semester of 3rd year, which I am really excited about. At the end of my first year at university, I applied for an internship to work with a fashion designer called Mary Katrantzou in London for four months. I was lucky enough to get it and it was so far the best experience I have had in my life. I got to work on two collections for the embroidery department and got to experience London Fashion Week and the craziness of being apart of a professional fashion house. I know this sounds weird, but some of the best skills I learnt at high school that I use most now has been the abil-ity to make friends. The friends I have made at university are some of the most amazing people I have in my life and because they are doing the same things as me, in terms of balancing university work with life, they under-stand all the struggles that you go through. A lot of people think that fashion students are very competitive with each other, but there is a real “camaraderie” between us all. Also networking is one of the most important parts of studying because it’s these people that can help you find a job in the future. The advice I would give to current Ashwood design students is that when you decide what part of design you want to base your folios on make sure it’s based on something that you enjoy doing. The one thing I hate doing is wasting my time on something I don't enjoy. Also, don't be afraid to be experimental with your research and development, as in: go to places, be hands on with different textures and ways of designing, this can draw something out that you would not have thought of in the first place. If you really want to pursue design as a career you need to understand what you need to do to pursue that life and that is having passion and dedication.

Visual Communication, Design & Technology Katelyn Ker, Class of 2015 Diploma of Visual Merchandising, RMIT My course is a lot like going to school and only studying VCE Visual Communication Design! We have a class for technical drawings by hand, and one for using computer programs such as AutoCad, Photoshop and Illustrator, one for learning to use tools to make and build props and a class on design history. We also have our main visual merchandising class where we use all of the skills from our other classes to create displays in the windows around RMIT! Some of my favourite experiences, during my course, have been trying out new things, like using the vinyl cutter to make our own stickers, or when my class had to create a little pop-up shop within our classroom. Students can take part in special opportunities such as helping set up the marquees for the Melbourne Cup, which is a really cool opportunity. Also a number of stores offer internships for RMIT students. The things that I learnt at high school, that I use in my current course, are a lot of the things we learnt in VCE Visual Communication Design. This definitely gave me a massive head start over a few people in my class, already knowing how to do technical drawings, draw in perspective and use Adobe Illustrator, which was such a massive help. My advice to students who are studying design at school is to do something that you really enjoy.

Parry Mourikis, Class of 2015 Diploma of Graphic Design, Holmesglen I am really enjoying my Diploma of Graphic Design and hope to continue on into the Bachelor at Deakin in 2018. My course has taught me many new things, such as using different methods of print-presses, the history of printing, book-binding, and further enhancing my Adobe skills. I have learnt how to make a saddle stitched booklets, and I can draw hyper-realistically now. The best experience of the course so far is the packaging design for a skincare company that I created. Holmesglen is fantastic for providing many workplace opportunities and I continue to use everything that I learnt in VCE Visual Communication. My advice to current design students at Ashwood would be to always keep refining you're work, always have your client analyze your work, and always take on board constructive feedback. The most important thing however, is to never settle for anything just because they think that it's "good enough", always aspire to create the best work they can.

Cameron Ogilvie, Class of 2015 Bachelor of Games Development, Majoring in Games Programming My course covers many areas, such as: principles of game design, programming, how to use design to influence players, different theories of design and design principles. The best experiences of the course so far have been making games in groups, learning programming and game design, and showcasing my games to the general public. We often have guest lectures from different companies working in the industry and all my lecturers have worked, or currently work, in the industry. Some of the things I have most used from high school are design elements such as shape, form and colour in the game aspects, but everything else of design in logo creation and other art creations. I have also used maths. The advice I would give to students studying design at high school is to follow what you want to do and design what you want to design. Also, put in heaps of hours with designs and don't gloss over anything.

On Tuesday 14 February, love was in the air in the form of the Ashwood High School Swimming Carnival. The whole school made their way to the Oakleigh pool and competed against one another for house points. We had excellent attendance and student’s behaviour and sportsmanship were commendable. Special congratulations to the winning house, Paterson, led by House Coordinator Brigitte

Ferguson, Rachel Fidock (House Captain) and Katriana Fernando

(Vice House Captain). Paterson got out to an early lead and never looked back. Once again, well done to all students who participated and all staff who helped on the day. We now turn our focus to the Cross Country Carnival which is coming up on Friday 24 March.

s) ACCELERATED CURRICULUM AND ENRICHMENT PROGRAM (ACE)

The second year of Ashwood High School’s Accelerated Curriculum & Enrichment program is underway, with classes now at the Year 7 and Year 8 levels, following an extended application and testing process. Students participate in separate classes in English, Science, French, Humanities & Philosophy, and Mathematics. The Program offers an academically rigorous and enhanced curriculum that fosters higher ordered thinking skills – including inquiry and creativity – in addition to achieving greater breadth and depth in academic content. An example of the enriching curriculum that the ACE Program offers in Humanities & Philosophy includes the ‘Unanswerable Questions’ project, where students chew on some of life’s big questions, such as: ‘What if there was life after death?’; ‘Can there be happiness without sadness’; and ‘What is reality?’ Students research their question by analyzing and creating various artifacts, they establish hypotheses to try and prove, and develop their critical and creative thinking skills. In the ACE Program, students regularly reflect on their learning by completing weekly evaluations in their Learning Journals. In these journals, students reflect on what they have learnt, how they learn best and identify what questions they have and what they can’t do. These reflections help them to establish and them work towards achieving their goals, as outlined in their own individualized Education Learning Plans.

Ms Natalie Same | Head of Curriculum/ACE Coordinator

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Instrumental lessons have commenced for keyboard, violin, singing, drums, bass guitar and guitar. Woodwind and brass lessons will begin in the near future. Our new Year 7’s have settled into the routine well and are referring to Compass to see their timetabled lessons. We look forward to following their progress along with all of our Year 8-12 musicians. If you are interested in your child taking Instrumental Lessons in the future, please feel free to ring Ms Mundell on 98071333 as we have some vacancies and hire available for some instruments. We are already working towards the Acoustic Night which is planned for early Term 2. Students will be advised of the actual date in coming weeks. This is a lovely way for students to perform at an intimate occasion and has proven to be a very popular event on the calendar during previous years. We are often surprised by the hidden talent amongst some of our students as they grace the stage for the first time. We are delighted to see strong numbers for our choir this year, including males and females, building on from the hard work and exciting public performances from last year. The choir is currently working on a big production number with our talented musicians to be performed publicly to students and parents. There is great excitement surrounding this special song so we can’t wait to perform it for you. The choir meets at Wednesday lunchtimes in the newly refurbished Music Centre and we welcome any new members. Simply bring your lunch along and meet our friendly and very sociable group. Several brass, string and woodwind students have been meeting Ms Mundell on Friday lunchtimes to continue our mixed ensemble which is a great way to build up your musicianship skills and share your interest in playing music with other like-minded students. Similarly the guitar ensemble will run on Thursday Lunchtimes with Mr Simondson in the new music practice rooms. Year 7 Music classes are also starting to prepare for the Year 7 Spectacular making a great effort in singing and playing their Instruments. The Year 8 Music classes are developing a blues repertoire as the theme for Term 1 and Year 9 Music students are venturing into independently rehearsing small group performances. We are thoroughly enjoying the new facilities which include the newly appointed Music classroom, fully equipped Instrumental Music rooms and we are very excited to see the new recording studio up and running soon thanks to Mr Pilois for his work on this project so far. We look forward to a very rewarding year in 2017 and we invite you all to attend the events on the Music Performance Calendar. See you there.

YEAR 11 RETREAT

On Wednesday, 1 February the Year 11 cohort headed off on a three day retreat to Queenscliff. After arriving we were treated to lunch, quickly unpacked and headed off to our group rotation activities. This included boogie boarding, canoeing and beach activities such as beach cricket, rugby and swimming. On the first night after dinner, we all sat down and set our long and short term SMART goals for the year. Setting these goals really helped us look at our future and what steps we can take to achieve these. SMART goals are an effective way to achieve this as it provides a simple framework to create your goals. On Thursday morning we took a walk on the beach to look at the rock pools and the lovely coastal region. We saw some interesting creatures such as a Port Jackson Shark and various shellfish. After the walk we finished our rotations and came home to relax for the rest of the evening. Having some time to socialise with the rest of our cohort was fun and enjoyed by everyone who attended. On Friday morning, Jesse from ELEVATE talked to us about how to be efficient and effective VCE/VCAL students. We learnt about skills such as time management and how to study efficiently. Jesse presented this information in an interesting way and made everyone laugh. Overall our Year 11 the students found the retreat very rewarding and enjoyed the endless games of scrabble, spoons, beach and preparing for our year ahead.

Breakfast Clubs

Some of you may be aware of two great breakfast programs that run during the week

at Ashwood High. Established by Robbie, a previous Chaplain at the school these

two breakfast clubs provide an opportunity for students to have a hearty and tasty

breakfast before the start of the school day. On Wednesday morning the Camberwell

Salvation Army provides toasties for students at breakfast club which students can’t

get enough of. Led by the Camberwell Salvation Army’s Youth Pastor Kyle Schroder

the team provides a great service to the Ashwood High Community. On Fridays the

Ashburton Baptist Church in collaboration with the Encounter Baptist Church also

provide a Breakfast Club. Led by Liz Jones and Paul Riessen the team provides pan-

cakes, toast, fruit and hot chocolates for the students. Often students can be seen eating and mingling with

the team before heading off to Session 1 of class. There is an encouraging and positive atmosphere each

Friday. Students are encouraged to attend; there are no limitations or requirements.

to Ashwood High School’s Career Website presentation for all the Year 10 students. The aim of the session was to ensure that students understood what careers ‘looked like’ in the 21

st Century. This included

attributes they needed such as being persistent, resilient and having the drive to be able to create their own future and manage it over their lifespan. Students were encouraged to think about how careers have changed over the years which created a lot of discussion around this topic. This led to introducing the High 5 Career Development Messages and how they played an important part in their career development. The 5 Career Development messages included; Change is Constant, Learning is Ongoing, Focus on the Journey, Follow your Heart, Access your Allies. Students also completed their online registration in the ‘Student Secure Area’ of the Ashwood High School careers website (www.ashwoodhighschoolcareers.com) and commenced their first career assessment in determining what their interests where. Over the next couple of weeks during their ‘Take Action’ class students will also be completing assessments on their Skills & Abilities, Values and then finishing with completing their Career Action Plan document These ‘High 5’ Messages together with the Career Action Planning document (CAPs) aims to encourage

students to think about the skills and attitudes that they will need to navigate their career now and in the

future. Students will have an opportunity to further discuss their results with myself during their one-to-one

career counselling session over the next couple of weeks.

Mrs Voula Jakubicki | Careers & Pathways Advisor

Following a very successful conclusion to 2016 and beginning of 2017 that saw many of our students offered courses of their choice, it is time for our current students to consider their future options. Every fortnight there will be a Career’s Newsletter uploaded to Compass for Year 10, 11 and 12 students. Students should be reading through these Newsletters to find out about course options, Open Days and pathways to careers in their areas of interest. In particular at this point it is very important that any Year 12 student considering applying for Medicine at Monash, and a number of other medical courses, register to sit the UMAT. To achieve the desired results on this test students should be undertaking some form of study – whether this is via an organised program or their own study – it is the best preparation for this task. Students of all year levels should also be regularly checking the Ashwood High School dedicated Career ’s Website. There is a host of information contained here that students from all year levels can be using to develop their career goals and plan their future courses. As events that assist students with their career choices become available they will be advertised via Compass therefore all students are encouraged to check the Newsfeed regularly. For Senior students there will also be information provided on the notice boards in the SLC classrooms and in the open shelving in the cupboards. The pamphlets and booklets in these shelves are available for students to take. Students who are seeking assistance or advice regarding possible careers are encouraged to visit myself,

located in the Senior Learning Centre office and Voula Jakubicki, located in T5.

Finance Report

At the end of last year three new Xerox colour photocopiers were installed throughout the school. Staff and students can send work to these photocopiers. Presenting a Compass card at the photocopiers will give access to print jobs that individuals have requested. With the opening of the new Senior Learning Centre a fourth colour photocopier will be installed by Xerox. Thank you to families who paid prior to the end of the year and to families who have paid this year or have set up payment plans. 2017 invoices will be sent out shortly. Camps, Sport and Excursion Fund

CSEF applications can be submitted to the General Office up until 23 June, 2017. Many families have already applied and there is a run being done 1 March 2017 so payments to those families will be received after that date. For secondary school students the amount received will be $225.00. This funding must be spent on Camps, Sport and Excursions. Please see the previous page to apply for this payment. Accident Insurance and Ambulance Cover

Parents/Guardians are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students. Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance or transport as well as any other transport costs. As there is no whole-of-school policy for student accidents or ambulance cover, you are reminded that:

parents or guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance or transport as well as any other transport costs; and

parents or guardians can purchase insurance policies from commercial insurers. Personal Property

Parents or Guardians and Staff are reminded that the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and it has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property. This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises. As the Department does not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property, students and staff should be discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.
