April 2017
COMMODORE’S CORNER.
Greetings members,
Not much to report this month.
The results of our last club competition weekend
can be found further into the newsletter,
Luckily the weather came right for the second
designated weekend….hopefully, this current wet
weather will clear in time for this weekends Club
Competition.
Some research has been done lately regarding
the law relating to the operation of our club tractor
& launch & retrieve of club boats at
Ngawi…Fortunately there are no “fish
hooks”..(excuse the pun..)… in this for the club
….if you have a current Class 1 licence (motorcar)
& are a current key holder for the tractor, then all is
good…..
One of our long term members has had a few
health issues lately, we wish you all the best Warren
Burgess.
A couple of weeks back, I received a photo from
an old cobber, who fishes over the other
Coast…..he & his fishing mate had hit the Jack Pot
with some great sized Snapper!....(& just to rub it
in, he put them in a wheel barrow……”cause there
were SO Many, & they were SO big!!!”)……Well
done Euan Playle, you’re a bloody legend bro!
Be safe out there, check your bungs!
Check your radio, Tight Lines.

Commodore
Six retired Irishmen were playing poker in O'Leary's apartment, when Paddy Murphy loses $500 on a single hand, clutches his chest, and drops dead at the table. Showing respect for their fallen brother, the other five continue to play while standing up. Michael O'Conner looks around and asks, "Okay, me boys, someone got to tell Paddy's wife. Who will it be?" They draw straws. Paul Gallagher picks the short one. They tell him to be discreet, be gentle, don't make a bad situation any worse. "Discreet!!! I'm the most discreet Irishmen you'll ever meet. Discretion is me middle name. Leave it to me." Gallagher goes over to Murphy's house and knocks on the door. Mrs Murphy answers, and asks what he wants. Gallagher declares, "Your husband just lost $500, and is afraid to come home." "Tell him to drop dead!", says Murphy's wife. "I'll go tell him." says Gallagher.

I had a rose named after me and I was very
flattered. But I was not pleased to read the
description in the catalogue: - 'No good in a
bed, but fine against a wall.'
By all means, marry. If you get a good wife,
you'll become happy; if you get a bad one,
you'll become a philosopher.

PUKEMANU-RIVERSDALE
FISHING CHALLENGE
As advertised in previous newsletters, we
have our challenge against the Riversdale
Fishing club on April 22nd. It will be held
at Riversdale with prizegiving and
refreshments taking place at the Golf
Club that evening. There is
accommodation available at Riversdale
for our members who attend. For those
wishing to participate it is important that
you contact Tony Kerr 0274987991 to let
him know, and he can let Riversdale
know how many to cater for.
PHOTO COMPETITION.
Remember there is a photo competition taking place throughout the fishing calendar year for our club. Photos need to be fishing related of course. Send in your photos to Don at [email protected] and you could be in for a prize at the AGM.
Is this Matt Watson? No its Ali Wedderburn.

COMING UP IN MAY.
TAKE A KID FISHING.
The club will host its annual Take a Kid fishing day on Thursday 18th May. It is the same format as other years, with Wellington Charters out of Mana. Tony Kerr may require help on the day, if you are interested in helping perhaps you could contact him for more details.
Tony has also booked a bach at Glenburn Station
for 5th-6th May for any members who wish to have a
change of scenery. Numbers will be limited to about
10 people for this weekend, so be in quick if you
want to be involved. Cost approx. $ 42.00 per head
each night. I will be a good weekend weather wise
as that is the opening weekend of duck shooting,
and it is always hot and sunny!!!!

Spooling Reels
Keeping a firm, even pressure on a line spool when loading line – braid or mono – onto a game reel has a great affect on getting a line load properly packed on the reel.
The consequences of not getting this right can be dire – under the pressure of a fish the line can bite deeply into a loose load, jam and break. There can also be a considerable reduction in the amount of line that can be fitted onto a reel if a reasonable tension is not maintained while loading.
Of course there are fancy commercially-made spring-tensioned spool holders, but most of us end up doing it the old-fashioned way: someone winds the reel while someone else holds the spool on a shaft, often a big screwdriver or the like, and tries to apply pressure to the spool by hand. This friction creates a lot of heat, and a glove or rag is a necessity to protect the hands. Not ideal.
This is a system that makes the job of re-spooling lines easy. Purchase a couple of cheap tennis balls (the kind you buy your dog to chew up are fine) and using a bait knife, made two incisions opposite each other on either side of each ball. This will allow the balls to be pushed onto the large screwdriver, one on each side of the line spool. Modest hand pressure provided sufficient friction to get a well-seated line load, even with tackle up to 60 kg
If any member is wishing to order one of these picnic tables see Mike Turley at Crighton ITM, they will be literately sailing out the door. Chilly bin and refreshments not included.
