It is also important that the actions are consistent with one’s words. Therefore, one should conduct oneself with a high awareness of one’s actions, noting if they are appropriate. The Messenger

Years ago, I came across a saying that I believed at the time to be sound advice to evaluate one’s actions. I didn’t realize the source of the wisdom at that time but the words sounded true. The saying was, “Since actions speak louder than words, notice, what message you are sending?” The thought obviously is that one can speak words easily, but it is the actions that reflect more accurately one’s true attitude. It is also important that the actions are consistent with one’s words. Therefore, one should conduct oneself with a high awareness of one’s actions, noting if they are appropriate.

The following passages state with clarity our responsibility to guard our actions.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that

hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1)

For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another. For each one shall bear his own load. (Gal 6:3-5)

Probably all of us have at times observed the actions of someone and said to ourselves, “I can’t believe they are behaving like that.” Yet while in honesty we may acknowledge having done so, we also, if honest to ourselves, can sometimes find ourselves in behaviors that are also inappropriate or not glorifying to our Lord Jesus Christ. When this occurs, we damage our witness for Jesus. Why do we do that? Because of the sin nature within us. We allow our spirit to suppress the Holy Spirit within us.

We have the opportunity each day to help draw others closer in their relationship, or to nudge them further away in their relationship with Jesus. Jesus has commanded us to “make disciples…” We should therefore keep our actions in harmony with the example that Jesus has provided us by demonstrating obedience to God and love to others.
